Burma to Purchase Chinese-Pakistani JF-17 Fighter Jets

According to local media, Myanmar will become the first foreign purchaser of the Sino-Pakistan jointly produced fighter.
Myanmar will purchase the Sino-Pakistan jointly produced JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter aircraft, according to local news reports.

According to the Burma Times, Myanmar is looking to purchase a license to domestically produce the J-17 aircraft, which is called the FC-1 Xiaolong in China. If the report is accurate, it would make Myanmar the first foreign purchaser of the jet. Currently, only Pakistan’s Air Force operates the J-17 and, as Ankit has reported, Islamabad is in the process of making a number of upgrades to the fighter jet.

Although the report is unconfirmed, it is extremely plausible. To begin with, Myanmar has previously operated or currently operates a number of Chinese-made aircraft including: 48 NAMC A-5C fighters, 52 Chengdu F-7M Airguard fighters and 4 Y-8 medium lift transports. The Southeast Asian nation’s air force also recently purchased Sky 02A Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from China, and built domestic copies of them.

Most notably, Myanmar is also believed to operate 4-10 Karakorum-8 (JiaoLian-Cool jet assault and trainer planes, which were also jointly produced by China and Pakistan. Some reports indicate that the deal for the K-8s also included a license in-country component.

Myanmar also reportedly considered purchasing the JF-17 a few years back before ultimately deciding to buy Russian-made Mi-29s. However, the Burma Times report said that Rangoon’s aircraft has suffered from serviceability issues in recent years, and thus a locally assembled aircraft like the J-17 would make sense.

Myanmar is likely to use the JF-17 jets in part to help combat the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) insurgency in northern Myanmar. The purchase of the JF-17 will also help Myanmar keep parity with neighboring Bangladesh, which is expected to expand its air force in the coming years through the purchase of Russian or Chinese-made aircraft. Bangladesh has reportedly been offered and rejected the JF-17.

The Burma Times article noted that the JF-17 “can be armed with a variety of bombs and missiles including PL-5EII, PL-9C and PL-12 AAMs, C-802A anti-ship missiles, general purpose bombs, laser guided munitions and countermeasures on its 7 hard points (four underwing, 2 wingtip, 1 under fuselage). The aircraft’s standard set of armaments are supplemented by a 23 mm GSh-23-2 twin barrel cannon or 30 mm version of the same.”

The report failed to indicate whether Myanmar will look to purchase the Block I or Block II of the J-17s, but it did note that the former is priced at $20 million per unit while the latter is going for $25 million.

Regardless, Myanmar’s purchase of the J-17 would be a huge boon for China and Pakistan. Both countries have tried to market the jet for export but have thus far failed to receive any customers. Pakistan pledged in 2013 to begin exporting the jet in 2014. As The Diplomat reported last year, “The Pakistan Air Force has been assigned [a] target of exporting 5 to 7 JF-17 Thunder planes next year and discussions in this regard are under way with Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Qatar and other friendly countries.”

Myanmar has a economy of $65 Billion which is almost three times less then it's neighbor Bangladesh who has a GDP of $187 Billion.but Bangladesh has not made any stealth ship so far.

Despite Bangladesh's friendly attitude towards Myanmar ,Myanmar is showing aggressive attitude towards Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Navy is currently going though a modernization phase which threatens Myanmar.

Locally designed and built by Thilawa Naval Dockyard, UMS Kyansittha was commissioned on 31 March 2014. A second vessel of this class was also launched in March 2014.

The class is rumored to be fitted with a mix of Russian and Chinese weapon systems and sensors. India's Bharat Electronics and the DRDO have also signed contracts to supply radar an sonar systems to the Myanmar Navy, systems that will likely be fitted on board the Kyansittha class.

According to the local press, UMS Kyansittha has a reduced radar cross section, a displacement of about 3,000 tons and a length of 108 meters. As many as 6 vessels of this class could be on order by the navy of Myanmar.

