Alenia Aermacchi rolls out Italy's first T-346 trainers

Flight International
Citation :
The Italian air force's first two T-346A advanced jet trainers were rolled out at Alenia Aermacchi's Venegono plant in December, ahead of their planned delivery to the service's Test Wing at Pratica di Mare air base by mid-April.

Once handed over, the M-346 variants will enter "an intensive operational test and evaluation period", says Brig Gen Enzo Vecciarelli, the air force's combat forces commander. "In the meantime we have put together, with Aermacchi's industrial team, a joint office to better respond to our requirements and ease the aircraft's service introduction," he says.

Another four T-346s will be delivered during 2011 and assigned to the air force's flight school at Lecce. Instructors will start converting to the type in 2012 and the first trainee pilots should fly it the following year, Vecciarelli says.

Alenia Aermacchi chief executive Massimo Lucchesini says the last two aircraft from the six-strong batch are already in work on the company's M-346 production and final assembly line. Another nine will be produced for the Italian air force, and work is also being undertaken on Singapore's order for 12 of the type.

The assembly line will have a start-up production rate of 24 aircraft a year, with the capability to double that number

Italy orders DIRCM systems for transports, helicopters
Citation :
Elettronica has been awarded a €25.4 million ($33.7 million) contract to supply its ELT/572 directional infrared countermeasures equipment for installation on Italian air force transport aircraft and helicopters.

Under the three-year award, Elettronica will develop, integrate and ground-test a two-turret DIRCM installation for the Alenia Aeronautica C-27J (below), Lockheed Martin C-130J and AgustaWestland AW101.

The deal also includes the delivery of five DIRCM systems, plus activities to integrate Cassidian's in-service MILDS II missile warning system. A later contract will cover flight-testing and certification.

The ELT/572 installation should provide 360° protection against man-portable air-defence systems, even when a missile is launched from above an aircraft.

Based on an industrial co-operation between Elettronica and Elbit Systems' Elop subsidiary, the laser-based DIRCM system underwent live testing qualification in a single-turret configuration in Israel in December.

AMI Inaugurates First Fixed Air Defence Radar Systems

The Italian Air Force (AMI) has inaugurated the first of 12 RAT31 DL fixed air defence radar (FADR) systems with the 112th remote radar Squadron of Mortara (Pavia).
The Selex Sistemi Integrati (SSI), developed RAT31-DL, is a long-range air surveillance radar system which will reportedly become the primary component of Nato's air defence.
SSI will also provide the air force with two RAT31-DL/M (deployable air defence radar-DADR) mobile radar systems.
FADR is the carrying structure of the programme with which AMI has started replacing its aerial surveillance systems.
Replacing the systems will ensure the availability of the frequencies necessary for the introduction of the new worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WI-MAX) technology for high-speed wireless internet access in Italy.
To date, nine countries have acquired the system, seven of which are Nato members.

Italian air force accepts first Tornado IDS with mid-life update

Alenia Aeronautica has delivered the first Panavia Tornado IDS upgraded to "basic full mid-life update" status to the Italian air force.

The 20 December handover at Ghedi air base, near Brescia, northern Italy, involved the first of 15 aircraft being upgraded at Alenia's Caselle, Turin facilities under a €50 million ($66 million) retrofit contract awarded in October 2007. Three of the Tornados are configured as trainers.

The mid-life update package includes all the modifications previously made to members of the Italian Tornado IDS fleet under the "1st Upgrade" package plus a night vision goggle-compliant cockpit with new multifunction colour displays

A new environmental control system has been added to cope with the enlarged avionics suite. It includes microwave landing system capability, a flight data recorder and emergency locator transmitter, plus Link 16 system and Rafael RecceLite reconnaissance pod integration.

The enhanced avionics plus a forthcoming new weapons integration software package are intended to give Italian Tornados intelligence, net-centric and advanced radar-suppression capabilities. The software upgrade will be allied to a weapons package including the Boeing/Oto Melara GBU-032 Joint Direct Attack Munition, Raytheon GBU-24 E/B Enhanced Paveway III and MBDA Storm Shadow stand-off system.

Eurofighter delivers five Typhoon aircraft to the Italian Air Force

Hallbergmoos | With most companies on Christmas break between Christmas and New Year, it was a welcome surprise to learn that Alenia Aeronautica was busy completing their final aircraft deliveries for the year, exceeding the total planned for 2010. These last deliveries came in the form of five Eurofighter Typhoon jets that were handed over to the Italian customer on one day.

On the 28th December 2010, Eurofighter Partner Company Alenia Aeronautica signed over IS037, IS039, IS040, IS041, IT011 to the Italian Air Force, bringing the total number of deliveries for the programme in 2010 to 51 – far higher than had been predicted.

