Airbus completes qualification of Mirage 2000 and F-16 for UAE in flight refuelling
Posted 26 March 2012 · Add Comment
Airbus Military has successfully completed receiver qualification of the two primary aircraft-types that the UAE Air Force will refuel from the three A330 MRTT multi role tanker transports that it currently has on order.
In an extensive series of flight tests in Abu Dhabi, the compatibility of the new generation A330 MRTT with UAE Air Force Mirage 2000 and F-16 Block 60 fighters was fully demonstrated. Operating from Al Dhafra airbase, the aircraft performed air-to-air refuelling at speeds throughout the refuelling flight envelope, at a range of altitudes, and in turns, climbs and descents as well as level flight. Other versions of the F-16 have already been qualified with the A330 MRTT, but the trials added the Block 60 variant used by the UAE which features large conformal fuel tanks on the fuselage. The F-16 was refuelled using the A330 MRTT’s Airbus Refuelling Boom System (ARBS). The Mirage 2000 was successfully tested in different configurations including the twin-seat version carrying two drop-tanks and two air-to-air missiles, and the single-seat version carrying six missiles and a centreline drop-tank. To refuel the Mirage 2000, the A330 MRTT used its two underwing refuelling pods, including demonstrations of refuelling two fighters simultaneously. Antonio Caramazana, Vice President Programme Director Airbus Military Derivatives, said: “It is very satisfying to qualify another two aircraft types as receivers for the A330 MRTT and we look forward to entry into service with the UAE Air Force later this year.” Crew training with UAE pilots is currently underway in Spain and the first two A330 MRTTs for the UAE, including the one that took part in the trials, are due to be delivered before the end of the year.

- Made In Arabia For Arabians
The UAE (United Arab Emirates) has ordered another 200 NIMR vehicles for its armed forces. The NIMR is produced by a UAE company with an assembly plant in Jordan. The NIMR is a hummer like vehicle designed to cope with the high heat, and abundant sand and dust found in the Middle East. The basic 4x4 NIMR weighs 4.4 tons, can carry 1.5 tons (or up to eight people), and be equipped with a remote control 12.7mm machine-gun turret. Top speed is 140 kilometers an hour on roads. This version costs about $82,000 each. There is a larger 6x6 version for carrying cargo. There is also an anti-aircraft version armed with four Mistral missiles ready-to-fire, and four more as reloads. An anti-tank version comes equipped with four Milan ATGM (anti-tank guided missiles) ready to fire, and four more as reloads. All NIMRs are equipped to take a variety of armor kits (providing different degrees of protection against bullets and explosions.) NIMR development began in the late 1990s, and production began in 2005. NIMR was designed with the help of Russian automotive company GAZ, which also helped set up the manufacturing operation and supplies some of the components. The UAE armed forces bought a thousand NIMR vehicles a year ago and have about 500 in service. The new Libyan armed forces have ordered 107 while Lebanon, Tunisia and Algeria are testing the vehicle. NIMR is part of an effort by oil-rich Arab countries to develop their economies, and not just be dependent on exporting oil and gas. http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htarm/articles/20120402.aspx |

- The first new production-standard Nimr vehicles are expected to roll off Nimr Automotive's United Arab Emirates (UAE) production line before the end of April.
The company – a subsidiary of Tawazun Holding – has orders for a total of 1,800 Nimr vehicles across all of its current configurations and is now growing the scope of the 4x4 and 6x6 vehicle family.
Two Nimr vehicles were built and shown for the first time at the IDEX defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi in early 2011. All 1,800 vehicles are on order for the UAE Armed Forces and the vehicle has also been evaluated by a number of export customers.
The Nimr family was initially manufactured in Jordan but now all research and development, engineering, quality assurance, production and marketing are undertaken in the UAE. The current production contracts are set to continue for at least three years, assuming no additional orders are received.
Nimr is being marketed in unarmoured and fully protected versions, with the former typically being in a four-door, four-seat configuration with a cargo area at the rear. This has a typical gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 9 tonnes, of which up to 3 tonnes is cargo. This is also available in a fully enclosed station-wagon version with the crew compartment extending to the rear. A typical payload is up to two tonnes. http://www.janes.com/products/janes/defence-security-report.aspx?ID=1065966694&channel=defence