The Polish Ministry of National Defenceand Thales have signed a contract for the delivery of the integrated combat system and related acceptance activities on board the ORP SLAZAK Patrol Vessel. The system will be fully operational in 2016. The vessel is the successor of the GAWRON multipurpose corvette programme.

The C-802 (NATO designation: CSS-N-8 Saccade) is a chinese made anti-ship missile unveiled for the first time in 1989. The missile is subsonic (M 0.9) with a range of about 120 kilometers. It is available in several versions depending on the launch platform: airplanes, ships, submarines and land-based vehicles. The C-802 is reported to have been exported by China to several countries including Algeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Thailand...

The first ship of the class was completed in 2013 and the second one in 2014. The vessels are fitted with 4x C-802 anti-ship missiles from China and a Russian AK630 with a stealth cupola (these weapon mounts could be produced in China too).

Two quad anti-aircraft guns (which appear to be based on the Russian ZU-23 or Chinese Type 85) are fitted at the rear of the main bridge.

Several sensors are fitted on top of the bridge including a Furuno navigation radar, an air surveillance radar, a surface search radar, a fire control radar (for the CIWS gun) and at the top end of a mast what looks like an ESM system. Two boxes of an unknown decoy system seems to be fitted on top of the bridge.

Myanmar to Buy Chinese-Pakistani FJ-17 Fighter Jets

Islamabad, Jul 11 (Prensa Latina) Myanmar will become the first country to buy JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, jointly manufactured by Pakistan and China companies, revealed the TV channel Dunya News.
According to the news network, the authorities of that Asian nation will acquire 16 of these jets, but the total figure could exceed two dozen.

Pakistan, which already has in its air force some of those aircrafts, will also provide services for the maintenance of these devices, the source added.

National media recently announced that Sri Lanka would buy a lot of those planes, but officials from that nation denied the existence of that agreement.

The JF-17 Thunder is a lightweight fighter jet developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corporation of China, and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.

Myanmar commissions helos, transport aircraft

A lineup of new aircraft for Myanmar during a 24 June 2015 commissioning ceremony at Meikthilla Air Force Base. The 6812 serial on
the Mi-35P would suggest that this is the 12th aircraft in a series of helicopters that have been delivered since 2010 or so by Rosvertol.
Source: Myanmar Armed Forces

Several aircraft and helicopters formally entered service with the Myanmar Air Force (Tatmadaw Lay) in a commissioning ceremony at the Flying Training Base in Meikhtilla (Shante) Air Station on 24 June, according to the Myanmar Ministry of Defence.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, noted that the commissioning of Beechcraft 1900D light transport aircraft, Grob G 120TP basic trainer aircraft, Mil Mi-35P 'Hind E' attack helicopters; Airbus Helicopters AS365 Dauphin 2s; and Bell 206 Jetranger III helicopters, has "not only strengthened the air prowess of the air force but also the national defence capability of the Tatmadaw [armed forces]."

According to Gen Hlaing, the Tatmadaw Lay has commissioned 36 new aircraft over the last four years: "29 units of four types of aircraft and 7 units of three types of helicopters." Local assembly is believed to take place at the Tatmadaw Lay's Aircraft Production and Maintenance Base in Meikhtilla.

While the numbers of aircraft were not detailed, it is known that at least half - if not all - of the 20 Grob G-120TP on order have been delivered. At the June ceremony, one Mi-35P, at least three AS365s and three Bell 206s along with a number of G-120TP trainers were on display or took part in flying demonstrations.

The AS365s will be used for search and rescue (SAR), medevac and "sea reconnaissance missions" while the Bell 206 will serve as basic trainers for pilots transitioning to Mi-2, Mi-17, and Mi-35 helicopters, Gen Hlaing said.

Other aircraft inducted on 25 February include six K-8W jet trainers along with a single ATR 42 transport and a pair of Beechcraft 1900Ds - which will also be used for SAR and surveillance missions and serve as trainers for pilots moving onto ATR 42, ATR 72, Y-8 and Airbus transports.

