Euronaval 2020 Still On for October

Xavier Vavasseur   05 May 2020

Euronaval 2020 is set to take place 6 month from now. The occasion for Naval News to (remotely) sit down with the event's general manager and ask a few questions about the largest naval defense exhibition in the world. Mark your calendar: The event is still very much on!

[Ed. note: The original, French language, version of this interview can be found at the bottom of this page]

Naval News: Tell us about the 2020 edition. What will be the main themes? With 6 months to go, how are the preparations going?

Hugues du Plessis d’Argentré, Euronaval Managing Director: Euronaval 2020 will open its doors as planned from 20 to 23 October in Paris Le Bourget, with an international symposium on Monday 19 October organized in Paris in collaboration with the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique. This edition follows from the very successful 50th anniversary edition of 2018, which was visited by the French President.

We are well aware of the threat posed by the health crisis to the organization of this major international gathering, but with six months to go before the exhibition, we prefer to believe in the recovery and we are vigorously preparing for it.

Euronaval 2020, true to its DNA, will be a global show that will enable companies from all over the world to present the best in naval innovation and efficiency to virtually all chiefs of staff and decision-makers from the navies and states of the five continents. It is an event that can not be missed, where the future of the navies and therefore the future of sea control is at stake.

There will be many new products and points of interest at the show, in particular the new “Cyber naval hub” that we are co-organizing with CEIS, the SEAnnovation space dedicated to start-ups that we are setting up in cooperation with STARBURST and the Navire des Métiers managed by the Campus des Industries Navales (CINav).

What are the first results of the SEAnnovation call for applications?

The positive reception of this initiative by the start-ups is undeniable and we are expecting many applications because the maritime and naval field is particularly conducive to innovation. We saw this in 2018 at Euronaval when the French President paid special attention to it, but also in February 2020 in Marseille at the EUROMARITIME trade fair that we organized there.

What could be the consequences of the crisis on the show? How can exhibitors and visitors be reassured?

We are optimistic. But we cannot ignore the risk of seeing some countries still struggling with Covid-19 next October. What will be the conditions of gathering, the opening of borders, the freedom of travel, the willingness to participate in a show as exciting and useful as it is? No one knows for sure, and it does not seem appropriate for us to give in to worry and irrationality today. We will take all measures in our power to ensure the best possible health safety and guarantee exhibitors and visitors a favorable business environment.

What is the impact of this crisis on the naval defense sector?

I am afraid that there are few economic sectors that are unaffected by this crisis. The naval sector is ni exception. We hope that it will only be temporary. Nearly all world trade transits by sea, and the oceans are a precious resource of food, energy and molecules for our societies. In order to meet the strategic and geopolitical challenges of securing maritime spaces and controlling the oceans, well-equipped and well-trained navies are needed, and will continue to be needed for the foreseeable future. The coming period will undoubtedly be a little difficult, but the naval industry is organizing itself to face it and bounce back after the crisis.

Euronaval, at its modest level, wishes to act alongside GICAN and the entire marine industry sector to accompany and support the rebound.

Euronaval: The 2020 Edition Will Be Digital

Faced with the new health regulations, the GICAN and its subsidiary SOGENA are reorienting the 2020 edition of the EURONAVAL exhibition towards a fully digital format. From 19th to 25th October, exhibitors, official delegations and visitors can now meet on the NAVAL ONLINE platform.

Naval News Staff 25 Sep 2020

The GICAN’s Board of Directors had taken the courageous decision, necessary for the relaunch of the naval activity, to maintain the 2020 edition of the EURONAVAL exhibition. The preparations, in conjunction with the State services concerned and notably the Prefecture, have so far made it possible to envisage a successful exhibition in strict compliance with health regulations.

The GICAN’s Board of Directors has taken note of the announcements made by the Health Minister on Wednesday 23rd September: the reduction in the maximum authorised capacity for major events, from 5,000 to 1,000 people, as well as the now established resurgence of the epidemic, means that it is no longer possible to guarantee a satisfactory “face-to-face” exhibition, both for the 300 exhibitors and for the 70 official foreign delegations that had already expressed the wish to travel to Paris-Le Bourget.

