Four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 missiles at the position of the terrorist group Islamic State in Syria, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced. The missiles were fired from the Caspian Sea. The missile attacks came from Russia’s fleet in the Caspian Sea, near the northern coast of Iran. The precision weapons hit all intended targets. The attacks apparently required cooperation from Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to travel through their airspace to reach Syria. Earlier, Russian warships played a key part in deploying the Russian warplanes to Syria, delivering equipment and supplies to an air base near Latakia and the Navy’s old base in Tartus. Russia has spent a week delivering airstrikes at terrorist forces in Syria, conducting over 120 combat sorties. Now the Navy is joining Russia’s Air Force in the operation.

Si l’aviation russe ne vise pas principalement les positions de l’État islamique (EI ou Daesh) en Syrie, il n’en reste pas moins que l’espace aérien syrien est actuellement très encombré. Et il le sera d’autant plus à l’avenir étant donné que la coalition internationale emmenée par les États-Unis envisage d’y intensifier ses frappes contre les jihadistes, comme l’a indiqué le lieutenant-général Charles Brown, qui dirige les opérations aériennes américaines.

D’ailleurs, ce dernier a indiqué que les avions américains et russes évoluent parfois dans des secteurs très proches. Un drone de l’US Air Force a ainsi été approché de près par un appareil russe et une vingtaine kilomètres ont récemment séparé deux F-16 basés à Incirlik (Turquie) ont côtoyé des Su-34 « Fullback » dans un rayon d’une trentaine de kilomètres.

Pour éviter des malentendus, voire même de frapper au même endroit, le Pentagone fait des propositions à Moscou afin de coordonner les actions des uns et des autres. Propositions qui ont été « examinées en profondeur », a assuré, le 7 octobre, le général Igor Konachenkov, un porte-parole du ministère de la Défense.

« Le ministère russe de la Défense a répondu aux demandes du Pentagone et examiné en profondeur les propositions américaines sur la coordination des opérations (menées) dans le cadre de la lutte contre le groupe terroriste Etat Islamique sur le territoire syrien » a en effet affirmé le général Konachenkov, cité dont les propos ont été rapportés par les agences de presse russes.

« Globalement, ces propositions peuvent être mises en place », a-t-il poursuivi. « Nous essayons seulement de clarifier de notre côté certains détails techniques qui seront discutés aujourd’hui entre des experts du ministère russe de la Défense et ceux du Pentagone », a encore précisé le porte-parole.

Ces déclarations ont été faites alors que la Turquie a protesté contre la violation, à deux reprises, et malgré les avertissements d’usage, de son espace aérien par deux avions russes, dont un Su-30 SM et un bombardier Su-24.

Depuis le 30 septembre et le début des opérations en Syrie, l’aviation russe a effectué des frappes sur 112 cibles, principalement contre les groupes rebelles actifs près de la région de Lattaquié, l’un des derniers fiefs du régime syrien, les raids contre l’État islamique (EI ou Daesh) ayant nettement moins nombreux.

En outre, le ministre russe de la Défense, Sergueï Choïgou, a indiqué, ce 7 octobre, que 4 croiseurs de la flottille de la Caspienne avaient tiré une salve de 26 missiles de croisières sur 11 cibles. Ces dernières, a-t-il assuré, ont toutes été détruites avec une « précision de moins de 3 mètres ».

Les missiles en question ont parcouru près de 1.500 km pour atteindre leurs cibles (ateliers de fabrication d’explosifs, entrepôts de munitions, des camps d’entraînement) après avoir survolé l’Iran et l’Irak. L’on aurait pu s’attendre à ce que les navires russes actuellement en exercice en Méditerranée orientale soient sollicités pour de telles frappes.

Cela étant, comme pour la coalition anti-Daesh dirigée par les États-Unis, l’efficacité des frappes aériennes est remise en cause si ces dernières n’appuient pas des forces terrestres. Tout au plus permettent-elles de ralentir, voire de freiner, la progression d’un adversaire, comme cela a été le cas en 2014 quand l’EI était en phase de conquête dans le nord de l’Irak. Et ce n’est pas parce que des raids aériens sont menés par des avions russes que cela change quoi que ce soit.

