IDEX 2015: Hydra undertakes first sea trials
Huw Williams, London - IHS Jane's International Defence Review
The Hydra is primarily intended for inshore operations. Source: Al Seer Marine/5G International
Al Seer Marine has conducted the first at-sea trials of its new Hydra unmanned surface vessel (USV).
The trials were held at the company's facilities in the United Arab Emirates.
Abu Dhabi-based Al Seer has developed the Hydra and other USVs in partnership with 5G International, a specialist in the field of marine robotics.
The new platform is an evolution of the Sea Serpent vessel, which, according to 5G International's chief executive officer Robert Murphy, was a test and evaluation platform.
Hydra features a bespoke hull design and is powered by a 1.8 litre, 4-stroke Yamaha engine that drives a waterjet and enables the USV to travel at speeds of up to 52 kt. A buoyancy aid helps provide extra stability to the vessel.
The 400 kg vessel is 4.2 m long with a 1.6-m beam and 0.3-m draft. It is equipped with an electro-optical camera system, radar, and forward-facing sonar. Al Seer's USV project manager Matthew Tracy explained that the company utilises commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components to be as flexible as possible in meeting a customer's requirements. Hydra's payload capacity is said to be 250 kg.
The Hydra has an endurance of 21.5 hours when operating at its sentry speed, Tracy said, adding that multiple vessels can be controlled at the same time and operate in a network with the ability to relay communications and extend a vessel's range.
Tracy said the development of the USV - which commenced around 12 months ago - has largely been straightforward. Special attention had to be paid to the packaging of the electronics systems, Murphy explained, noting that some of the technologies they leveraged are more typically used in the construction of submarines.
One challenge that the team faced was in integrating the engines control system within the wider infrastructure. Tracy explained that they had been unsuccessful in approaching Yamaha for the necessary technical data and instead used after-market components.
Tracy said that the COTS-based control station is capable, but noted that some changes will likely be made to the interface to make it more user friendly.
The Hydra is intended to be an inshore asset, Tracy said, providing capabilities such as harbour patrol or the protection of ships. Murphy highlighted other potential missions to include fisheries monitoring, oil and gas rig protection, and environmental monitoring via an onboard package that can sample water drawn through the waterjets with live telemetry sent to the control station. Two vessels could also work together to scan ships for nuclear material, Murphy explained, passing either side with onboard detection systems.
There are no confirmed military customers for Hydra yet. However, Murphy said that a vessel has been acquired to protect a private mega yacht.

IDEX 2015: FNSS lifts wraps on new Saber 25 turret
Christopher F Foss, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's International Defence Review
FNSS' latest Saber 25 turret is being shown for the first time at IDEX 2015, illustrated here with the ATK Armament Systems 25 mm M242 dual-feed cannon and 7.62 mm coaxial MG. Source: IHS/Patrick Allen
Turkey's FNSS Savunma Sistemleri launched its latest Saber 25 one-man medium-calibre turret at IDEX 2015.
Saber 25 has been in private development since late 2013, pulling through experience from the Sharpshooter Mk 1 and Mk 2 one-person turrets supplied to customers including Malaysia for some of its ACV-15 tracked vehicles. The latest order for Sharpshooter Mk 2 turrets to be installed on Malaysia's AV8 infantry fighting vehicles is soon to be completed.
The new design offers 60% more internal volume than the Sharpshooter Mk 1 and 2, but with less than a 10% increase in external dimensions. Saber 25 is made of all-welded aluminium armour with an appliqué composite and steel armour package claimed to provide ballistic protection to STANAG 4569 Level 4, and spall liners inside the vehicle.
Static unmanned firing trials of the Saber 25 commenced in mid-2014 and were completed by the end of the year, having undertaken static/static engagements and worked up to firing at mobile targets while on the move, completing development of the turret.
The Saber 25 turret shown at IDEX was armed with ATK Armament Systems' stabilised 25 mm M242 dual-feed cannon, backed up by a 7.62 mm co-axial machine gun (MG) plus banks of electrically operated grenade launchers. The latter are typically 76 mm grenades, but 66 mm or 81 mm are offered as an alternative.
The cannon has a total of 240 rounds of ammunition (150 high explosive and 90 armour piercing), the empty cases being ejected outside of the turret, while the 7.62 mm MG has 600 rounds ready to use. All-electric gun control equipment is fitted, along with a digital fire control system and ballistic computer.
The turret traverses through 360°, with weapon elevation from -7 to + 48°, and there is also the option of a deck-limitation device, which can be set for automatic or programmed restrictions.
On the demonstration model, the gunner's sight picture is generated by a Thales roof-mounted sighting system, which includes a third-generation long-wave or mid-wave thermal imager, telescopic day optical channel, eye-safe laser rangefinder, and a unity window for surveillance.
The turret also features a standard unity day observation periscope to the sides and rear.
UPDATE: IDEX 2015: Blue Arrow 9 further expands Chinese UAV weapon options
Richard D Fisher Jr - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