Myanmar Navy ordered six Super Dvora Mk 3 FAC from Israel By Dylan Vosman - Oct 4, 2015

Forces armées birmanes/Myanmar Armed Forces/Tatmadaw - Page 3 My110

Myanmar military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing ccompanied by Vice-President of IAI RAMATA Mr. Nitzan Shaked, they rode and examined FAC Super Dvora MK3, which is the same type of FAC Myanmar Navy has ordered. These Super Dvora Mk 3 FAC will greatly enhance the Myanmar Navy capabilities. The Super Dvora MKIII multi-mission patrol and attack boats are manufactured by the Ramta division of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The first MKIII naval crafts were handed over to the Israel Navy in 2004, following a contract signed with the Israel Ministry of Defense in January 2002. The latest water jet-powered fast patrol craft, the Super Dvora MKIII is a successor to the Dabur, Dvora, Shapirit, and Super Dvora Mark-1 and Mark-2 boats. The new boat was first trialled in the sea in 2008 by the Israeli Navy. The Super Dvora MKIII incorporates an aluminium hull, whose geometry enables stability in the sea at all speeds. The operational capability of the boat is enhanced by incorporating a range of capabilities in a single platform. The modular design accepts a wide range of payloads for conducting patrol or combat missions and ensures the integration of modular systems for future requirements. The high-sustained speeds and improved sea-keeping abilities allow stability in brown and blue water operations. The boat is capable of intercepting targets at speeds nearing 50kt. The vessel measures 27.4m in length and 5.7m in beam, and has a displacement of up to 72t. It can reach speeds exceeding 40kts.

Key Points
•Myanmar's navy has commissioned new vessels including a second stealthy guided-missile frigate
•The frigate is fitted with two quad box launchers for Chinese C-802 anti-ship missiles

The Myanmar Navy commissioned several new vessels including UMS Sin Phyu Shin (F 14), its second guided-missile frigate with low observable radar characteristics, on 24 December 2015 - the service's 68th anniversary.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by the commander-in-chief of the country's defence services, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who also inspected ongoing offshore patrol vessel (OPV) and corvette projects as well as infrastructure projects at the Naval Dockyard in Thanlyin, according to a release from the senior general's office.

The release also sheds new information on Myanmar's little-known frigate programme that commenced in 2005. The ships, Aung Zeya (F 11) and Kyan-Sit-Thar (F 12), were commissioned in 2010 and 2014, respectively, while construction of Sin Phyu Shin commenced in 2010.

Unlike first-of-class Aung Zeya , the second and third ships feature a stealthy superstructure with two masts and a helicopter hangar. The platform has a length of 106 m and a beam of about 13.5 m. Like Aung Zeya , it is likely that Sin Phyu Shin , is powered by two Chinese-assembled Pielstick 16 cylinder PA6 STC engines from Shaanxi Diesel Engine company.

The frigate is equipped with an India-supplied RAWL-02 (license-built Thales LW-08) 2D air search radar on the mainmast, a Chinese Type 362 missile-targeting radar in a radome atop the foremast along with two fire control radars - most likely Chinese Type 47 series. An India-made HMS-X hull-mounted sonar system is also fitted to the frigates.

Weapons include one Oto Melara 76 mm gun in a stealthy gun mount and three Chinese NG-18 systems for close-in defence. A North Korean-origin box launcher for six man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) is also fitted on the foredeck along with two North Korean small calibre gun mounts on the bridge wings.

Irkut reportedly received an order from Myanmar for Yak-130 combat trainer aircraft

Irkut, a subsidiary of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) from Russia, will deliver a batch of Yakovlev Yak-130 (Mitten) combat trainer aircraft, according to the manufacturer’s 2016 acquisition plan (#2150140358), unveiled TASS today, Jan. 15, 2016.

Under the plan, Contract 2150140358 stipulates the delivery of a batch of Yak-130s and associated equipment to Myanmar and a specialized full-mission tactical simulator as well. The agreement was signed on June 22, 2015. The number of combat trainers to be sold and the schedule of the contract have not been released.

At the same time, Irkut continues to promote the Yak-130 on the Southeast Asian market. In particular, its acquisition plan provides for familiarization flights for Malaysian and Vietnamese pilots.