D’où la déclaration faite ce jour par le président russe, Vladimir Poutine. Les prochaines opérations militaires russes en Syrie « seront synchronisées avec les opérations terrestres de l’armée syrienne, et les forces de l’armée de l’air (russe) soutiendront de manière efficace l’offensive de l’armée syrienne », a-t-il dit, lors d’un passage à la télévision.

Ces propos ont été tenus quelques heures après que l’Observatoire syrien des droits de l’homme (OSDH) a affirmé que des avions russes appuyaient un assaut des « forces du régime », c’est à dire l’armée syrienne et les milices chiites qui la soutiennent, dans l’ouest de la Syrie.

Russia's KAB-250 guided bomb to complete trials this year

Region JSC's KAB-250 precision-guided munition (PGM) will soon complete trials, Igor Krylov, director general of Region JSC (a subsidiary of Tactical Missiles Corporation, KTRV), told IHS Jane's at the Russian Defence Ministry Innovation Day 2015.

Krylov also stated that there are two versions of the 250 kg Korrektiruyemaya Aviatsionnaya Bomba (KAB): a laser-guided version (the KAB-250LG-E) and the GLONASS/INS-guided KAB-250S-E. Its circular error probable (CEP) for ground targets is 3-5 m.

The KAB-250 is a follow-on to the larger KAB-500 PGM, which made its combat debut in September in Syria.

"The bomb is in trials on the Sukhoi Su-34 [Fullback], with the trials to be completed late this year," said Krylov.

The KAB-250LG will enter the weapons suite of the PAK FA fifth-generation fighter in 2016, he noted. The KAB-250LG-E can be employed both by 4/4+ generation fighters from external hardpoints or by the PAK FA in its internal weapons bays, according to Krylov.

According to Krylov, the KAB-250 was developed in response to the development of the Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) by the United States to equip its F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighters.

The KAB-250 has a fragmentation warhead designed to destroy lightly vulnerable materiel, thin-skinned vehicles, and other enemy installations. The bomb can be dropped individually or in salvoes. The aircraft carrying the KAB-250LG-Es must be fitted with a laser illumination system or the target can be illuminated by a forward air controller.

The KAB-250LG-E's total weight is 256 kg, with a warhead of 165 kg and explosive weighing 96 kg.

The bomb is 3.2 m long, with a diameter of 255 mm and a wingspan of 550 mm. It has a complex, compact tail design and is fitted with four long-chord, short-span wings to increase its glide range. Drop altitude is 1-10 km, aircraft drop speed is 200-350 m/s.

Russian Navy demonstrates cruise missile capability with Syria strikes

Russia displayed its long-range cruise missile capability for the first time on 7 October, when it announced that warships on the Caspian Sea hit militant targets in Syria using Kalibr missiles.

The attack was first announced by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in a televised conversation with President Vladimir Putin. "This morning, ships from the Caspian Flotilla were brought in. Four destroyers launched 26 Kalibr cruise missiles at 11 targets," he said. "The results of the strikes confirmed the high effectiveness of the missiles at long range, almost 1,500 km."

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) then released a video showing a Gepard-class frigate and at least one Buyan-M-class corvette launching several missiles in sequence at night.

La présence de plusieurs acteurs n’ayant pas les mêmes intérêts, objectifs et affinités, si ce n’est leur volonté de voir tomber le régime de Bachar el-Assad, complique singulièrement la donne en Syrie.

S’il est beaucoup question de l’État islamique (EI ou Daesh) en raison de ses récentes conquêtes dans l’est de la Syrie, il ne faut pas oublier le front al-Nosra, c’est à dire la branche syrienne d’al-Qaïda, alliée au groupe salafiste « Ahrar Al-Cham », et l’Armée syrienne libre, soutenue par les Occidentaux. Et l’on pourrait également citer les milices kurdes de l’YPG, en pointe contre les jihadistes de Daesh.

