Moscow has completed the delivery of 64 T-90S/SK main battle tanks (MBTs) to Vietnam, the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) confirmed to Jane's on 28 March.
A military-diplomatic source said "the multi-faceted contract" that was signed in 2016 for the MBT acquisition "has been fulfilled in accordance with the original schedule".
"All the financial issues under the contract have been resolved, and the Vietnamese tank crews and technical specialists have already been trained," the source added.
A representative of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) told Jane's that the MBTs were shipped in two large batches, each totalling "no fewer than 30 platforms".
"The first batch was delivered last December, while the second one arrived in Vietnam in late February," said the source, adding that the VPA received the MBTs equipped with Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armour and a turret-mounted missile countermeasures system.
"The vehicles will replace outdated Chinese Type 59 and non-upgraded Soviet-era T-54 tanks," he said, pointing out that the VPA has already begun operating the new vehicles.
In July 2017 Vietnamese state-run news agencies confirmed that Hanoi had ordered 64 T-90Ss, including an undisclosed number of T-90SK variants, pointing out that the acquisition would be funded by credit provided by Moscow.
The T-90S is the basic export model, while the 'K' is a reference to command versions.

Mini Pantsir-S1 Made in Vietnam
05 April 2019
Mobile low-range anti-aircraft missile complex built by Vietnam. (all photos : QPVN)
The Russian-made Pantsir-S1 gun-missile complex proved to be quite effective in Syria, while Vietnam also successfully built its own "mini Pantsir-S1".
Russian military expeditionary forces in Syria are equipped with very modern anti-aircraft weapons. Similarly, Syrian defense is not the same.
Both have in common that they own a gun complex - air defense missiles Pantsir-S1 is called "assassin" for all kinds of flying targets, especially small-sized airplanes, terrain-bound. such as cruise missiles, gliding bombs, mini unmanned aircraft, ...
Through the battle in Syria - the most fierce battlefield in the world since 2015, Pantsir-S1 has proven to be quite good combat performance.
Although there is still conflicting information that this low-range air defense complex is not as great as the advertisement, but the new, beautiful and smart "new, beautiful and smart" bombs, missiles from the US-France and Israel or the UAV. The Syrian rebel's small army was continuously defeated in large numbers, and it was Pantsir-S1 who made miraculous things.
Along with other types of anti-aircraft missiles such as Buk-M2, Kub, Pechora, Strela-10M, Pantsir-S1 has contributed greatly, helping to prevent Syria from breaking the massive attack of British-French-American in April. 2018 as well as successfully stopping Israel's sudden and clever attacks.
Along with Tor-M2, Pantsir-S1 safely protected Russian heads in Syria such as Khmeimim Air Base and Tartus naval base when shooting down almost all unmanned aircraft carrying explosives. Homemade attacks on these important maids.
Thanks to what has proven to be in Syria, Pantsir-S1 becomes one of the world's best-selling low-range air defense complexes.
Vietnam is a country with economic, scientific and technical potential, especially military science and technology is limited while always having to deal with the enemy's many, rich, armed Modern, smart in large quantities. Therefore, our combat motto is still an asymmetric warfare, mainly to prevent and fight back.
In the past years, with the attention of the Party and the State, under the direct direction of the Ministry of Defense, besides purchasing new and modern equipment from foreign countries, our defense industry In-depth investment has been made to manufacture relatively modern equipment, gradually mastering new technologies.
One of the most recent and proud achievements is that the Vietnam National Technology Association has applied new scientific and technological achievements to successfully manufacture a fast-moving, low-range anti-aircraft missile A-72. bridge of modern warfare, contributing to breaking the enemy's attacks both day and night.
The project was jointly deployed by Military PK-KQ and Military Science and Technology Institute. Accordingly, the combination of 4 shoulder-mounted A-72 missiles mounted on a launcher integrated with the optical optical observation system and central control system, helps the controller to fully control all operations. action war.
