Colombia replaces T-41D

Interesting news from Colombia, the Fuerza Aerea Colombiana (FAC, Colombian Air Force) has ordered new basic training aircraft to replace the venerable Cessna T-41D Mescalero, which is already in service since October 1968.

About ten years ago, the T-90 Calima programme was launched to replace both the T-34 Mentor and T-41 with the slightly modernised version of the Lancair FG, dubbed T-90 Calima by the Colombian Air Force. As the T-34 was retired, the T-41D however was kept in use with the military aviation school (EMAVI) at Cali-MF Suarez.

Not unexpectedly, the T-90C Calima programme, foremost aimed at developing the national aviation industry further, saw some shortcomings, like its cabin height, which made it unsuitable to train Colombia's tallest young men and women. About ten T-41Ds remained in service all along.

Considering all options, ironically, the FAC has now chosen the Cessna’s latest 172-version to replace them, with deliveries starting in June 2021. The military aviation school (EMAVI, Escuela Militar de Aviación "Marco Fidel Suárez") at Cali-MF Suarez will be using the new Cessna 172 for basic training.

La Colombie opte pour le T-6C « Texan II » !



La Fuerza Aérea Colombiana (FAC, Force aérienne colombienne) a annoncé hier avoir sélectionné son nouvel avion formateur avancé avec le Beechcraft T-6C « Texan II ». Au total se sont 8 appareils qui seront commandés. L’avion était en compétition avec l’Embraer EMB Super Tucano et le KAI KT-1 coréen.

Le nouvel avion école doit venir remplacer le vénérable Cessna T-37 « Tweet » dont l’entrée en service date de 1978. Les Beechraft T-6C « Texan II » seront exploités par l'École d'aviation militaire Marco Fidel Suarez (EMAVI) "Marco Fidel Suarez" à Calí. Il est prévu que les T-6C Texan II démarreront leurs opérations en mars 2021.

Le T-6 « Texan II » :

Le Beechcraft T-6C « Texan II » est la version la plus moderne disponible de la gamme T-6, le cockpit comprend un Head-Up Display (HUD) couplé avec panneau de configuration Up-Front (UFCP), et Hands-On Throttle and Stick, soit le système mains sur manettes et manche. Le cockpit avec écrans EFIS intégrés à l'architecture ouverte, entièrement numérique et à la pointe de la technologie se compose de six écrans multifonctions à cristaux liquides interchangeables couleur 5 pouces x 7 pouces à matrice active. Il comprend également un système de commande de vol deux sièges éjectables Martin-Baker MkUS16LA 0/0 et un panneau de commande avant intégré (UFCP).

Le T-6C est un avion d'entraînement primaire et avancé qui permet un enseignement de base aux procédures de vol et aux instruments et permet d’effectuer les figures d’introduction à la voltige.

Le Beechcraft T-6 « Texan II » est un aéronef à turbopropulseur monomoteur construit par la Raytheon Aircraft Company (Beechcraft), basé sur une cellule de Pilatus PC-9.

Le T-6 est un développement du Pilatus PC-9, modifiés de manière significative par Beechcraft en vue d'entrer dans le système commun de formation primaire d'aéronef (JPATS) prévu pour les Forces aériennes américaines. Des modifications mineures ont été introduites sur la cellule d’un PC-9, mais des conflits entrer l’USAF et la Navy ont entraîné des retards et des augmentations de coûts (par rapport aux estimations initiales de 3,9 millions à près de 6 millions dollars par avion). De plus, le T-6 se retrouve avec un surpoids de 22% vis-à-vis du PC-9 initial.

Le ministre colombien de la Défense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, est décédé ce mardi du coronavirus dans un hôpital militaire de la capitale, Bogotá, où il a été admis le 13 janvier en raison de complications liées à la maladie.

Holmes Trujillo, 69 ans, a été admis dans une unité de soins intensifs en raison d'une pneumonie causée par le COVID-19. Le ministère de la Santé avait signalé quelques heures avant sa mort qu'il progressait favorablement, bien qu'il soit resté connecté à un respirateur.

