Tuesday, 22 January 2013 - 17:54 Chevron Signs Petroleum Deals in Offshore Morocco
By Saabira Chaudhuri
Chevron Corp. (CVX) has signed petroleum agreements related to three offshore areas in Morocco, a push to expand its footprint in frontier basins.
The oil and gas company has signed the agreements with Morocco's Office National Des Hydrocarbures Et Des Mines which, once awarded, will allow Chevron to acquire seismic data and conduct studies in deepwater areas known as Cap Rhir Deep, Cap Cantin Deep and Cap Walidia Deep located between 60 miles and 120 miles west and northwest of Agadir, Morocco. The areas encompass about 11,300 square miles with average water depths ranging from between 330 feet to 14,700 feet.
"This is an opportunity for Chevron to expand its already strong presence in the region and allows us to acquire further knowledge about promising geology in an emerging area," said Ali Moshiri, president of Chevron Africa and Latin America Exploration and Production Co.
Chevron has a 75% working interest in the three areas, with the Office National Des Hydrocarbures Et Des Mines holding the remaining 25%.
Chevron and other large oil and gas producers have been suffering the impact of a shaky global economy on oil and gas prices. In November, Chevron reported its third-quarter earnings fell 33%, missing expectations as its oil and gas production was disrupted by maintenance, legal issues and storms, and a refinery fire in California caused a sharp drop in fuel sales.
Earlier this month, the second-largest U.S. oil company by market value said it expects its fourth-quarter profit to rise compared with the previous quarter, benefiting from gains on assets and increased U.S. and international production.
Last month, Chevron said its Australian unit made two more natural-gas discoveries in the Exmouth Plateau area of the Carnarvon Basin, a hydrocarbon basin offshore western Australia.
Shares edged down by 55 cents to $114.69 in recent trading. The stock has risen 7.3% in the past 12 months.

SanLeon a écrit:
Memorandum of Understanding ("MoU") Signed with Chevron Lummus Global
28 January 2014
San Leon Energy Plc (“San Leon” or “the Company”), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding ("MoU") with Chevron Lummus Global LLC (“CLG”), to exclusively cooperate in respect of the oil shale upgrading technology required to produce high quality synthetic crude oil from the raw shale oil to be produced in the Company’s Timahdit oil shale License Area, Morocco.
The MoU will result in a detailed evaluation by CLG focused on implementing proven proprietary CLG technology on the raw shale oil produced at the proposed Timahdit Plant to be designed and delivered in cooperation with Enefit Outotec Technology ("EOT", see also www.enefit.com/eot), a joint venture of the world’s leading oil shale energy company Enefit and mineral and metals processing technology group Outotec. The proposed Timahdit Plant, as described in the Initial EOT Evaluation Study, will be built using the latest “Enefit280” process and EOT’s experience.
Chevron Lummus Global will propose a design for an Oil Shale Upgrading unit to produce high quality synthetic crude oil which will then be refined locally. CLG has already licensed its hydrocracking technology to the Samir Refinery in Mohammedia, Morocco.
The Initial EOT study proposes that the Timahdit Plant will have three (3) “Enefit 280” units. The Plant will be designed with the ability to increase capacity to exploit the Estimated resource of 600 million bbl of shale oil within SLE’s Timahdit License area as suggested by historical data and confirmed by the EOT study.
SLE is currently conducting a core drilling operation to extract samples from the Timahdit oil shale deposit for testing at the Enefit Bench Scale plant located at EOT's R&D centre in Frankfurt, Germany. The results of these tests are expected to be available in Q2 2014.
An updated feasibility study for the Timahdit Oil Shale project is currently planned to be completed by year-end. This will facilitate the completion of project finance to fund the construction of the proposed plant envisaged to begin after 2015. Initial reactions from financial institutions have been very encouraging based on the strong interest in investing in Morocco’s energy future.
In August 2013, San Leon was offered exclusive rights to the 36 km2 Timahdit Oil Shale License for two years to evaluate the commercial viability of a surface retorting project on the prolific Timahdit oil shale deposit. Timahdit's shale oil yield in the awarded area is considered to be the highest in Morocco with an average of 100 l/t in the rich layers and has significantly less moisture content than many other international oil shale deposits. The project will also include power generation facilities.
Executive Chairman, Oisin Fanning commented,
“I very much welcome CLG as our upgrading partner in the Timahdit project. CLG is a world leader in upgrading technology who brings real strength to our team. Our continued cooperation with our existing partners, ONHYM in Morocco, along with Enefit and now CLG, brings further credibility to San Leon’s commitment to commercially develop oil shale in Morocco.”