In this context, the GICAN and SOGENA have decided to redirect EURONAVAL 2020 towards a entirely digital solution.

With the support of its partners, the 2020 edition of EURONAVAL will be held exclusively online, thanks to the new NAVAL ONLINE platform. Previously reserved for official delegations and exhibitors unable to travel to Paris-Le Bourget, NAVAL ONLINE will now be open to all visitors and exhibitors who wish to use it.

From 19th to 25th October, delegations and visitors from all over the world will be able to meet the EURONAVAL 2020 exhibitors at the NAVAL ONLINE digital exhibition. They will also be able to organise their BtoB meetings by video conference on the Euronaval site and follow the themed workshops that will showcase all the expertise of the naval industry. The cycle of online web-conferences, piloted by the Foundation for Strategic Research (FRS) is also being maintained.

“In our sector of activity, nothing beats a physical event and meetings. The Euronaval 2020 exhibition was eagerly awaited by exhibitors and our international visitors after several months of interruption of trade fairs around the world. The resumption of business contacts is more important than ever. The GICAN and SOGENA are taking a responsible attitude in light of the resurgence of the epidemic, but are determined to support the activity of manufacturers in France, Europe and around the world, and are offering an innovative solution to all the actors in the sector, to accompany the revival of the naval market. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the Ministry of Armes Forces for its unfailling support throughout the long and perilous preparation of Euronaval”.

Hervé GUILLOU, President of the GICAN

“I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all our exhibitors, agents, partners and service providers. They have put their trust in us and accompanied us with courage and kindness in the difficult and risky preparation of this exhibition. I would also like to thank the members of the 70 delegations from 46 different countries who had already agreed to take part in Euronaval. I share their disappointment at not being able to be present at Paris-Le Bourget. I am delighted to be able to offer the Naval-Online digital exhibition that will accompany the revival of the naval industry in France and around the world”.

Hugues d’ARGENTRÉ, Managing Director of SOGENA

Iguana experts will be available to discuss your amphibious project through video calls. Hence, interested people are invited to schedule a virtual meeting with its experts by visiting Euronaval 2020 Online platform.

The French boat manufacturer Iguana entered in the military sector at BIDEC 2017, the Bahrain International Defence Exhibition and Conference with its Iguana Pro, a very unique amphibious boat with the capability to move on to land thanks to retractable tracks , allowing freedom to access any terrain along the coastline without compromising its water performance.

The unique amphibious capability of this boat opens a new era. Iguana Pro are fast and efficient boats riding at speeds up to 47 mph and have the capability to land. The singular mobility system is driving on a pair of rubber tracks enabling unparalleled adeptness on all terrains. By pressing a button, it only takes 8 seconds to shift the landing gear.

Built with sheer simplicity and fitted with the very last technology, the powertrain architecture is developed specifically to be both efficient and extremely resistant. Hydraulic propulsion combined with simple mechanisms provides long-term operation and easy maintenance. The design is based on a deep-V carbon fiber hull combined with shock mitigation construction that allows operation safely in strong weather and breaking seas providing the stability and maneuverability to operate effectively in a hostile maritime environment.

The Iguana Pro could be a future solution for Special Forces with a fast boat similar to standard Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) which can be used on the sea but also the land to perform landing operations.

Euronaval 2020: Black Scorpion small-size torpedo from Leonardo

The Black Scorpion torpedo was designed to be launched from sonobuoy tubes found onboard ASW helicopters and Maritime Patrol Aircraft. The mini torpedo is intended to be used when the submarine contact is not accurate. The Black Scorpion "pings" in the water which either locates the target or forces the target to move. Black Scorpion retains the ability to hit the target and induce damage with its small warhead.

Its development should be brought back to the complexity of the international scenarios that are characterized by the growing number of mini-submarines (Midgets); this has given birth to the need for weapons capable of forcing the threat to commit indiscretions, thus accelerating its classification process and avoiding the use of very expensive torpedoes.

