Northrop Grumman successfully SABR Fit-Checks an F-16 at Edwards AFB
July 23, 2009 (by Asif Shamim) - Northrop Grumman Corporation's newest active electronically scanned array (AESA) fighter sensor, the Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR), has been successfully installed on a F-16 at Edwards Air Force Base.
In November, SABR began a series of flight demonstrations aboard the company's test aircraft, successfully detecting and displaying multiple aerial targets and generating high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ground maps.
"The fit-check completed on June 29, is another important milestone leading up to a planned F-16 flight demonstration later this year," said Arlene Camp, director of Advanced F-16 Radar Programs at Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems Division. "Installation took less than five hours and assessed SABR's design goals to integrate seamlessly within existing F-16 Block 50/52 physical constraints for interface to aircraft power, cooling, and avionics."
The aircraft was returned to original configuration after the installation evaluation.
"Northrop Grumman is the sole provider of radars for the F-16 and for over 30 years has continually improved the F-16 radar's performance and reliability. SABR is Northrop Grumman's latest investment towards enhancing and sustaining the F-16's combat capability for decades to come," added Camp.
Although designed specifically for the F-16, SABR is scalable and adaptable to other platforms and missions. In comparison to the mechanically-scanned array radars it is designed to replace, the new radar will provide increased performance, multi-functionality and greater reliability.
With a greater detection and tracking range, high-resolution SAR maps, and interleaved mode operations it will provide pilots with better situational awareness and all-environment precision strike capability.
The Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) from Northrop Grumman will be a full performance fire control Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) derived from proven AESA technology for F-16 aircraft.

Belgian practice bomb gone missing over Germany
July 26, 2009 (by Lieven Dewitte) - The German military is looking for an imitation bomb, dropped over Germany by a Belgian F-16 fighter jet during a training flight last Monday.
"The search is still on," for the 50-centimeter-long training bomb weighing four kilograms, a German Defense Ministry spokesman said.
The incident caused no damage. The dud munition is thought to be in the Cloppenburg district, in the state of Lower Saxony. The dummy bomb measures 50 centimeters and weighs about 4 kilograms.
The Luftwaffe has requested a clarification of the incident from its Belgian counterpart.
After the Belgian Air Component had informed the German Air Force, military police from Wilhelmshaven was sent out for the search operation, which has so far been unsuccessful.
It is not uncommon for practice bombs to fall off F-16s. Last year in March for example, a BDU-33 fell from a U.S.A.F. F-16 in Oklahoma, striking an apartment building.

