IDEX 2015: Extended range air defence fires up
Raytheon is developing a new extended range (ER) variant of the AMRAAM (AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) for ground air defence in partnership with Kongsberg.
The AMRAAM-ER is part of the latest evolution of the company’s NASAMS launcher, Hans Christian Hagen, vice president of business development of Kongsberg’s Integrated Defence System, told Shephard at IDEX in Abu Dhabi.
Development work on the missile started in 2014 and the AMRAAM-ER uses the guidance system of the standard AMRAAM but married to the ESSM launcher to give it the additional range and altitude.
The additional range and altitude could not be disclosed but it is thought to be similar in capability to Raytheon’s MIM-23 Hawk air defence system of 40-50km and up to 45,000ft.
Ricky Freibert, vice president of business development at Raytheon, told Shephard that a demonstration will take place by the end of the year with production expected by 2019. He added that the algorithms in the guidance section are common with the AMRAAM so when that system evolves so will the ER variant.
NASAMS is available as a canister launcher system or as mobile one mounted on a 4x4 High Mobility Launcher (HML). Hagen said that there are only small modifications needed to the rail on the launcher because the ER variant is longer and to the control system software. The rail is the same as that on the F-16.
However, the AMRAAM-ER is heavier than the AMRAAM already fired from the NASAMS. The additional weight means that the HML vehicle used in the mobile system would need adapting to carry the weight, but it would be able to carry two ER missiles in its current form. The HML can carry six standard AMRAAM missiles.
Hagen said the canister launch NASAMS can hold six missiles each. There are 12 canister launchers in a battalion so it would offer a total of 72 rounds that can be directed at 72 different targets simultaneously if required as it is a fire-and-forget missile.
He added that the fire direction controllers for the NASAMS launchers are connected together by VHF radio in a network that is almost self-healing, if one node drops out then the launcher can connect to another controller allowing the GBAD system to be spread out over a wide area even in mountainous terrain.
The AMRAAM-ER is available to all NASAMS users. Oman selected the NASAMS system in January 2014.

IDEX 2015: Military Industry Corporation et son Caesar “Made in Sudan”

IDEX 2015: Sudan boosts presence second time around

Sudan's Military Industry Corporation (MIC) has increased its presence and brought a wider variety of its products to IDEX, having made its debut at the show in 2013.
In addition to its main stand, the company booked space in the static outside area, where it displayed its Khalifa-1 self-propelled gun, the 120 mm mortar carrier variant of its Khatim-2 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), a mobile version of the Taka 107 mm multiple rocket launcher, the Nimr long-range patrol vehicle, unarmoured Tamal tactical vehicle, and the previously unseen Sarsar-2 armoured reconnaissance vehicle.
The Khalifa-1 gun is essentially a 122 mm D-30 howitzer mounted on the back of a modified Kamaz 6x6 truck.
The Khatim-2 has been identified as the Sudanese version of the Iranian Boraq-2 IFV, which is similar to the Russian BMP-2.
With a combat weight of 5,500 kg, the new Sarsar vehicle is built on a 1.2 ton KIA chassis and is listed as being armoured to the Russian CEN level BR6, which can withstand standard 7.62x51 mm bullets.
The Iranian connection continued on the MIC's main stand, where a stabilised remote weapon station called the Ateed was on display. This appeared to be identical to the ARIO-H762, which is made by the Iranian company Rayan Roshd.
There were other new products on the main stand that appeared to be of Chinese, rather than Sudanese origin. Most notably, the Sarib anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) strongly resembles the Chinese HJ-8 optically tracked, wire-guided system on the lightweight launcher (known as the HJ-8L).
The MIC documentation for the Sarib said it is capable of penetrating 220 mm of homogenous armour steel plate at an angle of 68 degrees with explosive reactive armour: the same lethality as the HJ-8C tandem warhead missile.
The MIC also displayed two scale models of what appeared to be FN-6 man-portable air defence system (MANPADS), but there did not appear to be any supporting documentation claiming the weapon was being manufactured in Sudan.
Another Chinese weapon, the 35 mm QLZ-87 automatic grenade launcher, that the MIC says it produces under the name Ahmed was not on display.