The Black Scorpion can be launched both from aircraft and ships and submarines through buoys dispensers and launchers, which the Units are already equipped with. It can operate in shallow water and, thanks to its characteristics it can be effectively employed in an anti-terrorist role within the asymmetric fight.

The Black Scorpion torpedo has a body diameter of 127mm and a length of 1.1 meters. She has the capacity of operating in shallow waters (ASW) at sea depths ranging from 30 to 200 meters, being launched in AIR mode.

Euronaval: Lacroix Unveils ‘VESTA’ a New Offboard Active Decoy

Xavier Vavasseur  18 Oct 2020

Yannick Smaldore contributed to this story

The French Defense Innovation Agency (AID) issued a call for proposals in the fall of 2019, calling for the study and development of a new generation of decoy called “offboard active decoy”. This new system would be used as a complement to existing passive decoys. Lacroix Defense is one of a handful of French Defense companies who answered this call for proposals last year from the newly created “French DARPA”.

Lacroix is a pyrotechnic systems integrator which has been working in this field for over 40 years with the experts at the French DGA as well as with several navies throughout the world to ensure that self-protection capabilities meet the necessary requirements to defeat the latest threats. According to Lacroix, this experience gives the company’s R&D teams superior expertise in combining multiple decoy effects in various deployment vectors, which are themselves integrated into a system.

Here are some of the requirements as outlined by the AID for the project:
•a standalone remotely operated vehicle able to quickly reach a location from a ship, to follow a specified trajectory and capable of carrying a payload emitting electromagnetic waves.
•a vehicle able reach a defined position in any direction from the ship in less than 10 seconds, at a distance of about 600m. It can either be pre-deployed or deployed following an alert from the ship. Altitude: 5m to 50m.
•Trajectories can be modified in real time using data from the ships or the ROV. Changes of direction must be very fast.
•Payload of either 15kg or 35kg. Developed by a third party.
•Autonomy of at least 3min, 20min if possible.
•Integrated on the upper decks of the ship (and therefore not in the Sylver VLS). Launching device (catapult, launcher) must be included in the scope of the project.

VESTA stands for Versatile EW Self-protection Tactic onboard unmanned Aircraft. It is basically an active jammer embedded in a UAV.

“Our Off Board Active Decoy (VESTA) project is an essential component of our vision of self protection, based on a comprehensive approach, allowing “multi-layered” and “multi-threat” protection mixing Hard Kill, off board active and passive decoys tactics, Anti torpedoes solutions.”

Xavier Cadour, head of Naval Systems at Lacroix Defense

Compared to existing offboard active decoys, such as the Nulka, VESTA comes with the following advantages:
•More maneuverable
•More affordable because it is based on COTS technologies
•Unlike Nulka, VESTA will be optionally retrievable
•VESTA’s in-flight endurance is confidential, however Naval News understands that the electrical propulsion of the UAV will likely provide a much longer autonomy than the Nulka’s rocket propulsion

“Mixing a pyrotechnic booster with a dexterous UAV will provie the end-user with immediate reaction and unrivalled operational maneuvrability”

Lacroix Defense

For the UAV itself, Lacroix partnered with French company Aviation Design which is a specialist in the field. The VESTA relies on a hexacopter UAV. The jammer system will highly likely be provided by the French leader in this field: Thales.

Lacroix did not disclose much details about the launch system but said their plan is to have a highly modular decoy launcher based on the existing Sylena family. The idea would be to be able to offer navies a customizable launcher able to deploy the entire range of decoys:
•SEALIR
•SEALEM
•Anti-Torpedo
•VESTA

This launcher could be named “Sylenna Mk+” and would provide surface vessels with needed protection across three layers:

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 1061
EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 10a53
EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 1161
According to Lacroix, VESTA is the 2nd stage of a 3 layer protection system: The first layer consisting in surface to air missiles (top left) and
the third layer being the RF/IR/EO passive decoys (top right).