The Yakovlev Yak-130 is a russian made subsonic two-seat new-generation aircraft intended for basic and advanced flight training of air school trainee pilots. Its development started in 1991. The Yak-130 is powered by two up-to-date Al-222-25 turbojet engines with a thrust of 2,500 kgf each.

Owing to eight wing hardpoints, the aircraft can carry a combat load of up to 3,000 kg In addition to 250-kg and 500-kg size aerial bombs, B-8 and B-13 rocket pods, a GSh-23 gun pod, the armament suite includes the R-73 IR-guided air-to-air missiles, the Kh-25 laser-guided air-to-surface missiles and the KAB-500 guided bomb controlled by the Platan- or Sapsan-type pod-mounted optronic system attached to the ninth (underbelly) hardpomt.

Birmanie: un avion militaire s'écrase, quatre morts

AFP 10/02/2016

Myanmar Air Force loses helicopter during training

Anthony Davis, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
27 April 2016

An ageing Myanmar Air Force (MAF) Bell 206B JetRanger helicopter crashed in a reservoir in central Myanmar on 26 April. According to the Myawaddy military news agency, both pilots survived with only minor injuries after being rescued by local fishermen.

The twin-blade utility helicopter reportedly came down for technical reasons while on an early morning training flight from the Meiktila military helicopter training school. Its pilots, both MAF majors, managed to ditch the aircraft in the large Montaing Reservoir, south of Meiktila town.

The helicopter training school is situated separately from the MAF's main fixed-wing air base and aircraft production facility at Shante, just north of the town.

The Ministry of Defence Myanmar wants to buy more Ukrainian BTR-3U wheeled armored personnel carriers, according to military-informant.com.

Myanmar expects to buy undisclosed number BTR-3U armored personnel carriers, which were very effective during the border crisis with China in early 2015.

The BTR-3U armored personnel carrier was jointly developed in 2000 by Ukrainian and UAE companies as a private venture. The BTR-3U is an improved variant of the Soviet BTR-80 armored personnel carrier, however it is a newly built vehicle, rather than upgrade of existing APC.

The BTR-3U is armed with Shkval armament module. It is fitted with a 30-mm dual-fed cannon, 7.62-mm coaxial machine gun, 30-mm automatic grenade launcher and Konkurs anti-tank guided missiles. Weapons on the Shkval module can be replaced, fitting it with different anti-tank missiles and so on.

Armor of the BTR-3U provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. It is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.

Myanmar manufacturing of Ukrainian-made 8×8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier BTR-3U with spare parts supplied by Ukraine.

Since 2003, the country has purchased 10 BTR-3U from Ukraine and now to manufacture locally Ukrainian-made BTR-3U 8×8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier with spare parts supplied by Ukraine.

Myanmar deployment of combat-capable UAVs in counter-insurgency role confirmed

Anthony Davis, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
07 June 2016

Amid continuing clashes with ethnic rebels, Myanmar's military is confirmed as having deployed unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) for counter-insurgency operations in the north of the Southeast Asian country.

First inducted into the inventory of the Myanmar Air Force (Tatmadaw Lay) in 2013 or 2014, one or more Chinese-built CH-3A (Cai Hong 3A or Rainbow 3A) UCAVs have been undertaking sorties from an airfield likely to be either Lashio in Shan State or Bhamo in southeastern Kachin State.

Confirmation of earlier reports on an UCAV deployment to the northern theatre of operations has emerged in the form of a photograph likely to have been taken on a serviceman's mobile telephone and posted on a Facebook account before being disseminated on the internet.

Modernisation des Mi-24 du Myanmar !

Forces armées birmanes/Myanmar Armed Forces/Tatmadaw - Page 3 35104

The delegation inspected the facility’s recently upgraded sites, including modular assembly and paint shops, as well as a stationary helicopter exhibition. The guests were presented Mi-17V-5 and Ansat helicopters in medical, passenger, and VIP versions. In addition, demonstration flights of the aforementioned helicopters were arranged specially for the delegation.

