Euronaval Video: SH Defence Unveils Cutting Edge Equipment ‘The Cube’

Warship today, minesweeper tomorrow, humanitarian aid vessel next week: Danish company SH Defence unveils a new cutting-edge equipment solution that allows Navy and Coast Guard vessels to change purpose in less than 4 hours – without costly rebuilding between missions.

Yannick Smaldore  24 Oct 2020

SH Defence press release

Flexible and cost-efficient

Modern naval vessels must be capable of carrying out different missions and roles in both peacetime and wartime. This calls for solutions that enables them to quickly adapt to any new mission without a costly rebuild. A challenge the Danish company SH Defence, one of the leading providers of custom-made equipment and retrofit solutions for navy vessels, has solved in a simple, yet powerful way.

They have developed a flexible and cost-efficient modular equipment solution, that enables a vessel to act as warship on one mission, minesweeper on another – and humanitarian aid vessel (or any other role) on a third. It’s named The Cube, referring to the innovative shell carrying the equipment.

“Traditionally naval vessels are built to serve one single purpose. But a fleet consisting of fixed-purpose vessels is both inflexible and extremely costly to modify in today’s world. We are changing that course by making it fast and easy to exchange equipment of any vessel and thereby making it multi-functional. Vessels prepared for The Cube can carry out any mission.”

René Bertelsen, Director of SH Defence

128+ standard modules

The Cube is a modular equipment to customize Navy and Coast Guard vessels. SH Defence image.

The Cube consists of 128+ standard modules that fulfill common demands. But it is also possible to order custom-made modules that fit specific needs. The innovative shell is designed to protect the equipment and ensure it is fully reliable and operating seamlessly in both arctic areas and regions with extreme heat. All equipment is tested and proven and already in use by naval vessels worldwide.

Mission-ready in 4 hours

The modules fit ISO-standard container footprint sizes 20’ to 40’ and can easily be transported overland by train or truck or via airplane. There is no need for special transports. Furthermore, the equipment can be quickly exchanged in any harbor and only requires a flat loading surface. And once onboard the modules are “plug and play” ready to use.

“Due to the easy logistics and the quick and cost-efficient exchange of function, the vessel is literally mission-ready within hours”, says René Bertelsen. He also points out that any vessel can benefit from the system.

Fits any vessel

SH Defence the CUBE aboard FASSMER OPV

“For maximum cost-efficiency and optimal use The Cube system the vessel should be designed as new build or retrofitted/rebuilt to fit the unique equipment solution. We have started to work with shipyards and design companies to integrate the Cube system on their vessels and are looking for more partners. But even fixed-purpose vessels can benefit from the modular system, if container fittings are installed on open deck. The Cube multipurpose system comes in more than 128 different modules, module loaders and mission bay doors that fit the chosen size of modules.”

The Vigilante CL75 Mk II offers an impressive range, a heavy weaponry and the ability to operate multiple drones/RHIBs.

Euronaval: CMN unveils a new generation of Vigilante OPVs

French shipyard CMN unveils a new generation of OPV, the Vigilante Mk II. It will replace the successful Vigilante family on the export market. They are available in several variants, from 45 to 75 meters long, and they will fulfill both littoral and oceanic missions. Designed for modern naval warfare, they feature an hybrid propulsion and they will be able to operate a whole range of drones.

Yannick Smaldore  25 Oct 2020

The new range of CMN OPV (called VIGILANTE Mk II) is designed with an inverted sharp bow combined with a slender bulb. It provides the vessel with the following enhancement:

•Improved seagoing capabilities with a smoother passage through waves,
•Increased waterline length and then hydrodynamic performances (at equal exposed deck length),
•Reduced fuel consumption,
•Increased visibility from the bridge,
•Reduced bow flare slamming,
•Reduced structural stresses and fatigue,
•Better crew comfort and safer working conditions,
•Increased firing arc of the main gun.

More firepower for the Vigilante Mk 2

The Vigilante Mk II will be able to answer a large range of missions, including anti-smuggling patrols, fisheries policing, rescue at sea, humanitarian aid, EZZs protection, anti-pollution, special forces deployment and maritime/coastal intelligence.