Observatory includes infrared thermal imaging camera, day light camera along with laser distance measurement system with integrated line-of-sight stabilization system that enables the system to work in the process of maneuvering and future operations , make sure to observe, catch and launch bullets to destroy targets in all weather conditions, regardless of day or night.
The rocket and optoelectronic equipment meet the requirements for automation and missile preparation and ensure high firepower performance incorporating target information from the self-guided missile and optoelectronic devices. meet the requirement of sticking and choose the low-shot target with a low flying target with accurate terrain.
Regarding the features of the A-72 missile, nothing has changed compared to the original design, it is still possible to carry the shoulder launcher normally, but when it comes to the vehicle, just change the preparation part. It is possible to release 4 consecutive fruits with a spacing of less than 15 seconds, increasing the ability to resist air raids.
Launchers with 4 missiles integrated with modern optoelectronic observatory (all photos : QPVN)
When conditions permit, we can fully integrate more modern missiles like Igla-S to further enhance the combat power of this complex.
Since this is a mobile air defense combination, they are highly capable of independent combat because the system has to wait to continuously receive information from other reconnaissance vehicles on the air situation. With this success will pave the way for the development of more modern "Made in Vietnam" mobile air defense systems.
However, in order to achieve the sophistication, precision and efficiency as a combination of Russian-made Pantsir-S1, Vietnamese scientists will have to strive and need more time. However, if we do not start from today, we will be forever behind the world.
Therefore, we have the right to be proud of the "mini Pantsir-S1 Made in Vietnam" product.
Vietnam Air Force is a priority investment force that goes straight to modernity with Navy and Communication.
With the policy of bringing the Vietnam Air Force straight to the modern, the military has been prioritized to invest in purchasing three regiments of Su-30MK2 multi-purpose to replace the outdated MiG-21.
However, in our combat duty, there are still quite a lot of Su-22 attacks, the life of these aircraft is also quite high and the inferior features of modern fighters are pretty much, so it is very soon needed to replaced.
The generation 4.5 fighter candidates may be ordered by Vietnam to extend the strategy of modernizing the air force, according to foreign media, including Western light fighter types. such as JAS 39 Gripen or F-16 Fighting Falcon, but the brightest is the Su-30SME and especially the Su-35S.
Even so, the statement took place a while ago, when Russia did not show any signs that it would soon export overseas Su-57 5th fighter, causing the Su-30SM and Su-35S to return into the most viable option.
But recently when Russian President Vladimir Putin officially approved the proposal to build a commercial version of the stealth 5-Su-57 fighter with the Su-57E designation, everything became very different.
VPAF operates Su-30MK2 in 3 regiments number 923 (Bai Thuong), 935 (Bien Hoa), 927 (Kep). Operates Su-27 in 1 regiment number 925 (Phu Cat). Operates Su-22M/UM in 4 regiments number 929 (Da Nang), 921 (Hanoi), 937 (Phan Rang), 931 (Yen Bai). Operates L-39C in 1 regiment number 910 (Dong Tac) (photo : reddit)
Although the Su-57E fighter is not yet complete, but it is placed next to the Su-35S, it still proved to be completely superior. In the opinion of many military experts, while there is no standard engine of the 5th generation, the Su-57 still deserves to be classified as 4.75 life fighter, which is higher than the Su-35S of category 4 5.
Back in the case of Vietnam, when it was determined to invest in the air to advance straight to modernity, the fact that we went straight to Su-57E and ignored the transition step of Su-35S was a perfectly balanced plan. prompt to deploy.
If ordering Su-35S, in the short term Vietnam will still have to import additional Su-57E, while choosing to buy Su-57E at this time, we will omit the transfer phase continue on.
The Su-57E purchase at the present time, Vietnam also received Russian support in technical testing work and will likely be accompanied by Izdeliye 30 engine upgrade package when this product is complete for them. We get a complete 5th generation fighter.
In the end, the cost of the Su-57E and Su-35S fighter jets was remarkably not differentiated, which could also be considered another important reason for Vietnam's decision.