Lacroix told Naval News that the goal, eventually, is to control VESTA from the ship’s CIC via a datalink. Such a datalink will also allow VESTA to autonomously follow and protect its mothership, when no human decision is required. A lot of development work will be need to be able to maintain that link in a highly complex EW environment (with the ship’s jammers at full power for example) as well as on the cyber front, to make sure that VESTA can not be hacked.

Just one year after the IAD issued their call for proposals, Lacroix Defense was able to study and develop a solution to answer the needs of the French Navy. The project is progressing well according to Lacroix: The first flight of VESTA is set for early 2021. Should these tests be conclusive, it will be up to the DGA to decide to go ahead and procure the VESTA. In this eventuality, the first surface combatants to be fitted with VESTA would likely be the FDI… which are currently set to enter active duty with no anti-missile decoy systems or EW jammers: As of today, their protection will rely exclusively on guns and missiles. That is unless VESTA comes into play.

The Suffren class is more than an iterative improvement on the Rubis-class. It will provide a broader capability, able to take on a wider
range of missions.

France’s Submarine Game Changer: The New Suffren-class

As part of Naval News' official coverage of Euronaval 2020, renowned submarine expert H I Sutton looks at the new Suffren-class of submarines and explains why it will be a game changer for the French Navy.

H I Sutton  18 Oct 2020

Six new attack submarines will form the vanguard of the French Navy (Marine Nationale) for the coming decades. Developed as the Barracuda program, the lead boat of the new class, Suffren, is expected to formally join the fleet next year. The new submarines will offer a massive capability leap over the current Rubis-class boats.

Among the improvements, the Suffren-class will be armed with a wider spectrum of weapons. The latest F-21 heavyweight torpedoes will provide the core anti-submarine and anti-ship punch. These electric-powered weapon can use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for training shots, and one-time aluminum silver oxide batteries for war shots. With a speed of over 50 knots it can reach targets over 27 nautical miles (50 km) away.

The other new weapon carried will be the Naval Cruise Missile (NCM). This is generally equivalent of the Tomahawk land attack cruise missile (LACM). Cruise missiles will provide the Suffren-class with a first-night strategic strike capability. This will reach deep inside enemy territory, a capability few other navies will have.

The weapons load-out can be rounded out with the FG-29 mine and Exocet SM39 anti-ship missile. Both of these are already carried by Marine Nationale submarines.

In the future, torpedo-sized UUVs (uncrewed underwater vehicles) may also be carried. Naval Group’s new D-19 type might be ideally suited. These can carry out a wide range of missions including Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR), electronic warfare (EW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW),mine counter-measures (MCM) and mine warfare.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 1320
First-in-class submarine “Suffren” during sea trials in 2020. Naval Group pictures.

Its not only the broad array of weapons that will set these boats apart. The ultra-modern sensor masts by Safran Electronics & Defence are another key modernization. They are all non-penetrating, which means that they do not go inside the pressure hull. This will make the submarine safer if there is a periscope collision. It also means that the control room does not have to be in its traditional location directly under the sail. In Suffren‘s case it is further aft behind the sail.

The Control Room is much larger than on older submarines. The captain is seated against the back wall, affording him or her an excellent view of the ten multi-function consoles. The center of the room, where the periscope wells used to be, is now dominated by a touch-screen tactical table. And the Operations Room is there, integral to the command center.

Among the missions which can be run from the Operations Room are the landing of Special Forces. The Marine Nationale has a strong tradition of naval special forces and pioneered many aspects of these operations. For example, detachable hangars for Swimmer Delivery Vehicles (SDVs).

The Marine Nationale stepped away from this capability with the retirement of the Agosta-class submarines twenty years ago. But the Suffren-class are part of a new generation of western submarines with special operations capabilities designed-in from the start. They have a large lock-out chamber for combat swimmers and the hangar can be fitted directly over it. Inside can be the latest PSM3G swimmer delivery vehicle.

The Suffren-class is more than an iterative improvement on the Rubis-class. It will provide a broader capability and is able to take on a wider range of missions.

