GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (BNO NEWS) -- Ten people were killed on Tuesday when an Air Force helicopter crashed in northern Guatemala after being sent to help with another helicopter crash in the region, defense officials said. There were no survivors.

The accident happened on early Tuesday afternoon when when the helicopter went down in the village of Quebrada Seca, located in the San Luis municipality in Petén Department, not far from the border with Belize. The aircraft was carrying three crew members and seven passengers.

Guatemalan Defense Minister Ulises Anzueto confirmed all ten people on board were killed. He said the HL190 UH1H aircraft, one of the largest helicopters being used by the Guatemalan Air Force, had been asked to assist with another helicopter crash in the region. The accident happened after the crew was told their assistance was no longer required.

The helicopter, which was said to be in a good condition and has a service record of more than 20 years, had initially left on a weekly flight to supply military posts and transport soldiers. The pilot, Lieutenant José Everardo Portillo Salazar, was experienced with more than 700 flight hours.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but bad weather conditions may have played a role.

The Guatemalan Congress has approved borrowing from banks in Brazil and Argentina for the purchase of six Super Tucano aircraft and a tactical air control centre.

Elperiodico.com.gt reports that the need to monitor areas like Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz and Petén, to weaken the activities of organized criminals and drug traffickers in these regions under project entitled ‘Construction of a System for Monitoring and Protection of the Mayan Biosphere.’

The $170 million will be used for the purchase of six EMB 314 Super Tucano aircraft, a logistics package, spare parts, ground equipment and flight supplies and training services and technical support for the Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica (EMBRAER), and a command center and control radars including three from Argentina. The Ministry of Defence will be in charge of handling that amount.

The loan was approved by a national emergency procedure.

( Infodefensa.com ) San Salvador - The Ministry of Government of Guatemala will sign contracts with Pietro Beretta SPA , Israel Weapon Industries Ltd. ( IWI ) , and Glock America SA , for the purchase of more than 17 000 weapons for more than 6 million dollars to equip the National Civil Police ( PNC ) .

This was confirmed by Guatemalan Interior Minister , Mauricio Bonilla , who said what comes next is an administrative process , because the legal representatives of the companies supplying the weapons come to the country to sign contracts and then submit payment through Guatemala Bank for banking institutions from Austria, Italy and Israel.

According to the newspaper Prensa Libre of Guatemala , to Pietro Beretta SPA it will buy the 14 000 142 handguns for regular force PNC , in the amount of approximately $ 5.7 million .

Key Points
A series of border incidents involving the Belize Defence Force and Guatemalan civilians has led to the deployment of about 3,000 Guatemalan soldiers to the border, reviving a long-standing unresolved territorial dispute.
Both countries have agreed to de-escalate the conflict through diplomatic talks but border incidents, including skirmishes between the two countries' forces, are likely as long as there is a military presence on the border. Bilateral trade between both countries is low, reducing the risk of a negative commercial effect in both countries.
Although a resolution of the territorial dispute is unlikely, inter-state war risks are low and contained by the upcoming diplomatic talks. Such risks would only gradually increase if the negotiations stall, if further military skirmishes take place, or if military bases are built near the border, particularly by the more capable Guatemalan forces.
EVENT
Guatemala and Belize have agreed to seek to de-escalate a border dispute through the staging of diplomatic talks in Istanbul, Turkey on 21 May.

The Belize Foreign Ministry announced on 19 May that it had requested that the Organization of American States (OAS) investigate allegations that Guatemalan uniformed personnel had kidnapped a Belizean farmer and detained him in Guatemala the previous week. The request was made in the context of the OAS having already started an investigation into live-fire incidents involving the Belize Defence Force (BDF), which resulted in the death of a Guatemalan child on 20 April, and the wounding of a man on 13 May in Chiquibul National Park along the shared border. The child's death, along with the injury of his father and younger brother, triggered a rapid build-up of 3,000 Guatemalan soldiers on the border, including along the Sarstoon River near Belize's Forward Operating Base (FOB) on the Caribbean coast.

In both incidents, Belizean authorities denied Guatemalan allegations of undue force, arguing that the BDF had acted in self-defence.