China's promotion of domestic weapons competition has resulted in customers getting a wider choice of missiles for their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The two Chinese companies leading this competition are Norinco and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), which have unveiled several new missiles for UAVs in recent years.
Norinco's Blue Arrow 7 lightweight, air-launched, ground-attack missile was revealed in 2010. Later that year, the Blue Arrow 7, which weighs 47 kilogrammes and uses semi-active laser guidance, was seen integrated on the CAIC Z-10 attack helicopter and has subsequently been seen in use during People's Liberation Army exercises.
Norinco revealed its Blue Arrow 9 at Zhuhai 2014 airshow, but did not provide performance details until the IDEX 2015 in Abu Dhabi. At 26.5 kg, the much-lighter missile is the company's attempt to address the UAV weapons market. It uses a semi-active laser guidance system and has a range of 6 kilometres.
While it is not yet confirmed, the Blue Arrow 7/9 likely arms the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation Pterodactyl (Wing Loong) UAVs that have reportedly been sold to the United Arab Emirates.
CASC unveiled its first UAV missile, the AR-1, in 2008. The semi-active laser-guided missile can be used with CASC's CH-3, CH-3A, and CH-4 UAVs, which a Chinese source at IDEX said have been sold to around 5-10 countries.
While it has been test-fired 30-40 times, including from Chinese helicopters, the 8-10 km-range AR-1 is currently designed only for use with UAVs. Future plans include expanding the AR-1's seeker options to include infrared/TV imaging.
China's sale to Nigeria of CH-3 UAVs armed with AR-1 missiles was revealed recently when one of the aircraft crashed in late January, apparently during a sortie against the Boko Haram militant group in the northeast of the country.

SIHAM AL KHALEEJ TECHNOLOGY, MBDA and GEM present their coastal defence system at IDEX 2015
19/02/2015
At IDEX 2015, the UAE company Siham Al Khaleej Technology (SAKT), together with MBDA, the European missile systems company, and GEM elettronica of Italy, are presenting an innovative and cost-effective coastal battery system.
This cooperation is part of a Heads of Agreement signed during the 2013 Dubai Air Show that sees SAKT as the prime contractor and system integrator, MBDA as the supplier of the launchers and the launching systems for the Marte family of missiles and GEM as the coastal battery remote station system supplier.
The coastal defence system can provide both the surveillance of maritime coastal traffic and the interdiction of territorial waters to hostile ships and can launch two different missile options: Marte MK2/N, for those users wanting to control littoral waters at ranges out to 35 Km and Marte ER, for those customers needing to extend control out to a much greater range. The system can be connected through a data-link with an upper level of Command and Control (C2) and can be rapidly deployed anywhere along the coast and easily redeployed on small islands.
The Coastal Battery Remote Station (CBRS 100-MD) is a compact, shelter-contained system, capable of operating in all weather conditions, day or night. As an option, GEM is offering a TV/IIR capability to extend the overall identification performance.
The proposed system will be on display on the SAKT stand and represents the baseline configuration of a Coastal Defence System that satisfies the key requirements of Surveillance, Control and Protection of sea lines of communication as well as the protection of coastal assets.
The baseline is a very simple configuration with a minimum number of components (a high performance surface coastal radar, a shelter with C2 functions and associated equipment and a Marte missile launcher) and a low permanent crew requirement. Marte family missiles will be supplied directly by MBDA. http://www.mbda-systems.com/mediagallery/#/news/3469