Facing the proliferation of crises zones all around the world, CMN designed the Vigilante Mk II as truly armed ships, in order to provide an efficient protection against every known and foreseeable threats. Alongside the 20mm and 30mm guns very common on light OPVs, the largest Vigilante Mk II options will be able to receive a 40mm or 76mm gun as main artillery. CMN has a long history of heavily armed OPVs, which should continue with the Vigilante Mk II.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) - Page 2 10a58
The first generation of Vigilante OPVs is already an industrial success for CMN. With Vigilante Mk2, the French Shipyard intends to answer new
operational needs.

Light surface-surface missiles and anti-air missiles can also integrate the ship’s combat system. Missiles like MBDA’s MMP and Mistral 3, or Thales’ LMM Martlet could be serious options.

All the new Vigilante Mk II designs will operate at least two RHIB and UAVs. The bigger variant can accommodate up to three RHIB (including two 9m long on an aft ramp). Its helicopter platform will be compatible with 10 tonnes helicopters.

Vigilante CL45 Mk II

The smallest version of Vigilante Mk II is the CL45. With a length of 45,6 meters, it can accommodate 27 sailors and passengers. Maximum speed on diesel engine is 22+ knots, while a hybrid mode allows a 7 knots silent speed. Range at 12 knots will be 2500NM.

The main weapon will be a 20mm gun, completed with two machine guns. At the rear of the ship, the standard mission equipment consists of a RHIB fitted on a side davit and a modular area able to carry containers.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) - Page 2 1066
In this configuration, the CL45 Mk II is equipped with a 6,5m RHIB on a starboard davit, and another one on an aft ramp. But the rear part of
the ship is a modular area. Equipment can thus be adapted to customers’ needs.

CMN presented two configurations of the CL45 Mk II: one with a rear ramp for a 6,5m RHIB, and another with a rear platform for small UAV like the Schiebel Camcopter S.100. In that case, a second davit it installed in order to keep the dual RHIB provision. But we can easily imagine that a customer can ask for three RHIB on davits and ramp. Or for a second main weapon (light gun or anti-air missile launcher for example) at the rear of the ship.

Vigilante CL55 Mk II

Vigilante CL55 Mk II is 9 meters longer than its little brother. The bigger displacement allows a maximum crew of 41, while the autonomy is increased to 3500NM.

Main weapon system can know accommodate a 40mm gun. Equipped with a radio direction finder, the CL55 Mk II is able to conduct low level ISTAR operations (intelligence, surveillance, targeting, acquisition & reconnaissance).

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) - Page 2 981
On the CL55 Mk II, the rear part of the ship can be adapted to increase either the storage, RHIB or UAV capacities. The overhaul configurations
are similar on the CL45 Mk II, but with smaller RHIBs.

The rear modular zone is almost identical than the CL45 one. It has either a UAV platform or an aft ramp for a RHIB. Being longer, the CL55 Mk II can accommodate 9m long RHIB, against the 6,5m long on the CL45 Mk II. On the front upper deck, the CL55 Mk II integrates a catapult for fixed winged UAVs.

Vigilante CL65 Mk II

The new CL65 Mk II is a fully versatile and compact multi-mission OPV with embedded UAVs (VTOL and/or fixed winged). It also presents a dual RHIB ability. The overall length is 64,8m. At 7 knots (hybrid propulsion), the range is 7500NM. At a cruise speed of 12 knots, the range will be of 5500NM, giving it an oceanic patrol range similar to that of a light frigate.

Contrary to the lighter models, CL65 Mk II permanently retains a large UAV plateform above the RHIB aft ramp. A second 9m RHIB is fitted on a side davit, while the UAVs will be stored in a dedicated hangar.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) - Page 2 879
The standard configuration of the CL65 Mk II makes it a very efficient mothership for drone operations. It will still remain a very effective and powerful
OPV for conventional missions.

In option, the davit and/or aft ramp will be able to launch and recover USV and UUV drones. CL65 Mk II will be able to control and exploit the data of UAVs, UUVs and USVs operating simultaneously.

CL65 also feature a dedicated C-ESM system for better ISTAR performances. While it retains a 40mm main gun, its secondary weaponry relies on two remotely controlled weapon stations (up to 20mm). It can also accommodate a light surface-to-air or surface-to-surface missile system. CNM’s renderings feature a SIMBAD-RC system from MBDA. It is equipped with the new Mistral 3 missile that offer both surface-to-air and surface-to-surface ability, including against asymmetrical threats.

Vigilante CL75 Mk II

The biggest variant of the new Vigilante II family retains all the features of the lighter CL65 Mk II and vastly improved them. With a length of 75m, the CL75 has a crew of up to 65 sailors and passengers.