CNIM's Eagle Owl tethered aerostat (Credit: CNIM)

Euronaval: CNIM Soars with New Aerial Coastal Surveillance Solutions

Blimps, airships and other tethered aerostats have been deployed for years to protect land settlements and conducts border surveillance. During Euronaval, French group CNIM takes the concept a step further with naval application in mind, leveraging on a mature line of products.

Nathan Gain  18 Oct 2020

In France, such systems were mostly deployed in the Sahel (Africa) region for protecting French Army military bases. According to end-users, the experiment was extremely relevant, the system having reduced the number of attacks by seven when deployed. With increasing immigration issue and incidents in national maritime EEZ, various armed forces are now considering these light and mobile solutions to complement the existing fixed surveillance assets.

CNIM entered this segment in march 2019 when it acquired french SME Airstar Aerostar specialized in blimps. The company was renamed CNIM Airspace a few months later.

« This company is one of the main partners of Thales for the Stratobus airship project and provide the French space agency CNES with stratospheric blimps for measures and tests tasks »
Xavier Montazel, director of the Defence & Maritime division at CNIM.

CNIM Airspace also sold number of smaller systems for the control of power lines.

CNIM Airspace relies on three types of tethered aerostats depending on the payload capacity, autonomy and altitude, from tactical with the White Hawk, to the operative and strategic levels with the the Eagle Owl and Condor systems. Following successful experiments, CNIM is now promoting small and medium tethered aerostats for border and coastal surveillance missions.

« The need for such tethered aerostats is now rising with a growing number of call for tenders, » Montazel adds. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), among others, launched a tender for two systems which will be tested in the Greek islands. Frontex’s experiment is directly linked to an ever-growing requirement for more efficient and accurate detection capabilities in a contested environment such as the Oriental part of the Mediterranean Sea. « These trials aim at validating the relevance of tethered aerostats in such context of use ». But the trials Frontex will carry out could open the way to a larger market, as the agency is qualified to propose every solution it deploy to each European country.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 317
Picture CNIM Airspace

Back in France, tethered aerostats are not being considered for deployment along the coastal mainland. The French Navy planned on running tests at some point, but was stopped as the French Ministry of Armed Forces considers the Spationav V2 coastal surveillance system sufficient to meet the need. « The solution could nevertheless be considered for the overseas departments and territories ». Two programs are also being pursued by the French Army Technical Section to equip the French Army with an industrial solution aiming at protecting bases and logistical convoys once stopped.

White Hawk weights around 15 kg for a maximum ceiling of 200 to 300 meters and a payload capability of up to 5 kg. The Eagle Owl, which has a weight of 100 kg,  has a maximum ceiling of 600 meters and carry up to 90 kg of payload during 7 days. « Our idea is to make this system a complement to existing semaphores, which are limited in term of radar and EO/IR detection capabilities ». Thus, adding a few hundred meters of altitude will significantly increase the sensors range.

« Depending on the payload requested by the user. The White Hawk is designed for a  single payload like lightweight EO/IR sensors, but if you need to add communication relays and/or radar or heavier EO/IR sensors then the Eagle Owl should be the correct answer »
Xavier Montazel, director of the Defence & Maritime division at CNIM.

Euronaval 2020: MBDA launches new VL MICA NG air defense system

19 October 2020

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 1245
SAAB exhibits products and solutions for maritime defense IMDEX 2019 925 001Firing of a VL MICA NG (Pictur source: MBDA)

The VL MICA NG system is based on the integration into the existing VL MICA system of the MICA NG (New Generation) air defense missile, which began development in 2018 primarily to equip France’s Rafale combat aircraft. The VL MICA system family – now adopted, in its naval or land-based versions, by 15 armed forces around the world – will consequently benefit from enhanced potential to counter future threats.

About the VL MICA NG system, MBDA CEO Eric Béranger declared: “After two years of development on the New Generation MICA missile, we have acquired a deep understanding of the performance of this brand new air-to-air missile which allows us, in full confidence, to market its integration into VL MICA ground-to-air or surface-to-air defence systems. The total compatibility between the two generations of missile will allow armed forces to combine them with their existing systems, thus maximizing their return on investments.”

