In a request for information (RfI) released to industry on 26 February, NAVSEA said it anticipates that two aluminium monohulls with a nominal length of 35 m will be procured for delivery in early 2019 under the US Foreign Military Sales programme.

The British press brings news that SAS fighters have been operating in Libya for several months, alongside Jordanian forces.

This coincides with a growing drumbeat for war in the country, where the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) has found a new territorial foothold in the oil-rich Sirte region. The United States is currently weighing up a bombing campaign to put the ‘”unity”‘ government back in power.

How did ISIL find a new home in Libya? The explanation casts doubt on any idea that simple military power will solve the problem.

La Jordanie opte pour le Pilatus PC-21 !  



Stans, et de sept pour le PC-21 ! Pilatus Aircraft Ltd vient d'annoncer que la Force aérienne Royal Jordanian (RJAF) a opté pour l’achat de 8 Pilatus PC-21 écoles. Cette commande remplace celle d’août 2015, dans laquelle le pays avait porté son choix sur le PC-9M. Ce changement semble également confirmer que la RJAF prépare la modernisation de sa flotte d'avions de combat avec le choix d'un nouvel aéronef d'ici 2020.

La Force aérienne Royal de Jordanie a en effet revu son cahier des charges et demandé à l’avionneur suisse de modifier son choix en direction de la dernière génération d’avion école que représente le PC-21. La commande comprend également un simulateur, du matériel de formation et un ensemble complet de soutien logistique.

Soucieux de moderniser ses installations de formation de pilotes, la RJAF a opté pour le Pilatus le PC-21, sachant qu'il fournira des performances excellentes et un rapport coût-efficacité pour la formation de base et avancées de ces pilotes.

Pour l’avionneur suisse il s’agit du septième client pour le PC-21 et le sixième à l’exportation. Les pays utilisateurs sont la Suisse (8 ), Singapour (19), l’Arabie Saoudite (55), Emirats arabes unis (25), le Qatar (24) l’Australie (49) et la Jordanie (8 ).

La génération PC-21:

Le PC-21 permet une formation complète des élèves pilotes et ceci avec des possibilités offrant une nouvelle dimension. En effet, il s’agit là, d’un système d’écolage en vol performant, qui remplace totalement la transition sur avion école à réaction de type Hawk ou Alpha jet. En effet, le PC-21 offre la possibilité unique au monde d’assurer une transition directe, vers des chasseurs modernes, tels que les F/A-18, Rafale, Gripen, Eurofighter, F-35 pour ne citer que ceux-là. Il est également possible d’opter pour une combinaison en binôme avec un jet école, dans ce cas la formation sur jet peut être réduite en nombre d’heure. Les coûts de formation, de maintenance sont très largement diminués, sans oublier la réduction significative des nuisances sonores et de l’optimisation de la consommation de kérosène. L'avion permet une simulation complète et ceci sans armement, car ceux-ci sont simulés grâce à une interface spécialement développée pour l’avion.

Jordan has started talks with Russia for a small number of Su-34 fighter bombers, that reported newspaper “Kommersant”.






Ivan Safronov said that, now make a deal hampered by several factors, chief among which is the orientation of Amman on arms purchases in the United States and the unstable situation in the country.

The Sukhoi Su-34 is a Russian twin-engined, twin-seat strike fighter. It is intended to replace the Sukhoi Su-24.

Based on the Sukhoi Su-27 ‘Flanker’, the two-seat Su-34 is designed primarily for tactical deployment against ground and naval targets (tactical bombing/attack/interdiction roles, including against small and mobile targets) on solo and group missions in daytime and at night, under favourable and adverse weather conditions and in a hostile environment with counter-fire and EW counter-measures deployed, as well as for aerial reconnaissance.

AFSOC helping Jordan to build up AT-802 light strike turboprop capabilities

The US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is currently aiding the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) in building up the capabilities of its IOMAX AT-802 Block 1 Border Patrol Aircraft (BPA) force, it was recently disclosed.