“Today the Asia-Pacific region market is one of the most important for the Holding due to the constant demand for Russian helicopters. We are prepared to offer regional helicopter operators serial products and new-generation helicopters,” Alexander Shcherbinin, Russian Helicopters’ Deputy CEO for Marketing and Business Development, noted.

Nearly 1,500 fixed-wing aircraft made by Kazan Helicopters are operated in the Asia-Pacific region. The enterprise has been delivering Mi-17 type helicopters to Myanmar since 1995. Over the many years of cooperation, Myanmar’s MoD has received almost 20 Mi-17 type helicopters in various versions. Moreover, the aircraft were supported with spare parts and training provided by foreign specialists.

This week the Myanmar MoD delegation is planning to visit Rostvertol to evaluate the enterprise’s production facilities.

Currently, the Russian Helicopters Holding maintains four Mi-24P transport military helicopters that belong to the Myanmar Air Force within the framework of an agreement reached in 2015. The parties may conclude additional contracts subject to successful completion of the maintenance.

Russian Helicopters is part of State Corporation Rostec and a global player in the helicopter industry, as well as the sole Russian rotorcraft designer and manufacturer. The Holding was founded in 2007. It is headquartered in Moscow. The Holding incorporates five helicopter plants, two design bureaus, as well as components production, maintenance and repair enterprises, aircraft repair plants, and a helicopter service company providing after-sales support in Russia and abroad. The Company’s customers include the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian Ministry of Interior, Russian EMERCOM, other state clients, Gazprom Avia and UTair Airlines, as well as other large Russian and foreign companies. In 2015, Russian Helicopters’ IFRS revenue increased by 29.5%, totaling RUB 220 billion, with a 212 helicopters delivered.

18 nations participate in ASEAN Exercise 16-3

Areas of the world riddled with natural disasters and cursed by the secondary effects of mother nature’s wrath demand a responsive force that thinks, trains and plans ahead.

An exercise bringing together those very forces from 18 nations’ military and government organizations kicked off Sept. 5, 2016 at 14th Military Circle, Chonburi Province, Thailand. ASEAN Exercise 16-3 commenced with a fitting demonstration of an earthquake-induced collapsed building Search and Rescue operation.

Helicopters from Japan, Russia, Singapore and Thailand roared toward the airfield, dispatching fast-rope rescue teams and airlifting casualties. Meanwhile, teams on the ground moved casualties from the “hot zone,” a simulated collapsing building, to the “warm zone,” the immediate safety of an open field, and triaged according to casualty condition.

Teams from the Indian Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and Royal Thai Army moved casualties secured on backboards swiftly to the pickup zone or field hospital. It was a grand display of pre-planned, coordinated and rehearsed disaster response, reinforcing the pay-off of the very familiarity and training this exercise will focus on.

“This exercise is intended to foster cooperation and to share experience, information and skills among military medics of the ASEAN member states and plus countries, while fostering capabilities of military units in the region through joint humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations,” said General Prawit Wongsuwon, Kingdom of Thailand Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, during the opening ceremony.

AEx 16-3 is an opportunity for different nations to apply and hone common standard operating procedures and diversify each other’s capabilities for the inevitable calamities of the volatile Indo-Asia-Pacific.

A U.S. contingent of approximately 25 personnel from U.S. Pacific Command; U.S. Army Pacific; U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific and Pacific Air Forces will work alongside the other nations in both the command post and field training exercises conducting medical planning, air medical evacuation, military medicine and chemical/ biological/ radiological/ nuclear defense.

Approximately 2,000 personnel are participating in the exercise from the 10 ASEAN member states Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and “plus” countries Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Russia.

“This is considered an important milestone of defense cooperation,” Wongsuwon lauded the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting Plus program, which, “which helps maintain peace, stability and security in the region.”

Humbling reminders of the significance of combined joint disaster response training come in the form of approximately 100 natural disasters on average each year in the Indo-Asia-Pacific. Sharing and honing real-world, on the ground, tactical and operational response capabilities facilitates effective, efficient response in a merciless environment.