Thanks to the technological innovations it incorporates, the new VL MICA NG system offers improved capabilities to handle atypical targets (UAVs, small aircraft) as well as future threats, characterised by increasingly low observable infrared and radio frequency signatures. Additionally, it will be able to intercept at longer distances the ‘conventional’ targets (aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles) already addressed by the current VL MICA system.

The dimensions of the MICA NG munition remain unchanged, allowing it to be integrated into existing VL MICA launchers. The existing missile data link mechanisms are compatible with the increased kinematic performance of the missiles, enabling current VL MICA systems to be upgraded to VL MICA NG standard by simple software updates.

MICA NG Missile

Based on an entirely new design, the MICA NG missile inherits the external dimensions and unique concept that has made the MICA anti-air missile such a success for a quarter of a century. This concept means MICA features either an infrared or a radio frequency seeker on the same common missile body, allowing the operator, at the moment of firing, to select the best option to respond to the tactics adopted by the adversary.

On the MICA NG, a new infrared seeker based on a matrix sensor will provide increased sensitivity, while a new radio frequency seeker with an active electronically scanned antenna (AESA) will allow for smart detection strategies. The lower volume of electronic components will enable the MICA NG to carry a larger load of propellant, significantly extending its range, and the new dual-pulse rocket motor will provide additional energy to the missile at the end of its flight, improving its manoeuvrability and its ability to intercept targets at long range. In surface-to-air mode, the MICA NG will be able to intercept targets over 40 km away. Finally, maintenance and ownership costs will be significantly reduced thanks to internal sensors that will monitor the status of the munition throughout its life cycle.

The MICA NG missile will be available in series production from 2026.

SAAB exhibits products and solutions for maritime defense IMDEX 2019 925 001Nexter RapidFire 40mm naval gun system (Picture source Nexter)

The RapidFire 40mm naval gun system consists of an over-deck self-contained gyro-stabilized gun mounting armed with the CTA 40, Case Telescoped Armament System (CTAS) cannon, designed to fire 40mm telescoped ammunition.

The RapidFire 40mm naval weapon system offers new very short-range air defense systems able to destroy different types of aerial threats including manned and unmanned targets. It features a latest-generation multi-threat (air and surface), multi-environment (land and naval) gun system, with a cost of engagement commensurate with the value of the threats.

The RapidDFire is a weapon system that offers high precision thanks to its optronic fire control system integrated on the turret, its advanced algorithms, powerful gun and automatic ammunition management system allowing the best reactivity and efficiency for the operator.

The 40 RapiFire naval gun has a firing rate of up to 200 rounds by minute using airburst ammunition. The concept of air burst ammunition came up in order to increase the efficiency of the gun systems against air-to-surface missiles, UAV’s, etc. The idea is basically to create a cloud of particles that have high kinetic energy and penetration capability on the path of the threat and be able to hit targets that are very difficult to hit with the classical ammunitions.

The 40mm RapidFire has an effective firing range of 4,000 meters against air targets and up to 2,500 meters against surface threats. It can fire in a fully autonomous mode and is equipped with infrared and daylight TV channels as well as a laser range finder.

The TSA6000 system with its four fixed panels

Euronaval: Thales Unveils the TSA-6000, a new IFF for FDI frigates

During Euronaval 2020, Thales launches the world's first fixed-panel friend-foe identification system for the French Navy's future frigates. Alongside the –already well-known– SeaFire radar, the new TSA 6000 IFF will be integrated into the electronic warfare suite of the future Amiral Ronarc'h-class, the French Navy version of the FDI.

Yannick Smaldore  19 Oct 2020

Thales press release

Thales launches the world’s first fixed-panel IFF system for the French Navy’s future frigates

Thales is unveiling the TSA6000, the first IFF interrogator to use flat fixed-array active antenna technology. This new solution, unique in the world, provides 360° coverage around the vessel, with no trade-off in range capabilities, and an unprecedented and extremely fast identification capability.

