China's first aircraft carrier completes 6th sea trial
BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhuanet) -- China’s first aircraft carrier has completed its sixth sea trial, and has returned to harbour in Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning province. The 9-day-long trial came just a week after the previous one.
The aircraft carrier "Varyag", is a remodelled Soviet-era vessel. It was bought from Ukraine in 1998. It is being refitted for scientific research and training purposes. The maiden sea trial took place in August last year.

Experts puzzled by mysterious UAVs on Chinese frigate
An unmanned helicopter takes off from the platform of a People’s Liberation Army Navy Type054A frigate during exercises in the Pacific earlier this month.
Photo courtesy of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force
Pictures released earlier this week by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) showing mysterious unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) hovering above and parked on the rear landing deck of a Chinese frigate at sea have left defense analysts scratching their heads.
The pictures, first published by Japanese media on Wednesday, were taken while three People’s Liberation Army Navy vessels — the Type 054A missile frigates Zhoushan and Xuzhou, and the electronic reconnaissance and missile tracking Beijixing — conducted exercises in the West Pacific, about 700km off Japan’s Okinotori.
A Japanese surveillance aircraft spotted the vessels on April 29 as they crossed from the East China Sea into the strait of Osumi, the first such crossing by PLAN vessels in nine years. The ships were again spotted on their return journey on Monday.
Aside from the rare crossing in a channel usually used by the US 7th Fleet, what mystified defense enthusiasts were two pictures released by the JMSDF, one showing three unmanned helicopters on the platform of the Zhoushan and another showing a similar type of UAV hovering above the vessel.
The People’s Liberation Army has a longstanding interest in UAV technology, and several civilian and military firms, including Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), have been working on a variety of models. However, China has yet to confirm the successful development of an unmanned helicopter that is heavy enough and capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) at sea, where runways are in short supply.
Very few models worldwide have demonstrated the capability so far. One of them, the Camcopter S-100s, built by Austrian firm Schiebel Corp, held a successful trial at sea last month on board an Italian naval ship.
According to analysts, the UAVs seen on the Zhoushan bear a striking resemblance to the S-100. The S-100 was showcased at the Fourth China International Exhibition on Police and Anti-Terrorism Technology and Equipment Exhibition held in Beijing in April last year, and defense-related Chinese Web sites have paid close attention to the device.
Rumors have circulated in defense circles that China may have placed orders for several S-100s. Although the EU has an arms embargo on China, the rules appear to have been relaxed in recent years, limiting exports to purely defensive platforms.
Foreign clients of the S-100 include Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Libya and South Korea, which experienced a crash in Incheon on May 11, killing one person. Pakistan has also expressed interest in acquiring the UAV.
Another possibility raised by some experts is that Chinese firms reverse-engineered the S-100, as they have often done with foreign technology.
One model, China’s Sunward Tech Star-lite SVU200, which conducted its maiden flight on land recently, looks very similar to the S-100. However, Greg Waldron of Flight Global, who attended the Beijing Air Show in September, where the SVU200 was showcased, told the Taipei Times the manufacturer had not mentioned sea capabilities for the aircraft.
Unmanned vehicles can serve a number of military purposes, including electro-optic surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition radar and transmission relay.
Such capabilities substantially increase a navy’s ability to monitor and control its surroundings. Larger models can also carry a variety of missiles.