This success is yet another impressive indication of the hard work and commitment of the partner companies to meeting and exceeding customer requirements. Throughout the year, the highly skilled Typhoon staff work tirelessly to ensure that each aircraft is safely delivered on time and on schedule. A nice way to end the year.

Italian Air Force Receives 1st Tanker From Boeing

ROME - The Italian Air Force took delivery on Jan. 27 of the first of four Boeing KC767-A tanker aircraft it has acquired.

The aircraft, MM 62229, flew from Boeing's Wichita, Kan., facility to the Italian Air Force's Pratica di Mare base south of Rome for a hand-over ceremony, the Air Force said in a statement.
The aircraft will now "undergo a series of tests and activities" before entering service, the statement said.
"The second aircraft, which should be delivered in the coming months, is now undergoing tests at Boeing," added the statement.
Boeing has previously said that the last two of the four aircraft would feature "enhanced capabilities," without giving details.
The KC767-A replaces the B-707T/T tanker previously flown by the Italian Air Force. It is configured for troop and cargo transport, as well as refueling from a rear boom and three hose and drogues - one under each wing and one under the main fuselage.
Three crew are required for transport flights and four for refueling missions.
After first promising delivery of the tanker in 2005, Boeing's schedule slipped as it sought to fix a vibration problem with a wing pylon, and then tackle a stability problem on the centerline hose and drogue.

ESL Defence to Support Italian Air Force IBOSEC Programme

Elettronica (ELT) has selected ESL Defence to participate in the Italian air force's Infrared Bench for Seeker Characterisation (IBOSEC) programme.
The Italian air force has awarded ELT a contract for a characterisation system for passive infrared sensors, also known as seekers.
Under the IBOSEC programme, the system will be installed at the Experimental Flight Centre – Armament Department of the Italian air force.
The system will be used to optimise the performance of both flare and directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) through the validation of flare signatures and jamming codes, enhancing aircraft survivability against infrared-guided threats.
ESL Defence managing director Bob Fox said the IBOSEC system will provide critical capabilities to the Italian air force, helping to save both lives and aircraft.
ESL provides electronic warfare test systems that deliver high-fidelity threat simulation in the infrared and ultraviolet domains.

Italian air force trains in Israel
By Arie Egozi

The Italian air force will continue to use facilities in Israel to train its pilots for desert combat and to defend themselves against surface-launched threats, according to Israeli sources.

With the Italian air force's continued deployment in Afghanistan, it believes Israel offers the best training for the environment it will encounter.

The Israeli air force has gained vast experience in defending its aircraft against surface-to-air threats and is now sharing this with the Italian service.

In December 2010 Italian air force Panavia Tornado fighters were deployed to the Israeli air force Uvda airbase in southern Israel.

The Tornados flew against an "enemy" Israeli Lockheed Martin F-16, but mainly trained in avoidance tactics from surface-launched threats.

Special flares were used to simulate surface-to-air missile launches to train pilots in the use of countermeasures or to perform avoidance manoeuvres.

Last year the Israeli service deployed its fighters to an Italian air force base in Sardinia for training and has previously trained with the Greek service.

VIDEO: Chinook lifts Ferraris to mountain ice track
By Dominic Perry

Ferrari has had to call on the services of the Italian army's helicopter fleet for an event high in the Italian Dolomites prior to the launch of the company's new FF four-wheel drive car.

A Boeing CH-47 Chinook from the 1st Regiment Antares in Viterbo was used to carry two FFs to a specially constructed ice and snow track at the ski resort of Plan de Corones at 2,350m, where it was demonstrated in front of 200 motoring journalists.

In addition, Italian army aviation provided three Agusta/Bell AB205s for the event from the 4th Regiment Altair in Bolzano.

Alenia Aermacchi Announces the First Flight of the Italian Air Force T-346A

The first M-346 aircraft produced for the Italian Air Force (ITAF) had a successful first flight today, yesterday 31 March 2011. The ITAF has designated the plane as the T-346A.

“The first flight of the T-346A, soon to enter service with our country’s Air Force, is an important milestone for the M-346 program, a milestone reached through the dedication of the entire work force of the Venegono plant,” said Dr. Giuseppe Giordo, CEO of Alenia Aeronautica and Head of the Finmeccanica Aeronautics Sector.