•Identifying air targets after they have been detected is crucially important in the theatre of operations. To meet this need of the Forces, Thales is unveiling the TSA6000, the latest addition to its family of IFF (identification friend or foe) interrogators.
•The fully digital TSA6000 comprises four fixed antenna panels to provide 360° coverage and unprecedented identification performance.
•Smaller, lighter and more efficient than a rotating antenna system, the interrogator can identify targets extremely quickly and is set to revolutionise IFF identification.

Naval forces today need to be able to rely on new technology to make the best decisions when it matters most. Thales helps them conduct their missions more safely at every critical moment, building on its air surveillance expertise and in-depth knowledge of operational contexts to develop high-value end-to-end IFF solutions.

A revolutionary fixed-panel technology

Based on a revolutionary all-digital flat fixed-array technology, the TSA6000 IFF identification system provides a smart 360° electronic scanning (or e-scan) capability enabling extremely fast identification of new types of threats. The four-panel antenna design allows full 360° coverage, overcoming the problem of signal masking caused by a ship’s topside infrastructure, especially if it has multiple masts. Smaller and lighter, the TSA6000 is much easier for systems integrators to position and install on a vessel compared to IFF systems with rotating array antennas or fixed cylindrical arrays.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 467
On the FDI, the PSIM (Panoramic Sensors and Intelligence Module) integrated the ESM suite, the Sea Fire radar and the new TSA6000 IFF.

The TSA6000’s panels are independent from the radar system for even greater flexibility of installation and maintenance. Its modular, scalable all-digital architecture also simplifies support operations significantly: each panel comprises multiple modules for built-in redundancy and to help ensure the system is permanently available. In addition, the system has no mechanical or rotating parts, considerably increasing reliability and reducing time to repair.

The TSA6000 is compliant with Mode 5, the new NATO secure identification standard. With this new product, Thales offers an ultra high-performance identification capability with guaranteed interoperability between NATO and allied forces for the decades ahead.

A comprehensive communication and electronic warfare suite for the FDI frigates

The TSA6000 will equip the French Navy’s future FDI-class frigates from 2021 alongside the Sea Fire radar from Thales, which also has a flat-panel array. The radar / IFF combination will offer a near- instantaneous detection and identification capability against high-velocity threats.

As a global market leader in IFF identification, Thales provides a complete range of IFF solutions to meet the current and future needs of the armed forces. To date, over 20,000 IFF devices from Thales have been installed on 100 different types of land, air and naval platforms in 70 countries.

The TSA6000 is the latest addition to the Thales family of IFF products and meets the full range of current and future operational requirements. With its unique digital architecture, it is designed to evolve in line with emerging requirements and future threats. We’re proud to be providing state- of-the-art and ever more innovative solutions to ensure the highest levels of protection for the armed forces and help them conduct their operations safely.

Florence Gourgeon, Vice President Radio communications, Thales

Naval News comments

Alongside the Sea Fire radar and the new TSA 6000 IFF, Thales is supplying Aquilon, a secure, integrated and digital naval communications system that guarantees connectivity and interoperability for the frigate and its crew. One of the main components of this system is PARTNER-C, the latest iteration of the PARTNER range of communication management systems which was unveiled last year. According to Thales, PARTNER-C has a new intuitive man-machine interface adapted to sailors accustomed to consumer communications technologies. COMTICS, which Thales described as “the sailor’s smartphone”, will also be available on the frigate. The dual-band SURFSAT-L stations and the HF XL, a new generation of HF radios, will give the FDI enhanced long-distance connectivity in all circumstances.

EURONAVAL (20 au 23 octobre 2020) 580
Thales aboard FDI frigate. At the beginning of the program (FDI was then the FTI), the IFF was only appointed as part of the “BlueGate” family.

All these previous systems were already displayed by Thales on previous editions of Euronaval and other international exhibitions. Their integration aboard the FDI was well know since the beginning of the program. But it is the first time that Thales unveiled details about the IFF system that will be coupled with the fixed panel AESA radar Sea Fire. Until now, it was only known that the FDI’s IFF will be a solution from Thales’ BlueGate family.

