A joint shooting exercise between Jordanian and French forces took place on the 1st and 2nd of April 2013 on the military camp of Al Humaïma, 60 km north of the port of Aqaba. The joint exercise, Mercy, put into action the entire French Army tactical group (GTE) onboard the BPC Tonnerre, 200 legionnaires and 50 vehicles, as well as two Gazelle and a Puma ALAT helicopters. The Jordanian side deployed a section of the Jordanian Armed Forces 61st Special Forces Battalion and their armored Humvees.
United States to send 200 soldiers to Jordan to help Jordanian army United States Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told Congress on Wednesday, April 18, 2013, that the Pentagon is sending about 200 soldiers from an Army headquarters unit to Jordan to assist efforts to contain violence along the Syrian border and plan for any operations needed to ensure the safety of chemical weapons in Syria.

US DoD to deploy army contingent to Jordan 19 April 2013 The US Department of Defense (DoD) will deploy an army headquarters unit to assist Jordanian armed forces in safeguarding their border with Syria, US defence secretary Chuck Hagel has revealed.
Reporting to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Hagel said the contingent would bolster efforts of a small US military team that has been working to prevent the spillover of Syrian chemical weapons and violence across Jordanian borders since late 2012.
"Personnel will continue to work alongside Jordanian armed forces to improve readiness and prepare for a number of scenarios," Hagel said.
The US military and its interagency partners are providing training and equipment to Amman to detect any chemical weapons transfers along Jordan's border with Syria, and also to develop the country's capacity to identify and secure chemical weapons assets. Valued at around $70m, the initiatives form part of the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency's (DTRA) cooperative threat reduction programme, which also includes the provision of support to Turkey, Iraq and other Syrian neighbours to counter threats posed by the regime's chemical weapons.
Updating on the Syrian crisis, Hagel said the Pentagon is currently engaged in robust military planning with allies and partners for a range of contingencies involving Syria, and is strategically positioned in the region.
However, the defence secretary did warn Congress against direct US military intervention in the Syrian conflict, saying the move could bring the country into a broader regional conflict or proxy war.
Calling a negotiated, political transition through further isolation of the Assad regime and support to the Syrian opposition coalition as the best outcome for the country, Hagel also noted the provision of $117m funding in non-lethal assistance, including communications and medical equipment to the coalition.
As well as offering $385m for alleviation of humanitarian crisis, the US has also helped more than one million Syrian refugees who have migrated to neighbouring countries since the crisis began in 2012.

Black Hawk helicopters fit for Jordanian king April 23, 2013 By Ms. Kim C Gillespie (USASAC)
Foreign military sales are based on processes, promises and people. And the Security Assistance Command used all three to complete a delivery of two UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters with a special configuration for Jordan, ending a case that began with the country's initial request in 2006.
"The aircraft were delivered to the Royal Jordanian Air Force on April 1 at Marka Air Force Base, Amman, Jordan," USASAC's Jordan country program manager Ed Gray said. "The two UH-60M aircraft were flown from Sabreliner Corp., in Perryville, Mo., where they were loaded on an UAE C-17 cargo aircraft at St. Louis Mid America Airport and flown to Jordan."
The timeline for FMS cases extends from cradle to grave. And ensuring that international partners get the materiel and the capability they need requires not only USASAC but an enterprise of people with expertise to sustain the process and the promise.
"AMCOM (Aviation and Missile Command) SAMD (Security Assistance Management Directorate) was tasked to develop the case in coordination with PEO (Program Executive Office) Aviation's Utility Helicopter Project Office," Gray said.
The original Letter of Offer and Acceptance was for two UH-60 aircraft to be specially outfitted as required by Jordan.
"However, decisions on configuration and model -- L versus M -- delayed program milestones/delivery schedules," Gray said. The upgrade to UH-60M aircraft required amended congressional notification which was completed in June 2008, and requirements were finalized and the amendment for the specially configured "M" models were implemented in October 2010.
But the special configuration of the aircraft required additional industry coordination by another organization, AMRDEC's Prototype Integration Facility.
"Sikorsky delivered two UH-60M 'Green' aircraft and Sabreliner was contracted through the PIF to complete the special configuration," Gray said.
Gray, who has worked as the Jordan country program manager since 2012, emphasized that the importance of this delivery is more than just equipment delivery because of the longstanding relationship between the U.S. and Jordan.
"The Jordanians wanted the best helicopters in the world so they purchased these for use by the Jordanian Royal Air Force," he said. "And these are fit for a king , a Jordanian king."