Rare Colombian Air Force CN235

Participating in the current Red Flag Rescue 2021 exercise at Davis Monthan AFB (AZ) is this Fuerza Aérea Colombiana (FAC, Colombian Air Force) heavily modified ECN235, serial FAC1262 (construction number C-121), operated by Escuadrón de Combate Táctico 113 Fantasma based at Palanquero.

Ned Harris managed to take this photo of the ECN235 Lechuza, as the FAC has named to the Electronic Warfare variant, on 8 May 2021. The FAC is participating in this international exercise with the ECN235 and four Embraer A-29B Super Tucano light attack aircraft, serials FAC3115, FAC3116, FAC3123 and FAC3125, operated by Escuadrón de Combate 211 Grifos based at Apiay.

The training exercise will take place at Davis Monthan AFB from 7 to 21 May 2021. The Red Flag-Rescue exercise is the Department of Defense’s (DoD) premier Combat Search And Rescue exercise (CSAR). It provides realistic CSAR training in contested, degraded and operationally limited environments.

According to a Tweet Published by the Colombian Ministry of Defense on December 3, 2021, the Colombian army has received 20 M1117 Guardian from the United States. This is the first batch of the 145 vehicles that will be delivered in the first part of the year 2022.

The M1117 Commando 4x4 armored vehicle in service with the Colombian army under the name of "Pegaso". According to the SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) arms trade database, 28 M1117 ASV (Armored Security Vehicle), 4x4 armored vehicles were already delivered to Colombia in 2013/2014 and the second batch of 60 vehicles was delivered in 2016, including command post version.

Army Recognition has also reported that the Colombian army has a plan to upgrade the vehicle with a Belgian turret John Cockerill CSE 90LP armed with a 90mm cannon.

According to the Military Balance 2020, the Colombian army has a total of 38 M1117, 32 Stryker LAV III 8x8 armored vehicles, 28 Commando Advanced, 4 RG-31 Nyala, 56 EE-11 Urutu, and 121 EE-9 Cascavel 6x6 armored vehicles armed with a 90mm cannon.

The M1117 ASV (Armored Security Vehicle), also nicknamed Guardian was developed by the American company Textron Marine & Land Systems. The vehicle entered service with the U.S. Army in 1999.

Since the introduction of the ASV into the U.S. Army’s Military Police inventory, Textron has been receiving inquires and orders from domestic and international customers seeking a safe and reliable combat vehicle capable of various mission capabilities.

In response to demand, initially by the Iraqi Security Force, Textron has produced variants of the original ASV to meet specific customer missions. These variants include an Infantry Carrier Vehicle which has a crew of 2 and can accommodate 8 soldiers, a Command and Control vehicle that carries a 2 man crew and a battle team of 4, a recovery vehicle, and the M1200 Armored Knight for the Combat Observation and Lasing Teams. The Armored Knight is the ASV equipped with a sensor package used to locate and designate targets for in-direct fire and laser-guided weapons. Other variants are available for special mission requirements, including Reconnaissance Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA), Mortar Carrier, Ambulance, Countermine, or other customer-defined configurations.

The external modular expandable armor system of ceramic composite material provides ballistic protection for the crew, ammunition, fuel tanks, and storage areas against 12.7mm armor-piercing ammunition.

The M1117 is fitted with a non-stabilized one-man turret with can be armed with one 40mm automatic grenade launcher (MK19 MOD 3) and a .50-caliber machine gun (M2/M48).

The M1117 is motorized with a Cummins 6CTA8.3, 260 hp/828 lb-ft engine, coupled to a transmission Allison MD3560 with 6 forward and 1 reverse speed. It can run at a maximum road speed of 97 km/ with a maximum cruising range of 710 km.

