The Turkish Armed Forces have begun working on a project to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), broadcaster NTV reported on its website today.

A decision to launch the project was made in a July 17 meeting of the Defense Industry Executive Board, headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel. Erdoğan had previously requested that the military develop missiles with a 2,500-kilometer range.

The board decided to form a satellite launch center that would have a two-fold effect on Turkey's aerospace and military endeavors. First, the center will enable Turkey to place its own satellites in orbit, and second, the center will allow the Turkish military to launch missiles that can navigate outside of the Earth's atmosphere. Attaining an ICBM launch capability is reportedly the chief aim of the satellite launch center.

The Turkish Defense Ministry, the Defense Industry Undersecretariat and the Scientific and Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), have been jointly working on the project for some time.

The report said Ankara could cooperate with an undisclosed Eastern European country to develop the satellite launch center.

The ICBM project, meanwhile, has sought to improve on the SOM cruise missile developed by TÜBİTAK. The SOM cruise missile has a current range of 300 kilometers. The range would first be increased to 1,500 and later to 2,500 kilometers within the project, according to the report.

The report did not elaborate on whether the SOM's planned 2,500-kilometer range would be increased even further or whether its increased range would be utilized to develop an ICBM separately, as missiles with ranges under 5,500 kilometers are not considered "intercontinental."

The countries known to currently have ICBMs in their military arsenal are Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and India.

Des ICBM sans ogives nuke, ça n'a pas beaucoup de sens, à moins d'etre obligé d'en envoyer des centaines pour espérer causer des pertes substantielles.enfin, à mon avis.

la Turquie veut avoir entre les mains des missiles ballistique et missiles de croisières capables de porter une ogive + maitriser l'atome. tout cela en attendant une décision politique qui peut intervenir à tout moment pour la production et l'assemblage d'ogives Nuc. je pense que cela intervient pour augmenter les pressions sur l'Iran et en même temps pour pointer le programme nucléaire Israelien des doigts. la Turquie et l'Arabie plaident pour une dénucléarisation du moyen-orient y compris démantèlement de celui Israelien

C'est peut être une manoeuvre pour mettre la pression sur Israel....qui elle même utilise cet argument contre l'Iran
plutôt malin de la part des Turques car Israel avec sa politique d'ambiguité sur l'armement sera sur la défensive et devra se justifier à son tour ...et nier comme le fond les Iraniens ne sufira pas...des contrôles de l'AIEA seront exigé.

Du moment qu'on sait faire un ICBM, on peut toujours modifier/upgrader le missile pour qu'il puisse emporter une charge nucléaire non ?

Je vois pas pourquoi ce serait inutile, c'est complémentaire.

Sinon, je suis pour une dissuasion nucléaire nationale avec assistance Pak .

Toute les menaces pour la Turquie se trouvent dans un environement proche ...donc l'intérêt de ce type d'armement se pose ?
le missile de croisière, lui c'est totalement différent l'aspect stratégique de cette arme dans un conflit est évident !

avoir un missile pouvant frappé à 5000 km serait de quel utilité pour la Turquie ?
prendre pour cible un pays en Europe => totalement exclu
un pays du moyen-orient =>mis à part l'Iran une menace contenue par Israel et les Etats-Unis, la politique de la Turquie vise à un rapprochement dans la région
Reste la russie => et nous savons qu'une dissuasion face à ce pays ne sert pas à grand chose étant donné que vous êtes membre de l'OTAN

En résumé Inanc, l'utilité de disposer d'une dissuasion nucléaire pour la Turquie se pose clairement, à mon sens il serait plus judicieux pour elle de posséder une autonomie en matière d'armement conventionnel

Personne à vrai dire. Sa tout le monde est un peu prés d'accord.

Je me rappel de cette article de presse de l'année 1984 que mon père avait gardé précieusement, sur les propos d'un général israélien, qui affirmé que l'Otan n'aidera pas la Turquie et risquera pas une guerre nucléaire pour la Turquie.

