- South Africa court 'halts Zimbabwe helicopter donation'
A court in South Africa has temporarily halted a delivery of helicopters to the Zimbabwean military, human rights group AfriForum says.
The group made the urgent request when it heard about the donation of South Africa's retired Alouette fleet.
It said it would be irresponsible to give equipment to a force that was not neutral ahead of this year's elections.
South Africa's defence ministry said the aircraft would not be assembled and would be used only for spare parts.
Elections in Zimbabwe in 2008 were marred by violence and allegations of vote-rigging.
Following regional negotiations led by South Africa, President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party entered into a fractious coalition with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
A recent report by US-based Human Rights Watch said that four years on, the security forces were still politically partisan, remaining loyal to Mr Mugabe and Zanu-PF.
Zimbabwe is also subject to a European Union arms embargo. 'Record of abuses' AfriForum said High Court judge N B Tuchten had forbidden South Africa's government from exporting any Alouette helicopters or spares for such helicopters to Zimbabwe until a full hearing could be held on 19 February.
Willie Spies, a lawyer for the South African lobby group, told the BBC's Focus on Africa radio programme that he was confident the court order would then be upheld.
"We know that Zimbabwe has got a record of human rights abuses," Mr Spies said.
"We know what happened during 2008 with the second round presidential elections. We know the Zimbabwe Defence Forces are not a neutral defence force committed to defending the Zimbabwean state," he added.
"It's an aggressive force that's been used against the people of Zimbabwe to suppress the opposition."
With such knowledge, it did not make sense to sit by and allow South Africa's to donate the helicopters, Mr Spies said. 'Phased out' Earlier on Friday, South Africa's Mail and Guardian newspaper reported that it had seen confidential minutes of a meeting held two months ago between the defence chiefs of South Africa and Zimbabwe detailing the "disposal of Alouette III helicopters and spares".
South Africa's defence department told the paper the donation was part of an agreement that dated back to 1997.
"We are sending spare parts of the helicopter that has been phased out and the frames," defence department spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini told the AFP news agency.
"These things are not assembled - they are spare parts and frames. There is nothing like a fully-fledged helicopter."
According to AfriForum, the French-manufactured helicopters were used by South Africa's apartheid government during Angola's civil war in the 1970s and 1980s to carry out air-to-ground attacks in support of the rebels.
Last week, Zimbabwe's rival political leaders reached a deal over a new constitution, removing a key obstacle to holding elections.

- Ashok Leyland completed delivery of 633 military vehicles to Zimbabwean Defense Ministry
The government of Zimbabwe last week took delivery of the 633 vehicles purchased from India at a cost of US$50 million, which include all-terrain troop-carrying trucks and water cannons mostly used by the military and police, unveiled the local newspaper Zimbabwe Independent.
Government sources said this week the first batch of vehicles arrived last Friday and was packed at the Zimbabwe National Army’s Harare Base Workshops Ordnance Supply Depot at Msasa in Harare.
The last batch arrived on Sunday and was also taken to Msasa, from where they will be despatched to different units.
Despite being cash-strapped, government is secretly bolstering its instruments of repression to combat any possible Arab Spring-style uprising ignited by the explosive socio-economic situation in the country.
Senior government officials told the Zimbabwe Independent last week that in order to cover up the security vehicles which authorities are anxious to hide, the consignment in the bill of landing was described as cars for the “Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality activities, especially for promotion of domestic tourism and supporting international tourism, disaster management, anti-poaching activities, peace missions and other related purposes”.
The vehicles were bought from Ashok Leyland Ltd — an Indian automobile manufacturing company based in Chennai. Under the contract, Ashok Leyland, besides supplying the vehicles, will also provide training for Zimbabwe’s technical staff in operation and maintenance of the vehicles.
The contract was financed by Export-Import Bank of India through its buyer’s credit extended to Zimbabwe’s Finance ministry under the national export insurance account to the tune of US$49,92 million.
Military sources also confirmed the vehicles were taken to the Ordnance Supply Depot.
“The vehicles, which include military tankers, trucks and buses arrived on Friday last week and we saw them bee-lining to the military depot,” a source said.
Vendors operating near the depot confirmed seeing the vehicles. “This road has been busy from Friday to Sunday as the vehicles arrived in groups,” said an airtime vendor whose stall is near the base. “The vehicles were in groups of more than 50 and were escorted by military police.”
In December 2013, government bought hardware which included anti-riot gear and equipment, trucks and armoured vehicles worth millions of dollars, as first reported by the Independent.
At a Zimbabwe Republic Police passout parade at Morris Depot in May, Mugabe commissioned 97 vehicles, among them 20 buses, all-terrain troop-carrying trucks, water cannons and ordinary trucks.
The vehicles have since been distributed countrywide. Then Home Affairs minister Kembo Mohadi said the vehicles, which make large-scale deployment of police officers easier, would enhance police capacity.

