Helicopters leave for exercise Jebel Sahara
Four RAF helicopters left Gibraltar for Morocco on Monday morning at the start of Exercise Jebel Sahara.
Two Chinooks from 18 Squadron and two Merlins from 78 Squadron carried the Royal Gibraltar Regiment’s weapons – plus a supply of blood in case of any emergencies during the exercise! In addition to the RAF engineering and ground crews, Major Andrew Bonfante and three other RG soldiers flew in one of the Chinooks.
The four helicopters (and another which will join the exercise later) are part of Joint Helicopter Command. They use Exercise Jebel Sahara as ideal training as both squadrons are shortly to deploy to operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. ‘The Atlas Mountains provide us with ideal ‘hot and high’ flying conditions,’ said Squadron Leader Dave Morris, the Merlin detachment commander.
The Regiment’s advance party left for Morocco last Friday with the main body leaving on Wednesday on this week. The exercise lasts until the end of the month.

- Joint Helicopter Force join Gibraltar Regiment for Moroccan exercise
A Training and Adventure news article 24 Oct 08
Joining the Royal Gibraltar Regiment's annual exercise in southern Morocco this year, Exercise Jebel Sahara, were members of Morocco's 2nd Brigade Infanterie Parachutiste as well as the UK's Joint Helicopter Force.
The exercise is as important to the Joint Helicopter Force (JHF) as it is to the soldiers of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment:
"For us this has been an immense success," said the JHF commander, Wing Commander 'Jock' Brown. "Twenty-one crews are now trained up and ready for operations in this kind of mountainous area - a form of training I could not provide anywhere else.
"Here, my crews can fly from the Sahara Desert to snow-covered mountains in just a few hours. I cannot stress enough just how much we need to carry out this form of training. We will always support this exercise."
Sergeant Major Ian Martinez explained the structure of the exercise:
"As soon as the regiment arrived in Morocco it moved into a hostage rescue mission. Five platoons, three from the RG [Royal Gibraltar Regiment] and two Moroccan platoons, spent three days planning and executing a mission to rescue nine imaginary hostages.
"Then the middle phase of the exercise involved three packages, each lasting for four days," added Sgt Maj Martinez. "The packages were basic skills training to bring everyone up to standard and a 'live' firing phase. Following that, the next phase was the highlight of the whole exercise for many soldiers."
Lieutenant Dayan Pozo explained further:
"This third phase was called 'Wandering Vulture'. Each RG platoon of 25 men was to complete a Land Rover expedition - partly in the Atlas Mountains and partly in the Western Sahara.
"We were not given a precise route but we had to pass through two checkpoints 300 kilometres apart before returning to camp four days later. As you can imagine in Morocco, we hadn't planned for heavy rain or for the swollen streams they caused!
"But it was outstanding fun to overnight in the middle of the desert, cooking our rations over a camp fire. It was great fun driving the Land Rovers through fast-flowing streams and over huge sand dunes - and, yes, we did get stuck a few times."
"All the lads in my platoon enjoyed it completely," added Lance Corporal Gavin Lane.
His Excellency the Governor of Gibraltar, Lieutenant General Sir Robert Fulton KBE, was impressed with the whole exercise:
"The regiment knows this area very well and they know the local people very well. This exercise is as much about learning how to co-operate with the Armed Forces of another country as it is about brushing up a soldier's basic skills.
"This terrain is very typical of the terrain in which our soldiers may have to operate and so it is very realistic operational training for those who may deploy in support of UK forces.
"Add to that the benefit of having the support of the RAF's helicopters then the whole package is absolutely priceless."
The Regimental Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class 1 'Fitz' Fitzgerald, summed it all up:
"The balance of this exercise has been just perfect. It's been a mixture of brushing up our skills, putting them into practice - and having some adventure!"
Exercise Jebel Sahara culminates with the 'Sahara Patrol' competition in which each section of ten men will cover 55 kilometres on foot in under three days. Along the way the sections will be faced with fourteen obstacles where they will be tested on their knowledge of first-aid, survival skills, Prisoner-of-War handling, etc.
Only when the competition is complete will the Quartermaster, Major Eddie Asquez, and his team start to pack away the weapons, ammunition, unused rations, tents, medical stores, kitchens - and everything else the regiment needed to live outdoors for four weeks.
The soldiers will then load their equipment on to the regiment's trucks and board their own vehicles and a convoy of 35 vehicles will set off on its seven hour drive to Tangiers and the ferry back to Gibraltar. Another 'priceless' Exercise Jebel Sahara over for another year. http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceNews/TrainingAndAdventure/JointHelicopterForceJoinGibraltarRegimentForMoroccanExercise.htm | |

- Mission to Morocco for RAF helicopter crews
8:50am Sunday 9th November 2008
By Chris Gregory »
Chinook crews in training in Morocco
CREWS from RAF Odiham have returned from a training exercise in Morocco.
Chinooks from 18 (B) and 27 Squadron accompanied the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and Merlin helicopters from RAF Benson, in Oxfordshire, to Ramram Training Area, near Marrakech.
A total of 21 crews flew the aircraft in conditions which ranged from the heat of the Sahara Desert to the cold of snow-covered mountains.
The personnel also trained with the 2me Battalion Infanterie Parachutisme, from the Moroccan Army, on the mission, called Exercise Jebel Sahara.
Chinook crews are also set to travel to Norway in February next year, for a winter and mountain flying training exercise, and more exercises are planned in the Mediterranean and Kenya.
Group Captain Andy Turner, station commander, said: “People see the Chinook as being synonymous with Afghanistan, and it is true that the majority of our work is based there.
“But being an expeditionary force, we need to ensure that we are ready for anything, anytime, anywhere, for anyone.”
He added: “Global readiness training in places like Morocco, and moving into Norway in 2009, means that when we get the call through to help support an evaluation or a relief effort, my crews can move quickly and professionally and achieve more with less.” http://www.thisishampshire.net/news/hampshirenews/3829599.Mission_to_Morocco_for_RAF_helicopter_crews/ |
