ATK Completes First Flight Test of its Light Gunship for Kingdom of Jordan
Modifications Completed for Jordan's King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) CASA-235 Military Transport Aircraft
ATK (NYSE: ATK), a leader in weaponized, special-mission aircraft, announced it has completed the first flight test for the Kingdom of Jordan's two CASA-235 light gunship aircraft. ATK was awarded a contract by King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) of the Kingdom of Jordan to modify two of the country's CASA-235 transport aircraft into highly-capable and cost-effective special mission aircraft.
With modifications and ground testing complete, ATK began the flight test program to validate the installed weapons and gun system. Upon successful completion of the test program, the aircraft will be delivered to the Kingdom of Jordan to support the mission of the Jordanian Armed Forces.
"We are pleased that KADDB has selected ATK to provide this unprecedented capability to the Jordanian Armed Forces," said Bill Kasting, vice president and general manager of ATK's Defense Electronic Systems division. "This program will provide the Kingdom of Jordan with the first multi-mission gunship capability in the region. The start of the flight test is a major milestone achievement by the ATK and KADDB team."
In collaboration with KADDB, ATK developed and provided the system integration and aircraft modifications to turn a CASA-235 cargo plane into a multi-mission gunship. These modifications include installation of an electro-optical targeting systems, a laser designator, aircraft self-protection equipment, a synthetic aperture radar, and an armaments capability that can provide sustained and precise firepower in a variety of scenarios using Hellfire laser-guided missiles, 2.75-inch rockets, and a side-mounted M230 link-fed 30mm chain gun. The gun is automatically aligned to the target, cued by a camera in conjunction with the mission management and fire control solution. These capabilities are integrated with and controlled by ATK's Mission System, which provides both day and night reconnaissance and fire control capabilities, and the ability to acquire, monitor and track items of interest.
The gunship capability package is part of ATK's Special Mission Aircraft product portfolio, which provides affordable, responsive and advanced capabilities to customer-preferred platforms. ATK's expertise includes outfitting various aircraft – including the Alenia C-27J, CASA CN-235/295, Lockheed C-130, Bombardier Dash-8, Hawker Beechcraft King Air, Cessna Caravan and others – with integrated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and weapons employment capabilities.
About KADDB The King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) was established by Royal Decree on August 24, 1999 to provide an indigenous capability for the supply of independent, high quality, efficient and cost-effective scientific and technical services to the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF). KADDB is an independent government entity within the JAF that acts as the Jordanian research and development facility created to provide a one-stop solution for the supply of defence and commercial equipment. KADDB aims at harnessing science and technology to fulfil Jordan's defence needs and, in the process, assist the nation in creating a sustainable defence industrial base. News and information can be found on the Internet at www.KADDB.com.
About ATK ATK Defense Group is an industry leader in providing innovative and affordable ammunition, precision and strike weapons, electronic warfare systems, and missile components across air-, sea-, and land-based systems.

The Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) has ordered four multi-purpose armoured platform (MAP) armoured personnel carriers (APCs), Jordanian defence sources have told IHS Jane's . The MAP was developed by the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) from the hulls of the JAF's retired Tariq (Centurion) main battle tanks (MBTs) to create a vehicle with better protection than the M113 APCs currently used by the JAF. KADDB has also developed other variants including mortar and ammunition carriers. "KADDB has transformed ex-JAF MBTs into an APC with extra armour and lower costs," KADDB CEO Shadi Majali told IHS Jane's . "We removed the turret, widened the APC by more than 45 cm, put in front and rear doors, and armoured it to be stronger than the M113." Jordanian defence sources said the four MAPs will be converted by Jordan Manufacturing and Services Solutions (JMSS), a KADDB subsidiary, and are expected to be delivered by June 2014, after which they will be used to support a mechanised battalion. More MAPs are expected to be ordered in the future. The APC variant can carry two crew and 11 fully equipped dismounts, who can enter the APC either through the rear or the front ramp door. The Royal Jordanian Army has also shown serious interest in JMSS-modified Scorpion light tanks and Scimitar reconnaissance vehicles, which have new Steyr diesel engines and, in the latter's case, a new 30 mm gun, as well as new fire control and surveillance systems. These would be used to protect air force bases. According to KADDB sources, Jordan is set to buy about 80 Italian Iveco 105 mm Centauro tank destroyers by June 2014. The vehicles will be rebuilt and requalified by KADDB for the JAF as part of a project that will take between two and three years.
FIDAE 2014: Jordan to receive two CN235 gunships in coming months

Alliant Techsystems (ATK) plans to soon deliver to the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) two Airbus Military CN235 twin-engine transport aircraft that it has modified into light gunships.
ATK is converting the transport platforms into gunships under a contract from the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB), and both are to be delivered in the coming months, Dave Sharpin, vice-president for strategy and business development at ATK, told IHS Jane's on 28 March at FIDAE 2014 in Santiago, Chile.
One of the aircraft is to be displayed at the Special Operations Forces Exhibition and Conference (SOFEX) in Jordan in early May 2014, he said.
The modification adds weapons pylons to the aircraft that mount laser-guided AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles and 2.75 inch (70 mm) rocket pods. The airship is also fitted with ATK's M230LF 30 mm link-fed chain gun on its side, Sharpin said.
Other systems integrated on the aircraft include electro-optical targeting systems, a laser designator, AAR-47/ALE-47 aircraft self-protection equipment, and a synthetic aperture radar, according to an ATK factsheet.
An ATK Mission System is used to manage day and night reconnaissance and fire control capabilities, as well as the platform's ability to acquire, monitor, and track targets. The side-mounted M230LF can automatically align with a target after being cued by a camera and mission management and fire control software.
