Israel lifts grounding on F-16 and F-15 fleets
Israel has resumed operations with its Lockheed Martin F-16I and F-15I combat aircraft, which have been grounded since an accident involving the F-16I on 7 July.
The F-16I Sufa was on a training flight when it crashed in the Mediterranean Sea, some 27nm (50km) off the coast of the Gaza Strip. Its two crew ejected safely and were subsequently rescued.
Early indications pointed to an engine failure as the likely cause of the mishap.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash Israeli air force chief Maj Gen Amir Eshel temporarily grounded all Sufa and F15I Raam training flights until an initial inquiry into the incident was completed. The jets share the same Pratt & Whitney F100 engines.
Although the investigation has not yet been formally concluded, the air force has decided to resume flights as the accident probe does not indicate a fault with the powerplants.

Israeli Apache upgrade adds avionics pod
An under-belly compartment for electronic systems is part of an upgrade programme for the Israeli air force's Boeing AH-64A Apache attack helicopters.
Lt Col C, head of the repairables department in the air force's Unit 22 says that the AH-64A - referred to by the service as "Peten" - are undergoing a comprehensive upgrade. This includes replacing original wiring and some main computers, plus the addition of the new compartment beneath the fuselage that houses modern avionics equipment. The external compartment was the only solution, as all of the Apache's internal space is already packed with systems.
Installed behind the Apache's cannon (below), the compartment was designed and manufactured by Unit 22, which is the main maintenance and upgrade centre for the Israeli air force.
Some of Israel's A-model Apaches have previously been upgraded to the AH-64D "Saraf" standard, but a planned programme to bring all examples to the configuration was terminated due to budgetary constraints.
Flightglobal's Ascend Online Fleets databaserecords the Israeli air force as having an active fleet of 48 Apaches, including 26 A-models.

IAF drone plunges into the sea
State-of-the-art Hermes 450 UAV drops out of the sky opposite Palmachim beach; engine failure deemed likely cause of crash
An Israeli Air Force drone crashed into the sea after suffering a major malfunction during a flight Tuesday afternoon off the coast of Palmachim.
IAF search and rescue forces scrambled to the area of the crash to retrieve the remains of the Hermes 450 aircraft. The cause of the accident is unknown but early assessments point to engine failure.
In July troops preemptively crashed a Hermes drones after discovering a malfunction in its systems. On that occasion the unmanned aircraft was flying near the Egyptian border when its operators noticed the problem. They decided to crash it inside Israeli territory to avoid the risk of the advanced aircraft falling into Egyptian hands.
The Hermes 450, made by Elbit Systems, is a medium-sized drone designed for reconnaissance and surveillance missions that can fly for over 20 hours straight. Each drone costs about $2 million.
In May Israel’s military grounded a fleet of high-altitude Heron-1 UAV surveillance drones after one was downed over the Mediterranean Sea. The military intentionally crashed the unmanned aircraft because of a malfunction in its engine. The failure was discovered during a routine flight off the coast of Netanya.
The Israeli-made Heron-1 is one of the most advanced UAVs in the world. It can remain airborne for more than two days without requiring refueling, gathering intelligence from high altitudes. Last year, a larger Heron TP drone crashed on a routine flight.

First F124 engine for Israeli Ministry of Defense rolls off the line
Honeywell joint venture reaches major milestone M-346
A major milestone in the $735 million contract between the International Turbine Engine Company LLC (ITEC) and Israel’s Ministry of Defense (IMOD) came to fruition September 17 as the first F124 engine rolled off the production line in Phoenix. Headquartered in Phoenix, ITEC is a 30-year joint venture between Honeywell Aerospace and Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC).
Deliveries of the Honeywell/ITEC F124-GA-200, a low-bypass turbofan engine derived from the augmented TFE1042-70 engine, will begin in September 2013 and continue through November 2015. The 68 engines are destined for the Israel Ministry of Defense’s new 30-strong Alenia Aermacchi M-346 “Lavi” advanced jet trainer fleet and will begin service for IMOD in July 2014 when they are scheduled to take delivery of the first aircraft.
“Additional engines and other key program deliverables will follow as we prepare for a flawless entry into service for the M-346 in Israel,” said Matt Thraen, President of ITEC. “With more than 700,000 flight hours across the entire F124/F125 engine family to date, the F124-GA-200 engines will deliver proven and reliable propulsion performance to the IMOD’s M-346 fleet.”
In addition to maximum performance for training flexibility, ease of maintenance and low cost, the F124 delivers significant flight safety benefits. The F124 is designed to be highly resistant to midair engine cutouts such as surges or stalls, and further improves safety through a number of automated control systems that reduce pilot workload and help keep the pilot focused on flying the aircraft.
The F124/F125 engine family has now been selected by five international defense departments and is operational with the Taiwan Air Force (ROCAF), Czech Air Force, Italian Air Force and the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
The F124 remains a key element in the Alenia M-346/T-100 entry into the United States Air Force T-X competition that will replace the aging T-38 trainers with an advanced, modern trainer and training system for future F-35 fighter pilots. - See more at: http://aerospace.honeywell.com/markets/defense/2013/10-October/f124#sthash.sLD6qK1J.dpuf