Raytheon's Talon guidance kit for 70 mm rockets appears to have been given a new lease of life through a collaboration with the Emirati company that produces the Nimr range of armoured vehicles.
Raytheon announced at the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi that it was working with Nimr Automotive, which is part of the Emirates Defence Industries Company (EDIC), to integrate the Talon with its vehicle.
"In partnership with EDIC, we are providing an affordable, near-term, and reliable solution," said Michelle Lohmeier, vice-president of Raytheon Land Warfare Systems.
A 6x6 Nimr was displayed at the show with a launcher for 16 Talon missiles and two anti-tank guided missiles, as well as electro-optical sensors mounted on a retractable mast, which would allow the weapons to be fired from a concealed position.
Nimr CEO Dr Fahad Saif Harhara provided an overview of the tactical situations where a Talon launcher on a light armoured vehicle might be useful, saying it could be used for armed reconnaissance, infrastructure defence, defensive fire suppression, and border security.
"It can also support rapidly advancing infantry," he added. "The mobile and fixed firing modes enhance the vehicle's effectiveness and provide a significant advantage over existing heavy artillery."

IDEX 2015: Mistral in the running for UAE V-SHORAD requirement
Jeremy Binnie, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
The first four MPCS vehicles on Mercedes chassis (badged as Soframe vehicles) seen at an MBDA facility prior to delivery to Saudi Arabia in 2013. Source: MBDA
MBDA has teamed with Nimr Automotive to submit a version of its Multi-Purpose Combat System (MPCS) for an Emirati Defences Forces requirement for a very short-range air defence system (V-SHORAD).
MBDA announced, at the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi, that the two companies were developing the Hafeet ADV to meet the requirement for a "high-efficiency V-SHORAD" system.
The Hafeet ADV is essentially the MPCS, which uses the Mistral short-range missile, mounted on a Nimr Hafeet 640A 6x6 all-terrain light-armoured vehicle.
MBDA said this combination would provide "an unmatched mobile air defence capability allowing protection of convoys, armoured brigades in their manoeuvres as well as any land infrastructure or assets."
"The two companies have already completed preliminary engineering studies and are in the stage of integrating the full system if ordered," it added.
The MPCS turret has a day/thermal sensor suite with a laser rangefinder, four ready-to-fire Mistral infrared guided missiles, and a 12.7 mm gun. MBDA says it can defeat high manoeuvring fighters, combat helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles at ranges exceeding 6 km and altitudes up to 5,000 m.
A single MPCS can operate independently or in combination with other systems and the radar-equipped Mistral Coordination Post (MCP) vehicle to provide an improved target acquisition capability. MBDA says a unit of six MCPs can engage up to 24 different targets coming from any direction in less than 20 seconds.
A MBDA official told IHS Jane's that the MPCS had already been integrated with a Mercedes chassis for Saudi Arabia and with a Renault vehicle for another customer that is not the French military.
Nevertheless, he added that there was still a significant amount of electrical and mechanical integration to be done on the Hafeet ADV.

IDEX 2015: Hydra undertakes first sea trials
Huw Williams, London - IHS Jane's International Defence Review
The Hydra is primarily intended for inshore operations. Source: Al Seer Marine/5G International
Al Seer Marine has conducted the first at-sea trials of its new Hydra unmanned surface vessel (USV).
The trials were held at the company's facilities in the United Arab Emirates.
Abu Dhabi-based Al Seer has developed the Hydra and other USVs in partnership with 5G International, a specialist in the field of marine robotics.
The new platform is an evolution of the Sea Serpent vessel, which, according to 5G International's chief executive officer Robert Murphy, was a test and evaluation platform.
Hydra features a bespoke hull design and is powered by a 1.8 litre, 4-stroke Yamaha engine that drives a waterjet and enables the USV to travel at speeds of up to 52 kt. A buoyancy aid helps provide extra stability to the vessel.
The 400 kg vessel is 4.2 m long with a 1.6-m beam and 0.3-m draft. It is equipped with an electro-optical camera system, radar, and forward-facing sonar. Al Seer's USV project manager Matthew Tracy explained that the company utilises commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components to be as flexible as possible in meeting a customer's requirements. Hydra's payload capacity is said to be 250 kg.
The Hydra has an endurance of 21.5 hours when operating at its sentry speed, Tracy said, adding that multiple vessels can be controlled at the same time and operate in a network with the ability to relay communications and extend a vessel's range.
Tracy said the development of the USV - which commenced around 12 months ago - has largely been straightforward. Special attention had to be paid to the packaging of the electronics systems, Murphy explained, noting that some of the technologies they leveraged are more typically used in the construction of submarines.
One challenge that the team faced was in integrating the engines control system within the wider infrastructure. Tracy explained that they had been unsuccessful in approaching Yamaha for the necessary technical data and instead used after-market components.
Tracy said that the COTS-based control station is capable, but noted that some changes will likely be made to the interface to make it more user friendly.
The Hydra is intended to be an inshore asset, Tracy said, providing capabilities such as harbour patrol or the protection of ships. Murphy highlighted other potential missions to include fisheries monitoring, oil and gas rig protection, and environmental monitoring via an onboard package that can sample water drawn through the waterjets with live telemetry sent to the control station. Two vessels could also work together to scan ships for nuclear material, Murphy explained, passing either side with onboard detection systems.
There are no confirmed military customers for Hydra yet. However, Murphy said that a vessel has been acquired to protect a private mega yacht.