Du côté du régime de Bachar el-Assad, l’on trouve des milices chiites venues d’Irak, du Liban (Hezbollah) et même d’Afghanistan, des conseillers militaires iraniens ainsi que, désormais, un important détachement des forces aériennes russes.

Depuis le 30 septembre, jour où ces dernières ont entamé leurs opérations en Syrie, le président russe, Vladimir Poutine, a affirmé qu’au moins 112 cibles avaient été visées.

Or, quand on regarde les zones qui ont fait l’objet de raids aériens, l’évidence saute aux yeux : l’État islamique a été relativement épargné par les bombardement russes étant donné qu’il n’était pas ou peu présent dans les secteurs visés.

Au 7 octobre, seulement 6 positions de l’EI ont ainsi été frappées par les bombardiers russes. Quant à celles du Front al-Nosra, c’est plus difficile à déterminer dans la mesure où ses combattants sont imbriqués avec ceux d’autres factions.

Cependant, la province d’Idlib a particulièrement été visée. Or, l’on y trouve les combattants de « l’armée de la conquête », qui rassemble à la fois des rebelles salafistes d’Ahrar Al-Cham, des jihadistes d’al-Nosra et des groupes affiliés à l’ASL.

Toujours est-il que, pour Washington, les raids aériens russes ont épargné l’EI et al-Nosra. « Plus de 90% de leurs frappes auxquelles nous avons assisté n’ont pas été contre l’EI ou des terroristes affiliés à Al-Qaïda. Elle ont été en grande partie contre des groupes d’opposition », a ainsi assuré John Kirby, un porte-parole de la diplomatie américaine.

C’est la première fois que les États-Unis donnent ainsi une estimation chiffrée des conséquences de l’intervention de la Russie en Syrie. Le ministre britannique de la Défense, Michael Fallon, s’était risqué dire, la semaine passé, que seulement 5% des frappes russes visaient l’EI.

« Notre inquiétude réside davantage dans l’impact de l’activité militaire à l’intérieur de la Syrie (…) à l’encontre de groupes qui ne sont ni l’État islamique ni les terroristes affiliés à Al-Qaïda », a souligné M. Kirby.

Quoi qu’il en soit, le chef d’état-major de l’armée syrienne, le général Ali Abdallah Ayoub, n’a évidemment pas la même perception. « Les frappes russes en Syrie ont permis d’affaiblir l’organisation extrémiste Etat islamique (EI) et d’autres groupes armés, de même qu’elles ont aidé les forces du régime sur le terrain », a-t-il dit, ce 8 octobre.

« Après les frappes aériennes russes qui ont diminué la capacité de combat de l’EI et des autres groupes terroristes, les forces armées syriennes ont gardé l’initiative militaire », a encore affirmé le général Ayoub, avant d’annoncer le début, ce jour, d’une grande offensive terrestre « en vue d’écraser les groupes terroristes et libérer les régions et les localités qui ont souffert du terrorisme et de ses crimes ».

Cette offensive a pour objectif la plaine de Sahl al-Ghab et probablement la ville de Jisr al-Choghour, conquise cet été par les rebelles syriens, dont ceux du Front al-Nosra, afin d’écarter tout menace sur la province de Lattaquié, l’un des derniers bastions du régime de Bachar el-Assad.

The TREKOL 39274 is an ATV on pneumatic low pressure propelling devices designed for year-round cargo and passenger transportation in different driving conditions on roads of I – V categories and off-road, mostly on dirt roads, on cohesive soils including virgin snow, sand, thawing tundra soil and bogs, capable to overcome the small water obstacles afloat.

The chassis blocks are unified with the UAZ vehicles. The ATV’s construction is front-motored. There are two side, one rear door and two emergency vent hatches in the roof.

Optionally an ATV may be equipped with restarting preheater, electric winch, independent saloon heater, centralized tire inflation system, transom for outboard motor installation, brackets for the transportation of four additional 20 liters cans, side glazing with sliding vents, removable table installed in the passenger compartment and soft-side seats, which can be transformed into four comfortable beds.