Citing information from "OPEX360" at the beginning of the 2010s, the French company Nexter demonstrated its truck-mounted 155mm artillery system CAESAR on a firing range near Bogota, following a request from the Colombian army to enhance their artillery capabilities.

According to the military balance 2021, the Colombian army already uses the LG1 Mk III, a light 105mm towed howitzer also manufactured by the French company Nexter.

After the announcement this week of the purchase of CAESAR NG, the New Generation of the CAESAR 155m howitzers by Belgium, and the delivery of CAESAR to Ukraine as part of military aid from France, Colombia would become the tenth country to acquire the French-made CAESAR. Other countries such as Iraq and Malaysia could very soon take a decision on the purchase of the French 155mm wheeled howitzer.

Since CAESAR 155mm wheeled howitzer entered into service with the French army, this outstanding artillery system has become combat-proven during external combat operations in Afghanistan, Mali, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, the Sahel region, the Middle East, and East Asia.

The gun system of the CAESAR can be mounted on different truck chassis according to customer requirements, in fact, the CAESAR in 6x6 and 8x8 configurations are already in service with France and Europe, Middle-East, South, and East Asia. More than 300 CAESAR mobile artillery gun systems have already been produced to date

The 6x6 wheeled self-propelled howitzer CAESAR is armed with a 155 mm/52 caliber cannon mounted at the rear of the truck chassis. The gun of the CAESAR can fire a wide range of ammunition: among others, LU family (HE, Illuminating, Smoke and Practice) filled with insensitive or conventional explosives, the BONUS (Anti-Tank, smart), ERFB NR (Explosive Extended-Range Full-Bore), as well as the new KATANA 155mm, guided artillery ammunition. It has a firing range from 4.5 to 40 km and a high level of accuracy with the LU family. In direct firing mode, the maximum range is 2 km.

Ce ne sera pas du luxe de remplacer les Kfir qui ont connu de nombreux problèmes et un taux d'attrition assez important. Après dans l'absolu ça reste un bon avion et Israel propose une version encore améliorée, le Kfir NG, mais les Colombiens ont estimé que c'était un peu juste face aux Sukhoi Su-30 vénézuéliens. Sans compter que la cellule de base vieilli inexorablement. Pas mal de plans avaient été envisagé pour le remplacer, comme les Typhoon Tranche 3, des F-16 Block 70, des Gripen, etc. mais le F/A-50 me semble un bon choix. Polyvalent, assez économique, robuste, adapté pour l'appui-feu dont la Colombie a besoin face aux guérillas locales...

Concernant l'achat de CAESAR ça fait aussi suite à la nécessité de monter en puissance face au Vénézuela et de pallier l'obsolescence du matériel terrestre. On parlait aussi parfois d'achat de chars lourds (Merkava, Leclerc...), mais ça n'a jamais eu de suite.

Next batch of Cessna 172S for Colombian Air Force




The Colombian air force has taken delivery of a second batch of four Cessna 172S basic training aircraft. In March 2021, the first batch of four, with serials FAC2470 till FAC2473, were delivered.


The brand new Cessna 172S replace the venerable Cessna T-41D Mescalero, itself a Cessna 172 variant, a real tribute to a type which has been in production for over fifty years.



The new Cessna 172 will serve alongside the air force’s CIAC-built Lancair Legacy FG, locally known as T-90 Calima, in the basic training role with the Escuela Aviacion Militar (EMAVI, Military Aviation School) at Cali-MF Suarez.


Mid-July 2022, the second batch were flown from the United States to Colombia via Central America, with at least two aircraft stopping at Guatemala-La Aurora, where FAC2474 and FAC2476 were seen.






Meanwhile, the following Cessna 172Ss have been deregistered from the US Civil Aviation Register as exported to Colombia on 7/8 July 2022: c/n 172S12843 (ex N843AF), 172S12846 (ex N846AF), 172S12848 (ex N848AF), and 172S12850 (ex N850AF), which are likely filling the serial gaps.