Propulsion is provided by two to four diesel engines, while two electric motors allow the hybrid propulsion mode. The ship’s autonomy will be of 7.000NM (at 7 knots) or 8.500NM (at 12 knots).

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) - Page 2 7a33
The bridge of the Vigilante Mk II family offer a 360° view, increasing the performances in coast guard and rescue operations.

The main weapon can now rely on a 76mm gun. It is completed by two RCWS able to accommodate 30mm guns, alongside four manual machine guns. And if that is not punchy enough, this weaponry can be completed with a SAM or SSM launcher.

Very versatile by design, the CL75 Mk II feature a helicopter platform for 10 tonnes helicopters and heavy UAVs. Two 9m RHIB are on the aft ramp (under the helicopter platform), and one 7m RHIB on a A-frame davit. These locations will be compatible with USV and UUV.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) - Page 2 783
The standard configuration of the CL75 Mk II includes four mission containers and a handling crane, three RHIB (2x9m and 1x7m), UAV facilities
and an helicopter platform. The large rear area of the ship could be easily adapted to any customer’s needs, from oceanographic missions to
heavily armed patrol.

For ISTAR missions, the CL75 Mk II is equipped with R-ESM and C-ESM systems. It also carries up to four mission containers, without compromising UAV or RHIB capabilities.

With an increased range, heavy weapons, a very versatile payload and its helicopter platform, the CL75 Mk II could be a very powerful OPV. According to the configuration, it is able to match the performance of some surveillance frigates. It is also likely that the CL75 could serve as a baseline for a tailor-made 80m OPV.

In a more conventional configuration, such a ship could probably accommodate a light helicopter with a hangar, heavy anti-ship missiles or extended crew facilities.

Euronaval Online 2020: Raytheon displays its SPY-6 latest generation of air defense radars for modern warships

25 October 2020

American company Raytheon displays new air defense radar SPY-6(V) for naval ships at Euronaval Online, the digital edition of Euronaval 2020, International naval defense and maritime security industry exhibition. The SPY-6 previously called AMDR (Air and Missile Defense Radar) is the latest generation of air-and-missile-defense radar designed to protect modern warships.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) - Page 2 683

(AMDR) fitted on a US Navy's Flight III DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyer scale model. (Picture source Navy Recognition)

The SPY-6(V) is a family of radars that will deliver significantly greater range, increased accuracy, greater resistance to environmental and man-made electronic clutter, advanced electronic protection, and higher reliability than currently deployed radars. It will provide integrated air and missile defense, and even periscope detection, for the Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

The SPY-6 family is integrated, meaning they can defend against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hostile aircraft, and surface ships simultaneously. They provide several advantages over legacy radars, including significantly greater detection range, increased sensitivity, and more accurate discrimination.

The SPY-6 is available in four variants including the (V)1, (V)2, (V)3, and V(4). The AN/SPY-6(V)1 is a 4-sided phased array radar with 37 RMAs (Radar Module Assemblies). It is capable of simultaneous defense against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, air and surface threats, as well as performing electronic warfare.

The AN/SPY-6(V)2 is a rotating and scaled-down version with 9 RMAs estimated to have the same sensitivity as AN/SPY-1D(V) radar while being significantly smaller. It is capable of simultaneous defense against cruise missiles, air and surface threats, as well as performing electronic warfare.

The AN/SPY-6(V)3 is a 3-sided phased array fixed version of the EASR, each with 9 RMAs. It has the same capabilities as AN/SPY-6(V)2.[17] Operating in S-band, it will serve as a Volume Search Radar complementing the AN/SPY-3 X-band radar on Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers starting with John F. Kennedy (CVN-79).

The AN/SPY6(V)4 is a 4-sided phased array radar with 24 RMAs. Similarly to AN/SPY-6(V)1, it is capable of simultaneous defense against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, air and surface threats, as well as performing electronic warfare Planned to be retrofitted on Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class DDG.

In July 2020, Raytheon has announced the delivery of the first AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar array for installation on the future USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125), the U.S. Navy's first Flight III guided-missile destroyer. The SPY-6 family of radars performs simultaneous air, missile and surface defense on seven types of U.S. Navy ships.