First two Israeli F-35s to be delivered to Luke AFB in 2016
The first two Lockheed Martin F-35A Joint Strike Fighters destined for Israel will be delivered to Luke AFB, Arizona, in 2016, the company says.
The two Israeli jets will be used for training alongside US Air Force units which will stand up at the base next year. According to Lockheed, all international pilot training for the F-35A will eventually transition to Luke AFB. The base will receive its first Australian F-35A for training in 2014.
Israel will receive seven more F-35A aircraft in 2017 and another batch of 10 in 2018, which will be based in the Middle Eastern country for operational use. Israel has ordered a total of 19 F-35s thus far, but is considering the purchase of a further 20 aircraft—which would enable it to field two squadrons.
Israel hopes to be able to integrate additional indigenously-developed electronic warfare (EW) systems onto a second batch of jets should such a purchase proceed.

IAI seeks foreign investors to develop new missile warship
IAI seeks foreign investors to develop new missile warship
TEL AVIV, Israel, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Israel Aerospace Industries is developing a new missile warship that will give its navy greater firepower, but it's looking for foreign investors and says several countries are interested.
In the meantime, IAI, the flagship of Israeli's bustling defense industry, is moving ahead with a Defense Ministry order for three advanced Super Dvora Mark III patrol craft to boost protection for the Jewish state's natural gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean. The Globes business daily reported the new design is still on the drawing board at IAI's Ramta plant in the Negev Desert city of Beersheva, but it will be the largest warship developed by the state-owned company amid an unprecedented upgrade for the navy. The 96-foot vessel will be known as the Multirole Super Dvora. Nitzan Shaked, a reserve navy officer with command experience who's the general manager at the Ramta plant, observed: "We're in the preliminary development stage ... . The basic idea is to offer a ship with many more capabilities, while making sure it won't be too expensive or too big." The MSD is the latest in IAI's line of surface combat ships, starting with the Dabur torpedo patrol boat. Fifteen of them remain in service. The Dabur evolved into the larger and faster Dvora, which in turn produced the Super Dvora patrol craft that the navy still procures. IAI announced in September the navy had ordered three more Super Dvora Mark IIIs to add to the four already in service, acquired under a 2004 contract. Globes reported the aging Daburs will be mothballed when the new MSDs are commissioned. The MSD is expected to be armed with various versions of IAI's Barak air-defense missile, which is also carried by the navy's three Saar 5-class corvettes, Israel's largest warships, and 8 Saar 4.5 coastal patrol craft. The new craft will be equipped with the advanced radar developed by IAI subsidiary Elta systems, along with anti-missile defense systems and electo-optical systems for operating at night and in bad weather. The Multirole Super Dvoras, like the Super Dvoras, will be powered by engines manufactured by Germany's MTU Aero Engines AG at its Detroit facility. Otherwise, the MSDs will be fitted with Israeli systems, including the 25-30mm Typhoon cannon built by state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and the communications systems made by Orbit Technologies. The Israeli navy deploys the various Dvora craft on coastal patrol missions, primarily counter-terrorism operations. The navy, long Israel's Cinderella service, is being expanded in a multiyear build-up process, with more advanced missile-armed surface vessels and a fleet of German-built diesel-electric Dolphin-class submarines that make the Israeli navy the most powerful in the Middle East. Three subs are operational and three more-advanced models are under construction at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG yards in Kiel. All are expected to be operational by 2017. The boats, based on the German Type-209 hunter-killer design, are said to be able to carry nuclear-tipped cruise missiles that give the Israeli navy a strategic function for the first time. The rich gas fields that Israel has found in its Exclusive Economic Zone in the Mediterranean have added a new dimension to the navy's responsibilities, and could aggravate tensions in the region amid the civil war in Syria, Israel's northern neighbor. The patrol craft will be extensively deployed around the maritime infrastructure that will help transform Israel economy and make it a major energy power in the region. IAI's Shaked told Globes that it is not yet clear whether the Israeli navy will invest in the Multirole Super Dvora. Company officials say, given hefty cuts in the defense budget, the major financing for the project will likely come from overseas. "The condition for this project to materialize is finding the means to finance, it," Shaked said. "We're already in talks with several countries which have expressed an interest in the program and will want to procure the new platform ... I hope we'll succeed in reaching understandings and agreements in 2014."