F16IN Super viper ?!! pourquoi ne pas dire block60 tout court...
Citation :
The F-16IN Super Viper is a unique new fighter sharing a heritage with the world's only fifth generation fighters – the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter and the F-22 Raptor. Evolutionary integration of fifth generation technologies makes the F-16IN the most advanced fourth generation fighter in the world today. This ultimate fourth generation fighter is tailored exclusively to meet or exceed all of India’s Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) requirements. The F-16IN is the right choice for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and is ready for integration into India’s infrastructure and operations now.
The ability of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics to incorporate the latest technologies into the F-16IN is the key to expanding mission roles and improving combat capability, therefore creating the most effective multi role fighter today. With a robust upgrade capacity and the continuous insertion of technology, the F-16IN can be readily equipped with emerging capabilities throughout its lifecycle. The Super Viper has the most advanced technologies and capabilities available today on the international market. It is truly the ultimate fourth generation fighter with all it brings to the battlefield.
Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar The Northrop Grumman APG-80 AESA radar is the only AESA operational in the international market today. This revolutionary all-weather, precision targeting sensor has been exported by the United States government and is defending a sovereign nation today; no other MMRCA competitor can make that claim. The APG-80 AESA radar provides outstanding situational awareness and detection; ultrahigh-resolution synthetic aperture radar mapping, fully interleaved modes of operations with automatic terrain following; and air-to-air tracking of multiple targets.
Net-Centric Warfare Capability The fusion of net-centric operations and onboard data provides a total battle space picture and optimizes mission accomplishment. The F-16 was the first multi-role fighter to incorporate a data link capability, and the IAF's Operational Data Link (ODL) can be integrated onto the F-16IN when available, ensuring interoperability with other IAF aircraft. Data integrates through all phases of the mission – from mission planning, navigation, communication and target prosecution to return to base – transforming the pilot from an aircraft system manager to a tactician
Modern, Full-Color, All-Digital Glass Cockpit Pilots receive easy-to-interpret information via the all-digital cockpit and helmet -mounted cueing system. The large color displays are capable of fusing data from on- and off-board sensors, reducing the workload and enabling the pilot to focus on the mission. Advanced Survivability Features The low radar signature of the F-16IN reduces detection by enemy radars. Its single-engine design has smaller infrared and visual signature than twin-engine fighters. The internal electronic warfare and towed decoy systems, provided by Raytheon, avoid or defeat the most advanced threats. Raytheon's combat-proven EW systems are deployed on F-16 aircraft worldwide. Superior agility and excellent pilot situational awareness reduce vulnerability to attack, while critical systems redundancy and shielding enhance survivability.
Enhanced High Thrust Engine The F-16IN offers the highest thrust engine in the competition, the General Electric F110-132A. It has 32,000 pounds of thrust with an unprecedented record of safety, reliability, maintainability and durability. The F110 incorporates the latest technology, including full authority digital engine control, for maximum fuel efficiency and performance. Safety, Reliability and Maintainability The F-16IN is the most reliable, maintainable and safest multirole fighter in the world . . . based on more than 13 million flight hours in peacetime and combat operations. Also, our support approach provides the lowest life-cycle cost and is consistent with existing IAF maintenance practices

F-16 block 70..

Lockheed Martin Leverages Sensor Capability Of Fighter Aircraft To Improve Battlespace Awareness F-16 Provides Innovative Way to Increase Tactical ISR Persistence
Denver, Colo., September 1st, 2009 -- Existing on-board sensor capability of tactical fighter aircraft can be leveraged to provide near real-time intelligence and enhanced situational awareness, as demonstrated by Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] during the recent U.S. Air Force Empire Challenge exercise.
For the first time, the Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS) received and processed electronic warfare data from an F-16CJ aircraft, which relayed signals information from the air to a ground station and pushed report-level data out to the intelligence and operational communities.
“In this era of irregular warfare, it’s imperative to get real-time intelligence to warfighters that are in theater,” said Jim Quinn, vice president with Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems & Global Services-Defense. “Taking advantage of the fact that fighters get to the tactical edge faster than conventional ISR platforms, we proved that we can enhance intelligence sharing across both the ISR and command and control communities by using the Air Force DCGS to process and relay sensor data from fighter aircraft.”
Typically, fighter aircraft operate in the forward-edge of the battlespace with self-protection sensors. But those sensors could also provide increased intelligence collection over hostile areas by sending their data off board for analysis and integration.
During the Empire Challenge exercise, the Lockheed Martin team used a modified F-16CJ aircraft equipped with a HARM Targeting System pod to send signals intelligence directly to the Air Force DCGS via a developmental Advanced Tactical Data Link. By leveraging the power of modern data links and Global Information Grid-like networks, the F-16CJ was able to down-link sensor data real-time to the DCGS at Langley AFB in Virginia for processing. In seconds, the resulting SIGINT report was posted to the DCGS Integration Backbone, which contributed to enhanced situational awareness and enabled tactical and strategic users to receive the reports. Lockheed Martin’s fighter-based ISR initiative proved both the technical ease and operational benefit of leveraging existing sensor systems to improve persistent surveillance of the battlespace. Empire Challenge 09 is an annual exercise hosted by U.S. Joint Forces Command to demonstrate enhanced ISR and C2 interoperability and capabilities.
