Turkey To Unveil Its First Electric Armored Vehicle At IDEF-2019
11:15 AM, April 25, 2019
Akrep II (image: Anadolu Agency)
Turkish firm Otokar has developed a new electric armored vehicle christened “Akrep II” that will be unveiled at IDEF-2019 exhibition to be held between April 30 and May 3, 2019 in Büyükçekmece, Turkey.
“It is the country’s first domestically developed electric-powered armored combat vehicle. The vehicle will be tested soon. It will be ready for purchase within a year,” Daily Sabah reported quoting the company’s chairman Serdar Görgüç as saying Wednesday.
According to Görgüç, the vehicle is designed with both electric and diesel motors. "An all-electric version will be introduced and that the diesel version will be ready for purchase within one year," he added.
The low vehicle height of the Akrep II offers advantages against anti-tank threats while it can also provide support for close combat troops on the ground.
"The range of the vehicle which has places for a battery in both its front and back can be also increased with additional batteries according to the customer requests," Görgüç said.
He said that the vehicle takes three hours to recharge after the batteries are completely drained.
Akrep II was designed as a modular platform so that it could be adapted to different tasks. The range of the vehicle is currently 250 kilometers (155 miles). “The range can be increased with energy-intensive new batteries,” he added.
The new vehicle is designed to meet a Turkish Army requirement.
A new armored vehicle will replace the Cobra and Akrep I armored vehicle in reconnaissance missions.
The baseline version of the Akrep II vehicle provides all-around protection for the crew against small arms rounds and artillery shell splinters. Addition of slat armor gives some degree of protection against rocket-propelled grenades. Also is expected that this new vehicle withstands anti-tank mine blasts under the wheels.
This armored scout car can be fitted with remotely controlled weapon station, armed with small- or medium-caliber gun. Lighter versions, armed with shielded 7.62-mm, 12.7-mm machine guns or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher are also available.

IDEF 2019: Aselsan AKKOR Active Protection Systems for ALTAY
(Image: Arda Mevlutoglu via Armored Geek)
As the operational use of main battle tanks (MBT) in low itensity mobile and even urban operations has accelerated over the last decade or more, so, too, have the threats these vehicles must face. Traditional passive armour has become inadequate for MBT self-protection, particularly against rockt propelled grenades (RPG) and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM).
Recognising this, Aselsan began work on active protection technologies and developed the PULAT system, in a very compressed time period, as its first foray into this domain. It has successfully defeated hundreds of RPG and ATGM in qualification trials and has been integrated onto Turkish Army M60T tanks. One of the few active protection systems (APS) currently available, PULAT has significantly increased survivability of Turkish MBTs, according to the company. Story on PULAT on KAPLAN here.
Going a step further, the company has also been developing its next APS solution, designated AKKOR, specifically for the ALTAY MBT. Building on the capabilities of PULAT, AKKOR provides protection against asymmetric threats by extending the response mechanisms to include soft kill functions. Currently undergoing field tests, AKKOR is to be delivered to the Turkish Army integrated with the ALTAY as the first series production tanks begin to roll off the production lines.

Turkey's First Main Maintenance Factory Directorate displayed the New Generation T-155 Firtina self-propelled howitzer (SPH) for the first time at the IDEF defence exhibition in Istanbul, taking place between 30 April and 3 May.
According to officials representing the directorate, the Turkish Army has signed a contract for serial production of the vehicle pending a final series of tests.
Turkish company Aselsan is one of the leading subcontractors for the project and provided a new fire control system (FCS) for the vehicle. Aselsan stated in a press release that development of the NG Firtina was initiated as a result of feedback from recent Turkish operations in cross-border and 'counter-terror' operations.
Externally the most notable change from the original Firtina SPH is the installation of a SARP remote weapon station (RWS) from Aselsan on the roof of the vehicle.
According to Aselsan representatives, the RWS serves the dual role of being a close-range weapon for engagements against infantry as well as functioning as a direct-fire sight for the 155 mm main ordnance.
Additionally, the SPH's gun control equipment has been converted from a hydraulic to an all-electric system, designed to improve crew safety and maintenance. The loading system, which was semi-automatic on the original Firtina, has been upgraded to an entirely automated system, which also allows the gunner to select from any one of four ammunition types at will.
Furthermore, the ammunition system is modified to introduce temperature-controlled stowage and a vacuum system intended to improve the safety of the stored charges.
The temperature of the propellant is fed into the Aselsan FCS to provide a more accurate ballistic solution.
Situational awareness for the crew of four is improved through the addition of personal consoles, as well as a driver's vision system with thermal and daylight channels.