Donc, face à Israël et l'Iran nucléaire, l'Otan nous ai d'aucune utilité. Je pense sincèrement que la Turquie pourra être tenter par l'armement nucléaire si l'Iran l'acquiert, pareil pour l'Arabie Saoudite.

Les systèmes d'unités ELTA d' Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) a décidé de reprendre la fabrication de systèmes pour les avions mesures électroniques Boeing 737 aéroportée de détection lointaine et de contrôle ( AEW & C ) de l'armée de l'air turque, que des sources ont indiqué les Nouvelles Hurriyet Daily en Turquie.


Le journal a ajouté que la décision ouvre la voie au lancement de la très retardée de quatre Boeing 737, qui ont été construits dans une transaction évaluée au total 1,6 milliard de dollars. Le quotidien turc a également émis l'hypothèse que la décision de fournir les dispositifs critiques peut aussi signifier la fin de deux années d'exportations interdictions de défense israéliennes à la Turquie. Les sources ont indiqué, avec la récente décision de continuer la production, la production d'un troisième plan est presque terminé. Le ELTA avait fini années la production de systèmes EMS pour les deux premiers plans.

Les Nouvelles Hurriyet Daily a rapporté qu'en 2002, l'agence d'approvisionnement de défense de la Turquie a commandé quatre avions de 737 à 700 AEW & C de Boeing, radar plus de terrain et des systèmes de contrôle et de l'équipement de contrôle au sol pour la formation des équipages mission, pour mission de soutien et de maintenance. Selon l'accord, les quatre avions seront livrés en 2006. Mais l'intégration des avions beaucoup plus de temps. Le ELTA Systems est la construction du SME pour les quatre avions turque et de ses systèmes devrait coûter plus de $ 100 millions.

Cette décision intervient après les efforts de Boeing pour faire avancer le ELTA pour reprendre la fabrication de systèmes de Turcs. Le ELTA est le seul fabricant de systèmes EMS pour le Boeing 737. Le Boeing 737 AEW & C est utilisé dans le cadre des capacités de la Turquie dans l'OTAN.

Ils sont sous-traitant de Boeing donc on peut pas faire grand chose si on veut que le programme qui a déjà du retard aboutisse.

Ici, c'est plus Israel qui veut pas remplir ses obligations contractuelles.

Mon intime conviction c'est qu'on va utiliser les ECM Israéliens sur nos AWACS pour finir le projet et ensuite ils seront remplacés par ceux d'Aselsan.

Chief of Turkish General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel departed today for a formal visit to Saudi Arabia, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) announced on its website.

Although no further statement was provided on the TSK’s site, news reports said the three-day visit was the first visit to Saudi Arabia by a Turkish chief of General Staff in the last two decades.

According to the same reports, Özel will hold talks during the visit with Hussein al-Kabil, the Saudi military chief of staff, and Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, the country’s deputy prime minister and defense minister, who was named as crown prince in June.

Additionally, Özel will visit some military facilities, the reports said, noting that a second high-level delegation will travel to Riyadh at the same time as Özel for the first meeting of a joint military committee between the two countries.

ANKARA, Turkey, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Turkey will begin producing indigenous Anka unmanned aerial vehicles next year.

Turkish Defense Industry Ministry spokesman Murad Bayar announced the incipient production, stating that the Turkish army will begin receiving the Anka UAVs in late 2013.

The Anka UAVs are produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc., a Turkish state-owned aviation and aerospace industry company.

Besides the Anka UAVs, TAI also produces F-16 Fighting Falcon jets under license, CN-235 light transport/maritime patrol/surveillance aircraft, SF-260 trainers, Cougar AS-532 search and rescue, combat search and rescue and utility helicopters, Anadolu Ajansi news agency reported.

Since 2004 Turkey has been developing a reconnaissance UAV, with about 180 TAI engineers involved in the project.

Another Turkish UAV project is the Simsek -- "Lightning."

Earlier this month, the Turkish military decided to return three tactical Aerostar UAVs, built by the Israeli company Aeronautics Defense Systems, to Israel alleging substandard performance in the military's campaign against Kurdistan Workers Party insurgents.