The Future of the Vietnamese Defense Industry to 2024: Defense Budget is Projected to Register a CAGR of 9.43% Over 2020-2024, to Reach $7.9 Billion by 2024
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Future of the Vietnamese Defense Industry - Market Attractiveness, Competitive Landscape and Forecasts to 2024" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.
Vietnamese defense budget is projected to register a CAGR of 9.43% over 2020-2024, to reach US$7.9 billion by 2024.
This report provides readers with detailed analysis of both historic and forecast defense industry values, factors influencing demand, the challenges faced by industry participants, analysis of industry leading companies and key news.
China's increased naval presence and territorial claims in the disputed waters of South China Sea are the major factors compelling the Vietnamese government to increase its military capabilities. The Vietnamese Government allocated US$5.1 billion towards military expenditure in 2019, of which 32.5% is earmarked for the procurement of defense equipment. The country's defense expenditure increased at a CAGR of 7.34% over 2015-2019.
The country's military modernization efforts are focused on preventing China from taking hold of disputed territory in the South China Sea. Over the forecast period, the country is expected to procure fighter and multi-role aircraft, armored vehicles, naval vessels, patrol ships, maritime patrol aircraft, and surveillance equipment. The country's defense expenditure is projected to increase from US$5.5 billion in 2020 to US$7.9 billion by 2024, increasing at a CAGR of 9.43%.
Between 2015 and 2019, Vietnam cumulatively spent US$7.2 billion on defense equipment, while US$15 billion was assigned for revenue expenditure. Over the forecast period, Vietnam's capital expenditure is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.43% and revenue expenditure is expected to register growth of 9.44%. Vietnam's slow population growth is projected to increase per capita defense expenditure from US$53.7 in 2019 to US$79.3 by 2024.
Vietnamese homeland security expenditure, on a cumulative basis, is expected to be US$20.9 billion over the forecast period compared to US$12.7 billion spent between 2015 and 2019. Efforts to protect its maritime boundaries, coupled with the need to counter human trafficking and the illicit drug trade are anticipated to drive homeland security expenditure during the forecast period.
The lack of technology and low domestic defense capability has forced the country to import weapon systems from foreign OEMs in order to fulfill its military requirements. Over 2014 to 2018, Russia emerged as the largest supplier of military hardware to Vietnam with a share of over 77.9% of Vietnam's imports, followed by Israel, Belarus, South Korea and Ukraine accounting for 9%, 4.1%, 2.8% and 2% respectively. Vietnam prefers government-to-government deals when procuring defense equipment; therefore, improving government-to-government relationships are expected to open up business opportunities over the forecast period.

A three-coordinate radar detector for the detection of aerial objects of the 55.5 km² range Niebo-UE in Vietnam (photo: QPVN)
The Vietnamese television QPVN in a reportage about military news showed a three-coordinate sky-radar transmitter, Niebo-UE (Niebo means Sky), a meter band, used by the army of this country. Earlier, there was no information on the sale of radars of this type to Vietnam. It is known that the Niebo-SWU radar has previously bought by Iran.
A three-coordinate radar detector for the detection of a 55.56-meter-wide Niebo-UE object was designed by Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Radio Engineering. It can detect and identify flying objects of various categories, including stealth classes, also under radio interference conditions. Niebo-UE can operate in automatic mode, autonomously or in an air defense system. It can also control civilian air traffic.

