Army helicopter crash in Sudan kills 2 crew
A Sudanese military spokesman says a military training helicopter has crashed in the country's south, killing its two crew members.
KHARTOUM, Sudan — A Sudanese military spokesman says a military training helicopter has crashed in the country's south, killing its two crew members.
Col. Sawarmy Khalid was quoted on Thursday by SUNA, Sudan's official news agency, as saying that the crash was an accident.
Khalid says the helicopter hit a high voltage electricity pole in Damzain in southeastern Sudan. Damzain is the capital of Blue Nile state. No further details were available.
The government in Khartoum has been facing an insurgency in the Blue Nile state and has accused its southern neighbor, South Sudan, of helping rebels there.

Sudan receives first Su-24 attack aircraft
Citation :
The Sudanese Air Force has increased its ground attack capabilities by acquiring Sukhoi Su-24 'Fencer' aircraft.
The acquisition has been confirmed by DigitalGlobe satellite imagery, which shows that the first Su-24 arrived at the Wadi Sayyidna (Seidna) Air Base north of Khartoum between 8 February and 18 March. Three of the distinctive swing-wing supersonic strike aircraft were visible at the air base in satellite imagery taken in June and August.
The presence of the Su-24s at Wadi Sayyidna was first reported by the Secret-difa3 blog on 18 August. The website said the aircraft had been recently retired by Belarus. Before the Belarusian Air Force announced the retirement in February, it listed 25 Su-24MK as being in its inventory, along with 12 Su-24MR reconnaissance variants.
Secret-difa3 also claimed that Belarus had begun delivery of a second batch of Su-25 'Frogfoot' attack aircraft to Sudan. The first batch was delivered in 2008-2010 and consisted of 15 aircraft, three of which were two-seat Su-25UB versions.
In a report released in February, the UN panel of experts that monitors the arms embargo on Darfur said Sudan had deployed some of its Su-25s to that region in contravention of Security Council Resolution 1591.
The Sudanese Air Force may now be in a position to redeploy these aircraft as it could use the superior speed of the Su-24s to carry out ground-attack sorties over Darfur from air bases outside the region.
The UN panel of experts report also included documentation showing that Belarus has shipped 3,998 S-8 air-to-ground rockets to Sudan in 2011; 2,748 were the S-8DM fuel-air-explosive version of the 80 mm rocket, the rest S-8KO anti-armour variants.
While the report said the rockets were intended to be used with Sudan's Su-25 aircraft, they could also be fired from the new Su-24s and other Soviet-designed jets and helicopters.

Sudan Adds Precision Bomber to Arsenal
DigitalGlobe imagery indicates that Sudan has acquired at least three Su- 24 (“Fencer”) supersonic precision bomber aircraft in recent months. The operational range of the Fencer is a little more than 600 kilometers, which would allow targeted air strikes from their current position in Wadi Seidna military air base into parts of Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile states. (See Figure 1 for graphic on operational range.) The Fencer can also carry two external fuel pods that would extend the range and loiter time over a target area. The acquisition of aircraft with precision targeting capability could signal a change from rolling crude bombs out the door of an AN-24/26 transport to conducting targeted strikes.
As early as March 2013, one Su-24 bomber was parked in the engine testing apron in the operational area of Wadi Seidna, located 25 kilometers northwest of Khartoum. (See Figure 2.) Wadi Seidna supports most of Sudan’s fighter and bomber aircraft, i.e. Mig-29, Nanchang Q-5, SU-25, (probably non-operational MiG-23, MiG-17) and AN-24/26 transports. The positioning of Su-24 aircraft in the airbase’s operational area in June 2013 suggests the aircraft was already in use at that time. Since then the aircraft have been seen elsewhere in the operations area and later on a parking apron. (See Figure 3.) The appearance of one of the Su-24 on the runway with wings unswept suggests impending flight. Based on historic observations of Sudanese air force operations, Digital Globe Analytics concludes that initial technical checks and pilot proficiency training are probably underway. To date, three Su-24 aircraft have been observed at Wadi Seidna, most recently on August 24, 2013.
Media reports state that Belarus sold 12 Su-24 aircraft to Sudan with an “end user certificate” that prohibits using the aircraft in Darfur.1 Passed in 2005, UN Security Council Resolution 1591 prohibits the Government of Sudan from acquiring aircraft for use in Darfur. The measure does not, however, expressly prohibit arms sales for use in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, where Sudan has consistently conducted aerial attacks.2 SSP and DigitalGlobe will monitor air bases in the south for future deployments of this aircraft.