The first prototypes of Turkey's first national main battle tank ALTAY which is designed and developed by OTOKAR has been introduced. Realized with an investment of about 500 million USD, the ALTAY Project is planned for mass production in 2015.

The first prototypes of Turkey's first main battle tank ALTAY which is designed and developed by OTOKAR, the biggest privately owned company of the Turkish Defence Industry, has been presented at OTOKAR facilities in Sakarya on November 15th.

Held with the participation of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ERDOGAN, the "ALTAY FIRST PROTOTYPE" ceremony was hosted by Mustafa V. Koc, Chairman of Koc Holding. General Necdet OZEL, Chief of General Staff; Ismet YILMAZ, Minister of Defence; General Hayri KIVRIKOGLU, Commander of the Turkish Land Forces; Murad BAYAR, Defence Industry Undersecretary; Kudret ONEN, Head of Koc Holding Defence Industry Group and Chairman of the Board of OTOKAR; Halil UNVER, Vice Chairman of OTOKAR and Serdar GORGUC, OTOKAR General Manager attended the ceremony.

The first prototypes of ALTAY reflect the results of the concept development and critical design process of the Project which started in 2009. The first prototype is planned to be used for the testing and optimization of ALTAY's mobility.

The second prototype will be used in order to test the firing performance of ALTAY. Two more prototypes are planned to be manufactured following the evaluation of the data gathered from first two prototypes. The ALTAY tank will be ready for mass production by 2015.

The first ALTAY prototype had already covered more than 2.000 kilometers during tests up to now. Two prototypes exhibited a special show to the guests of the ceremony at the tank test track of OTOKAR. Including mobility performance like acceleration, maximum speed, side slope, suspension, stabilization track and off-road drive, this show made the impression that, when finished, ALTAY would be the most modern tank in the world.

Kudret ONEN, Head of Koc Holding Defence Industry Group and Chairman of the Board of OTOKAR shared the pleasure of introducing the first prototype of ALTAY to public. After reminding about the initial stages of the Project, ONEN also informed about the future activities of ALTAY.

"550 engineers are working in order to complete the Project, 260 of which are OTOKAR employees. Together with the ALTAY team, and nearly 100 subcontractors, we aim to make the best of our time and prepare ALTAY for mass production by 2015."

Announcing that the mobility performance of OTOKAR's first two prototypes would be demonstrated during the ceremony, ONEN continued as follows: "Today armoured tactical vehicles of OTOKAR are exported to almost 20 countries. With more than 25.000 vehicles used by the armies in the world, we represent our engineering and production capability.

"Up to now, we accomplished all our projects in time and perfectly, and we tried to fulfil all our commitments successfully. As an example of this, I'd like to announce you that today we'll show you the two prototypes of ALTAY. With the first prototype that you'll see today, we'll test the mobility of ALTAY. This first prototype already covered more than 2.000 kilometers, and first results prove that we're doing right. And with the second prototype we will perform firing tests of ALTAY.

"We also aim to make this prototype ready for the firing tests during the following months. By using the results that we gather from these two prototypes, we'll manufacture the ultimate prototypes, test them, and bring ALTAY to perfection as the most modern and capable tank in the world."

Speaking at the ceremony, Mustafa V. KOC, Chairman of the Board of Koc Holding, expressed his gladness about the current situation of the National Tank Project which has a significant importance for the national defence industry strategy of Turkey.

KOC stated the fact that ALTAY had been a prestige Project not only for our country but also for Koc Group, and continued as follows: "ALTAY will provide great acceleration to land platform area of our country's defence industry in terms of design, development and manufacturing not only with its existing power but also with its investments, developing labour force and technical know-how. With its power to withstand possible threats of today and the future,

"ALTAY will further enhance the strength of our armed forces as the most modern battle tank in the world. With stable management, growing economy and strong army, our country will reinforce its power and leadership within the region, and Turkey will take its place among the special main battle tank manufacturers of the world. Moreover, our country will continuously progress with products developed by its own resources and capabilities, and created with its own technology.

