Iraq seeks to buy 36 F-16 fighters from U.S

(Reuters) - The Iraqi government is seeking to buy 36 advanced F-16 fighters from the U.S., American military officials familiar with the request told the Wall Street Journal.


This move could help Iraq reduce its reliance on U.S. air power and potentially allow more American forces to withdraw from the country than had been proposed.

The F-16, made by Lockheed Martin Corp, is the most sophisticated weapons system Iraq has attempted to purchase so far.

Late in July, the U.S. Department of Defense had approved up to $10.7 billion in arms sales for Iraq, including a $2.16 billion sale of M1A1 Abrams tanks built by General Dynamics Corp.

The U.S. recently announced F-16 sales to Morocco and Romania. Those sales, each for roughly $100 million per plane with training, related equipment and support included, offer an indication of how lucrative the Iraq deal could be for Lockheed Martin and its suppliers.

Iraq now appears determined to significantly expand the air power of its military, which has become more competent and confident in recent months but depends heavily on the U.S. for air support.

Iraq quickly has become one of the biggest weapons buyers in the world as it seeks to strengthen and professionalise its fighting force.

No one was available at the U.S. Department of Defense for comment.

Iraqi Ministry of Oil EC145 now operated by IAAC

During the annual Army Anniversary parade over Baghdad that took place on 6 January 2024, two surprising participants were seen: EC145 helicopters of the Ministry of Oil that now sported Iraqi Army Aviation Command (IAAC) serials.

Since the delivery of the final two helicopters in June 2017, they did not carry any serials or registrations. Scramble Magazine assesses that the trigger to incorporate them in the IAAC inventory might have been the crash of an Iraqi Ministry of Oil EC145 in the Nukhaib desert in Anbar Governorate (western Iraq) on 25 August 2022.

Back in June 2014, the Ministry of Oil ordered four EC145 twin-engine light utility helicopters that are used for oil field surveillance, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Passenger Transport.

Although the Oil Exploration Company is a non-military Iraqi Government body comprising of an Air Transport Department and subsequent Aviation Division, the aircraft are maintained and operated by the Iraqi Army Aviation Command (IAAC). They seem to be stationed at Taji, the 1st Army Aviation Base but they also operate from Baghdad and in the province of Basrah.

YI-790 and YI-793 were seen at this year's parade. The tie-ups between the manufacturer’s serial number and the YI-registration are not confirmed yet. If you can confirm those, please let us now at social@scramble.nl

Second batch of Mushshaks arrive in Iraq

On 18 January, the al-Quwwat al-Jawwiya al-Iraqiya (Iraqi Air Force) received it second batch of MFI-395 Super Mushshak basic trainer aircraft from Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), the manufacturer of the aircraft. A delegation from the Directorate of Aeronautical Engineering visited Martyr Brig. Gen. Ali Falih Al-Jawiya AB (aka Balad) for the occasion.

It is to be expected that the batch consisted of four aircraft that will receive the serials YI-204 through YI-207. The first batch of four aircraft arrived on 17 April 2023 so extrapolating that would give an estimated delivery time for the third and last batch of four aircraft at around mid-October.

The Mushshaks are operated by 205th Training Squadron from the freshly refurbished As Suwayrah Air Base, south of Baghdad.

In September 2021 the contract was signed between Pakistan and Iraq to supply twelve MFI-395 Super Mushshak basic training aircraft. Two Mushshaks flew in formation during the military parade over Baghdad that took place on 6 January 2024.