According to information published by Infodefensa on July 29, 2022, the Colombian shipyard Cotecmar has carried out the christening and launching ceremony of the new light river support patrol vessel (PAF-L) Cristian Rangel Hernández of the Colombian Navy (ARC).

The construction of the vessel was carried out during the first semester of this year, in one of the shipyard's construction hangars, located in its facilities in the port of Cartagena de Indias.

The new PAF has a detailed series of improvements in its design (according to technical specifications ET-3240-B), among which stand out the relocation of the crew cabins, as well as a considerable increase in its storage capacity for supplies and cargo, also having a greater accommodation capacity for temporary passengers, additionally reducing the total weight, thanks to changes in several systems by technological innovation, thus achieving that the vessel can access to lower drafts.

Likewise, the engines have been changed for larger ones, but preserving the efficiency and power supplied, keeping its Scorpion fire control system that integrates two machine guns of the Browning M2HB type of 12.7x99 mm and other two of the US Ordnance M-60E4 type of 7.62x51 millimeters.

About the new Light Riverine Patrol Support vessel

The new PAF-L is an armored vessel with a length of 30 meters and a molded beam of seven meters, with a 3.1-meter depth at the first deck and a draft of one meter at maximum load.

It has 12 days of autonomy with a range of up to 1,560 kilometers at speeds of up to 17.7 kilometers per hour and the capacity for a crew of 43 officers, non-commissioned officers, sailors, and marines.

Damen to build five frigates for the Colombian Navy

According to information published by Infodefensa on September 27, 2022, the Colombian Ministry of Defense has announced that Damen will be the technological partner in the design and construction process, in collaboration with the local shipyard Cotecmar, of the five frigates of the Colombian Navy's Strategic Surface Platforms (PES) program.



The choice of the contractor for this long extended project comes months after the visit, last February, of the now former President Iván Duque to Damen's facilities in the Netherlands. This visit already suggested that the Dutch company would win the contract.

Colombia reaffirms with this decision its confidence in Damen and its vessels, since the Caribbean country also selected, in 2019, the OSRV 8316 model as the basis for its Colombian Oceanographic Vessel.

This way, the proposals of other companies that were interested in the Colombian naval program, among them, the French Naval Group, the Spanish Navantia, the Korean Daewoo and the Turkish STM, are ruled out.

The official signing of the contract will take place next week in Bogota. Cotecmar wants to be involved in the final design of the frigates for two reasons: to ensure that they meet the Navy's operational needs and to acquire technological capabilities.

The base design for the vessels will be Damen's Sigma 10514. Negotiations will now focus on agreeing on a price per unit not exceeding US$400,000,000. In addition, Colombia wants to increase the tonnage of the starting model to between 2,800 and 2,900 tons.

The intention of the Navy and the Cotecmar shipyard is to have a multi-mission platform, which can operate in any ocean, but particularly in the Atlantic and Pacific coast, and with which it can constitute an effective Oceanic Defensive Force (FDO) based on the Strategic Plan of the Defense and Security Sector (2018-2022) and the Strategic Military and Transformation Plan (PEMT) 2042.

According to ARC requirements, the new vessels would have an integrated mast, with a 76/62 millimeter main gun, with ship-launched sea-skimming surface-to-surface anti-ship cruise missiles (SSM-700K HAE SUNG-I), medium-range air defense systems

They will have a reduced crew, ranging from 4,000 to 7,000 nautical miles, with a range of approximately 30 days and speeds of 27 to 30 knots, provided by a twin-engine hybrid propulsion system.

Des négociations seraient actuellement menées pour acquérir 16 appareils pour un montant de l'ordre de 2,96 milliards d'euros (15 milliards de pesos) pour défendre son territoire, lutter contre le crime organisé et effectuer une surveillance aérienne. Ce que ne peuvent plus effectuer les Kfir. Si un accord devait être conclu, un premier lot composé de trois à cinq Rafale, pourrait être livré dès 2023