Pentagon says China may build aircraft carriers By ROBERT BURNS, AP National Security Writer–2 days ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — China may have started work on it first domestically built aircraft carrier and is likely to produce a number of carriers over the next decade as part of an aggressive effort to modernize its military, the Pentagon said Friday.
In its annual report to Congress appraising China's military strength, the Pentagon also cited concern about China's targeting of U.S. and other foreign computer networks as a means of collecting strategic intelligence. It based this conclusion on unspecified "authoritative writings" and China's "persistent cyber intrusions."
More broadly, the report described an ambitious Chinese military program aimed at transforming the People's Liberation Army into a modern force, fueled by years of double-digit increases in defense spending. Its main goals include preserving Communist Party rule and preparing for possible hostilities in the Taiwan Strait, the report said.
China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949. Despite a marked improvement in relations over the past four years, China still threatens to attack across the Taiwan Strait if Taiwan moves to make its de facto independence permanent. U.S. arms sales to Taiwan are a frequent source of diplomatic friction with Beijing.
"China's military shows no sign of slowing its efforts to prepare for Taiwan Strait contingencies," David Helvey, the acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia, told a Pentagon news conference.
Beyond that, China has been developing a capability to project power well beyond its shores. One element of that is its expansion of naval power, including an anti-ship ballistic missile seen as a potential threat to U.S. aircraft carriers. Last year China also launched sea trials of its first carrier, a refurbished hulk purchased from Ukraine. Friday's report said China also may have begun work on its first built-from-scratch carrier.
The report, which in past years has drawn critical reviews in Beijing, was shorter than earlier versions and struck a measured tone. The Pentagon said it was meant to present data in a "descriptive, analytical manner."
China's military buildup is a central focus of the Obama administration as it shifts its attention more toward Asia and the Pacific in the aftermath of fighting wars in the greater Middle East over the past decade. The U.S. is not building new permanent bases in Asia but is seeking more security partnerships in the region.
Last year's Pentagon report forecast the possibility of China beginning construction of a fully indigenous carrier; this year's version went slightly farther, saying "some components" of the first carrier may already be under construction. It said that carrier could be ready for use after 2015, and that China is likely to build more of them.
"It will still take several additional years for China to achieve a minimal level of combat capability for its aircraft carriers," the report said, because it does not yet have pilots fully trained in carrier flight operations.
The Pentagon also said China's military is pursuing "new historic missions" that go beyond its traditional role of defending the homeland. These additional missions include humanitarian aid, combating piracy in the Gulf of Aden and counter-terrorism operations. The Pentagon cited as an example China's evacuation last year of 36,000 Chinese nationals from Libya during the uprising against Moammar Gadhafi.
Helvey said these Chinese operations abroad offer chances for cooperation with the U.S. military, which also has an interest in combating piracy and terrorism. On the other hand, he said, the U.S. will be watching closely to see that as it extends its reach around the world China lives up to its obligation to "uphold international norms and rules and to support the international community's interests in peace and stability."
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to make his first visit to China as Pentagon chief as early as this summer. On May 7 he hosted his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Liang Guanglie, in Washington.

China readies new missile corvette
LATEST TYPE:Defense analysts believe that the new missile boats will be perfectly suited to meet the challenges that China is facing in its South China Sea disputes
A new type of Chinese missile corvette, the principal role for which might be to project power in the South China Sea, could be launched “within days,” military watchers said on the weekend.
Talk of a Type 056 class first emerged in late 2010. So far, little technical information has been released about the corvettes, which are believed to lie in the 1,400-to-1,700-tonne category.
Two shipyards, Hudong Shipyard in Shanghai and Huangpu Shipyard in Guangzhou, are engaged in what appears to be a race to complete the vessels.
Officials at Hudong reportedly announced late last week that the first Type 056 corvette could be launched “within days,” with possible commissioning at the end of this year.
A total of four hulls are known to be under construction, with completion expected to follow soon after the delivery of the lead ship.
Designs of the Type 056 show fin stabilization for high seas navigation with weapons including a 76mm main gun, four surface-to-surface missile (SSM) launchers — reportedly YJ-83 SSMs, the latest Chinese design — and one FL-1000 surface-to-air missile launcher.
The corvette could also come equipped with torpedoes for limited anti-submarine capability.
It also has a helipad large enough to accommodate vertical takeoff and landing for unmanned aerial vehicles.
Analysts believe the Type 056 could replace or augment the six Type 037 Houjian 528 fast-attack craft that have been based in Hong Kong since 1997, with future production for other People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) fleets, where they could replace aging attack craft and frigates. The corvette could also be intended for export markets, with reports that the Bangladeshi navy has already expressed interest in its acquisition.
The new corvettes will fill a gap between smaller offshore patrol vessels and larger frigates and could be ideal for action in the South China Sea, where China is embroiled in disputes with Vietnam and the Philippines.
Analysts believe medium-sized ships like the Type 056 are better suited to combat light missile frigates with similar displacement already deployed by competitors in the volatile, mineral-rich body of water.
Beyond China’s disputes with the Philippines and Vietnam in the South China Sea, the new corvettes could also play a role in a conflict with Taiwan.
“The Type 056 looks like a rough match for the Taiwan Navy’s Lafayette frigates on a one-to-one basis,” James Holmes of the US Naval War College told the Taipei Times by e-mail last night. “Operated in ‘distributed’ fashion — multiple units networked to act in concert, combining their sensors and armaments — it would pose a serious challenge to Taiwan’s surface fleet in high-intensity combat.”
However, warships like the Type 056 are intended more to serve in a flotilla than to take part in major naval actions, Holmes said.
"Their armament is modest, but they outgun most competitors they’re likely to encounter in the South China Sea. They’re less useful in the Yellow and East China seas, where the competition is stiffer since the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the US Seventh Fleet are there,” he said.
In related developments, reports said on the weekend that the FFG 572 Yueyang — the 14th Type 054A destroyer in the PLAN — is scheduled to be commissioned with the 9th Destroyer Squadron in the South Sea Fleet sometime next year.

