- Ghana inaugurates new patrol boats and surveillance aircraft
By Jeremy Binnie 10/25/2012 Ghanaian President John Mahama commissioned two new naval vessels and two maritime surveillance aircraft on 19 October, local media reported.
The president inaugurated three Diamond DA42 aircraft - two for surveillance and one for training - and two new hangars constructed by China's Poly Group at Takoradi Air Force Base.
He then made his way to nearby Sekondi Naval Base to commission GNS Naa Gbewaa and GNS Yaa Asantewaa , which are both former German Navy 58 m Albatros-class patrol boats that were refitted before delivery to Ghana earlier this year.
In his speech at Takoradi Air Force Base, Mahama emphasised the recent development of Ghana's armed forces and stressed the need to secure the country's waters against criminal activity.
"Over the last four years, we have undertaken perhaps the largest re-equipping of the armed forces in the history of Ghana," he said. "The navy has received seven new vessels, two of which we are going to commission today. The air force has received two strategic lift aircraft, two surveillance aircraft and one trainer aircraft. They have received two new hangars and are due to receive four new helicopters by the end of the year."

- PRESIDENT JOHN MAHAMA COMMISSIONS FOUR MI-171Sh TERMINATOR HELICOPTERS INTO GHANA AIR FORCE INVENTORY
Posted on January 7, 2013
GHANA NEWS AGENCY Saturday 5th January, 2013 Accra, Jan. 05 President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday commissioned four new MI-171 SH Helicopters with the assurance that government would provide all the logistics for the military to execute their domestic and international assignments. He also commissioned an ultra-modern logistics warehouse for maintenance and preservation of all the necessary equipment for the helicopters at the Ghana Air Force Base.
President Mahama said the arrival of the four helicopters formed part of government’s retooling exercise for the military to protect the territorial waters of Ghana and to play a leading peacekeeping role on the African continent and beyond.
The MI-171SH helicopter, which was manufactured by Rosoboronexporters of Russia, has a normal weight of 11,100 kilogrammes with a maximum of 13,000 kilogrammes, a main tank capacity of 610 kilometres with the main and external tank capacity of 1065 kilometres. The helicopter, when converted into a troop carrier version, can transport a maximum of 34 fully equipped soldiers and carry a total of 4000 kilogrammes weight when converted into a cargo version. As an ambulance, the MI 171 SH Helicopter can carry 12 cases on stretchers and transport 3,500 litres of water for fire fighting when fitted with a ‘bambi’ bucket.
President Mahama said the helicopter, which was capable of performing search and rescue operations at a hover whilst lifting weights of up to 300kilogrammes, was a multi-purpose armoured military helicopter that would engage the Air Force staff throughout the year. He said the arrival of the helicopters would also save government the embarrassment of having to hire private helicopters for presidential official assignments.
“I can assure you that the perennial resignation of the Air Force pilots to join private companies will also end as a result of these helicopters,” he said. Lieutenant General Joseph Henry Smith, Minister of Defence, said the helicopters had a package of training the staff of the Air Force and they would take advantage to provide more capacity building for them. He said the helicopters were fitted with exhaust that could suppress warfare measures and advised the staff to make maximum use of the facility.
Mr Vladmir V. Barbin, Russian Ambassador to Ghana, said Russia had over the years enjoyed good relations with Ghana and the current transaction would further strengthen their relationship with mutual respect and trust. http://beegeagle.wordpress.com/2013/01/07/president-john-mahama-commissions-four-mi-171sh-terminator-helicopters-into-ghana-air-force-inventory/ | |

- Ghana seeks more C295s for UN duty
Airbus Military is discussing the potential sale of additional C295 tactical transports to Ghana, with the type expected to be used in support of the UN’s African peacekeeping requirements.
Ghana has previously acquired two C925s for use by its air force, which Flightglobal’s MiliCAS databaserecords as having been delivered in 2011 and 2012.
Indications of a prospective deal with an undisclosed African customer emerged late last month when a C295 appeared on the ramp at Airbus Military’s San Pablo final assembly site in Seville, Spain, in a white colour scheme and carrying UN markings.
“We are in discussions with Ghana regarding the possible acquisition of C295s,” says the company, which stresses that a deal has yet to be finalised.
Operations with modern-day types such as the twin-turboprop C295 would provide UN missions in Africa with an alternative to using aged Antonov-series transports, which have been involved in numerous fatal accidents on the continent over the last several years.

| HQ 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades have become HQ Southern and Northern Commands respectively. All infantry battalions belong to the Ghana Regiment. There is confusion regarding the Airborne Battalion, the Special Forces Battalion, and 64th Regiment. It is likely only two of the three exist.
