Pakistan to buy German subs, ignore French



KARACHI: In a departure from the past practice of acquiring submarines from France, Pakistan will buy three German Type 214 submarines.

Walter Freitag, the chief executive officer of the HDW, the largest conventional submarine maker in the world, told The News on Tuesday in an exclusive interview at the IDEAS 2008 here that his company had finalised technical specifications with the navy to build three Type 214 submarines in Pakistan.

The commercial contract has been finalised up to 95 per cent, he said, hoping the final contract in this regard will be signed soon. This is the first time that a clear picture of the billion-dollar deal that the Pakistan Navy is expected to sign in coming months has emerged. Earlier, during mid-90s, the navy had selected three French Agosta 90-B submarines, which were in addition to the two acquired earlier. The deal had generated a lot of controversy at that time.

This time French firm Armaris had offered to supply Pakistan three updated single-hulled, diesel-electric submarines all-French version of the Franco-Spanish Scorpene boat equipped with air-independent propulsion, a deal totalling about $1.2 billion.

However, Walter Freitag said he did not see that kind of controversy enveloping this project perceived during the 90s. The Pakistan Navy understands submarines and ours are the best, he said, rejecting claims of competitors that the Greek Navy had rejected Type 214.

In the Hellenic Navys case, a neutral surveyor was appointed, who decided that the submarine was technically OK and ready for commissioning, he said. The HDW CEO said the Type 214 was technologically more advanced than those of competitors. We use higher grade steel material, which allows greater diving depth, he said. Also, we have fuel cell AIPs and can integrate Harpoons with the Type 214.

The first submarine would be delivered to the Pakistan Navy in 64 months after signing of the contract while the rest would be completed successively in 12 months. Walter Freitag stated that they would be using facilities at the Karachi Shipyard for building Type 214 and minimal upgrade would be required. He added that the Type 214 was 100 per cent German and there was no chance of embargo on it in any case.

Meanwhile, authoritative sources told The News that the decision to acquire Type 214 over the French submarine was made not only because the submarine was more advanced than the French Marlin, but also because many countries had deployed the Type 214 submarines, so there would be no issue of spares.

They said Turkey would be acquiring six Type 214s, South Korea had ordered six more in addition to three ordered earlier, Portugal had bought two, besides several bought by the German Navy. As such, supportability for the Type 214 for the next 30-35 years would not be a major concern.

Pakistan Navy Test-Fires Nuclear Capable Missile

The Pakistan Navy has successfully test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile, the Ghauri Hatf 5, at the end of a field-training military drill.
The Ghauri Hatf 5 missile is powered by a single-stage liquid fuel rocket motor and can deliver conventional and nuclear warheads over a distance of 1,300km, as well as carrying a payload of 700kg.
A statement issued by the Pakistan Navy did not disclose much about the range or other technical details of the weapons fired.
"Pakistan Navy fleet today tested its fire power in the north Arabian Sea to assess lethality, precision and efficacy of its weapon system," the statement said.
The tests also included anti-surface missiles from an F-22P frigate, air-to-surface missiles from P-3C aircraft and submarine surface-to-surface missiles from Agosta 90B submarines.
Pakistan tested the short-range Hatf III and medium-range Hatf IV ballistic missiles in May 2010.

Pakistani Navy Inducts New Training Ship


The Pakistani Navy has inducted a new training ship, PNS Rahnaward, into its fleet to provide quality training to its cadets and sailors.
The 59.35m-long Rahnaward was acquired from the UK, according to the Daily Times.
The ship's features include a complete suite of modern sensors and gadgets, navigation radars, a satellite communication system, fire control and a built-in electronic charting system.
Chief of naval staff Admiral Noman Bashir said the navy's responsibility was to safeguard sea defence and maritime interests at all costs.
"We must understand that only with quality training and consistent hard work can we achieve the much-needed edge over our adversary," he added.

Pakistan to build radar for JF-17 'Thunder' fighter


Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman said the indigenously produced radar, built with China's assistance at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), in Kamra, north of Islamabad, would equip the JF-17 'Thunder' fighter aircraft jointly produced by the two countries
"This is a major step forward. This will be the first such [radar manufacturing] facility in Pakistan," ACM Suleman said in an interview on 21 December at PAF headquarters in Islamabad. He confirmed that the radar would be fitted on the JF-17, which, along with US-supplied F-16 Fighting Falcons, is set to be the PAF's front-line combat aircraft.
Previous reports suggest that the radar to be manufactured will be the Chinese-built CETC/NRIET KLJ-7 radar set. At the 2010 Farnborough Air Show, at which two JF-17s made their debut in the West, Jane's reported that the KLJ-7 had received full marks from the JF-17's designers at PAC.
A PAC programme officer told Jane's : "I have flown with this radar and with other models that we have looked at fitting to this aircraft, such as the Thales RC400, and the Chinese radar is every bit as capable as its contemporary analogs."

La frégate Alamgir ( ex FFG-8 McInerney ), qui a compte 30 ans de service, vient de subir un grand carénage aux chantiers BAE Systems Southeast Division à Jacksonville en Floride. L'Alamgir a été remise en service dans la marine pakistanaise le 31/08/2010. Elle devrait commencer ses essais à la mer vers le 20 janvier et repartir pour le Pakistan le 11 février.

Pakistan is still negotiating a deal with the United States to acquire its own fleet of surveillance drones, and hopes to get six systems of the aircraft, diplomatic sources told Dawn.

La départ de l'Alamgir ( ex-USS McInerny ) pour le Pakistan ne va pas pouvoir se faire la semaine prochaine comme c'était prévu ... Alors que la frégate était au bassin aux BAE drydocks de Jacksonville, et au cours d'un essai de machine, elle a embardé et a embouti le quai devant elle, causant de graves dégâts au quai et à sa propre étrave. Cela s'est passé le vendredi 21 janvier au matin. Il n'y a pas eu de fuites ... "juste" de la tôle froissée

Bizzar, j'aurais pensé qu'il aurait mis les CFT pour le transite à la base c'est fait pour sa....

ben non Viper la plupart(si pas tous) des ferry F16 se passent avec tanker jusqu´a Lajes,meme avec des CFT tu ne le fera pas sans refueling(inclus tjs dans les FMS)

pilote de LM qui s'occupe de transfert ( peut être bi-équipage ) ?

non les leurs,on ne sait ce qui se passe en route..

Pakistan: tir d'essai réussi pour un missile à capacité nucléaire

Le Pakistan a procédé jeudi avec succès au test d'un missile de croisière à capacité nucléaire Hatf VII Babur, rapporte la chaîne de télévision Aaj-TV, se référant au service de presse de l'armée.

Le Hatf VII a été conçu par des spécialistes pakistanais en utilisant des technologies furtives. Sa portée est de 600 kilomètres. Les tests ont débuté en 2005.

Le président pakistanais Azif Ali Zardari a déjà félicité les concepteurs du missile pour le succès de ce tir d'essai.

Pourquoi la livraison ne se fait pas par voie maritime (bateau) ça évite le tanker refueling.
