It is feared that the covert Club-K missile attack system could prove "game-changing" in fighting wars with small countries, which would gain a remote capacity to mount multiple missiles on boats, trucks or railways.

Iran and Venezuela have already shown an interest in the Club-K Container Missile System which could allow them to carry out pre-emptive strikes from behind an enemy's missile defences.

Defence experts say the system is designed to be concealed as a standard 40ft shipping container that cannot be identified until it is activated.

Priced at an estimated £10 million, each container is fitted with four cruise anti-ship or land attack missiles. The system represents an affordable "strategic level weapon".

Some experts believe that if Iraq had the Club-K system in 2003 it would have made it impossible for America to invade with any container ship in the Gulf a potential threat.

Club-K is being marketed at the Defence Services Asia exhibition in Malaysia this week.

Novator, the manufacturer, is an advanced missile specialist that would not have marketed the system without Moscow's approval. It has released an emotive marketing film complete with dramatic background music.

It shows Club-K containers stowed on ships, trucks and trains as a neighbouring country prepares to invade with American style military equipment.

The enemy force is wiped out by the cruise missile counter attack.

Russia has already prompted concern in Washington by selling Iran the sophisticated S-300 anti-aircraft missile system that would make targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities very difficult.

"This Club-K is game changing with the ability to wipe out an aircraft carrier 200 miles away. The threat is immense in that no one can tell how far deployed your missiles could be," said Robert Hewson, editor of Jane's Air-Launched Weapons, who first reported on the Club-K developments.

"What alerted me to this was that the Russians were advertising it at specific international defence event and they have marketed it very squarely at anyone under threat of action from the US."

Reuben Johnson, a Pentagon defence consultant, said the system would be a "real maritime fear for anyone with a waterfront".

"This is ballistic missile proliferation on a scale we have not seen before because now you cannot readily identify what's being used as a launcher because it's very carefully disguised.

"Someone could sail off your shore looking innocuous then the next minute big explosions are going off at your military installations."

Le système Klub est très interessant, moi j'y vois un autre intérêt, c'est pas vraiment le club-K et son astuce du container qui m'impressionne, ce qui m'interesse le plus c'est que l'ensemble des versions M, N, K et S sont à mi-chemin entre: d'une part la lutte anti navale/artillerie côtière et d'autre part l'artillerie langue portée/missiles sol-sol moyenne portée.

Le concepteur et fabriquant des missiles de croisière Club, la compagnie russe Morinformsistema-Agat se prépare à augmente la portée des missiles de 220 - 270 à 500 km, a annoncé la compagnie.
"C’est la 3è fois que nous présentons notre production principale — les différentes versions du missile : Club-M, Club-K, et Club-U. Ils ont provoqué un grand intérêt de la part de nombreux pays. Nous avons reçu des demandes commerciales de divers états d’Asie et d’Europe", a souligné un représentant de la compagnie. "Rosoboronexport leur a déjà envoyé les offres appropriées. Normalement, il s’écoule 3 ans entre la demande commerciale et la signature du contrat", a-t-il ajouté.
Le représentant a précisé que "nous sommes prêts à augmenter la portée du missile Club à 500 km. Il n’y a aucun problème pour le faire en réduisant le poids de la charge emportée. C’est tout à fait possible, compte-tenu des avancées récentes des technologies des missiles. Et nous avons déjà fait une proposition au Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation. Techniquement, la portée du missile peut facilement être augmentée à 500 km", a-t-il ajouté.
La version côtière du missile, le Club-K peut détruire des cibles de surface et à terre jusqu’à une distance de 275 km. Un lanceur mobile à 8 roues emporte 6 missiles. La distance de détection de la cible en passif est de 450 km.
Le système Club-K a l’apparence d’un conteneur maritime standard. Il peut être installé sur des plate-formes maritimes, routières ou ferroviaires. Selon le missile utilisé, la porté varie de 12,5 à 275 km.
Le missile Club-U est destiné aux bâtiments de surface.

Il m'impressionne ce missile, j'ai toujours pensé qu'on doit porter notre intérêt sur la version M, très pratique et très redoutable, j'ai toujours espérer qu'on en achetera 2 lots, un lot pour la protéection des côtes et un deuxième pour l'Artillerie Royale pour les frappes de précision à plus de 200 km.