US' Kosmos to drill first oil well offshore Morocco in mid-March: official
London (Platts)--18Feb2014/944 am EST/1444 GMT
Dallas-based Kosmos Energy plans to drill its first well offshore Morocco in the coming weeks in a bid to unlock the multi-billion barrel potential of the North African country's waters, a senior Kosmos official said Tuesday.
Speaking at International Petroleum Week in London, Kosmos' country manager for Morocco, Ragnar Fredsted, said Morocco's offshore was one of the last remaining unexplored deepwater basins in the world.
"We will spud the first well in a couple of weeks -- in mid-March," he said.
The well, FA-1 in the Foum Assaka block, is targeting up to 500 million barrels of oil.
Fredsted said there was no more acreage available offshore Morocco as the industry "cottoned on" to its potential.
Oil companies have poured into Morocco in recent years including Chevron and Plains Exploration & Production of the US, Portugal's Galp Energia and UK-Anglo Genel Energy.
Between them, some 10 exploration wells will be drilled in the next 1-2 years, Fredsted said.
No exploration wells had been drilled offshore Morocco for 10 years until a failed well drilled in 2013 by the UK's Cairn Energy.
Cairn has interests in three blocks offshore Morocco -- two as operator and one as non-operator.
The first well, FD-1, encountered gas shows, but was plugged and abandoned, while a second well, JM-1, is currently drilling, Cairn chief operating officer Paul Mayland said at the same event.

Rharb Permits
Acquisition of the 225 square kilometre 3D seismic survey, covering the prospective south-western portion of the Rharb permit was completed in October 2013. The data acquired in that programme is currently undergoing processing by CGG-Veritas. A fast-track preliminary volume of the processed 3D data has been delivered and is being used for basic analyses and lead identification in the area covered by the new survey.
The final volume of processed data is anticipated to be delivered in early March 2014 enabling the selection of future drilling locations in this area of the Rharb permits utilising the new 3D data rather than the 2D data which was of lesser quality but was the only previously available seismic data over the Rharb permits. It is anticipated that the next well to be drilled, which will be the fourth well in the current programme, can be selected with the benefit of the 3D data acquired in the recent seismic programme.
As contemplated by the Company's drilling contract with COFOR, the drilling contractor, it is anticipated that drilling operations on the fourth well in the Company's Rharb drilling programme will commence in late March or early April although the exact timing of the commencement of operations is dependent upon a number of factors including local weather conditions which currently restrict access to some areas of the permit. A further announcement will be made when drilling operations commence.
Fes Permit
The 650 km 2D seismic programme within the Fes permit is nearing completion. As a consequence of weather disruption to the data acquisition programme, this programme has taken significantly longer than originally anticipated and therefore there will be some delay in completing the processing of data for use in interpretation and identification of drilling targets.
As the Fes area is known to be structurally complex, prior to the Company's receipt of the data, it will undergo a number of additional and more sophisticated processes than would usually be the case, including depth migration processing. Notwithstanding the additional time and cost involved in applying these sophisticated processing techniques, it is anticipated that the resulting data set will be significantly enhanced and assist with the interpretation of the data captured during this programme in order to develop the leads into drillable prospects.
It is anticipated that a drilling target will be identified during the 3rd quarter of this year and accordingly the Company has commenced a process to identify and select a suitable rig for drilling on the Fes licence later this year.