Antonov interested in establishing maintenance facility in Sudan
Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Antonov has expressed interest in establishing a maintenance facility in Sudan that would serve the country as well as the rest of Africa, Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir has disclosed.
Al-Bashir on March 23 said the Ukrainian government had proposed setting up a maintenance facility to serve Africa at the Safat Aviation Complex, established in 2005 for the assembly, manufacture and maintenance of aircraft for Sudan’s military, reports the Sudan Tribune. Sudan’s Air Force has a number of Anonovs in service, including roughly half a dozen An-12s, half a dozen An-26s and half a dozen An-30/32s.
Sudan’s president also said that it will be mandatory for new military aircraft to be maintained at Safat, otherwise a contract will not be signed.
This is not the first time Antonov has considered establishing a maintenance facility in Sudan. During a visit to the Ukraine in February 2013, Sudan’s transport minister Babiker Ahmed Nahar discussed the possibility of establishing an Antonov maintenance and training facility in Sudan. Following the visit he said that Sudan was in talks to buy five Antonovs, either An-158 or An-148 models. The proposed facility is part of Sudan’s efforts to improve the domestic defence industry, something promoted by defence minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein. He said that stronger armed forces are needed to ease conflict in places like Darfur. Since the 1990s Chinese, Russian and Iranian companies have helped Sudan develop its domestic military industry, which manufactures small arms, artillery and armoured vehicles. The Military Industry Corporation (MIC) was established in 1993 to manufacture weapons and equipment for the Sudanese military and is now marketing its products internationally. Products include recoilless rifles, mortars, rocket launchers and upgraded armoured vehicles, amongst others.
For some time Antonov was engaged in discussions with Denel Aviation regarding marketing its aircraft in Africa and establishing a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centre on the continent. However, the partnership with Antonov has been paused for now as the majority of Antonov aircraft in Africa are not flying.
By Associated Press, Published: May 30 KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudan said Friday that it won’t install Iranian anti-aircraft missiles in the country after earlier exploring the idea following suspected Israeli airstrikes there in 2012.
A statement from Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country wouldn’t install the defensive missiles “for fear it could be misinterpreted by some Gulf states.”
In October 2012, Sudan claimed that Israeli airstrikes caused an explosion and fire at a military factory south of the capital, Khartoum, killing two people. It said four aircraft hit the Yarmouk complex, setting off a huge blast that rocked the capital before dawn.
Israel never claimed the attack, but Israeli officials at the time said Sudan played a key role in an Iranian-backed network of arms shipments to hostile Arab militant groups across the Middle East.
Sudan has been engaged in various armed conflicts for many years. Its government has been at war with rebels in the western region of Darfur and with its neighbors in South Sudan, which broke away to become Africa’s newest country in 2011.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Sudan was a major hub for al-Qaida militants and remains a transit for weapon smugglers and African migrant traffickers.
The U.S. imposed economic, trade and financial sanctions against Sudan in 1997, citing the Sudanese government’s support for terrorism, including its sheltering of al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden in the mid-1990s. In 1998, American cruise missiles bombed a Khartoum pharmaceutical factory suspected of links to al-Qaida.
In 2009, Sudan accused Israel of carrying out an airstrike on an arms convoy near the Red Sea in eastern Sudan.