IDEX 2015: CETC's O-Shield updates Bodyguard
Richard D Fisher Jr, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
The O-Shield is an update of the China Electronic Technology Group Corporation's Bodyguard laser/smoke PGM defense system from the late 1990s. Source: Richard D Fisher Jr
The China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) used the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi to provide new details about a counter-precision guided munition (PGM) system that updates the nearly 20-year old Bodyguard system.
CETC's O-Shield Comprehensive Electro-Optical Defence System was first revealed at the November 2014 Zhuhai Airshow, but scant details were offered at that time. At IDEX, CETC officials told IHS Jane's that O-Shield, with the 'O' standing for 'optics', was an improvement on an older PGM-defence system called Bodyguard, which was developed in the late 1990s.
Both systems use a combination of smoke and dazzling lasers to provide point defence against laser-guided PGMs.
While Bodyguard used a towed chassis to carry a laser-warning device, smoke dispensers and a laser that is sufficiently powerful to dazzle the seeker on a laser-guided PGM, O-Shield has them on a mobile armoured chassis and most likely uses updated components. Another difference is that O-Shield has its lasers and the smoke dispensers on a turret.

IDEX 2015: UAE orders nine AW139 helicopters
Jeremy Binnie, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
A spokesman for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) military announced at the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi that it had ordered nine helicopters from AgustaWestland: six of them for search-and-rescue purposes and three for VIP transport.
AgustaWestland told IHS Jane's that all the helicopters would be its twin-engine AW139.

The China Shipbuilding and Trading Company (CSTC) used the IDEX show in Abu Dhabi to reveal a model of a new landing platform dock (LPD) that it could build for export.
A CSTC official told IHS Jane's that the concept was not developed to meet any current customer requirement, but was done to "show we have these capabilities".
The CSTC official could not confirm reports that China had offered a version of its Type 071 LPD in 2006 to meet a Malaysian requirement, but did not discount them.
CSTC's export LPD concept appears to be slightly smaller than the Type 071, the fourth of which was launched for the Chinese navy on 22 January. The model's vehicle and well deck contained 18 main battle tanks and 16 smaller utility vehicles.
Its hangar appears to hold two helicopters the size of the Changhe Z-8. Defensive armament included a 76 mm gun on the foredeck and two automatic cannon

IDEX 2015: Local contender enters Emirati 8x8 race
Mohammed Najib, Abu Dhabi and Jeremy Binnie, Abu Dhabi - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

The new Enigma infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) that was unveiled at IDEX 2015 in Abu Dhabi will be submitted for the Emirati military's long-standing 8x8 IFV requirement, IHS Jane's has confirmed.
Mohamed bin Jabr al-Suwaidi, CEO of Emirates Defense Technology (EDT), which is developing the Enigma, said the vehicle had been developed specifically for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Army. This was the reason why the vehicle displayed at IDEX was fitted with the turret from the BMP-3 tracked IFV that is currently in service with the UAE Army, he added.
"Next summer the UAE will conduct more tests on the new vehicle," confirmed Suwaid. "We focused our production on the hot climate and the movement of Engima in the desert."
Powered by a Caterpillar C13 diesel engine developing 711 hp, the Enigma will have a typical combat weight of 28 tonnes. It uses a Timoney Technology suspension system that provides a high level of cross-country mobility and is designed to be easily replaced if damaged by mines or improvised explosive devices.
Its V-shaped hull is made from all-welded armour and can be fitted with appliqué armour for a higher level of protection.
While the vehicle displayed at IDEX had the BMP-3 turret, EDT says the vehicle's modular design means it can be fitted with a wide range of weapons. A model was displayed at IDEX showing an Enigma carrying the BAE Systems 155 mm M777 lightweight howitzer.
Other options being considered include the Rheinmetall 35 mm Skyranger air-defence turret and the UralVagonZavod 37 mm AU220M remote turret.
In the IFV role the Enigma will be able to carry eight dismounts and three crew and will be fully amphibious.
COMMENT
Although reports of a local contender for the 8x8 requirement emerged at IDEX 2013, the unveiling of the Enigma will have demoralised the other companies in the competition, which has been ongoing since at least 2007, when Patria first displayed a version of its AMV 8x8 fitted with a BMP-3 turret. The other main contender is believed to be Nexter's VBCI.
Indeed, the fact that the Enigma was unveiled at IDEX by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE's military, suggests it has high-level of political support.