Russia’s Machine-Building Enterprise Muromteplovoz is ready to deliver 150 fire support and escort fighting vehicles to Arctic brigades within a year and a half, Enterprise CEO Yevgeny Tretyakov said at the ‘Innovation Day of the Russian Defense Ministry 2015’ exhibition.







We are ready to build up to one hundred vehicles annually using our production facilities. Thus, a brigade-size set will be manufactured within a year and a half. The vehicle has already passed trials. The commanders of Arctic brigades are satisfied with its configuration. Now, it is up to the Russian Navy to take the decision about its entry into service," Tretyakov said.

Muromteplovoz is testing a family of armored vehicles on the MTLBu tracked chassis designed for Arctic brigades and Northern Fleet coastal defense forces.

The Toros fire support and escort fighting vehicle, armed with the 2A42 30mm automatic gun, the PKTM 7.62mm machinegun and the AG-17 automatic grenade launcher, was shown at the ‘Innovation Day’ exhibition. The vehicle has a maximum speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). It is capable of negotiating water obstacles at a speed of 4- 6 km/h (2-4 mph). The vehicle is equipped with swamp tracks and a grader. The Toros fire support and escort fighting vehicle has the TKN-4GA day/night sight.

The family of armored vehicles on the MTLBu tracked chassis also comprises a self-propelled artillery system equipped with the 2A60 120mm rifled semiautomatic gun, the 2B14 82mm mobile mortar system, a medical evacuation vehicle, a command vehicle, an aircraft and electronic warfare control system and radars.

Muromteplovoz says that it is ready to start the serial production of vehicles on the MTLBu tracked chassis for Arctic units at any moment.

According to Mr. Kayumov (at present he is the Counselor to the President of United Aircraft Corporation), the completion of Tu-214VPU’s assembly is the primary objective of KAPO. It must be noted that the information related to a tender for certification of Tu-214VPU was posted at the website dedicated to state orders on September 6th 2013. The procedure must be completed by December 31st 2013. The cost of certification is 115 thousand rubles. Moreover, a number of contracts with KAPO have been approved by the latest meeting of the Board of Directors of Tupolev Company. In particular a number of agreements related to repair, upgrade and maintenance of Tu-22M3 aircraft have been approved. Four contracts related to maintenance and supply of spare parts for Tu-160 have also been approved at the meeting.

Mechanized infantry units of the Russian military base in the Republic of Abkhazia have received some 30 advanced BTR-82AM armored personnel carriers, the press service of the Southern Military District said on Friday.




MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The BTR combat vehicles, delivered to the base by rail, include improved armor, Glonass navigation systems, 2A72 30mm cannon coupled with an upgraded 7.62mm machine gun, and have a more powerful 300hp engine.
"The BTR-82AM is a significantly modernized version of BTR-80 and BTR-80A armored personnel carriers. It is superior to its predecessors in literally all characteristics," the press service said.

The Russian Air Force in Syria has destroyed about 100 militants and an ammunition depot near the Syrian city of Aleppo over the past 48 hours, the deputy chief of the Russian General Staff said on Friday, October 9, 2015. "A strike was delivered on a base of gunmen and an ammunition depot in the building of a former prison near Aleppo. About 100 militants and a depot were destroyed as a result," Igor Makushev said.


He also said a terrorist training base was destroyed in air strikes in a mountain-woody area in Latakia Province.

"In the first footage you can see an air strike on a terrorist training base, spotted in a mountain-woody" in Latakia. The camera of a drone fixed air bombs hitting the base, as a result of which the target was destroyed," he said.

Makushev also demonstrated the footage showing a strike on a training camp for terrorists in Idlib Province, saying the bombs hit the target, and munitions exploded destroying it completely.

He also showed footage with a strike on a fortified area of terrorists and a strike on an Islamic State base in a woodland area.

Russian fighter jets have also destroyed the stronghold of Liwa al-Haqq group in Syria and eliminated two field commanders of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization and around 200 militants by guided bombs, Igor Makushev told journalists.