Jordan military plane crash kills two pilots
A Jordanian air force plane on a training flight crashed on Thursday due to a technical failure, killing the pilot and a train, an official in the armed forces’ general command said in a statement.
“At 6:55 a.m. (0355 GMT) on Thursday morning one of the training planes, a Firefly, at the King Hussein air force college (in Mafraq, in northern Jordan), crashed in a training area to the west of the college after a technical failure during a routine training flight," the statement said.
The source added that the pilot and the trainee on board both died in the accident.
The last incident of this kind took place in January 2012, when a Jordanian military pilot was killed after his aircraft crashed on a training flight due to a technical failure.

Dutch Cheetah air defence guns sold to Jordan
11 March 2013 - 16:42 by Pieter Bastiaans in Breda
The Netherlands and Jordan have struck a €21 million deal that will see 60 surplus Cheetah air defence systems being transferred to the Jordanian armed forces.
The agreement also includes the delivery of Cheetah spare parts, some 350,000 rounds of surplus ammunition and technical documentation. In addition, five Leopard 1 armoured recovery vehicles will be handed over to Jordan together with the hulls of 12 non-refurbished PRTL air defence systems and two Leopard 1 main battle tanks (MBT), which will be used for spare parts.
Eleven Thales Nederland Flycatcher Mk1 mobile radar fire control systems and 22 40mm Bofors L/70 guns are also included in the deal.
The Dutch Ministry of Defence will provide assistance with training and deliveries will commence in 2014.
The Cheetah is the Dutch variant of the German Gepard twin 35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) and is based on a slightly-modified Leopard 1 tank chassis.
Produced by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), the mobile air defence system is equipped with independent search and tracking radars, a search radar (S-band for the German vehicle and X-band for the Netherlands vehicle) installed at the rear of the turret, and a tracking radar (Ku band for the German vehicle and X/Ka band for the Netherlands) on the front of the turret.
The Dutch MoD acquired five pre-production and 95 production PRTLs, the last of which was delivered in 1979. In 1995 it was decided to refurbish 60 PRTLs, the first of which was redelivered in 1998. The upgrade programme was a bilateral effort with the German army concurrently refurbishing 147 of their Gepards.
The upgraded air defence gun was known as Cheetah in Dutch military service and its service life was planned to continue until 2015. However, due to a realignment of Dutch ground based air defence forces, the Cheetahs were withdrawn from service in 2007 and stored under the auspices of the Dutch Defence Material Organisation.
Germany phased out its last Gepards in 2010. Romania received 43 former German army Gepards in 2004 and Chile bought 30 in 2008. The latter deal was later cancelled due to high overhaul costs. In late 2012, another 36 upgraded Gepards were sold to Brazil.

His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan inaugurated the new plant that will produce the RPG-32 anti-tank grenade launcher.
Jordan opens new factory to produce RPG-32 Hashim Nashab anti-tank grenade launcher. His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan on Thursday, May 30, 2013, inaugurated the JADARA Equipment and Defence Systems Company’s (JRESCO) factory where the anti-tank weapon RPG-32 Hashim will be produced. The company is a subsidiary of King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau’s (KADDB) Investment Group (KIG), the investment arm of the bureau. The ceremony was attended by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Hussein and Prince Feisal. His Majesty King Abdullah II and Russian Technologies CEO Sergei Chemezov attended the factory’s inauguration.
“The RPG-32 is one of the most advanced weapon systems in the world able of effectively engaging the majority of armored vehicles as well as other military targets,” Chemezov said at the opening ceremony.
The joint venture to manufacture RPG-32 Hashim launchers is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Jordan’s capital, Amman. It has been built and equipped by the Jordanian side, whereas Russia’s Rosoboronexport, part of Russian Technologies, is supplying components for the assembly of the grenade launchers and is overseeing the production process.
The King unveiled the commemorative plaque, toured the assembly line of the “Nashab” and attended a live firing of JADARA’s RPG-32 to illustrate the functions of the weapon, “which is highly efficient in penetrating armoured vehicles and destroy bunkers”, the statement said, adding that another major feature is that it can be fired from semi-confined spaces. “Nashab, which is used by the infantry troops, is prone to improve the combat capabilities of the armed forces.”
The RPG-32 “Nashab” is also expected to be favoured by the armies of the region as it is considered an upgraded version with highly advanced features of previous models of RPGs. The export procedures of such a weapon comply with UN rules in this regard to guarantee the transparency of the process, according to the statement. http://www.armyrecognition.com/june_2013_news_defence_security_industry_military/jordan_opens_new_factory_to_produce_rpg-32_hashim_nashab_anti-tank_grenade_launcher_0206131.html