An image released by the Air Force Reserve Command on 19 April shows maintainers from the 711th Special Operations Squadron (the reserve component of AFSOC's 6th Special Operations Squadron [Aviation Foreign Internal Defense]) supporting an IOMAX AT-802 Block 1 BPA of "an allied force" on a deployed operation in March.

A source has confirmed to IHS Jane's that the image was taken in Jordan and that the 6th Special Operations Squadron (SOS), which is tasked with assessing, training, advising, and assisting foreign nation aviation forces worldwide, is helping to train Jordanian pilots on the aircraft also. As the mission integrator, IOMAX is working closely with AFSOC to first train the 6th SOS's pilots on the aircraft and weapons systems before that special operations unit passes on this knowledge to the RJAF.

The Jordanians were gifted six AT-802 BPA Block 1 aircraft by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2013. These aircraft were delivered to RJAF with a fully functional laser guided weapons capability; however, they were limited to GBU-58 (250 lb) precision-guided munitions (PGMs) and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles due to wing pylon weight limitations. The RJAF is currently working with the UAE and IOMAX to upgrade the six Block 2 BPAs to Block 2 standard, enabling them to carry GBU-12 (500 lb) PGMs and Cirit laser-guided rockets as well.

Further to the six IOMAX AT-802s, the RJAF has also received four AT-802Us that have instead been built by Air Tractor and L-3 Communications. These aircraft were part of a US government programme destined for Yemen, and were never delivered.

It should be noted that, while both are built around a common platform and so look much the same on the outside, the Air Tractor/L-3 Communications and IOMAX platforms are very different in terms of their internal make-up and systems.

atra Trucks has signed an agreement with Jordan and Egypt to supply truck chassis.

Czech Tatra said that Jordan has imported 50 chassis on which local company KADDB (King Abdullah Design and Development Burea) builds its own military vehicle. This is a second batch after an initial 80 were exported.

Egypt has signed an agreement with Tatra Trucks to supply 130 truck chassis and is in discussions to supply another 220. This is according to Petr Rusek, chairman of the board of Tatra Trucks, who said that the Czech company had signed contracts worth CZK800 million ($33 million) with both Egypt and Jordan to supply specialised chassis.

Tatra makes heavy-duty, all-wheel-drive, off-road trucks and chassis-cabs. Tatra’s products range from 5-ton payload 4x4s up to 39-ton payload 12x12s. Tatra also manufactures a line of air-cooled diesel engines, transmissions and portal axles. The company`s integrated line of commercial and military products are distributed globally through Tatra dealers and other affiliated companies.

Under the patronage of Jordanian King Abdullah II and in collaboration with the Jordanian Joint Special Operations Command, the four-day SOFEX event takes place as the Hashemite Kingdom takes on an ever-increasing role in the global war against the Islamic State state and other extremist groups spreading terrorism and anarchy in the region and beyond.

“Jordan has proven itself to be extremely effective in combating terror and providing for its homeland security,” said Riad Kahwaji, initiator of the MESOC conference, now in its eighth year. “Jordan has played a big role in training of the Iraqi Army and its King Abdullah Special Operations Training Center (KASOTC) has become the place to go for the type of training needed to meet today’s threats.”

Des UH-60 « Black-Hawk » pour la Jordanie !




La Royale Force aérienne jordanienne (RJAF) a reçu une flotte de huit hélicoptères Sikorsky UH-60M « Black Hawk ». Les Etats-Unis ont fourni ces hélicoptères provenant des stocks de l'armée. Le premier appareil est arrivés novembre et le dernier en mars. Un second lot de huit appareils sera livré en fin d’année.

