- Air Force of Nigeria to unveil new unmanned ground vehicle used as bomb detector.
The Nigerian Air force has unveiled unmanned ground vehicle bomb detector and a Light Surveillance Aircraft developed by the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, north-west Nigeria. Commandant of the AFIT, Air Vice Marshal Toni Adokwe, introduced the device at a gathering ahead of the institute’s 44th Convocation Ceremony coming up on Friday, July 31, 2015
The Commandant demonstrated how the device could dictate and pick up Impoverished Explosive Device to safer locations for disposal.
The device has a frequency jammer to distort GSM signals and also has a time run of four hours.
He said it was produced by students of the Armament Engineering Department in 2012 and was later modified to a higher level called Unmanned Ground Vehicle type two.
Adokwe affirmed that with effective innovative approach to technology, Nigeria would be able to tackle the current security challenge in the North-east.
The Commandant further explained that the institute had equally commenced research into the development of a Light Surveillance Aircraft that would be in conformity with the climatic temperature of Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
Since inception, the AFIT has graduated about 5,000 persons, including personnel of the Nigerian Army, Air force, Navy and civilians, as well as foreign students from the Armed Forces of the Republic of Benin, Zimbabwe, Niger, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

- Made in Nigeria «Igirigi» Armoured personnel carriers
By Dylan Vosman - Aug 26, 2015
The Igirigi APC is the Nigerian Army’s locally manufactured armoured personnel carrier.
Designed and manufactured by the army Corps of Engineers, the APC was first introduced to the media during the 2012 Nigeria Army Day celebrations (NADCEL). While actual specs of the vehicle are still undisclosed, observers noted the remote control weapons station, and its IED deflecting V shaped hull.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said the local production of APC had saved the nation at least 30 per cent of the cost of the foreign version and that the unveiling of the APC was part of the ongoing reform in the military and in line with the transformation agenda of the Jonathan administration.
In 2013, during events to mark the 150th year anniversary of the Nigeria Army, A desert camouflaged Igirigi with a 20mm gun led the parade of vehicles drawn up from various formations in the country at the Armed Forces review, which took place at Abuja.
Now Igirigi APC stay in service of Guard Brigade of Nigerian Army.

WORLDSTAGE 7 October 2015
Nigerian Army said over 100 Boko Haram terrorists that made a futile attempt on 120 Task Force Battalion troops located at Goniri, Yobe State at the early hours of today were all killed.
A statement by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations said the fleeing terrorists had in a great sign of desperation and to create an impression that they remain relevant, at the early hours of today made a futile attempt on 120 Task Force Battalion troops located at Goniri, Yobe State.
“During the encounter our gallant troops successfully repelled the attacked and inflicted heavy casualty on the invading terrorists as all of them were killed. On the last count over 100 terrorists bodies were seen. Unfortunately however, 7 of our gallant soldiers paid the supreme price while defending our fatherland, while 1 officer and 8 soldiers were wounded in action,” the statement said.
“ During the encounter, the troops have recovered a sizeable (cache of) arms, ammunition and other equipment from the terrorists. These include 1 General Purpose Machine Gun, 2 Rocket Propelled Grenades, 9 AK-47 rifles and belted rounds of 7.62 (NATO) ammunition.
Others were various wires used for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), 7 primed IEDs, different types of spanners and a torchlight.”
The statement said troops had consolidated on the encounter and more determined to defend their location and continued to serve as blocking force to any fleeing terrorists from the Nigerian Air Force aerial bombardments and other troops artillery fire.
In a related development, troops of 21 Brigade on fighting patrol from Bama to Ngurosoye were said to have destroyed Boko Haram terrorists camps along that axis.
“While on patrol, the brave soldiers came across some of the terrorists hideouts that also served as fabricating area for IEDs and the terrorists’ training area. Another patrol along Bama-Kawuri axis discovered and exhumed IEDs and wires for detonation,” it said.
“It is important to reiterate that the Nigerian Army along with the support of the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies would not relent in its determined effort of defeating Boko Haram terrorists.”