"A stronghold of Liwa al-Haqq group was destroyed after being directly hit by high-precision KAB 500-S bombs. According to intercepted radio signals, two leading field commanders of ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant - former name of IS] and around 200 militants were destroyed by airstrikes," Makushev said.

Makushev added that Russian fighter jets made 67 sorties and delivered airstrikes at 60 terrorist positions over the last 24 hours.

Modernized Su-24M and Su-25 fighter jets are deployed in the aviation unit of Russia’s Aerospace Defense Forces formed in Syria, Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told journalists earlier. He stressed that all strikes were made after air reconnaissance and update of data obtained from the Syrian army headquarters. Aircraft armaments were not used to hit civil infrastructure facilities or areas near them.

Russian army reconnaissance units in Siberia now equipped with BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle.

The Russian Army Central Military District (CMD) reconnaissance units stationed in Siberia have been rearmed with BMP-3 combat vehicles, the district press service reported.


"The modernized combat vehicles will come to replace the in-service BTR-80, BMP-1 and BMP-2," the press service said.

The CMD did not specify how many vehicles have been made available to the reconnaissance troops.

It was previously reported that by the end of 2017 the MoD would receive over 200 BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles. Besides, the vehicle is actively promoted to the foreign market. For instance, Iraq and Saudi Arabia plan to acquire soon around 1.5 thousand BMP-3s /respectively, 500 and 950 machines.

The BMP-3 is tracked armoured infantry fighting vehicle designed and manufactured by the Russian Companies OAO Kurganmashzavod and by Tractor Plants Concern.

The BMP-3 is armed with one 2A70 semi-automatic 100mm cannon capable of launching 9M117M1anti-tank guided missiles (Arkan code name), one 2A72 automatic 30mm cannon and one PKT 7.62mm machine guns.

The BMP-3 can run at a maximum speed on 70 km/h. The vehicle is fully amphibious and can swim on water at maximum speed of 10 km/h. The BMP-3 has a weight of 18.7 tons and has a crew of three. The troops compartment can accommodate seven men.

Now in development are new modifications of the BMP-3, as the Derivatsiya fitted with a 57mm automatic gun in an unmanned combat module and the Dragoon with a new layout. In addition, the Tractor Plants Concern has outfitted the combat vehicle with a digital fire control system (FCS) enabling the vehicle to be subsequently robotized.

Servicemen of the NBC regiment jointly with NBC elements of the motorized rifle and tank units within the combined-arms formation located in the Republic of Buryatia started performing practical tasks within the complex tactical exercise on industrial disaster management at a chemical facility.

In the course of the training activity, the military personnel marched to the assigned district, deployed field mobile complexes and laboratories. The servicemen will have to act under the conditions of conventional contamination dispersal, to carry out localization and liquidation of consequences at a chemical facility.

The exercise involves over 400 servicemen and about 50 automobile vehicles as well as special equipment.

Attack and bomber aviation of the Eastern MD engaged ground targets at four aviation ranges

Attack and bomber aviation of the Eastern MD Air Force and Air Defence formation has performed tactical training flights eliminating different types of ground targets at four specialized ranged of the Eastern MD in the Republic of Buryatia, the Khabarovsk Krai and the Primorsky Krai.

In the course of the training flights, pilots of Su-24M2 and Su-25SM practiced bombing and launched unguided air rockets at targets, which imitated bases, depots and underground command centers of imaginary enemy.

The main objective of these flight training activities is improvement of pilots’ “toss bombing” skills.

In the course of this maneuver, the attacking aircraft pulls upward when releasing its bomb.

The combat training involves over 300 servicemen and up to 30 aircraft.

Nouvelle livraison de Su-34 !



Moscou, la société Sukhoi a confirmé avoir remis un autre lot de Su-34 « Fullback » au Ministère de la Défense de la Fédération de Russie. L'avion a décollé de l'aérodrome de la VPChkalov Novosibirsk Aircraft s’est dirigé en direction de son lieu de leur déploiement tenu confidentiel.