Group company Morinformsistema-Agat will present container-based missile system Club-K at International Maritime Defense Show IMDS-2011 to be held late in June, reports Central Navy Portal referring to the company's press service.

JSC Morinformsistema-Agat plans to introduce (firstly in actual size) the launcher of container-based missile system Club-K at the fifth International Maritime Defense Show IMDS-2011 which will be held in St. Petersburg since June 29 till July 3, 2011.

Models and video clips of container version of Club missile system was firstly presented at DIMDEX-2010 in Qatar in March 2010, then at EURONAVAL-2010 in Oct 2010. It aroused great interest and storm of comments from scientists, politicians and, especially, independent experts.

Container-based missile system Club-K is designed for destruction of sea surface and land targets by cruise missiles 3M-54TE, 3M-54TE1, and 3M-14TE. The system can be deployed at coastal positions, various surface ships, railway and automotive platforms. The system's elements are placed in standard 40-feet shipping container.

Functionally, Club-K missile system consists of multipurpose launch module (MLM), combat control module (CCM), and power-supply and life-support module (PLM).

Multipurpose launch module is used for preparation and launch of missiles from transport/launch containers; it contains elevating 4-missile launcher.

MOSCOW - Russia will design an air-launched version of its SS-N-27 Klub (also spelled Club) cruise missile. This missile is already available for launching from ships, submarines, and coastal sites. Morinformsistema-Agat, NPP Radar-MMS, and Ilyushin will cooperate in the development of this version. The partners will base this model on the Klub-K. The launch platform for this missile will be the Il-76 cargo aircraft. The team will modify a sea-based container launch system for use from this transport. In addition, the new version will be compatible with carrier-borne aircraft.

Initial tests of the air-launched missile are planned in 2011 and 2012.

Five types of missiles - 3M-54E, 3M-54E1, 3M-14E, 91RE1 and 91RE2 - have been developed for the Club ASCM. The Club-S can be armed with a 3M-54E or 3M-54E1 anti-ship missile, 3M-14E submarine-to-coast missile or a 91RE1 anti-submarine torpedo. The Club-N can be armed with a 3M-54E or 3M-54E1 anti-ship missile, 3M-14E submarine-to-coast missile or a 91RE2 anti-submarine torpedo.

The missile is 6.2 meters long, which is the same as the length of the standard torpedo tubes used by Western navies. It is designed according to the double-stage cruise scheme. The first solid-fuel stage ensures the missile's launch from a universal vertical launcher of a surface craft or from a submarine torpedo tube with a diameter of 0.533 meters.

The 3M-54E missile has a range of 300 km. For the majority of its trajectory it flies at a high subsonic speed. The first stage drops off when the missile reaches the prescribed altitude and its second stage sustainer engine goes into action. This is the time when the missile's wing and tail assembly unfold. The altitude of its flight goes down to 10-15 metres above the sea surface and the missile heads towards the target in accordance with the target designations, fed before the start into the memory of its board guidance system. The targeting on the cruise sector of the trajectory is effected by an inertia navigation system. The end sector of the missile's flight with the homing head active proceeds only five metres above the water surface. At 60 km from its target the third, solid-fuel stage separates from the missile, accelerates to supersonic speed and overcomes the defence zone of the target vessel

In spite of its relatively small launch weight of 1,570 kilograms, the missile has a range of 300 kilometres and a powerful 450-kilogram warhead, which can blow up very large surface craft. The missile's moderate weight allows even warships with a small displacement to take aboard quite a few of such deadly weapons.

India is making substantial purchases of the Novator 3M-54 Alfa missile to equip Kilo class submarines and its new frigates. The first two Indian 877YeKM submarines (Kilo class, according to NATO classification) will be armed with the latest Russian 3M-54E antiship cruise missiles. These missiles will also be fitted onto three frigates which are being built to order for the Indian navy at the Baltic shipyard in St Petersburg. Each of the frigates will carry eight antiship missiles which will be launched from vertical launch containers on the bow of the ship.

It is believed that an air-launched variant will be purchased to arm the Tu-142s currently in service and the six to eight additional aircraft being sought by the Navy. If an air-launched version of the Alfa is procured, it is anticipated that India's Tu-22M3s will eventually be equipped to fire them.
