Oman’s first Khareef put through its paces
Al-Shamikh, the first of three new 99m ocean patrol vessels being built by BAE Systems Surface Ships for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) under Project Khareef, has completed its platform and machinery trials during just over three weeks of testing off the south coast of England. Ordered from what was then VT Shipbuilding in January 2007, the three 2,600-tonne displacement Khareef ships will be the largest and most complex surface combatants ever to serve with the RNO. Thales Nederland is principal subcontractor for the combat system scope of supply, while MBDA is equipping the Khareef ships with its VL MICA local area air defence system and MM40 Block 3 Exocet anti-ship missile. Running from 21 January to 16 February, the platform trials programme, overseen by representatives from the RNO, demonstrated the performance of Al-Shamikh’s power, propulsion and navigation systems across a range of evolutions. According to BAE Systems, the ship achieved its 25kt contract speed, and demonstrated excellent seakeeping characteristics. A follow-on programme of combat systems trials is due to start in the second quarter of 2011, leading to a handover to the RNO sometime in the middle of this year. Al-Shamikh will subsequently undergo a period of training with the UK’s Flag Officer Sea Training organisation before transiting to Oman. First-of-class missile firings are expected to be conducted off France en route. The second Khareef vessel, Al-Rahmani, was launched from BAE Systems Surface Ships’ Portsmouth yard in July 2010. The third and final ship of the class is due to be launched in mid-2011. janes.com

- Final Oman Ship Named in Ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base
Portsmouth, UK: The last of three corvettes under construction by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) was formally named in a launching ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base today.
Employees and guests, including senior representatives from the RNO and UK Royal Navy, gathered at the naval base to watch Lt General Hassan Mohsin Al Sharaiqi, Inspector General of the Police and Customs of the Sultanate of Oman, formally name the RNO's newest vessel, Al Rasikh.
Mick Ord, Managing Director of BAE Systems' Surface Ships division, said: "We have developed a close working relationship with the Royal Navy of Oman as we work in partnership to deliver the Khareef corvettes.
"These highly sophisticated ships are fitted with complex weapons and high quality accommodation with exceptional sea keeping ability. I have no doubt that Al Rasikh, and her sister ships, will be a valued asset within the Royal Navy of Oman's surface fleet."
Al Rasikh is part of Project Khareef, signed in 2007, for the design and build of three state-of-the-art 99 metre corvettes for the RNO. With a continued commitment to providing through-life support and services to its customers, BAE Systems is also delivering training for RNO personnel, as well as an initial logistics support package for the ships.
The corvette is an efficient and operationally flexible platform, equipped to defend against both surface and air threats. Al Rasikh and her sister ships will be used to protect Omani territorial waters, conducting coastal patrols in peacetime, with the ability to conduct search and rescue, as well as disaster relief, while providing ocean going capability for use in deterrent operations during times of tension.
Following hand over to the RNO next year, the first of class Al Shamikh, and her crew will undergo the UK Royal Navy's Flag Officer Sea Training programme before sailing to Oman for hot weather trials. Al Rahmani, the second ship of the class, was officially named in July 2010 and will undertake sea trials later this year.

| Oman – AVENGER Fire Units/STINGER Missiles/Surface-Launched AMRAAM - Citation :
- WASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2011 – The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress Oct. 18 of a
possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Oman for AVENGER Fire Units, STINGER Missiles and Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missiles, as well associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $1.248 billion.
The Government of the Oman has requested a possible sale of 18 AVENGER Fire Units, 266 STINGERReprogrammable Micro-Processor (RMP) Block 1 Anti-Aircraft missiles, 6 STINGER Block 1 Production Verification Flight Test missiles, 24 Captive Flight Trainers, 18 AN/VRC-92E exportable Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS), 20 S250 Shelters, 20 High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), 1 lot AN/MPQ-64F1 SENTINEL Radar software, 290 AIM-120C-7 SurfaceLaunched Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, 6 Guidance Sections, Surface-Launched Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (SL-AMRAAM) software to support Oman’s Ground Based Air defense System, training missiles, missile components, warranties, containers, weapon support equipment, repair and return, spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor technical support services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $1.248 billion.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country which has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability in the Middle East.
The proposed purchase of the AVENGER fire units and SL-AMRAAM will improve Oman’s capability to meet current and future regional threats. Oman is developing a layered air defense capability that incorporates a larger Foreign Military Sale-Direct Commercial Sale hybrid effort. This modern multi-layered air defense system will be integrated into the national command and control to protect strategic locations in Oman and its nearest vicinity. The system will serve as a deterrent to potential threats from regional unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and fighter aircraft. The proposed sale will provide a significant increase in Oman’s defensive capability while enhancing interoperability with the U.S. and other coalition forces. Oman will have no difficulty absorbing this additional capability into its armed force.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The prime contractors will be Raytheon Missile Systems of Tucson, Arizona, and Boeing of Huntsville, Alabama.
The purchaser typically requests offsets. Any offset agreements will be defined in negotiations between the purchaser and the contractor.
Implementation of this proposed sale will require multiple trips to Oman involving many U.S. Government or contractor representatives over a period of up to or over 15 years for program and technical support, equipment checkout, and training.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