"Until today we realized many achievements in the defence industry area by means of long term approaches, a properly defined vision and leadership. As Koc Group, we have been endeavouring, investing and realizing achievements in the defence industry in order to serve these goals and strategies.

At the end of the ceremony, Mustafa V. KOC, Chairman of the Board of Koc Holding presented an ALTAY tank model to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ERDOGAN as a memory of the day.

Officiellement, elle a déjà commencé, on aura sans doute droit à une petite cérémonie pendant décembre pour la livraison de 4 hélicos

Evidemment, ça va être beaucoup plus intéressant quand on commencera le "vrai" le T-129B au 2e semestre 2013 avec Cirit & UMTAS & HMSD AVCI.

Les 9 T-129A seront modernisés au standart B par la suite.

Sûrement Patriot, on connaitra le choix en décembre sans doute au prochain SSIK (Sommet Executif de l'Industrie de la Défense).

Le fait qu'il a été retardé et même considéré dans la presse comme annulé est selon moi, une stratégie du SSM pour avoir le max de contribution locale et de ToT.

On négocie serré en coulisses pour les intérêts de la Nation.

The Turkish defense industry could earn benefits worth over $2 billion from Raytheon Co.’s contracts worldwide if a U.S. group that includes the firm wins a Turkish tender to help provide defense systems to the country.

The U.S. partnership of Raytheon, a top missile maker, and Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest defense company, has offered their Patriot air and missile defense systems in the tender, which seeks to provide for Turkey’s long-range-missile and air-defense systems, or T-Loramids. The systems fire both Lockheed Martin’s Patriot Advance Capability-3 (PAC-3) and Raytheon’s GEM.T anti-air missiles.

Other competitors include the Italian-French Eurosam, proposing its SAMP/T Aster 30; Russia’s Rosoboronexport, marketing the S300; and China’s CPMIEC (China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corp.), offering its HQ-9.

Mike Boots, the Turkey Patriot program manager at Raytheon, told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review on Thursday that his company had special cooperation agreements with Turkey’s Aselsan, a military electronics powerhouse and the country’s largest defense company, and Roketsan, Turkey’s main missile and rocket maker.

“Through our contracts with the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, the Turkish defense industry [mainly Aselsan and Roketsan] already have agreements worth a few hundred million dollars for the sale of Patriot components to these countries,” Boots said.

“If we win the Turkish contract, another $2 billion may come to the Turkish industry related to our sales to several Middle Eastern countries and other customers elsewhere,” Boots said.

“If we win the Turkish contract, the local partners will already be producing Patriot components for the national program, so they will have a great chance to win part or all of this $2 billion from our expected sales to other countries. The Turkish defense industry will already be experienced in making their parts,” Boots said.

In addition, in line with a requirement by the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, Turkey’s procurement agency, all foreign companies seeking Turkish deals need to guarantee in advance that at least half of the work should be done by Turkish companies locally.

“This way, work worth more than another $2 billion will stay in Turkey, to be undertaken by Turkish companies,” said Boots, implying that the price of the U.S. systems could be around $4 billion. The price depends mostly on the configuration of the systems and the supplier’s quality and policies.

Turkey’s T-Loramids program is not a commercial tender, but Ankara is instead holding rival government-to-government talks with the United States, Italy, France, Russia and China. Turkey’s national air defense systems are designed against both ballistic missiles and enemy aircraft.

Pour les 2 milliards, c'est du possible ou baratin de vendeurs ? La Turquie peut l'imposer dans le contrat ou c'est contre la procedure d'appel d'offres ?

Je lis ici et là que le coût des F-35 pour nous sera de 16 milliards de $, le SSM Murad Bayar dit que ce projet va donner du travail à nos entreprises pour une valeur de 8 milliards de $ soit 50 %.

Ici, ça équivaut également à 50% donc c'est largement possible.

Le temps d'acheter sur étagère est fini pour nous, on a des entreprises solides dans ce secteur qui peuvent contribuer à ces projets.

Quand ça traine, c'est souvent bon signe pour nous, ça veut dire qu'on protège nos intérêts