Finally, it seems that the FDI frigates will be equipped with an entirely new IFF system. Fixed-panel radar and IFF will provide a better 360° real-time air-defense coverage. This increase in performance will be needed in the next decades. Indeed, the FDI frigates are designed to deal with new generation threats, such as hypersonic missiles, stealth aircrafts and swarms of UAVs.

Based on an all-digital technology, the interrogator provides intelligent 360° electronic scanning, enabling identification in a very short time in the face of new threats. Smaller and lighter, the TSA 6000 offers operators ease of layout and installation on the vessel. More efficient, the interrogator is able to detect a threat in a very short time and revolutionizes friend-foe identification. Combined with the SEA FIRE, the radar/IFF pair will thus offer an almost instantaneous hyper- velocity threat detection and identification capability.

Using its experience in the field of amphibious operations, the French Company CNIM has developed and designed the latest generation of landing crafts with the Landing Craft Assault (LCA) and Landing Craft multi-mission (LCX) that meet the current needs of modern naval forces.

The LCX – or Landing Craft Multi-Missions was unveiled at Euronaval 2018 by the defense company CNIM. It features a ship-like closed bow and a rear-only landing ramp with a bow-mounted 360° command bridge.

Operated from a NATO amphibious ship, with extremely high degrees of seaworthiness and maneuverability and designed with a 360° command bridge, the LCX can accommodate anti-submarine and mine warfare detachments to support reconnaissance, identification, and threat-neutralization.

Its high speed (20 to 35 kts) and high payload capacity (40 tons) make the LCX a major asset to Naval Forces. has a length of 29.5 m, a width of 6.4 m, and a draft when loaded of 1.3 m. It has a deck area of about 80 m². Operated by a crew of 4, the LCX has a nominal load of 65 tons and is self-protected by two 20 mm remotely operated automatic cannons.

A superbly versatile vessel, the LCX was also designed to take part in logistics operations conducted by Forces projection vessels such as the L-CAT and LCA. In this particular context, it also has the capability to offload nautical amphibious resources as it approaches the coastline

developed by Navantia. (Picture source Navantia)

The S-80 program is the first submarine with a completely Spanish design since until now the submarines that have been built had French or North American design. This submersible is the first one with 100% Navantia design, and therefore it is a step forward in the sovereignty of the National Defense and in the capacities of our naval industry. Only the most advanced countries in the world are capable of developing a technological project of this magnitude, which is why Spain ranks among the best in the sector.

The S-80 is designed to carry out a full range of missions including Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Special Operations Forces (SOF), Selective Land Attack, Designed for Full Combat Group Integration in First Strike Action, Shallow Water Operations, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Sequential Mine-laying and Deterrence

The S-80 submarine incorporates the most advanced technology, such as the propulsion system independent of the atmosphere (AIP) and integrates a state-of-the-art system for combat and support for the operations of Special Forces.

The S-80's air-independent propulsion (AIP) system is based on a bioethanol-processor consisting of a reaction chamber and several intermediate Coprox reactors. Provided by Hynergreen from Abengoa, the system transforms the bioethanol (BioEtOH) into high purity hydrogen. The output feeds a series of fuel cells from UTC Power Company. The submarine can reach a speed of 12 knots (22 km/h; 14 mph) in surfaced condition and 19 knots (35 km/h; 22 mph) submerged with a maximum range of 8,000 km and an endurance of 50 days in immersion.

The S-80 submarine has an overall length of 81 m and a hull diameter of 7.3 m. The surface displacement of the submarines is 2,200 tons, while the submerged displacement is 2,965 tons. The submarine can accommodate a crew of 32 sailors and eight Special Forces.

The S-80 submarine has six 533 mm torpedo tubes able to launch mines, DM2 A4 torpedoes, MK48 torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Tomahawk subsonic cruise missiles, a guided missile used against terrestrial targets, that remains in the atmosphere and flies the major portion of its flight path at an approximately constant speed. Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high precision. Modern cruise missiles are capable of traveling at supersonic or high subsonic speeds, are self-navigating, and are able to fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low-altitude trajectory.