| Oman possible buyer du C27 Spartan + infos sur une version Pretorian pour missions armés.. - Citation :
- DUBAI: Finmeccanica eyes Oman transport/maritime requirements
By: Luca Peruzzi Dubai 2 hours ago Source:flightglobal
Finmeccanica is at the show promoting its C-27J Spartan tactical transport as a contender for the Omani air force's requirement for eight multi-mission aircraft.
"We believe we are well placed for this tender, which is expected to be assigned by year-end", said Massimo Ghione, senior vice president marketing and sales for Finmeccanica's aeronautics sector. Ghione also sees interest in the C-27J from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and potentially the United Arab Emirates.
The Spartan is already in service with six customers, including Italy, Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Romania and the USA, while aircraft were recently delivered to Morocco and Mexico. The type has also been selected by Slovakia.
At the Paris air show earlier this year, Alenia Aeronautica announced the launch of a feasibility study by the Italian ministry of defence into a special version of the C-27J Spartan, which would be used for "typical commando missions", with the added capability of performing "weaponised type missions". Dubbed "Preatorian" and developed by an integrated MoD and company team with the aim of satisfying both domestic and export requirements, the new version is based on a Selex Sistemi Integrati (Selex-SI) "FlexMis" roll-on/roll-off air transportable command, control, communication and intelligence module, a weapon system and associated electro-optical/IR payload, said Alenia.
Finmeccanica is meanwhile proposing to Oman a maritime patrol version of the glass cockpit-equipped Alenia/EADS ATR 72-600 turboprop to meet the country's requirement for four aircraft to perform a range of missions, including exclusive economic zone patrol and resources protection, search and rescue and anti-pollution, both in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf.
Equipped with Selex Galileo's new maritime long-range airborne tactical observation system, together with a sensor suite including Selex Galileo's surface-search active electronically-scanned array radar, the ATR 72 MP has a maximum endurance of 10h (plus reserves) with an eight-person mission crew. Being conducted in parallel with the tactical transport aircraft evaluation, Oman's maritime patrol aircraft tender is expected to be awarded in early 2012. _________________

_________________

- Oman has issued a request for proposals to BAE Systems linked to the purchase of about 12 Eurofighter Typhoons, only one month after its plan to also buy a new batch of Lockheed Martin F-16s was revealed.
In a statement issued on 23 January, the UK government said it "welcomes the government of Oman's request for a proposal from BAE Systems for the supply and support of Typhoon aircraft". The milestone represents "an important step towards the contract", it added.
The UK and Omani governments have been involved in bilateral discussions over a Typhoon sale for the past several years, with Muscat's interest now believed to be linked to the acquisition of Tranche 3 production examples.
A deal is expected to be signed later in 2012, said BAE, which added that deliveries would start three years after the order confirmation. The company has already handed over its first 24 Typhoons to Saudi Arabia under a Project Salam deal totalling 72 units.
The Royal Air Force of Oman's combat aircraft inventory includes eight F-16Cs, along with eight Sepecat Jaguars and 10 armed BAE Hawk 203s, as assessed by Flightglobal's MiliCAS database.
Oman's separate request for a second batch of 12 F-16C/Ds was outlined by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency in December 2011. The purchase could be worth about $600 million, it said. http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/oman-requests-typhoon-buy-from-bae-367228