Israeli Navy building up a fleet of sophisticated next-generation submarines
They move silently underwater, but don’t let the quiet fool you – these are sophisticated tools of war. This unseen world is the everyday landscape of the Israel Navy. A special IDF submarine course is training increasingly larger numbers of sailors to operate the Navy’s next generation of submarines. Three of these submarines originated in the IDF’s possession, and an additional submarine was brought to Israel as part of an agreement with Germany.
The stealth of submarines provides Israel with a key advantage in top-secret operations. ”Our contribution during times of peace is with tremendous amounts of intelligence. The submarine is a spy tool and we do not ignore that,” stressed Major Y, the commander of the submarine operation school at major a naval training base. “During times of war, submarines are one of the most far-reaching instruments in the IDF. You do not know where it is and do not know where it will sink you,” Major Y added.
One of the Dolphin class Submarine (SSK) currently in service in the Israeli Navy
“Six months ago, our largest submarine course began, so that we would have enough people to run the new submarines,” said Major Y. Even with larger numbers of soldiers being drafted into submarine service, the evaluation process for recruits is highly competitive. Of those seeking to join the crew, only one out of every ten is accepted.
After the arrival of the Tanin (Crocodile) submarine last year, the Navy expects to add another advanced submarine, the INS Rahav, to its fleet in 2014. “The new submarines are almost identical to the ones before, but they are newer and bigger,” said Major Y. In anticipation of the vessel’s arrival, the Navy is updating lesson plans and syllabi for the training of its newest operators. Some of the course’s graduates will have the opportunity to inaugurate the new submarine when it arrives.
According to Major Y., Israel’s submarines are among the most advanced in the world. “The incoming submarines are the best conventional submarines in the world,” he said. I think we’re at one of the highest levels of submarine operation, both in terms of safety and in terms of preparedness.”
Serving in a submarine is highly confidential work, and the Navy reveals little of the actual intensity it involves. “There are always submarines at sea. Wherever you place your finger on a map of the sea, there may be a submarine there,” Major Y stressed.

Aeronautics Ltd., an Israel based world leading UAS manufacturer, has been awarded a contract for long-term support of Orbiter Mini Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) by the NATO Support Agency (NSPA). As part of the contract, Aeronautics will conduct a mid-life upgrade program for the Orbiter MUAS fleet of a NATO member military force which currently operates the system in Afghanistan. The $10M worth program includes full renovation and modernization of the Orbiter fleet during the next 2 years. In addition, the program will also include a rich spare-parts inventory that will enable the Orbiter MUAS user to operate the majority of its existing Orbiter systems during the upgrade program term, while maintaining its operational capabilities. The multi-year support contract enables also other NATO members and partner organizations to purchase systems and support services through NSPA. ”We are proud to be included in a very short list of excellent companies providing UAS equipment and services to NATO members and partners through NSPA”, said today Aeronautics CEO, Amos Mathan. “This upgrade program was carefully designed in close cooperation with NSPA, enabling the user to modernize its Orbiter fleet while maintaining the operational levels of its existing systems, creating a smooth transformational period.
Ynet : “The Ministry of Defense’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure (Mafat) has set the next challenge for Israel’s defense industry: do for unmanned submarines what it did for unmanned aerial warfare. If the defense industry moves quickly and purposefully in identifying this emerging market, and offers a well-functioning unmanned submarine, it could be riding the right wave in a decade from now: Mafat aeronautics division director Dr. Yuval Cohen estimates that the market will be worth $2 billion a year in 2020”.
