The Nigerian Air Force boosts Air Power capability against insurgency
On 21 March 2020, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) reactivated and commissioned another Alpha Jet after its Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM). The commissioning of an additional Alpha Jet, with serial number NAF455, took place at the Kainji's 407 Air Combat Training Group (407 ACTG) overhaul depot.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, expressed his satisfaction with the conduct of the PDM with avionics upgrade. It was also stated that the reactivation of NAF455 would go a long way in boosting the morale of troops on the frontlines and better equip the NAF in its drive to sustain the offensive initiative against the terrorists and insurgents. According to Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, the in-house PDM, apart from being cost-effective when compared to the overseas option, would also provide NAF technicians the opportunity to build better technical capacities.
Kainji Air Base, located near the city of New Bussa, is named after the Kainji Lake which is situated nearby. Some five more Alpha Jets, apparently awaiting PDM, were observed in Kainji's main hangar during the commissioning ceremony.
Strikingly, Alpha Jet NAF455 (former Luftwaffe 98+47), which flew during the ceremony (with a female pilot), was provided with a new blue-blue colour scheme. Originally delivered to the NAF in 1982, NAF455 was normallly seen in grey maritime c/s.
Scramble processed fourteen active Nigerian Alpha Jets in its database (NAF450, 452, 453, 454, 455, 461, 465, 470, 471, 474, 475, 476, 477, 478). Any updates are welcome. The aircraft are based at Lagos/Murtala Muhammed and assigned to the 99 Air Weapons School/ 909 Tactical Fighter Training Wing and at Port Harcourt with the 97 Special Operations Group/ 206 Wing.

- Nigeria receives VT4 main battle tanks from China
by Dylan Malyasov — 10:31 (GMT+0000) April 9, 2020
The Nigerian Army has taken delivery of a shipment of military vehicles from the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO).
According to local sources, NORINCO delivered the first of 17 military vehicles compromising of VT4 main battle tanks, SH5 105mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers and ST1 tank destroys.
Taking delivery of the armaments Wednesday, Army’s Chief of Policy and Plans (CPPLANS) Lieutenant General Lamidi Adeosun said Nigerians should expect more robust operations to put behind the menace of insecurity including Boko Haram, banditry and others, according to thisdaylive.com.
He said the weapons were acquired through the Ministry of Defence, adding that adequate preparations were made for maintenance and availability of spare parts.
Adeosun said: “The process of acquiring this has been on for some time but thank God they are coming in now.
“From this, you can see how serious the Federal Government of Nigeria is in making sure that the Nigerian Army is not only equipped ,but contains problem of insecurity we are having across the country.
“This is being tackled with trained personnel and required equipment. What you are seeing here is just a tip of the iceberg. Others are still coming but it is very important that we all see that both the military and the government are really very serious to tackle the security problems across the nation.”
Asked where the armaments were acquired from, Adeosun said they were brand new weapons from China, adding “they are in different categories- heavy tanks, light tanks and we also have two types of artillery weapons, all from China. They have the latest technology in tanks and armament.
“The first set of 15 40-foot containers that were offloaded before today were made up of spareparts and accessories of all these equipment.
“So, those ones are already out of the port and on their way to their destinations. Just as we are here, most of these ones will move to their respective destinations as well.
“Those who will operate them have been trained in China. If not for the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19, we expected some of their trainers to join us here to train more people.
“From the army, expect more robust operation to put behind us the menace of insecurity, that of Boko Haram, bandits among others.”

- Aerosonde UAS sells to Africa
Gareth Jennings, London - Jane's Defence Weekly
11 May 2020
The US Department of Defense (DoD) has contracted AAI Corporation to deliver its Aerosonde Mk 4.7 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to two African nations.
The Aerosonde Mk 4.7 unmanned aircraft will soon be joining the armed forces of both Nigeria and Uganda, under contracts announced by the US DoD on 8 May. (AAI Corporation)
The contracts for AAI Corporation (doing business as Textron Systems), both announced on 8 May, cover three UASs for Nigeria and two for Uganda, and are valued at USD25.6 million and USD20.8 million respectively.
Both awards include spares, support, training, and other equipment and services. The award for Nigeria runs through to 30 September 2021, while Uganda’s expires the following year on 30 September 2022.
As noted in Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft: Unmanned (JUAV), the Aerosonde Mk 4.7 UAS is a tactical system, development of which was first launched in the early 1990s.
It is a single-piston-engined platform capable of flying multimission payloads and can be outfitted with electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) cameras, laser sensors, ’intelligence’ payloads, communications relay equipment, mapping and survey sensors, and an automatic identification system for maritime ship tracking, among others. | |
