- 149th FW to train at Caslav AB in September
August 28, 2009 (by Asif Shamim) - The 149th FW, Texas Air National Guard will send six F-16 jet fighters to particpate in a 10-day training exercise at the Czech Air Force Base in Caslav, central Bohemia, starting on September 7 according to the Czech Defence Ministry.
The first troops are expected to arrive in Caslav on September 3. In all, 98 members of the Texas National Guard will come for the exercise.
Apart from training flights, the F-16 pilots and their Czech colleagues will also exchange experience of their participation in foreign missions during the September Squadron Exchange exercise.
This is not the first such exercise to be held. In 2007 Belgian F-16 pilots trained in Caslav alongside the Czechs.
In 2006, Swedish pilots of the Jas-39 Gripen fighters were on the training course at Caslav. The Jas-39 Gripen aircraft is also used by Czech pilots.
Next week, pilots from Caslav airbase will return from there first foreign mission after spending three months patrolling the air space of the three Baltic states which are members of NATO. http://www.f-16.net/news_article3800.html |

- U.S. President Obama cancels plans for anti-missile radar in Czech Republic
12:08 GMT, September 17, 2009 MOSCOW the U.S. president has told the Czech premier that Washington is abandoning the Bush administration's plans for an anti-missile radar in the country.
Czech officials confirmed the telephone conversation between Barack Obama and Jan Fischer late last night, the reports said. Prague is expected to issue a statement on the matter after receiving a formal document from Washington later on Thursday.
The George Bush administration sought to deploy a radar station in the Czech Republic as part of an anti-missile system, along with an interceptor missile base in Poland, as protection from potential strikes from Iran. Russia has opposed to the plans viewing them as a threat to the strategic balance of forces in Europe.
Also on Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported citing sources familiar with the issue that Washington will shelve the nuclear missile defense plans for Europe.
The paper said the United States will base its decision on an assessment that Iran's long-range missile program has not progressed as rapidly as previously estimated, reducing the threat to the U.S. and Europe's major cities. - Czech Army Orders Further 90 IVECO LMVs
11:46 GMT, December 29, 2009 IVECO Defence Vehicles announces that on December 18, 2009 the Czech Army placed order for a further batch of 90 Light Multirole Vehicles (LMV) in 3 different versions to be delivered between 2010 and 2013.
The contract signed now, which also includes related logistics support, is part of a joint purchase project of the Czech and the Slovak army aimed to ensure a better cooperation in their common battlegroups.
Between 2007 and 2009, the Czech army had already ordered 24 vehicles (crew carriers and with 12.7mm Kongsberg remote weapon station). This contract results from the customer’s full satisfaction with the performance and reliability of the first vehicles which have been already fielded in Afghanistan and have already proved effective in resisting IED attacks (to date 3 attacks with no casualties).
The LMV was selected for front line duties by the Italian (1260), the British (401 units), the Spanish (135 units), the Norwegian (60 units), the Belgian (440 units), the Croatian (10 units), the Austria (150 units) and Slovak forces (10 units). Other contracts are under negotiation.
Designed to incorporate high tactical mobility with high maximum road speed and optimal off-road and cross-country performance, the LMV has high protection levels against anti tank and anti personnel mines with an emphasis on crew protection rather than vehicle integrity.
High reliability, ease of maintenance and low through life costs were key considerations during the design of LMV. Built in and external diagnostics allow timely identification of impending malfunctions, allowing preventive maintenance to be undertaken, whilst the facility to collect functional data allows effective whole fleet management.
The use of COTS (Commercial off the Shelf) main assemblies such as the gearbox and engine ensures that performance and reliability have been proven over many millions of road miles in demanding environmental conditions. This provides an outstanding level of reliability and consequently excellent fleet availability.
The provision of anti-mine protection has also been given a high priority, with the over-riding aim being to ensure the survival of the crew. To this end, a normal control cab has been used and the results of the latest research into mine protection has been incorporated, including a vee-shaped vehicle bottom. This can be up-armoured as required to meet the appropriate level of threat. The overall structure of the vehicle has been designed in accordance with the ‘crashworthiness’ concept. The design of the vehicle itself and the materials which have been used in its construction are specifically designed to manage and absorb the blast energy generated by a mine detonation.
Figures on the LMV:
The LMV was selected by: • Italy (1286 units) • UK: (401 units) • Spain (135 units) • Norway (60 units) • Belgium (440 units) • Croatia (10 units) • Czech Republic (114 units) • Austria (150 units) • Slovak Republic (10 units)

SOURCE:Flight International Czech Republic outlines need for two KC-390s By Craig Hoyle
Embraer's recent steady flow of teaming announcements on the KC-390 tanker/transport programme has continued apace, with the Czech Republic becoming the latest nation to signal its intention to participate in production of the twinjet.
Brazilian and Czech defence ministers Nelson Jobim and Alexandr Vondra on 13 September signed a declaration of intent linked to the project, opening the way for negotiations on possible Czech industrial involvement. The Czech air force could also acquire two KC-390s under the pact.
Czech firm Aero Vodochody could manufacture the Brazilian-designed aircraft's rear fuselage, doors and wing leading edges, the nation's defence ministry says.
"We are very pleased with the interest shown by the Czech government in participating in the KC-390 programme," says Orlando José Ferreira Neto, Embraer's executive vice-president, defence market. Co-operation on the military transport "can be the beginning of a solid, long-term relationship", he believes.
Vondra agrees, noting: "We see a promising co-operation in the modernisation of older equipment."
Embraer's latest sign of support for the KC-390 came during what was the first senior-level meeting to have taken place between the Brazilian and Czech defence ministries. The nations also agreed to pursue co-operation in the training of army personnel, with Czech soldiers to visit Brazil for jungle training.
The first prototype KC-390 should be ready in late 2014 or 2015, with the transport to have a maximum cargo capacity of around 19t.
Support for the programme now stands at five nations, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Portugal, and its potential orderbook is 54 aircraft.
The Czech air force's current transport inventory comprises five Antonov An-26s and eight Let L-410s, as listed by Flightglobal's MiliCAS database. The service has also recently taken delivery of its first of four C-295s from Airbus Military. _________________ | |