China's aircraft carrier completes 7th sea trial
BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhuanet) -- China’s first aircraft carrier, the "Varyag" has completed its seventh sea trial. This most recent sea trial began on May 23 and lasted for more than 200 hours, and comes only 8 days from the previous one.
Analysts say the recent high frequency of sea trials is a sign that China’s aircraft carrier endeavors have been successful.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said since August last year, China started to send its aircraft carrier on sea trials and is expected to continue a series of scientific research as planned.

The Mysterious Chinese Predator Clone
For the last four years a Chinese aircraft manufacturer (AVIC) has been showing off photos and videos of a prototype for a clone of the American MQ-1 Predator UAV, called the Wing Loong (that's Chinese for Pterodactyl, a Jurassic period flying dinosaur). For the first time, one has actually been seen in flight, over the capital of Uzbekistan. This may be the first export customer.
While Wing Loong is similar in shape to the larger American MQ-9 Reaper, in size it's almost identical to the 1.2 ton Predator. Wing Loong weighs 1.1 tons, has a 14 meter (46 feet) wingspan and is 9 meters (28 feet) long. It has max altitude of 5,300 meters (16,400 feet) and endurance of over 20 hours. Promotional pictures of the Wing Loong show it carrying two unidentified missiles. Not much more is known of this Predator clone.

Chinese military steps up conventional missile capability BEIJING: Amid escalation of maritime tensions with neighbours and a US military focus shift to Asia Pacific, Chinese military is stepping up its conventional missile capability, polishing its ability to carry out multiple launches while preserving its strategic nuclear deterrence.
"Conventional missiles are a trump card in modern warfare. So we must be ready at any time. We must be able to deliver a quick response to attacks, hit the targets with high accuracy, and destroy them totally," Tan Weihong, Commander of Second Artillery Force, which handles conventional and nuclear missiles said in a rear interview.
The conventional missile brigade was thrown open to the official English media for the first time after it was established, lifting a veil of mystery.
"The unit first grabbed attention in July 1995, when China announced the PLA would carry out missile tests in the high seas. Six missiles were fired in a week and each successfully hit their target.
"The missions announced to the world that China had both nuclear and conventional missiles, and thereby a strengthened military deterrence system," the state-run China Daily said.
"Before that, China had only nuclear missiles. The Gulf War in 1990 helped the nation's military leaders realise that conventional missiles were playing a bigger role in modern warfare," it said.
China has upgraded its missiles in the past few years several times, the brigade's armament has been updated several times, the Daily report said.
Meanwhile, with the increase of missile launching units over the years, the brigade had to develop a new commanding system to replace the old one that was based on vocal orders.
"The new system can handle multiple launches at the same time, which was impossible in the past," Tan said.