Oui. Mobilité, puissance de feu, manque une paire d ATGM pour traiter les cibles lourdement blindées et on à un bon concurrent pour remplacer les AML voir AMX-10RC.
Mille Merci jf16 pour le suivi

FNSS revealed its combat engineering variant of the Pars III 8×8 armoured vehicle, which was developed specifically to meet the requirements of Oman, at the 2019 IDEF exhibition.
The vehicle is undergoing qualification tests for Oman and is expected to complete all testing by mid-2019, at which point deliveries are expected to commence.
The contract with Oman covers delivery of 172 Pars III vehicles in 13 configurations. Of those vehicles, 145 will be based on the 8×8, and the remaining 27 on the 6×6 variants.
The contract for the combat engineering variant covers eight vehicles. It is designed to perform a number of combat engineering operations including mine clearance, obstacle clearance, obstacle creation, and constructing bases and defences. It is crewed by a driver/operator, commander, gunner, and four dismounts. The vehicle is based on the standard 8×8 Pars III.
FNSS has worked in collaboration with UK-based Pearson Engineering to develop and integrate mission-specific equipment onto the vehicle, which is designed to be rapidly dismounted and swapped for other systems as the situation dictates.
The engineering functionality is provided by a Pearson Universal Connection Kit (Jettison Kit) that is fitted to the front of the vehicle. The Jettison Kit employs existing Pearson technology to enable the rapid changing of attachments, but is customised to fit the Pars III. Gökhan Tekin, Oman Pars III WAV programme manager, explained that the front attachment can be changed in five minutes by a single crew member - using the vehicle to move from attachment to attachment, and no specialist tools or crane are required. He added that this can be reduced to four minutes with two crew members.

IDEF 2019: Pulat APS displayed on M60 main battle tank
Christopher F Foss, Istanbul - Jane's International Defence Review
08 May 2019
To meet a Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC) urgent operational requirement, Aselsan has developed the Pulat hard-kill active protection system (APS) that leverages technology from the Zaslon - Light (Zaslon-L) APS developed in Ukraine.
Pulat APS is to be installed on TLFC M60TM main battle tanks (MBTs) that were previously upgraded under an earlier urgent requirement for deployment on the Turkish border.
The example of the M60TM, shown at IDEF 2019 in Istanbul, was also fitted with an Aselsan telescopic mast-mounted sighting system on the left side of the turret with a stabilised sensor pod including day charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, thermal camera, and a laser rangefinder. It also had an Aselsan camera suite to provide situational awareness through 360°.
Pulat consists of a power distribution unit (PDU), control panel, and a so-called anti-threat module (ATM) that consists of a millimetre-wave radar and anti-threat munition.
Aselsan has not released detailed technical capabilities of its Pulat APS.
The original Zaslon-L from the Ukraine, however, is claimed to provide 80% protection against rocket-propelled grenades with a single HEAT warhead, 80% against rocket-propelled grenades with a tandem HEAT warhead, 80% against all types of anti-tank guided weapon, 70% against artillery projectiles with a calibre of up to 125 mm, and 60% against tank-fired armour-piercing projectiles with a calibre of up to 125 mm with a maximum velocity of up to 1,200 m/s.
Method of operation is the same as Zaslon in that the radar detects the incoming threat and, when within range, the cylindrical munition is activated and neutralises the threat using a dense cloud of fast-moving splinters.
The number of ATMs depends on the size of the platform, but to provide an MBT with 360° protection would typically require up to six modules