Vietnamese T-90 Tanks are Updated by Russia with New Armor Piercing Bullets
27 Juni 2019
Advanced tank shells will be introduced by Russia at the Army 2019 Military Exhibition (photo : Rostec)
According to sources from Rostec Group, at the 2019 Army Military Forum, Tekhmash will introduce piercing bullets under Svinets-2 and Mango-M sizes to customers. The bullets under the size 3BM-42 Mango fired a 125 mm smooth tanker gun officially into the Soviet Army staff since 1986 and remained the main energy-penetrating projectile of the Russian Army and many other countries current time.
Structure of piercing bullet 3BM-42 Mango consists of 2 cores (bar piercing) made from high-strength tungsten alloy with serial structure, integrated with ballistic cap and special vibration reduction mechanism to limit impact Destroy the bullet structure too soon before it hits the target. The barrel tip of Mango 3BM-42 bullets reaches 1,700 m / s, it penetrates 500 mm of homogeneous steel (RHA) after explosive reaction armor (ERA) when fired from a distance of 2,000 m at a contact angle of 0 degrees.
According to calculations when shot from a distance of 2,000 m, at the target collision, the speed of the 3BM-42 Mango bullet is about 1,000 m / s. With a bar length of 570 mm, it will take more than 1 / 2,000 seconds to pass through the outer surface of the reactive armor, too short to detonate the block and knock the rod through.
However, due to the long-established birth of Mango 3BM-42 bullets, it was judged to be somewhat backward, it would be significantly reduced if it encountered the advanced reactive 3rd generation explosive reactors such as Nozh's. Ukraine or Relikt made by Russia.
Vietnamese T-90 tank (photo : IndoPacificSCS)
Before this situation, Tekhmash will officially introduce bullets under size 3BM-44-1 Mango-M at the 2019 Army Exhibition this year, this is the modernized version of 3BM-42 Mango bullets, the ability to penetrate armor Rostec announced a 20% increase.
The 3BM-44-1 Mango-M dynamic ballistic bullet is suitable for all types of integrated automatic reloaders on the old T-90 and T-72 main battle tanks, no need to edit any What details of the load mechanism.
There is a noticeable detail on the newly-produced T-90S / SK or T-90MS and T-90M tanks equipped with a new generation loader, which allows the loading of high-power ballistic bullets with bars For a longer time, to take advantage of this advantage, Russia produced a caliber bullet named Svinets.
This is an advanced bullet with a length of 740 mm and an initial velocity of 1,850 m / s, its kinetic energy is much larger than Mango, able to defeat the most heavily protected tanks.
Two versions of the trans-Svinets include the use of poor uranium cores 3BM-60 Svinets-2 and tungsten carbide core bullets 3BM-59 Svinets-1.
Test results showed that at a distance of 2,000 m and 60 degree angle, 3BM-42 Mango bullets penetrated 230 mm, this figure at 3BM-44-1 Mango-M was 280 mm, while 3BM-60 Svinets-2 up to 300 mm.
New types of new generation kinetic energy bullets to be released under evaluation will help Russian tanks maintain superiority in modern battlefields.
The Vietnamese-built VUA-SC-3G recently made headlines after three were obtained by the Vietnamese Border Defense Force.
It was created by Vietnam's Viettel Military Industry and Telecommunications Group. This drone is designed for activities such as tracking targets in remote areas, mapping surveys from above, traffic monitoring, and search/rescue missions.
Border Defense Generals claim that the VUA-SC-3G has over 400 confirmed flight hours while supporting various Vietnamese military exercises. Although the specifications of VUA-SC-3G have not been announced yet, it has many similarities with another reconnaissance UAV model as well - the Viettel VT-Pigeon drone, also shown in this album.
Both the VU-SC-3G and VT-Pigeon have the same main body design, with the main propeller engine placed at the rear of the aircraft, and using the same design for the landing gear system. landing. The overall size and wingspan of these two UAV models are not too different.
From the above characteristics, we can predict the basic parameters of VUA-SC-3G based on the published information of VT-Pigeon, as well as the technical features of this UAV model in defense applications.
Based on the size and engine system that VUA-SC-3G is equipped with, it has a range of about 50km with an aerial flight time of more than 3 hours, an average flying speed of about 80 - 130km/h. With small UAV models such as VUA-SC-3G, its maximum elevation can be up to 3,000m.
Able to carry out patrolling and monitoring of border areas, the VUA-SC-3G is equipped with optical surveillance camera (EO Sensor) and thermal imaging camera (IR Sensor), capable of scouting both day and night as well as transmitting high-resolution image data to the command center.

Vietnam Conducts T-54M3 Firing Test
02 Juli 2019
T-54M3 main battle tank (all photos : QPVN)
Those watching last night's (6/26/19) newscast from Vietnamese National Defense Television (QPVN) were treated to a special sight - the T-54M3 in action as it conducted maneuvers and weapons firing demonstrations.
After years of nothing but images from inside the factory the project was being worked on, changes to the tank due to project cancellations, and funding issues, Vietnam's new T-54M3 was finally seen in action as it was being used to train Vietnamese armored crews in preparation for the ARMY games Russia is hosting this year.
This is the first time that the Vietnamese public has seen the T-54M3 in action aside from an old QPVN clip regarding the original tank prototype and photos from within the factory where the tanks are being created at.
The T-54M3 is Vietnam's modernization of the T-54/55 tanks that have long been the workhorses of the People's Army of Vietnam.
Clearly shown upgrades are the addition of composite armor and explosive reactive armor lining around the original T-54/55 turret and the front.
There are no detailed technical specifications though it is known that various internal systems have also been upgraded by the Viettel Military Industry and Telecommunications Group.
Visible above the main gun at the top of the turret are meteorological sensors and a telescope sight with possible IR channel. The original 100mm gun was kept - the M68 105mm cannon on the original T-54M3 prototype was never mass manufactured due to expenses.