4 C-17 airlifters delivered to UAE in 2011; 6th scheduled for delivery in 2012
16:04 GMT, May 22, 2012 LONG BEACH, Calif. | Boeing delivered a fifth C-17 Globemaster III airlifter to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Air Force and Air Defence earlier this month. The UAE accepted delivery of four C-17s in 2011 and has one more airlifter on order for delivery later this year.
"It's amazing to see all that the UAE has accomplished with its fleet of C-17s in such a short time, including standing up a new base; qualifying three aircraft commanders and four mission-ready loadmasters; and conducting humanitarian aid and peacekeeping missions," said Bob Ciesla, Boeing Airlift vice president and C-17 program manager. "We're proud to be a part of the UAE Air Force and Air Defence mission long after each C-17 is delivered. With a mission-capable rate above 90 percent, UAE C-17s are ready to save lives and deliver hope whenever they are needed."
The UAE, Boeing's sixth international C-17 customer, received its first airlifter on May 10, 2011. Since that time, the UAE Air Force and Air Defence C-17 fleet has amassed more than 2,000 flight hours and carried more than 3,000 passengers and nearly 4 million pounds of cargo.
As a part of the worldwide C-17 "virtual fleet," UAE C-17s are supported through the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III Integrated Sustainment Program (GISP), a Performance-Based Logistics agreement. The GISP arrangement provides the highest airlift mission-capable rate at one of the lowest costs per flying hour.
Boeing has delivered 243 C-17s worldwide, including 216 to the U.S. Air Force active duty, Guard and Reserve units. A total of 27 C-17s have been delivered to Australia, Canada, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations. India has 10 C-17s on order for delivery in 2013 and 2014.

- Boeing delivered the sixth United Arab Emirates (UAE) C-17 Globemaster III
LONG BEACH, Calif., June 20, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] delivered the sixth United Arab Emirates (UAE) C-17 Globemaster III to the UAE Air Force and Air Defence earlier this month at the company's final assembly facility in Long Beach.
The delivery completes an agreement announced on Jan. 6, 2010, for six advanced airlifters to modernize the UAE's transport capabilities. Boeing delivered four C-17s to the UAE in 2011 and a fifth aircraft in May.
"After every delivery, UAE C-17s fly into action, conducting humanitarian airlift and disaster-response missions and life-saving aeromedical evacuation," said Bob Ciesla, Boeing vice president, Airlift, and C-17 program manager. "We're proud to deliver another C-17 that strengthens the UAE Air Force and Air Defence's range and ability to perform critical airlift missions around the globe."
The C-17 is the global airlifter of choice, delivering cargo in every worldwide operation for more than a decade. The C-17's ability to fly long distances and land in remote airfields in rough, land-locked regions make it a premier transporter for military, humanitarian and peacekeeping missions. With a full payload of 164,900 pounds, a C-17 can fly 2,400 nautical miles and land in 3,000 feet or less on a small unpaved or paved airfield, day or night.
As part of the C-17 Globemaster III Integrated Sustainment Program (GISP) Performance-Based Logistics agreement with the U.S. Air Force, Boeing provides after-delivery support to the UAE C-17 fleet. The GISP provides all C-17 customers an affordable sustainment solution that includes the C-17 "virtual fleet" arrangement where all participants benefit from the economies of scale found in purchasing materials for the entire worldwide fleet.
"Through innovative Performance-Based Logistics contracting and partnering with customers, we have provided tailored support solutions, maintaining the highest level of aircraft readiness while continuously reducing the cost of ownership," said Gus Urzua, vice president, C-17 GISP. boeing.mediaroom.com

- United Arab Emirates seeks to recruit 3000 Colombian soldiers
The United Arab Emirates is seeking to enlist 3,000 Colombian soldiers in the oil-rich Arab country's armed forces, weekly Semana reported Sunday. According to the weekly, 842 Colombian soldiers and retired soldiers have already joined the UAE army which is paying salaries up to ten times what the Colombian state pays the members of its armed forces.
The transfer of soldiers to the foreign army is causing unease among Colombia´s military commanders because the military fears the higher salaries abroad are draining the army of its best men and women.
"They have recruited soldiers with a lot of combat experience, valuable men with years of service in which the Army invested a lot in terms of training," an anonymous general told Semana.
"Without a doubt, this is a loss for the army, but there isn't much we can do because it is by no means illegal," the military official added. According to the weekly, the Colombians are making in between $2,800 and $18,000 in the UAE depending on the rank. In Colombia, a soldier earns $530 a month on average.
The New York Times reported in May 2011 that the UAE hired Colombian soldiers as mercenaries through a company led by Erik Prince, the founder of controversial private security company Blackwater.
According to a Colombian former colonel -- now in charge of recruiting compatriots for the UAE Army -- the 800 Colombians currently active in the Arab peninsula are not part of a mercenary army, but hired directly by the armed forces. "What is happening now is different than before. We are no mercenaries. The contract of the people who travel is directly with the government of the [United] Arab Emirates," the anonymous colonel said. The Colombian ex-official said the UAE are investing in their military defense because the government "noticed that several threats have made them vulnerable." According to the former colonel, the Colombians' responsibilities "range from urban defense against terrorist attacks to the control of civil uprisings and even be prepared for a possible border conflict with Iran." The United Arab Emirates is one of the few countries in the Middle East that has not been affected by the "Arab spring," a wave of revolutionary social unrest that forced four rulers in the region from power.