La lutte contre le terrorisme islamique :

La décision des Etats-Unis de livrer des hélicoptères Sikorsky UH-60 « Black-Hawk » fait partie d’une aide qui a pour but le renforcement de la force de réaction rapide (QRF) jordanienne dans le cadre d'une initiative visant à prévenir la propagation de Daesh et d'autres groupes extrémistes dans le royaume. La force comprend des unités de l'armée régulière jordanienne qui peuvent être rapidement déployées pour contrer les incursions le long des frontières de la Jordanie avec l'Irak et la Syrie.

Aide israélienne :

En juillet de l’année dernière (avia news du 24.07) l’Etat hébreu avait donné son excédent d’hélicoptères de Bell AH-1 « Cobra » d’attaque à la Jordanie. Une nouvelle très étonnante à l’époque de la part des deux vieux ennemis.

Le QRF jordanienne :

La force de réaction rapide jordanienne dispose aujourd’hui de 16 hélicoptères Bell AH-1E/F « Cobra » livré par Israël, de 8 Sikorsky UH-60M « Black-Hawk » et de deux Airbus AC235 « Gunships » livrés en 2014.

Le Sikorsky UH-60 « Black-Hawk » :



Le Black-Hawk est un hélicoptère utilitaire moyen développé pour l’armée américaine. Conçu par Sikorsky pour remplacer le célèbre UH-1, cet hélicoptère effectua son premier vol en 1974 et fut admis au service actif en 1979. Malgré son coût élevé, le Black-Hawk est un hélicoptère tactique très apprécié et qui possède d'excellentes qualités de vol et une bonne maniabilité. Le Black-Hawk se décline en près de 17 versions spécialisées.

Sikorsky UH-60M «Black-Hawk» dispose de la motorisation de type General-Electric T-700-701D, montés au dessus de la cabine. Cette dernière est conçue pour amortir au mieux, les chocs en cas de crash, il dispose de deux larges portes coulissantes assez large pour accueillir jusqu’à 20 personnes. La survie est améliorée par une résistance accrue aux impacts de balles et de canons, grâce à différents blindages et une redondance des systèmes.

AH-1E/F « Cobra » :



Les 16 hélicoptères livrés par Israël à la Jordanie sont des qui Bell AH-1E/F « Cobra », qui ont pris leur retraite de l'armée de l'air israélienne en 2013. Ceux-ci ont été rénovés avant le transfert à la Royal Jordanian Air Force. Ces 16 hélicoptères AH-1 ont rejoint les 12 aéronefs déjà en service au sein des escadrons 10 et 12 basés à Zarqa, au nord-est de la capitale, Amman. Le Bell AH-1E/F « Cobra » est armés de missiles BGM-71A « TOW » de roquettes de 70 mm, ainsi que du canon en tourelle M197 « Gatling » de 20mm.

AC235 « Gunships » :



Ces appareils en service dans la Royal Jordanian Air Force font partie d’une demande de contrat faite entre la société ATK et le roi Abdallah II. ATK a développé et fourni les modifications et l'intégration des systèmes au sein d’appareils de type CASA235.Ces modifications comprennent l'installation, d'un système de ciblage électro-optique, un désignateur laser, des équipements d'autoprotection, un radar ouverture synthétique, ainsi qu’une capacité d'armement qui peut fournir une puissance de feu durable et précise dans une variété de scénarios. L’avion emporte des missiles AGM-114 «Hellfire» à guidage laser, des roquettes de 2,75 pouces et un canon Alliant Techsystems M230 de 30mm (le même que les hélicoptères «Apache») monté sur le côté du fuselage. Cette arme est automatiquement alignée sur la cible par une caméra en liaison et le système radar. L’avion est également doté d’une caméra FLIR reconnaissance.

Jordan's King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) has built and tested an upgraded thermal imaging system for the Al Hussein main battle tank (MBT) in service with the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF).

The Al Hussein is the locally named version of the British Army Challenger 1 MBT. More than 400 of these were transferred to the JAF after the introduction of the Challenger 2 platform.