A Large Number of Vietnamese T-90 Tanks are on Duty
19 September 2019
T-90S/SK main battle tank of the Vietnamese Army (photo : Vietnamse Army)
At present, the Army has received 64 T-90S/SK main battle tanks and they are now part of the active combat component.
The main battle tank T-90S/SK is considered to be the strongest steel fist of the tanks - the Vietnam People's Army's armor in the early 21st century, our MBT number is 64 According to the contract signed in 2016.
Russia completed the full handover by mid-2019, about 6 months earlier than originally expected, the delivery process was divided into two phases and took place relatively neatly as well as ensuring security. Absolutely safe for vehicles.
Recently, the first photos of Vietnam T-90 tanks appeared in the combat component of the unit, accompanied by photos of training activities as well as some types of bullets. Specialized equipment for vehicles.
On the military pages, there are pictures of works to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the traditional day of the Tank - Armored Soldier made by the 201 Tank Brigade Base Division.
In this picture it is easy to recognize that the T-90 tank is being removed from a specialized tractor, which is evidence that part of the T-90 is part of the 201 Brigade squad
The aforementioned work was identified as the area used as a gathering place for T-90 tanks. Going inside, we can see that each row of this warehouse has a capacity of about 30 vehicle, equivalent to a battalion.
In addition to about half of the total 64 T-90s being delivered to the 201 Tank Brigade to operate, the rest belongs to which units will probably be announced in the near future.
After 64 T-90S/SKs in the first round of procurement, many international military information sites said that Vietnam could proceed to order the next batches to bring the T-90 squad size to about 200. One, including the T-90MS variant.

Su-27 Flanker fighters of the Vietnam Air Force have been partly transferred to Belarus to accelerate the overhaul process and increase the shelf life.
At present, A42 Factory - Department of Technology - Air Defense - Air Force is the unit responsible for overhauling and overhauling the Su-27SK/UBK Flanker heavy air superiority fighter for the Vietnam People's Air Force Male.
According to the announcement, the unit has completely owned the line of expiry date for Su-27 thanks to technical support from experts from Ukraine. In addition, the factory has performed a partial repair phase for the versatile Su-30MK2 fighter.
However, due to the urgent demand of the operators to quickly bring all Su-27s back to the squad, the capacity of A42 Plant was difficult to meet in a short time, so it was Some Su-27s have been transferred to the Aircraft Repairing Plant No. 558 in Baranovichi, Belarus to carry out the work.
Recently the image of Su-27UBK (2-seat version) fighter of the Vietnam Air Force completed overhaul, overhaul in Belarus and test flight was posted, the aircraft was painted. The new model is very similar to the ones that have a shelf life at Factory A42.

The completion progress of Plant 558 is clearly much faster than Plant A42, which is no surprise because your team of experts has more experience as well as higher level of technical equipment. .
But the problem that attracted attention is that the Aircraft Repair Factory No. 558 is also a unit specializing in upgrading Su-27SK/UBK fighters to Su-27SKM/UBM. When Vietnam has sent its aircraft thousands of miles far to Belarus, it is not excluded that it is upgraded, not just overhauled in the middle of its life cycle.
The Su-27SKM is an export version of the Su-27SM single-seat fighter, officially launched at China Air Show 2004. The Su-27SKM includes cockpit upgrades with Modern LCD display screen, electronic warfare protection system using sophisticated digital technology and additional aerial refueling function.
The Su-27SKM has replaced the original N001 single-target hunting radar with the N001 VEP multipurpose radar, enabling the aircraft to carry advanced aviation weapons including RVV-AE air-to-air missiles; Kh-29T/TE/L, Kh-31A/P surface-to-air missiles and KAB-500KR/1500KR smart bombs. The fuselage frame and engine were also overhauled to allow another 15-20 years.
Su-27SK after upgrading to Su-27SKM standard is assessed to have combat features equivalent to Su-30MK2, while Su-27UBM is the Su-27UBK version upgraded to Su-27SKM, two machines There is no difference in combat capability.