Flown by Chief Test Pilot Quirino Bucci, the aircraft took off at 4 p.m. from Venegono, the home airfield of Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica company controlled by Alenia Aeronautica.
The flight lasted 40 minutes and the T-346A reached a maximum altitude of 15,000 ft., covering the planned flight envelope in terms of speed, angle of attack and load factor. The flight also included manoeuvres to assess aeromechanical handling of the aircraft and systems functionality.
After landing, Captain Bucci expressed appreciation for the aircraft. “Once again, the aircraft demonstrated its excellent characteristics in terms of handling, energy and man-machine interface, all crucial points in training future pilots to fly new generation combat aircraft.”

The ITAF T-346A is the first M-346 series production aircraft completed. The Alenia Aermacchi site in Venegono now operates a leading-edge, highly-automated production line capable of delivering up to 48 aircraft per year with competitive cost and high quality in order to meet the highest program requirements.

The remaining aircraft for the Italian Air Force are already being built on this new assembly line, and production of the 12 aircraft ordered by the Singapore Air Force are also underway.

Alenia Aermacchi M-346 marketing activities are very active both in Europe and the rest of the world. Alenia North America is preparing to bid on the U.S. Air Force's T-X Trainer Replacement Program with the T-100, the U.S. variant of the M-346. The T-100 is the most modern, high performance, safe for student pilots and the lowest life cycle cost of any modern trainer aircraft on the market today.
The Air Forces of several nations have expressed great interest in this aircraft, which meets the latest training requirement of the new generation aircraft such as the F-22, F-35 and the Eurofighter.

2 aerial refueling tankers flying training missions with ItAF crews

The first two Boeing [NYSE: BA] KC-767 advanced aerial refueling tankers for the Italian Air Force (ItAF) formally entered into service today during a public ceremony near Rome.
The ItAF accepted delivery of the two KC-767A tankers on Dec. 29 and March 10. Italian crews then flew the aircraft from Boeing's tanker modification facility in Wichita, Kan., to the Italian air base at Pratica di Mare.
"The configuration flexibility of the KC-767 tanker allows for simultaneous refueling and passenger and cargo transport, with the potential to operate in humanitarian response, disaster relief, and emergency aeromedical evacuation of personnel," ItAF officials said. "The KC-767 enables a unique and exceptional air projection capability, not only for Italy, but for all of NATO."
"This is a milestone event for the Italian Air Force as well as the members of Boeing’s International Tanker team," said Scott Wuesthoff, International Tanker program manager for Boeing. "The KC-767 tankers will significantly increase Italy's military capability as the country performs vital missions in support of NATO and regional interests. The deliveries also reaffirm Boeing's standing as the world’s leading provider of aerial refueling tankers."
Boeing is building four KC-767 Tanker Transport aircraft, designed for in-flight aerial refueling and strategic transport, to replace the ItAF B-707T/T fleet. Since their delivery, the first two KC-767 tankers have been engaged in aerial refueling training missions with ItAF crews in which they are successfully delivering fuel to an array of ItAF aircraft. Boeing and the ItAF are working together to enter the third KC-767 aircraft into the acceptance process for anticipated delivery this summer, with a fourth tanker to follow shortly thereafter. Upon receiving its fourth tanker, ItAF will declare Final Operational Capability.
The Italian Air Force KC-767A is a "convertible combi," meaning it can carry all passengers, all cargo, or a combination of passengers and cargo. In any configuration, the KC-767 has an aerial refueling boom with a remote aerial refueling operator station, as well as wing pod and centerline hose and drogue systems, and a refueling receptacle. This configuration allows for the refueling of all existing types of aircraft, both fighters and transports.
"The Italian Air Force KC-767A can be refueled by another tanker thanks to the refueling receptacle located on top of the aircraft near the cockpit, a feature that increases the tanker's already enviable operating capacity and range," ItAF officials said.
Boeing has been designing, building, modifying and supporting tankers for decades. These include four KC-767 tankers delivered to the Japan Air Self Defense Force, hundreds of KC-135 tankers delivered to worldwide customers, and a fleet of large KC-10 tankers delivered to the U.S. Air Force.
A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Defense, Space & Security is one of the world's largest defense, space and security businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solutions, and the world's largest and most versatile manufacturer of military aircraft. SUCCESSFUL LAUNCHES OF TWO MBDA ASTER MISSILES FROM THE CAVOUR CARRIER

MBDA announces two successful launches made on May 18th and 19th to demonstrate the effectiveness of its Aster missiles. Both launches were from the Italian Navy's Cavour carrier in the Poligono Interforze di Salto di Quirra (PISQ) and were made with the assistance of MBDA.

The launches to test the effectiveness of the SAAM/IT system were carried out: one in “autonomous” (self-controlled) mode and the other in “integrated” mode, controlled by the combat system. The autonomous mode launch was intended to test the SAAM/IT system's ability to search, identify and intercept an attacking sea-skimmer missile as a direct threat to the ship herself.