Cette nouvelle livraison confirme le bon fonctionnement de la chaine d’approvisionnement qui s’étant, selon les commandes actuelles jusqu’en 2020 et garantit une charge de travail stable pour l’avionneur Sukhoi. En parallèle à cette livraison, l’avionneur a fait état du très bon fonctionnement du Su-34 notamment avec les aéronefs engagés en Syrie. Ceux-ci se montrent particulièrement efficace pour traquer les forces rebelles au sol, tout en ne demandant qu’un entretien léger et ceci malgré les conditions particulières du théâtre d’opération syrien.

Le Su-34 peut attaquer des cibles terrestres, maritimes et aériennes, de jour comme de nuit et par tous les temps, en utilisant l’ensemble des types de munitions en service en Russie. En termes de capacités opérationnelles, il s'agit d'un appareil de génération 4+. Son système de sécurité active avec les nouveaux ordinateurs, fournit des capacités supplémentaires pour le pilote et le navigateur, pour effectuer des bombardements précis et à manœuvrer sous le feu ennemi. L’excellente aérodynamique de l’avion, les grands réservoirs de carburant de capacité interne, la nouvelle génération de moteurs plus économe en carburant, doté d’une commande numérique. Font que le Su-34 de bombardement tactique, se trouve très proche de la catégorie de bombardier stratégique de classe moyenne.

Le Su-34 dispose également d’un système de communication et le système d'échange d'informations de type liaison16 (Link16) lui permettant une interface avec des troupes terrestres et des navires de surface, ainsi qu’avec d’autres aéronefs.

Question armement, le Su-34 met en oeuvre des missiles à longue portée air-surface et air-air ainsi que d'armes guidées multicanal. Il est équipé d'un système de contre-mesures de dernière génération. Rappelons que le cockpit est blindé. L'avion peut effectuer des missions à basse altitude de type « by-pass et fly-by». A noter, que les pilotes disposent d’un petit cabinet WC, pour les longues missions.

L’avion a des capacités de lutte antinavire et dispose d’un rayon d'action de 4.000 km, sa vitesse maximale.

It was never about hitting the target in the most cost-effective manner. It was all about sending a message to the US, that the Russian Navy has the capability to attack targets thousands of kilometers away using cruise missiles. Also by sending their smallest warships to launch these powerful missiles, they wanted to show that even their 1000 ton ships pack a very powerful punch and shouldn’t be discounted as insignificant.

No. A single US Navy Arleigh Burke class destroyer can carry 96 Tomahawk cruise missiles if required, whereas Russia has around 8-10 warships that can carry 8 Kalibr missiles each. Since the US Navy has over 60 such destroyers, their land attack capability is 60 times greater than Russia’s. Interestingly, Russia doesn’t have a single destroyer in service which can carry the Kalibr-NK missile. This means that Russia’s power projection ability is limited to its immediate surroundings.

Une part non négligeable de la flotte russe de la mer Noire a fait, la semaine dernière, son entrée en Méditerranée avec la projec­tion symbolique et dissuasive de son fleuron le croiseur de classe Slava, le “Moskva”, doté des fameux missiles surface-air S-300P. Il serait accompagné de deux frégates de classe Krivak, d’un destroyer de classe Kashin, de deux bâtiments amphibies, le “Nikolay Flichenkov” et le “Saratov”, ainsi que de plusieurs patrouilleurs qui ont franchi récemment le détroit du Bosphore (lire l’article “Région Sud : le nouveau dispositif russe”).

Positionné au nord-ouest de la côte syrienne, le “Moskva” offre une capacité antiaérienne d’alerte avancée, complétant ainsi efficacement le dispositif de missiles sol-air courte portée positionné sur la base aérienne de Lattaquié. Il s’était illustré pendant la crise ukrainienne en retenant bloquée toute la flotte ukrainienne sous la menace de son feu. Deux frégates multirôles chinoises type 054, la “Linyi” et la “Weifang”, accompagneraient le groupe naval russe. Rappelons qu’au cours du seul mois de septembre, 18 bâtiments de guerre russes ont franchi le détroit du Bosphore.