- NIGERIA’S DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS WARNS PUBLIC TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR CLUSTER BOMBS
Posted on October 9, 2015 by beegeagle
Nigerian Army combat engineers engage in demining tasks to rid the roads of explosives, somewhere in northeast Nigeria WORLDSTAGE 8 October, 2015
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said Army Engineers serving in Adamawa State have recovered some catches of cluster bombs in the contested areas in recent time and advised people, particularly those in the North East to keep a lookout for them.
The military said the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) in the areas have used such lethal instruments over time to push their callous terrorist cause.
Colonel Rabe Abubakar, Acting Director Defence Information said for easy identification of cluster bombs, “it is important to note that cluster bombs are bombs that house submunitions, that is, smaller explosives contained in individual cases. These bombs are used against large areas containing many targets, such as columns of vehicles, marketplaces, places of worship or large troop concentration as the case may be.
”Some cluster bombs carry several hundred of very small explosives wrapped in a metal container like a pot while others carry larger submunitions that can find specific targets such as tanks. Some of these submunitions do not blow up immediately, but remain behind and act as landmines. This can be an acceptable explanation for the recovery of caches of these bombs by Nigerian Army Engineers in the area.
“The general public are hereby requested to be wary of such concealed dangerous equipment now being used by the terrorist elements to cause havoc to both innocent lives and property. The public is also advised to report such objects/materials if seen to security agencies for prompt action. The terrorists are desperate and frustrated and could use any cruel instrument to actualize their evil intention.
“Members of the public are hereby urged to continue to cooperate with the security agencies by giving timely information to secure our great country.”

- BOKO HARAM: UNITED KINGDOM OPTIMISING SUPPORT TO NIGERIA – BRITISH CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF
Posted on October 10, 2015 by beegeagle NEWS AGENCY OF NIGERIA 9 October, 2015 Abuja
The Chief of Defence Staff of the UK, Gen. (Sir) Nicholas Houghton, has pledged his country’s support to the Federal Government in its fight against terrorism.
Houghton told State House correspondents in Abuja on Thursday after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari that the United Kingdom was prepared to optimise the support it had offered the Nigerian government in the past. ·
“I am here representing my government in the United Kingdom because we share such an interesting security situation in Nigeria to make sure that whatever help the United Kingdom can give to the government of Nigeria particularly to President Buhari that we are making so that we are optimising what support we can give to him.
“Primarily my concern is in the security situation, particularly the one posed by Boko Haram. “I think the Nigerian armed forces have made some remarkable progress in the last two months in pushing Boko Haram back.
“But as it comes to the end of the rainy season,I know the President has got very strong ambitions to what he can achieve by Christmas.’’
The UK defence chief said that UK had been offering support to the Nigerian Armed Forces in the form of pre-deployment training, adding:“we are going to be optimising that support the best way we can“.
According to him, the threats posed by Boko Haram are no longer localised as they become regional and global.“We now recognise more than everbefore that many of the security threats that are posed are not just localised ones but they are regionalised ones and global ones.
“I think much of the conversation on security in the United Nations Assembly was about the threats posed by extremism and terrorism. “And we share within the United Kingdom and Europe concerns about the destabilising effect of ISIL in Iraq and Syria and North Africa but also the threat that Boko Haram poses here.
“Therefore, in many respects the security in places such as Nigeria, the security concerns here are shared by many within the global community, which is why I think we do need to intensify the help and support we offer.’’
The General said that his country was glad with the progress made by the Nigerian troops in curbing the excesses of the insurgents.

- AMNESTY OPENS NIGERIA OFFICE TO INVESTIGATE ABUSE CHARGES
Posted on October 14, 2015 by beegeagle
PM NEWS 14 October 2015
Amnesty International opened an office Tuesday in Nigeria ,promising to investigate allegations of abuses from oil pollution and forced evictions to charges of military killings of civilians in the fight against Boko Haram Islamic extremists .
“ From the relatives of the thousands killed and missing in northeast Nigeria to the thousands of villagers in the Niger Delta who cannot plant crops or drink clean water because of oil pollution , Amnesty International will stand in solidarity with all the people in Nigeria who face human rights violations and abuses , ” said the director of the office in Abuja, the capital, veteran Nigerian career diplomat M. K . Ibrahim.
Nigeria ’s new government invited the London-based human rights group into the country , Ibrahim told the AP , after its report accusing Nigeria ’s military of killing some 800 civilian detainees by shooting, torture , starvation and suffocation . Amnesty named five senior officers it said should be tried for war crimes in its March report.
The Associated Press has reported the deaths of some 3, 000 people in military detention within a matter of months in 2013 , and the shootings of hundreds of unarmed detainees freed from a barracks in northeastern Maiduguri in a Boko Haram attack last year
Amnesty had a combative relationship with the previous Nigerian government, headed by Goodluck Jonathan, which denied allegations of gross military abuses .
But Buhari , who won elections that brought the West African oil producer its first democratic change of government , has promised to investigate the charges. Buhari told Amnesty that the investigation can start only after the appointment of a justice minister and attorney general, expected in coming weeks , said Ibrahim.
One of Buhari ’ s first acts after his May 30 inauguration was to fire all the military chiefs.