The purpose of the integrated trial was to demonstrate the combat management system's ability to target threats and to designate the SAAM/IT system to neutralise a threat similar to a sea-skimmer missile.
In both trials, the threat was simulated using a MIRACH aerial target, configured as a missile.
Both launches were entirely successful and the Aster missiles completed their tasks as required.

Antoine Bouvier, CEO of MBDA, announced: “These successful launches are further proof of MBDA's technical capacities".

Italian air force chief details Libyan operations

Almost 100 days since the launch of coalition air operations over Libya, the Italian air force's chief of staff has for the first time detailed his service's involvement in the NATO campaign.

"We have been and are deploying almost the complete range of operational assets at our disposal," said Lt Gen Giuseppe Bernardis, who also outlined the service's progress with revolutionising its power projection capabilities.

Italy's involvement in Libya commenced with the use of Lockheed Martin C-130J tactical transports to perform non-combatant evacuation operations. It also committed Panavia Tornado ECR aircraft for the suppression of enemy air defences, plus Lockheed F-16s and later Eurofighters to help enforce a UN-mandated no-fly zone.

"Since the launch of Operation Unified Protector, our Tornado IDS have conducted intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions with the [Rafael] Reccelite pod, while from the end of April our strike force has been involved in air-to-ground operations with almost the complete inventory of weapon systems," Bernardis said.

This has included the use of Raytheon Paveway/Enhanced Paveway II and III laser- and GPS-guided bombs, others fitted with Boeing's Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kit and, for the first time operationally, MBDA's Storm Shadow cruise missile.

"We are satisfied with the platform and weapon systems performances and crews' operational efficiency," Bernardis said.

"Our reduced fleet of new Eurofighter air superiority aircraft and upgraded Tornado and AMX strike aircraft is offering substantial enhancements in terms of capabilities and reliability compared to our previous large but less-sophisticated frontline component," he added. "The Libyan operations testify once again that investing in the capability to deploy a smaller but state-of-the-art fleet of first- and second-line platforms allows us to participate in international operations as a key player, within political indications."

Combat missions have been supported by the air force's Alenia Aeronautica G222VS signals intelligence aircraft, and also by its KC-130Js and one Boeing KC-767A tanker.

Two of Italy's delayed four KC-767As were placed into operational use in mid-May. "One is devoted to transport certification, while the other focuses on in-flight refuelling activities to speed up full operational capability," Bernardis said, with the latter currently limited to using its hose and drogue refuelling equipment only. The remaining pair should arrive late this year with operational software and hardware enhancements.

Italian aircraft have also for the first time made extensive use of the Link 16 datalink network during the campaign.

The air force could potentially allocate more of its assets to the mission should it continue for an extended period. Bernardis said that operators for its new General Atomics MQ-9 Predator B/Reaper unmanned air vehicles "are conducting training at a high pace from Amendola air base, in order to speed up initial operational capability and possibly put the aircraft at NATO disposal for Libyan operations".

Italy's first two of six Reapers were delivered in 2010, with two more to arrive late this year and the remainder to follow by mid-2012. Equipped with an electro-optical/infrared sensor and synthetic aperture payload, the aircraft can locate and designate targets for other aircraft, but will not carry weapons. Work to upgrade six A-model Predators also continues.

Looking beyond its current operational commitments, Bernardis said the air force will continue to enhance its existing fleet while also preparing to introduce new types.

"We want to consolidate the Eurofighter's air superiority capabilities before exploring its secondary air-to-ground role. In parallel, we are upgrading the Tornado IDS/ECR fleet and plan to introduce new equipment, such as the [Rafael] Litening III targeting pod and [Boeing] small diameter bomb." Such measures will fill the gap until Lockheed's F-35 Lightning II enters use, he said.

The air force has identified a requirement for both the conventional take-off and landing F-35A to replace its AMXs and Tornados and the short take-off and vertical landing F-35B to provide an expeditionary capability.

Previous plans had called for the STOVL aircraft to enter use first, but Bernardis said: "With the F-35B development accumulated delays, a switch to an initial F-35A CTOL version entry into service is being considered." A final decision is expected this year. Its first aircraft will be used to support training in the US, with Italy expecting to declare initial operational capability from 2018.

In a nearer-term procurement, the air force is to replace its Agusta-Sikorsky HH-3F combat search-and-rescue and Agusta-Bell AB212 SAR helicopters, respectively with up to 12 AgustaWestland AW101s and 10 AW139s. "The latter will be delivered within two years as gap-fillers until the more capable AW149 will be ready, while the first two AW101s will be handed over in 2014," Bernardis said.

Further orders for the CSAR-roled AW101 will follow within annual procurement budgets, depending on available funds.