Vietnam’s T-54M Battle Tank Modernization Program
08 November 2019
T-54M of the Vietnamese Army (photos : VTV1, QPVN)
The program was essentially divided into a three phases:
Phase 1: Israel Military Industries (IMI) modernizes a single Vietnamese tank
Phase 2: Factory Z153 modernizes three tanks under the supervision of IMI
Phase 3: Factory Z153 begins independently modernizing tanks on their own using components imported from IMI. The finalized amount of modernized tanks along with field acceptance tests marks the end of this phase.
There were some minor setbacks regarding the production amount of tanks, but it isn’t a huge problem. The modernization program works to enhance firepower, improve maneuverability, protection, and communication systems on the T-54B. As detailed below:
- The T-54’s D-10T 100mm cannon was fitted with heat insulating casing, minimizing stress to the barrel of the cannon when firing, and increasing the accuracy and precision up to 1.7-2.2 times.
- New ammunition types were introduced, the amount of ammunition in the tank was increased by 4 rounds, a fire control system w/ a viewfinder utilizing day & night non-cooling thermal imagery was installed along with laser and built-in rangefinders. Sensors were also installed.
- A digital ballistic computer combined with an in-vehicle stabilization system and new fire control system improves firing accuracy and can use multipurpose explosive and kinetic rounds. The firing range is also increased, bettering the tank’s ability to eliminate hostile targets.
- Modifications were made to adjust the engine power, a hydraulic control system for steering, brake, and clutch mechanism was installed, a new dim light amplifier was added
- The Russian RF2050 MultiBand Mobile Transceiver was replaced with a system capable of anti electronic warfare measures such as frequency hopping, digital encryption, & electronic protection. This new system improves the communication security of transmissions, increases the range of communications, and utilizes an MDIS (mobile data intermediate system).

Images of KamAZ 65224 and Kamaz 43119 military transport trucks recently handed over to Vietnam by Russia have appeared on military pages.
Kamaz is one of the largest truck manufacturers in the world, their military (and civilian) trucks have been present in many wars, conflicts and proven reliability and performance, endurance and great strength.
Not only supplying the Russian Army, Kamaz is also present throughout the world, in which Vietnam is a familiar market from the Soviet era. Recently we have decided to import a series of 6x6 Kamaz 65224 and Kamaz 43119 trucks to equip transport units.
According to the Russian announcement, the Vietnamese version ordered was a military variant. However, the fact that the manufacturer is always ready to sell all the configurations to both civilian customers so the above classification is only relative.
The first is the Kamaz 65224 strategic truck model, this is the latest generation of Kamaz's active 6x6 three-wheeled military truck, with many outstanding features compared to its predecessors.

Kamaz 65224 is equipped with a powerful turbocharged diesel engine with a capacity of 360 horsepower, meeting Euro-2 emission standards, making it easy to cross all terrain when carrying a tonnage of up to 14 tons and only consuming about 30 liters of fuel/100 km, saving from 15-20% compared to other engines of the same type.
Vehicles equipped with a 16-speed gearbox (ZF 16S151), allowing operating at an altitude of 4,500 m above sea level, on any complex terrain. The price of Kamaz 65224 is estimated at 70,000 USD/car, quite high but worthy of their features.
While Kamaz 43119 is an active 3-wheel cross-country military transport vehicle (6x6 wheel structure) manufactured in Russia, it is classified as a military-grade military truck when it is less capable than Kamaz 65224. .
Kamaz 43119 uses Kamaz-740.30-260 engine with the largest capacity of 260 horsepower with maximum torque of 1,060 Nm at 2,000 rpm, giving the ability to overcome very strong terrain.
Both Kamaz 65224 and Kamaz 43119 military trucks have been introduced at the DSE 2019 Exhibition held in Hanoi recently, which is a positive signal for the post-manufacturer exhibition to bring many prototypes. more real.