- Zimbabwe Denies Recruitment Drive Rumor
January 22, 2016
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) has dismissed rumours that it will embark on massive recruitment in various provinces starting from February this year.
In a statement yesterday [January 21], ZDF said the falsehoods were published in some private newspapers and the social media resulting in the ZDF being flooded with calls from people seeking clarification on the information.
“The Zimbabwe Defence Forces hereby refutes and disapproves rumours being perpetrated by some unruly elements within our society that the ZDF is on the verge of a massive recruitment exercise,” ZDF said in a statement.
“The ZDF would like to advise the general public that there is no such recruitment exercise intended now or in the near future as propagated.”
“To this end, the public is hereby informed that the ZDF will follow the normal channels of communicating to the public whenever intentions to recruit arise.
“The public is therefore requested to ignore these false pronouncements,” said ZDF.
NewsDay, in its January 19 edition, published a story that Government had announced plans to recruit more soldiers.

- Zimbabwe Air Force Promotion
March 8, 2016
President Mugabe has promoted an Air Force of Zimbabwe senior officer to the rank of group captain.
Group Captain Sydney Katsande was promoted and appointed AFZ finance director, replacing Air Commodore Ellen Chiweshe, who was recently elevated to be the first female Air Commodore in the AFZ. His promotion and appointment are with effect from February 26. Grp Cpt Katsande was promoted in line with Section 15(1)(b) of the Defence Act Chapter 11:02, which states that the President may promote or temporarily appoint officers to higher rank following the recommendations from the Minister of Defence.
“It is recommended that His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces may be pleased in terms of Section 15(1)(b) of the Defence Act (Chapter 11:02) to promote the above officer to a substantive rank of a Group Captain with effect from date of approval,” it reads.
Speaking after the conferment of the rank at the AFZ Headquarters in Harare yesterday [March 7], AFZ Commander Air Marshal Perrance Shiri said promotions in the Air Force were based on merit and not just hand-picking individuals.

- Zimbabwe, Angola Bind Security Agreement
September 6, 2016 69 SHARE Facebook Twitter Zimbabwe and Angola’s defence forces will continue exchanging notes in order to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, visiting Chief of Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces General Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, said yesterday [September 5]. In an interview, Gen Nunda said the visit was also meant to reassure the people from both countries that their relationship dates back to the time of the liberation struggle. “My visit to Zimbabwe is to strengthen the relations between the two countries, Zimbabwe and Angola, as well as the two national Defence Forces. We want to reaffirm to our people that Zimbabwe and Angola are brotherly nations,” he said.
Gen Nunda and his delegation arrived in the country over the weekend and the visit was aimed at enabling the two Defence Forces to strengthen bilateral ties.
He visited the Zimbabwe National Army headquarters in Harare yesterday where he first had a Joint Guard of Honour with Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Constantino Guveya Chiwenga.
He later paid a courtesy call at the ZDF offices where a presentation was made on the organisation and roles of the Ministry of Defence.
The presentation was also attended by Commander ZNA Lieutenant General Philip Valerio Sibanda, Commander Air Force of Zimbabwe Air Marshal Perence Shiri, Major-Generals Douglas Nyikayaramba and Engelbrecht Rugeje, among other senior ZDF officers.
According to his itinerary, Gen Nunda is expected to visit the National Defence College, Zimbabwe Defence Industry, Zimbabwe Military Academy and the National Heroes Acre, among others areas.
In April last year, a 10-member delegation from the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), met President Mugabe at his Munhumutapa offices to share notes on the two countries’ experiences since the attainment of independence.
The delegation was led by MPLA secretary-general Cde Juliao Mateus Paulo.
Speaking to journalists after a closed door meeting with President Mugabe, Cde Paulo said their discussions centred on the two countries’ liberation struggles and possible ways of strengthening relations between Zanu-PF and the MPLA.