Ainsi, Moscou n’en finit pas de surprendre les coalisés de l’Alliance atlantique. Située à 2 000 km à l’est de la Syrie, la flotte de la mer Caspienne a surpris le dispositif de veille mis en place par les forces djihadistes. Ce sont 26 missiles de croisière Kalibr-Nk visant onze cibles différentes qui ont été tirés en profondeur depuis la mer intérieure, à partir de la frégate de classe Gepard “Dagestan”, des corvettes de classe Buyan-M “Grad Sviyazhsk”, “Veliky Ustyug” et “Uglich”. Le Kalibr-Nk est une version évoluée du missile Klub qui a traversé à basse altitude le territoire iranien, puis irakien, démontrant, de fait, l’étendue de la coopération entre le Kremlin et ses alliés chiites.

Plusieurs vidéos diffusées sur YouTube tendent à démontrer qu’une base de Mi-24 est désormais opérationnelle à proximité de Homs, soit à 200 km du sanctuaire russe de Lattaquié, afin de réaliser des opérations antiguérilla. La base de Lattaquié s’est vue renforcée, ces derniers jours, d’un dispositif de roquettes longue portée et de 26 avions de combat supplémentaires. Considérant désormais l’espace aérien syrien comme partie inté­grante de son premier cercle, trois drones Predator américains ont été interceptés en pleine opération de surveillance au-dessus de Raqqa, Alep et Kobané.

Mais surtout de considérables moyens de rensei­gne­ment électronique sont en cours de déploiement. Au moins un qua­drimoteur Ilyouchine 20M, doté de moyens d’imagerie optronique et radar SLAR mais surtout d’une forte capacité de recueil ELINT, vient d’arriver sur le théâtre syrien au profit de l’armée de l’Air russe. En parallèle, le 5 octobre la Marine russe faisait appareiller depuis Kaliningrad l’un des fleurons de ses navires de renseignement élec­troni­que, le “Vasiliy Tatischev”, long de 100 m et d’un déplacement de 3 500 tonnes. Il aura la charge de surveiller, grâce à ses moyens Elint et Comint, l’ensemble de l’espace aérien syrien.

La surveillance des communications adverses est, elle, assurée par le “Centre S”, situé près de la ville de Al-Hara et opéré par le service d’écoute du GRU, l’Oznaz, en coopération avec les renseigne­ments militaires syriens. Les carac­téristiques des antennes déployées semblent démontrer que les forces russes ne se contente­ront pas de surveiller le territoire syrien mais pourraient étendre leur moni­toring jusqu’au Golfe persique et Israël en appui des milices chiites.

Two Project 21631 Buyan-M Corvettes to Join Russian Navy Following Acceptance Trials - TASS

Two Project 21631 Corvettes (Russian type classification small missile ships), the Zelyony Dol and the Serpukhov. According to the Russian Navy, both vessels designed by the JSC "Zelenodolsk design bureau" and built by the Gorky shipyard of Zelenodolsk in Tatarstan, will complete in November the acceptance trials and go into service with the Russian Navy.


The Buyan-M Corvette "Uglich" launches a 3M-54 Kalibr anti-ship missile during maneuvers in the Caspian Sea.


Both ships are currently at the Novorossiysk naval base which provides all the stages of trials at the marine combat training range. The acceptance commission will test the corvettes, comprehensively checking their quality and compliance with the approved project specifications. The ship crews underwent training at the Navy’s unified training center.

It is planned to build a total of 10 corvettes based on the improved Project 21631 Buyan-M. The corvettes Zelyony Dol and Serpukhov are the fourth and fifth ships of that series. The first three Project 21631 ships, Grad Sviyazhsk, Uglich and Veliky Ustyug, are in the Caspian Flotilla inventory. On October 7, together with the Project 11661K Gepard class corvette Dagestan, they participated in strikes, from the Caspian Sea, against the Islamic State terrorist organization’ facilities in Syria.