The tanks are fitted with a then Barr & Stroud (now Thales Optronics) Thermal Imaging and Gunnery Sight (TOGS), which is mounted externally on the right side of the turret and moves in elevation with the Royal Ordnance 120 mm L11A5 rifled gun.

But as this has a low reliability factor, according to KADDB, the company has replaced the original sensor and scanner, modified the camera housing, and fitted a new cooled thermal imager from an undisclosed source. The associated electronics and mechanical parts have also been replaced.

This upgrade is claimed to have increased the efficiency, reliability, and performance of the TOGS, while retaining compatibility with the turret by keeping the old casing structure.

The JAF currently maintains 12 MBT battalions, eight equipped with the Al Hussein and four with US-supplied General Dynamics Land Systems M60A3 platforms. These are armed with a 105 mm M68 rifled tank gun and feature Raytheon's new integrated fire-control system (FCS).

All of the JAF's 274 Khalid (also known as Shir 1 in Iranian service) and Tariq (modernised Centurion) MBTs have been phased out of service.

It has also been revealed that KADDB has developed and tested a thermal imaging system for use on the Russian ZSU-23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAG) used by the JAF.

Mounted co-axially with the original day sight, this moves in elevation with the main armament and has two modes of operation: silent surveillance and gun following.

Under the US Army awarded contract, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control has to supply 290 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) alternative warhead rocket pods, 34 unitary rocket pods and 529 reduced range practice rocket pods, the US Department of Defense announced Thursday.

GMLRS is an all-weather rocket designed for fast deployment that delivers precision strike beyond the reach of most conventional weapons. GMLRS Unitary rockets greatly exceed the required combat reliability rate and have established a reputation for affordability.

The Alternative Warhead is designed to engage the same target set and achieve the same area-effects requirement as the old MLRS submunition warheads, but without the lingering danger of unexploded ordnance.

Work will be performed in Grand Prairie, Texas; and Camden, Arkansas, with an estimated completion date of March 31, 2018.

Raytheon-Jordan Border Defense Against ISIS Enters Final Phase

MARKA, Jordan — A US-funded partnership between Jordan and Raytheon is entering the final phase of a nearly $100 million program to guard the Hashemite Kingdom against infiltrators from the Islamic State group and other extremist organizations operating beyond its border with Syria and Iraq.

Fiscally supported by the Pentagon’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), the Jordan Border Security Project is now operational along a 160-mile stretch bordering Syria and another 115-mile demarcation line with Iraq.

Come August, the Raytheon-Jordanian industry team will start transitioning full sustainment operations to the Jordanian Armed Forces, according to US and Jordanian industry executives.

Once the transition is complete, the Jordanian military will assume full responsibility for patrolling the borders with rapid response vehicles, manning stationary watchtowers and running an operational command center to be supported by the firm’s in-country company headquarters.

“We’re now entering the full sustainment phase," said Andrei Gugiu, director for border security and critical infrastructure protection at Raytheon’s Intelligence, Information and Services division. "We’re transitioning 100 percent of preventive maintenance to the Jordanian Armed Forces by August of this year."

Cinq membres des services de renseignements ont été tués lundi dans une "attaque terroriste" contre leur bureau dans le camp des réfugiés palestiniens de Baqa'a au nord de la capitale jordanienne, a annoncé le gouvernement.
"Le bureau des services de renseignements dans le camp de Baqa'a a été la cible d'une attaque ignoble aujourd'hui (lundi) peu avant 7H00 (4H00 GMT), faisant cinq morts parmi ses membres", a annoncé le porte-parole du gouvernement Mohamed Momani.

Selon M. Momani, les services de sécurité étaient "en train d'enquêter sur les circonstances de l'attaque terroriste et traquer les coupables".

Une source des services de sécurité a précisé de son côté que "selon les informations préliminaires, l'attaque a été menée par une seule personne qui a tiré sur les martyrs (...) d'une arme automatique avant de prendre la fuite".

