New Zealand sells 22 NZLAV Light Armoured Vehicles to Chilean Marine Corps
Defense News April 2022 Global Security army industry
POSTED ON MONDAY, 25 APRIL 2022 15:46
The New Zealand Defence Force has finalised a sale of 22 surplus New Zealand Light Armoured Vehicles (NZLAVs) to the Chilean Navy for use by their Marine Corps. The sale is worth US $19.855 million and the vehicles will be shipped to Chile in two tranches: one this year and one in 2023. The sale to the Chilean Navy was brokered by Canadian Commercial Corporation, a Canadian Government organisation that supports international trade arrangements.

Commander Defence Logistics Command, Commodore Andrew Brown, said it was pleasing to get a sale negotiated for the vehicles. Eight more NZLAVs remain on the market to sell. The prospect of a sale to the Chilean Navy has been under consideration and negotiation for over two years, with a number of NZ and foreign government consents required before any sale could be finalised. Commodore Brown said the remaining NZLAVs, numbering 73, will continue in service with the NZ Army.
The NZDF bought 105 NZLAVs in 2003. One was written off after being badly damaged in Afghanistan and one is being used in Canada as a test vehicle. Analysis undertaken during the Defence Assessment process in 2008-09 concluded that the Army had more NZLAVs than necessary to fulfil government-directed outputs. In 2012 the Government determined that the number of NZLAVs be reduced and that 20 would be made available for a potential sale. The number for sale was later increased to 30 in 2019.
The Chief of Army, Major General John Boswell, said the sale still allows the Army to maintain a range of capabilities and offer a number of potential deployment options including domestic disaster response, regional security missions, and peacekeeping through to combat operations.
The New Zealand Light Armoured Vehicle (NZLAV) is a General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada (GDLS-C) Third-Generation Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV-III). The LAV III, originally named the Kodiak by the Canadian Army, is the third generation of the Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) family of infantry fighting vehicles built by General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada (GDLS-C), a London, Ontario, based subsidiary of General Dynamics. It is a license-built version of the Mowag Piranha IIIH. It first entered service in 1999, succeeding the LAV II. It is the primary mechanized infantry vehicle of both the Canadian Army and the New Zealand Army. It also forms the basis of the Stryker vehicle used by the U.S. Army and other operators.
The vehicle has a 19-21 metric tonne Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (depending on configuration) and is transportable by land, sea and air, including a C-130H airlift (at reduced weight). A mid-mounted turret carries the vehicle armament consisting of an M242 25mm cannon, co-axial and roof-mounted MAG-58 7.62mm machine guns, and two banks of 76mm grenade dischargers.

Chile plans to acquire four French-made ARQUUS Bastion 4x4 APC armored vehicles
Defense News July 2022 Global Security army industry
POSTED ON FRIDAY, 15 JULY 2022 11:16
According to information published by the Spanish Defense website "InfoDefensa" on July 14, 2022, the Undersecretary of the Interior of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security of Chile asked the Regional Government (Gore) of Biobío to finance the acquisition of four French-made ARQUUS Bastion 4x4 APC Armored Personnel Transport vehicles.
Ministry of the Interior and Public Security of Chile has requested a budget of $2.3 million to purchase four Bastion 4x4 APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) manufactured by the French company ARQUUS.
The purchase of these Bastion armored vehicles will be part of a reinforcement of the police forces of the Biobío region. The Region of the Biobío is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by Argentina, on the north by the Chilean Region of Ñuble, and on the south by the Chilean Region of Araucanía.
The Bastion is a 4x4 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) vehicle designed and developed by the French company ACMAT, which is now part of ARQUUS. The vehicle is based on the chassis of the VLRA TDN/TDE all-terrain multi-role wheeled tactical vehicle.
In APC configuration, the Bastion has a crew of two including a driver and commander, and can accommodate up to eight infantrymen seated at the rear of the hull. The vehicle offers ballistic protection against the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. It also integrates a V-shaped monocoque hull made of high hardness armored steel, which enhances the survivability of the vehicle and occupants by deflecting an upward aimed blast from a landmine or IED away from the vehicle.
The roof of the Bastion can be equipped with different types of weapon stations that can be armed with one machine gun up to 12.7mm caliber or 40mm automatic grenade launcher.
The Bastion APC is motorized with a 5.0L turbo diesel intercooler engine developing 215 hp at 2,300rpm coupled to either manual or automatic transmission. It can run at a maximum road speed of 110 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 1,000 km.

Aselsan Upgrades Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tank for Chilean Army
Defense News July 2023 Global Security army industry
POSTED ON MONDAY, 24 JULY 2023 12:47
On July 14, 2023, Aselsan, a Turkish defense company, was selected by Fábricas y Maestranzas del Ejército (Famae) as a strategic partner to modernize the fleet of Leopard 2A4 tanks for the Chilean Army.

The agreement is part of the Proaco project initiated by the Directorate of Army Projects and Research in 2018 to address technological and logistical obsolescence issues in the Leopard 2A4 tanks, Marder 1A3 armored vehicles, and self-propelled howitzers M109. Leveraging its expertise in modernizing various tank models, including the Leopard 1, Leopard 2, and M60 for the Turkish Army and the T-72A for the Kazakhstan Army, Aselsan will contribute its capabilities to upgrade the Chilean tanks.
According to the Military Balance of 2022, Chile is reported to have 173 Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles, 48 self-propelled howitzers M109, and finally 140 Leopard 2A4 tanks.
The Leopard 2A4 is in service with multiple countries worldwide, including Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, and, of course, Chile. Equipped with additional features such as infrared night vision systems and NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection, the tank enhances situational awareness and provides increased protection against chemical and biological threats on the battlefield.
At the core of the Leopard 2A4's firepower is its 120mm L55 smoothbore gun. It is complemented by a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and an anti-aircraft 7.62mm machine gun mounted on the top of the loader hatch, enabling the tank to counter various threats effectively.
To ensure crew protection, the Leopard 2A4 is equipped with standard spaced multilayer armor, with improved armor protection on the front turret and interior, fitted with spall liners. This configuration offers enhanced defense against enemy fire and explosives, ensuring improved crew safety.
With a range of 500 km and a maximum road speed of 72 km/h, the Leopard 2A4 is capable of carrying out long-range missions without frequent refueling, while maintaining high mobility. The tank's crew consists of four members: a tank commander, gunner, loader, and driver.
The dimensions of the Leopard 2A4 are notable, with a length of 7.70 m, width of 3.70 m, and height of 3.00 m. Its commanding presence on the battlefield contributes to its stability and maneuverability.
Aselsan's proposed technologies include electric drive systems for the turret and cannon, periscopes for the gunner and commander, vision systems for the driver, a combat management system (BMS), a laser warning system, an identification friend or foe (IFF) system, active protection technology, remote weapon system to counter asymmetric threats, and advanced armor.
The modernization of Leopard 2A4 tanks by Aselsan will provide the Chilean Army with state-of-the-art equipment, enhancing their operational capabilities on modern battlefields. This collaboration also showcases Aselsan's international defense expertise and capacity to deliver cutting-edge solutions for armed forces worldwide.