IDEX 2015: FNSS lifts wraps on new Saber 25 turret
Christopher F Foss, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's International Defence Review
FNSS' latest Saber 25 turret is being shown for the first time at IDEX 2015, illustrated here with the ATK Armament Systems 25 mm M242 dual-feed cannon and 7.62 mm coaxial MG. Source: IHS/Patrick Allen
Turkey's FNSS Savunma Sistemleri launched its latest Saber 25 one-man medium-calibre turret at IDEX 2015.
Saber 25 has been in private development since late 2013, pulling through experience from the Sharpshooter Mk 1 and Mk 2 one-person turrets supplied to customers including Malaysia for some of its ACV-15 tracked vehicles. The latest order for Sharpshooter Mk 2 turrets to be installed on Malaysia's AV8 infantry fighting vehicles is soon to be completed.
The new design offers 60% more internal volume than the Sharpshooter Mk 1 and 2, but with less than a 10% increase in external dimensions. Saber 25 is made of all-welded aluminium armour with an appliqué composite and steel armour package claimed to provide ballistic protection to STANAG 4569 Level 4, and spall liners inside the vehicle.
Static unmanned firing trials of the Saber 25 commenced in mid-2014 and were completed by the end of the year, having undertaken static/static engagements and worked up to firing at mobile targets while on the move, completing development of the turret.
The Saber 25 turret shown at IDEX was armed with ATK Armament Systems' stabilised 25 mm M242 dual-feed cannon, backed up by a 7.62 mm co-axial machine gun (MG) plus banks of electrically operated grenade launchers. The latter are typically 76 mm grenades, but 66 mm or 81 mm are offered as an alternative.
The cannon has a total of 240 rounds of ammunition (150 high explosive and 90 armour piercing), the empty cases being ejected outside of the turret, while the 7.62 mm MG has 600 rounds ready to use. All-electric gun control equipment is fitted, along with a digital fire control system and ballistic computer.
The turret traverses through 360°, with weapon elevation from -7 to + 48°, and there is also the option of a deck-limitation device, which can be set for automatic or programmed restrictions.
On the demonstration model, the gunner's sight picture is generated by a Thales roof-mounted sighting system, which includes a third-generation long-wave or mid-wave thermal imager, telescopic day optical channel, eye-safe laser rangefinder, and a unity window for surveillance.
The turret also features a standard unity day observation periscope to the sides and rear.
UPDATE: IDEX 2015: Blue Arrow 9 further expands Chinese UAV weapon options
Richard D Fisher Jr - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
Norinco provided new details for its Blue Arrow 9 missile, seen here next to the larger Blue Arrow 7, during the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi. Source: Rick D Fisher Jr
China's promotion of domestic weapons competition has resulted in customers getting a wider choice of missiles for their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The two Chinese companies leading this competition are Norinco and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), which have unveiled several new missiles for UAVs in recent years.
Norinco's Blue Arrow 7 lightweight, air-launched, ground-attack missile was revealed in 2010. Later that year, the Blue Arrow 7, which weighs 47 kilogrammes and uses semi-active laser guidance, was seen integrated on the CAIC Z-10 attack helicopter and has subsequently been seen in use during People's Liberation Army exercises.
Norinco revealed its Blue Arrow 9 at Zhuhai 2014 airshow, but did not provide performance details until the IDEX 2015 in Abu Dhabi. At 26.5 kg, the much-lighter missile is the company's attempt to address the UAV weapons market. It uses a semi-active laser guidance system and has a range of 6 kilometres.
While it is not yet confirmed, the Blue Arrow 7/9 likely arms the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation Pterodactyl (Wing Loong) UAVs that have reportedly been sold to the United Arab Emirates.
CASC unveiled its first UAV missile, the AR-1, in 2008. The semi-active laser-guided missile can be used with CASC's CH-3, CH-3A, and CH-4 UAVs, which a Chinese source at IDEX said have been sold to around 5-10 countries.
While it has been test-fired 30-40 times, including from Chinese helicopters, the 8-10 km-range AR-1 is currently designed only for use with UAVs. Future plans include expanding the AR-1's seeker options to include infrared/TV imaging.
China's sale to Nigeria of CH-3 UAVs armed with AR-1 missiles was revealed recently when one of the aircraft crashed in late January, apparently during a sortie against the Boko Haram militant group in the northeast of the country.