Unlike Project 21630 corvettes, those of Project 21631 feature an almost twice as large displacement (1,100 tons) and a strike missile armament: Kalibr-NK missile system (NATO reporting name SS-N-27 Sizzler). This system’s missiles are placed in a 3S14 eight-container vertical launcher. The Kalibr-NK system strikes with cruise missiles at seaborne (3M-54 missiles) and land-based (3M-14 missiles) targets. With a crew of 52 sailors and officers it navigates on its own up to 10 days to a range up to 2,500 miles. The class is also fitted with 100-mm and 30-mm guns, as well as Igla-1M air defense missiles.

Russian air defense units based on the Alexandra Land island of Russia’s northernmost Franz Josef archipelago are fully combat-ready, Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Vladimir Korolyov said on Monday, Oct. 19, 2015. "The air defense units on combat duty in Russia’s northernmost point are fully combat-ready and able to accomplish assigned missions," the Fleet’s press office quoted the commander as saying.



Large-scale construction of an up-to-date hi-tech military installation in under way on the Island to accommodate units of various services and branches, the Fleet’s commander said.

"No one has implemented projects like this at such a high latitude before and the contractor building the installation on the island is constructing virtually all the facilities ahead of schedule," Korolyov said.

Units of the Northern Fleet’s air defense division took up combat duty on the Alexandra Land Island in November 2014. The units’ personnel is now stationed at a temporary garrison. The servicemen go on combat duty at a duty shift building, which has been already constructed and meets all necessary requirements.

An up-to-date closed-cycle administrative and housing facility, which will occupy a total area of 14,000 square meters, is being built now. The construction of military facilities on the Alexandra Land Island is expected to be completed as early as in 2016.

In April, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to develop a single basing system for new-generation surface ships and submarines, strengthen the border and establish a new governmental body for pursuing Russia’s policy in the Arctic.

In particular, the 99th tactical group is based on Kotelny Island and the 80th separate motor-rifle brigade is stationed in the settlement of Alakurtti in the Murmansk Region in Russia’s extreme north-west.

Radar posts and air direction centers are to be deployed on the Alexander I Island of the Franz Josef archipelago, Novaya Zemlya archipelago, Wrangel Island and Cape Schmidt. The Federal Security Service’s coastal defense troops are planned to be strengthened as well.

The reconstruction of air defense infrastructure on Arctic islands is to be completed by October 2015. A self-contained force will be formed in the Arctic in 2018, the press office said.

Russian airborne troops will receive new VERBA MANPADS portable air defense system end of 2015

By the end of 2015 the Airborne Forces will receive two divisional sets of the newest Verba man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), Yevgeny Meshkov, MoD Airborne Forces official revealed.The system is designed and manufactured by the Russian Company Konstruktorskoye Byuro Mashinostroyeniya (KBM).


"In addition to the new MANPADS with a increased firing capability and a unique guidance system, the Airborne Forces will receive compact low-altitude radar target detectors and the latest automatic reconnaissance systems," Meshkov said.

The new Verba MANPADS will be deployed to the 76th guards assault (Pskov) and 106th guards airborne (Tula) divisions. The Verba MANPDS was accepted for service by the Russian army in 2015.

The 9K333 Verba MANPADS design employs for the first time a three-spectrum homing head for the 9M336 air defense guided missile operating in ultraviolet, near-infrared /NIR/ and MWIR regions. This novelty makes it possible to obtain more information about the target. In designing the latest MANPADS special attention was given to issues related to enhancing the homing head sensitivity. This eases the engagement of an aerial target in the frontal arc, increasing the effective range of acquiring an enemy flying vehicle.

In addition, this novelty extends the MANPADS operating range against low-emission targets such as the US AH-64 Apache combat helicopter of various models. The Verba MANPADS has an improved extended range guidance system. Also, it has received an identification friend-or-foe /IFF/ interrogator. Verba is integrated with the Barnaul-T control system which enables it to receive external target designation.