Raytheon has planned to build 36 SPY-6 radar arrays in the next three years as part of low-rate initial production. The company is contracted with the U.S. Navy to deliver nine DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyer SPY-6 radar to Huntington Ingalls Industries, and Bath Ironworks in Bath, Maine.

ammunition. (Picture source Nexter Group)

Nexter Munitions is part of Nexter Group's Ammunition Department, alongside the companies Mecar and Simmel Difesa. Nexter Munitions is primarily the ammunition manufacturer for systems developed by Nexter.

Nexter Munitions has designed and produced a wide range of naval ammunition. Ranging from 20 to 30 mm caliber to 127 mm ammunition as well as the 40 mm telescoped, these shells are optimized for anti-ship and air defense, including anti-ship missiles.

The Nexter 127mm naval ammunition family includes L54 HE (High Explosive), L54 PFFC (Preformed Fragmented Cubes), L54 TP (Target Practice) and L54 FNF (Practice ammunition). The 127mm PFFC is the latest addition to the 127mm L54 family. This projectile has the same external ballistics of the HE projectile, but it is fitted with about 2,270 tungsten cubes, lined to the steel shell, that enhances its effectiveness, especially for shore bombardment mission.

The 127mm PFFC projectile is designed and manufactured by Simmel Difesa to be fired by the 127mm L54 OTO Melara automatic gun 127mm L54 U.S. gun and the 127mm L64 OTO Melara Lightweight gun.

For naval gunfire support, the availability of a Height-Of-Burst (HOB) fuze makes the PFFC extremely effective when a large area is to be cleared. In this case, a detonation at a few meters above the ground ensures the distribution of fragments over a large area.

The 127mm PFFC has a weight of 32 kg and a length of 661mm. The ammunition has a muzzle velocity of 808 m/s and a maximum range of 20,750 m.

The 100mm naval ammunition family produced by Nexter Munitions includes the HE (High Explosive) F1, HE PFF (High Explosive – Pre-Formed Fragmentation) F4, and the TP (Target Practice). The HE F1 multipurpose high-explosive round is used for surface warfare and shore bombardment. This round can be used with the automatic guns of the Model 53 mounts and derivatives as well as with that of the 100mm COMPACT Mk 2 mounts.

The HE PFF F4 round is optimized for air defense, including against sea-skimmer anti-ship missiles. This round can be used with the automatic guns https://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php/news/naval-exhibitions/euronaval-2020-exhibitors-visitors-information/euronaval-2020-news/9185-euronaval-online-2020-nexter-group-from-france-presents-its-full-range-of-naval-ammunition.htmlof the Model 53 mounts and derivatives as well as with that of the 100mm COMPACT Mk 2 mounts.

Euronaval: French Navy Becomes Launch Customer of Naval Group’s D-19T UUV

The French Navy (Marine Nationale) is the launch customer of Naval Group's new unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), the D-19. Naval News learned from the French shipbuilder during Euronaval that the French Navy placed an order for an undisclosed number of D-19T anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training UUVs.

The D19 is the last generation of versatile Unmanned Underwater Vehicle developed by Naval Group for military missions. The D19 is built on a F21 torpedo base. This way, Naval Group takes advantage of its experience accumulated with the development of this torpedo. The D19 is propelled by a Lithium-ion energy section. Already sea proven thanks to the joint effort of Naval Group and the French Navy, the D19 combines long

The family of D19 drones is equipped with modular front-end payload, meaning it can easily be adapted for each mission. It can be launched by a submarine, a surface vessel or from the shore. Thanks to its plug-and-play payload system, D19 can fulfil a wide variety of missions:

■intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR),
■electronic warfare,
■anti-submarine warfare (ASW),
■ASW training,
■underwater mobile target,
■mine countermeasures,
■rapid environmental assessment,
■mine and mine laying.

Talking to Naval News, a Naval Group spokesperson explained that the French Navy ordered the D-19T as part of the Artémis program also known as F21 heavyweight torpedo program:

“The D-19T will serve primarily as targets for torpedo fire training. Start of mass production is scheduled for mid-2021 and delivery to the customer is set for the end of 2021. We are not authorized to give the number of D19 ordered by the French Navy and we do not wish to provide details about ongoing talks with other customers”.

Naval News comments

Based on the F21 heavyweight torpedo, the D19 will likely be part of the Suffren-class’ weapons package alongside the torpedoes, missiles and mines. The number of navies able to deploy UUVs from submarines is quite limited today:
•The US Navy is likely able to deploy the Bluefin-21 from a submarine (according to this video by General Dynamics).
•The Swedish Navy now has a capability to launch and recover UUVs from its Gotland-class submarines, as we reported last year.