SIHAM AL KHALEEJ TECHNOLOGY, MBDA and GEM present their coastal defence system at IDEX 2015
19/02/2015
At IDEX 2015, the UAE company Siham Al Khaleej Technology (SAKT), together with MBDA, the European missile systems company, and GEM elettronica of Italy, are presenting an innovative and cost-effective coastal battery system.
This cooperation is part of a Heads of Agreement signed during the 2013 Dubai Air Show that sees SAKT as the prime contractor and system integrator, MBDA as the supplier of the launchers and the launching systems for the Marte family of missiles and GEM as the coastal battery remote station system supplier.
The coastal defence system can provide both the surveillance of maritime coastal traffic and the interdiction of territorial waters to hostile ships and can launch two different missile options: Marte MK2/N, for those users wanting to control littoral waters at ranges out to 35 Km and Marte ER, for those customers needing to extend control out to a much greater range. The system can be connected through a data-link with an upper level of Command and Control (C2) and can be rapidly deployed anywhere along the coast and easily redeployed on small islands.
The Coastal Battery Remote Station (CBRS 100-MD) is a compact, shelter-contained system, capable of operating in all weather conditions, day or night. As an option, GEM is offering a TV/IIR capability to extend the overall identification performance.
The proposed system will be on display on the SAKT stand and represents the baseline configuration of a Coastal Defence System that satisfies the key requirements of Surveillance, Control and Protection of sea lines of communication as well as the protection of coastal assets.
The baseline is a very simple configuration with a minimum number of components (a high performance surface coastal radar, a shelter with C2 functions and associated equipment and a Marte missile launcher) and a low permanent crew requirement. Marte family missiles will be supplied directly by MBDA. http://www.mbda-systems.com/mediagallery/#/news/3469

IDEX 2015: CETC's O-Shield updates Bodyguard
Richard D Fisher Jr, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

The China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) used the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi to provide new details about a counter-precision guided munition (PGM) system that updates the nearly 20-year old Bodyguard system.
CETC's O-Shield Comprehensive Electro-Optical Defence System was first revealed at the November 2014 Zhuhai Airshow, but scant details were offered at that time. At IDEX, CETC officials told IHS Jane's that O-Shield, with the 'O' standing for 'optics', was an improvement on an older PGM-defence system called Bodyguard, which was developed in the late 1990s.
Both systems use a combination of smoke and dazzling lasers to provide point defence against laser-guided PGMs.
While Bodyguard used a towed chassis to carry a laser-warning device, smoke dispensers and a laser that is sufficiently powerful to dazzle the seeker on a laser-guided PGM, O-Shield has them on a mobile armoured chassis and most likely uses updated components. Another difference is that O-Shield has its lasers and the smoke dispensers on a turret.

IDEX 2015: UAE orders nine AW139 helicopters
Jeremy Binnie, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
A spokesman for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) military announced at the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi that it had ordered nine helicopters from AgustaWestland: six of them for search-and-rescue purposes and three for VIP transport.
AgustaWestland told IHS Jane's that all the helicopters would be its twin-engine AW139.

The China Shipbuilding and Trading Company (CSTC) used the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi to reveal a model of a new landing platform dock (LPD) that it could build for export.
A CSTC official told IHS Jane's that the concept was not developed to meet any current customer requirement, but was done to "show we have these capabilities".
The CSTC official could not confirm reports that China had offered a version of its Type 071 LPD in 2006 to meet a Malaysian requirement, but did not discount them.
CSTC's export LPD concept appears to be slightly smaller than the Type 071, the fourth of which was launched for the Chinese navy on 22 January. The model's vehicle and well deck contained 18 main battle tanks and 16 smaller utility vehicles.
Its hangar appears to hold two helicopters the size of the Changhe Z-8. Defensive armament included a 76 mm gun on the foredeck and two automatic cannon