Cette source qui s'exprimait sous couvert de l'anonymat n'était pas en mesure de préciser si l'auteur de l'attaque était du camp de Baqa'a.

M. Momani a précisé qu'un gardien, un employé et trois sous-officiers avaient été tués dans l'attaque qui coïncide avec le premier jour du mois saint de ramadan.

La Jordanie participe depuis 2014 à la coalition internationale contre l'organisation Etat islamique (EI) en Irak et en Syrie, conduite par les Etats-Unis.

En mars, Amman avait annoncé avoir déjoué des attaques du groupe (EI) après un vaste coup de filet qui s'est soldé par la mort de sept jihadistes, soulevant des inquiétudes quant à la menace terroriste dans le royaume frontalier de la Syrie.

Ouvert en 1968 pour accueillir les réfugiés palestiniens après la guerre israélo-arabe de 1967, le camp de Baqa'a, devenu aujourd'hui une ville, compte plus de 100.000 réfugiés enregistrés auprès de l'UNRWA (l'agence des Nations unies pour l'aide aux réfugiés palestiniens).

The younger brother of His Majesty King Abdullah II was accompanied by the representatives of the French Ministry of Defense and VOLAT agent in Jordan “Act Consulting and Trading”. VOLAT General Director Igor Letov made a presentation of VOLAT manufacturing capabilities for important guest and demonstrated to His Royal Highness vehicles at the stand.

At the Eurosatory 2016 VOLAT exhibited the recently designed tactical trucks from the newest MZKT-6001 series: MZKT-500200, -600103, -600203 and light-armored vehicle MZKT-490100.

MZKT-500200, with the wheel drive 4×4, strengthened frame and platform for operation in the conditions of cross-country and off-roads, has a platform length 6000 mm and the curb vehicle weight 6,400 kg.

MZKT-600103 (6×6) and MZKT-600203 (8× with Caterpillar С13 engine, Allison 4500SP automatic transmission and the curb vehicle weight 14000 and 17,000 kg accordingly are the newest tactical vehicles from the MZKT-6001 series.

A light-armored vehicle MZKT-490100 with the wheel drive 4×4, automatic transmission and the gross vehicle weight 11,000 kg was presented to the world for the first time. It was designed as a base product for specialized tactical vehicles development and can be used for all types of roads as APC, C2, reconnaissance, military police, logistics and ambulance vehicle.

MZKT was set up in Minsk in 1954 when Belarus was part of the Soviet Union and specializes in making heavy off-road vehicles, especially military trucks.

A final instalment of 25 Cheetah self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAGs) has now arrived in Jordan.

Decommissioned by the Armed Forces of the Netherlands in 2006, the Cheetah (Gepard in German service) consists of a modified Leopard 1 tank hull armed with twin 35 mm Rheinmetall Air Defence (previously Oerlikon Contraves) guns and equipped with surveillance and tracking radars.

The Netherlands agreed to sell 60 Cheetahs to Jordan in 2013. At that time, the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the deal also included training, 350,000 rounds of surplus ammunition, 22 Bofors 40L70 40 mm towed anti-aircraft guns, 11 Thales Flycatcher radars, 5 Leopard 1 armoured engineering vehicles, and 14 Leopard 1/Cheetah hulls for spares, conversion, or training.

The Dutch MoD announced in the latest issue of its Materieelgezien magazine that the final shipment of 25 Cheetahs had left the port of Eemshaven. It said 15 Cheetahs had already been delivered to the Royal Jordanian Air Force in 2014 and another 20 in 2015. It also released a video showing Cheetahs firing during training in Jordan.

The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf released a video on 22 June showing the Cheetahs being loaded on to the roll-on/off cargo vessel Bahri Jeddah (IMO 9626522) at Eemshaven. IHS Maritime & Trade data show Bahri Jeddah left Eemshaven on 22 June and arrived at the Jordanian port of Aqaba on 16 July.