UAE Contract Awards Favor Joint Ventures
ABU DHABI — At this year's International Defence Exhibition, United Arab Emirates-based defense companies received the lion's share of the contract awards announced by the country's armed forces.
Of a total of 33 contracts worth $4.99 billion, Emirates-based companies received 21 worth $3.81 billion, French companies received deals worth $1.03 billion, and US companies came in third with $676 million, including a $618 million order for two Boeing C-17s.
Many of the contracts went to joint-venture partnerships between UAE and foreign firms. This is no coincidence, said IDEX spokesman Maj. Gen. Obeid al-Kitbi.
"We have a clear strategy to establish strong relationships with specified companies in this field and set up joint ventures with companies to achieve our goals," al-Kitbi said. "Based on the vision set out by the Deputy Supreme Commander Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, our industry is getting stronger and we are investing in the future to have a strong industrial base in the UAE."
Abu Dhabi's Nimr Automotive this year received a $330 million order for five variants of their AJBAN four-wheel-drive vehicles plus upgrades to 500 Nimr vehicles currently in service with UAE armed forces across the country.
Based on South African designs, the Nimr vehicles are an example of a successful joint venture. In 2013, UAE ordered 1,800 vehicles from Nimr, which also notched sales that year to Libya and Lebanon, while deals for manufacturing were made in Algeria and Jordan.
Another example is Tawazun Dynamics, which makes the Al Tariq air-to-ground precision guided weapon. A partnership between Tawazun and South Africa's Denel this year received a $416 million contract to supply precision-guided ammunition. UAE firms Milipol International and the International Golden Group both have partnerships with international companies to provide munitions and howitzers.
Meanwhile, AMMROC, a joint venture between Lockheed, Sikorsky and Emirates Defence Industries Co., has signed deals worth over $620 million this year.
Giving contracts to companies with a foot in the UAE "provides more opportunities for research-and-development funding that is unburdened by export restrictions and accumulate to become a formula for success," said aerospace and defense expert Aleksander Jovovic, with Washington-based Avascent.
"Companies that are hungry for research-and-development funding and have no export restrictions that are ready to export and open up foreign markets are going to be a good partner, but if any of those three points are more difficult it would turn customers like the UAE away," Jovovic said. "When you look at what those guys have, they don't normally have a large export base while compared to other countries where it would be a worry to give away intellectual property rights."
The magic formula, he said, is to create with someone else in your industry but not create competition.
Jovovic added that while those with insufficient internal R&D funding, few export restrictions and a keen desire to export typically due to lean domestic markets can prove to be strong partners, the question remains: Do those partners bring the best technology or can those foundations be made best-in-class with additional investment?
"As usual, the likely answer is sometimes yes but often no. Then the question is whether that 'sovereign' [UAE] control over the technology is important enough to sacrifice some operational to include lack of interoperability with allies or technological capabilities," he said. http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense/policy-budget/industry/2015/03/01/united-arab-emirates-contract-idex-nimr-uae/24129813/