Source: Anadolu Agency/Getty Images The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) made extensive use of Chinese-made Type 89 armoured vehicles during what appeared to be a bloodless coup that ousted President Robert Mugabe on 14 November. Photographs and video footage of ZNA deployments around the capital Harare showed multiple Type YW534s, the armoured personnel carrier (APC) variant of the Type 89, armed with 12.7 mm heavy machine guns. At least one armoured recovery vehicle, one mortar carrier, one ambulance, and two command post variants of the Type 89 were also deployed. At least one Type YW307, the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) variant armed with a 25 mm turret, was also observed. The YW534 is a 14.5-tonne vehicle with a crew of two and up to 13 dismounts. While the Type 89 series is very similar to the Type 85, it is slightly longer and the APC version has four firing ports and episcopes on each side of its hull instead of three. The YW307 is heavier at 15.4 tonnes and has a crew of three with seven dismounts. Neither the UN Register of Conventional Arms nor the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has any record of the delivery of Type 89s to Zimbabwe. The vehicles appeared to be well-maintained, despite Zimbabwe’s economic problems over the last decade. None of the other types of armoured vehicles that the ZNA has in its inventory, which include EE-9 Cascavel armoured cars and EE-11 Urutu APCs, were seen during the operation. Eyewitness reports and video footage of Type 89s on their way into Harare indicated the armoured vehicles came from Inkomo Barracks near Nyabira, the base of the ZNA’s Mechanised Brigade.” | |

- 8 Soldiers In Armed Robbery In Concession
Eight members of the Zimbabwe National army reportedly stormed Ceola mine, Concession last week armed with three pistols using a military vehicle and tried to disarm security guards before stealing gold ore valued at US$150.
The matter came to light at Concession hospital on Friday where one of the soldiers is admitted after being mauled by guard dogs and failed to jump in their escape vehicle as they were escaping.
Shelton Marerwa (52) was remanded in custody to 28 June while on his hospital bed by Concession resident magistrate Ruth Moyo.
Prosecuting Moses Kuimba alleges Marewa who holds the rank of captain together with his seven accomplices who are still at large stormed Ceola mine, Concession and forced entry before identifying themselves as members from the President’s office.
The soldiers who were armed with three loaded pistols demanded storeroom keys, alleging that mine firearms have no licences while ordering the security guards to surrender their fire arms to them.
The guards resisted and started fighting with the soldiers before unleashing dogs on them, The soldiers were overpowered and fled while leaving their captain behind who was injured in the fight.
The accused managed to steal a cellphone and some gold ore before driving away in the military truck.
The truck had a break down after a few kilometres and the soldiers dumped it by the road side, members of the police had to tow it to Mazowe police station where it is currently parked as exhibit.
Meanwhile, the alleged robbery comes at a time when the ZNA warned its members not to commit any crimes as they will face the wrath of the law regardless of their ranks.

- Air Force of Zimbabwe takes delivery of H215 transport helicopter
Aviation Defense News April 2021 aerospace air force industry
POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, 28 APRIL 2021 14:58 On April 18, The Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) has taken delivery of an Airbus H215 helicopter. According to some undisclosed sources, the helicopter is intended to serve as VIP transport helicopter and replace the aged Cougar helicopter used to fly the President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The Airbus Helicopters H215 (formerly Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma) is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-size utility helicopter developed and marketed originally by Aérospatiale, later by Eurocopter and currently by Airbus Helicopters. It is a re-engined and more voluminous version of the original Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma.
The H215’s large interior accommodates 19 passengers comfortably or up to 22 troops, making it ideal for passenger transport. It can also be used for executive and VIP transport, with up to 12 seats, and as a corporate shuttle. As a head-of-state aircraft, cabin layouts can include front and rear lounges, galleys and lavatories, along with food service galleys.
In aerial work and utility missions, the H215 offers a cargo sling capacity of up to 4.5 tonnes and good high and hot performance. Heavy internal loads are facilitated through large sliding doors that allow bulky freight to be loaded and unloaded, while its rear access facilitates the handling of long loads.
