The navy decided to bring its Canadair CL-215 twin-engined aircraft back into service to take part in a maritime exercise which began yesterday after engineers confirmed its air worthiness.
The navy obtained two of the planes in 1978, but grounded both more than 10 years ago because of a lack of spare parts.
The navy lacks the budget to buy the new version of the aircraft, the CL-415 (later renamed the Bombardier 415 Superscooper), which has a price tag of 10 billion baht.
Instead, the navy decided to keep one of its CL-215s flying and use the other for spare parts, navy chief Adm Surasak Rounroengrom said while observing the drill at the naval base in Chon Buri's Sattahip district.
The CL-215 is taking part in a two-month exercise as a search and rescue plane, he said.
The naval exercise this year involves more than 3,000 navy servicemen, and 15 warships led by HMTS Ang Thong.
NOTE: An earlier version of this story referred to the navy commander as an Air Chief Marshal, a rank reserved for the air force.

FMV deliver three Gripen aircraft to Thailand
One of three Gripen aircraft takes off from Sweden with destination Thailand. After a long delivery flight from Sweden, FMV has now delivered the seventh, eighth and ninth JAS 39 Gripen aircrafts to the Royal Thai Air Force. The entire order consists of twelve planes.
On behalf of the Defence Export Agency FMV has coordinated the delivery and Gunnar Lindberg, who is project manager at FMV Test and Evaluation site, summarizes some intense months.
- I have a long list of measures that we have checked off. Among others - test flights, technical issues and diplomatic contacts. And thanks to experienced staff and good cooperation with everyone involved, we were able to resolve all issues.
On 2 april three Gripen aircrafts started from FMV's facility outside Linköping. The last main point on Gunnar Lindberg's action list was underway. Gunnar himself sat in a Hercules aircraft along with technicians and aeronautical equipment.
FMV's test pilots Joakim Wengelin and Fredrik Süsskind had planned the delivery flight in eight stages. This required permission to fly over eight countries. It also required permission to both fly over and land temporarily in Hungary, Greece, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman and India and Thailand.
Facts:
Thailand has ordered two rounds of an integrated air defense system from the Swedish government through the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV. The first agreement was signed in 2008 included six JAS 39 C/D a Saab 340 AEW and a Saab 340 for transport and training. It contained, in addition to the equipment, a comprehensive logistic support, training for Thai pilots and technicians as well as simulators. Sweden also contributed with a support group in place in Thailand.
These first six JAS 39 Gripen C/D of twelve ordered fighters FMV delivered in February 2011.
The second agreement that FMV signed with Thailand in november 2010 include further six Gripen fighter aircraft of the C version, along with a Saab 340 with Erieye radar and the Swedish RB 15F missile system. Saab 340 plane and the missile system are already delivered. And today, FMV delivered three more Gripen aircraft. The remaining three fighter planes will be delivered after the summer of 2013.

S Korea to build Thai navy frigate
Published: 21 Apr 2013 at 00.00 Newspaper section: News
The Royal Thai Navy has chosen a South Korean naval ship manufacturer to build a new frigate that will cost about 13 billion baht.
An RTN selection committee announced on Friday it had chosen Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering to manufacture the frigate, a navy source said.
The company was one of the last two South Korean firms to enter the final round of the bid organised by the RTN panel.
The other three foreign firms ousted from the previous rounds were from Spain, Italy and China.
RTN chief of staff Chakchai Phucharoenyot, who chaired the panel, said Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering was selected because it had proposed specifications for the frigate that were in line with the navy's demands.
The navy also asked the company to manufacture a Combat Management System (CMS) which can be allied to the systems installed in the frigates HTMS Naresuan and HTMS Taksin, he said.
The frigate, which will be the first South Korean-manufactured navy ship in Thailand, is expected to be commissioned in two years' time, Adm Chakchai said.
The new frigate will have a displacement of between 3,000 and 4,000 tonnes.
The cabinet earlier approved the RTN's procurement of two frigates with a budget of 30 billion baht. The frigates will be considered for manufacturing one by one.
According to the navy source, the RTN preferred European frigates but they were too expensive.
Meanwhile, a Defence Ministry source revealed that Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat will lead military top brass on a visit to Russia between Tuesday and next Monday to bolster military ties.
Thai delegates will inspect the armaments industry in Russia, the source said.
