- China is now spending four times more on defence than it did just 12 years ago, according to data just released by the US-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
China's defence spending rise is the most dramatic among Asian nations but it's also typical of a past decade during which other countries in the region have also tended to concentrate on acquiring and developing new weapons much more than in the past.
In fact, although no Asian nation is spending more than the US, China's defence spending, combined with that of four other Asian nations - India, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan - is soon expected to exceed Europe's as a whole.
In recent months, the US armed forces has been gradually basing more and more of its assets in Asia, drawing them away from other parts of the world. "With Asian defence spending projected to overtake that of Europe by the end of 2012, the United States' posture rebalancing toward the Asia-Pacific region is likely to continue", the CSIS study states.
China's Defence Spending China's defence spending totalled $7.3 billion at the start of the 21st century. In 2011, that figure leapt to $25.8 billion while, during the same timeframe, its total defence budget soared from $22.5bn to $89.9bn and it's significant that, alongside these increases, US and EU defence spending has actually been on the descent.
China's massive defence spending drive now puts it second only to the US on the global stage although, at $600+bn a year, the Pentagon's budget still dominates.
In the last two months alone, China has launched a new ballistic missile (the reportedly Mach 25-capable DF-41), unveiled plans to deploy fleets of unmanned maritime drones, purchased 55 transport helicopters and apparently test-flown a new stealth jet.
Referring to opinions put forward by military analysts, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies attributes China's defence spending surge to its general economic bloom and its desire to make sure it can still access various resources and maintain its trade links to the rest of the world.

- Des navires militaires chinois vus à proximité d'îles japonaises
Mardi 16 Octobre 2012

_________________

China begins aircraft carrier flight training
BEIJING, CHINA (AP) — China has begun flight training on its first aircraft carrier, with photographs posted on websites Monday showing navy pilots practicing touch-and-go landing exercises.
Military enthusiast websites posted pictures of a J-15 fighter-bomber executing the maneuver, in which the plane makes brief contact with the flight deck before flying on. It wasn’t clear when the pictures were taken, and they did not appear on the Defense Ministry’s website or in official media.
The exercises are the latest move to provide a combat capability for the carrier, which was launched last month without aircraft or an accompanying battle group. The next step would be the launching and recovery of aircraft, a much trickier process that may be years away.
Chinese-produced Z-8 helicopters have also been practicing take-offs and landings on the carrier. Both are based on Russian and French designs.
Chinese pilots are believed to have been practicing carrier operations on mock flight decks located inland.
The carrier is the former Soviet Navy’s unfinished Varyag, which was towed from Ukraine in 1998 minus its engines, weaponry, and navigation systems. Christened the Liaoning, the province where its home port is located, the ship began sea trials in August 2011 following years of refurbishment.
The carrier’s launch underscores China’s ambitions to be a leading Asian naval power amid sharpening conflicts with its neighbors over disputed island chains in the South China and East China Seas.
Beijing hasn’t said what exact role it intends the carrier to fill other than helping safeguard China’s coastline and sea links. The Liaoning has also been portrayed as a kind of test platform for the future development of domestically built Chinese carriers. (end)

- Devastating power of China's J-15 ranks high in the world
The J-15, a heavy bomber independently developed by China, has the features of excellent carrier-based aircraft, but it still needs time for the aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, to become combat effective, a military expert disclosed in an interview recently.
The carrier-based aircraft refers to any naval planes based on an aircraft carrier or other warships, which is used to attack targets in the air, on and under the water and on ground and execute tasks of early warning, scouting, patrolling, convoying, mine-laying, mine clearance and vertical landing. It is used as one of the main weapons of naval air forces in battles and an important force to seize and maintain air and sea controls on the maritime battlefield.
It has also become the focus of attention of the outside world that whether the repeated "touch and go landing" in recent days means that J-15 will be delivered soon. To this question, Chinese naval expert Li Jie said as it is the first time for China to carry out taking off and landing training of a carrier-based aircraft, it still needs much time for J-15 to be delivered.
In addition, the external world also paid special attention to the performance of J-15. An expert revealed that J-15 is a fighter plane of or above the third generation. It has superior combat performance and characteristics of excellent carrier-based aircraft.
Du Wenlong, senior colonel and researcher of Chinese Academy of Military Sciences, told the reporter in an interview, "First, it is a heavy-duty carrier-based aircraft, which means that it has larger flying range and bigger bombs and fuel load, and its control range and devastating power rank high in the world. In addition, from the basic equipment of the heavy-duty carrier-based aircraft, the J-15 is compatible with various kinds of ammunition and has any functions a standard foreign carrier-based aircraft owns. The J-15 aircraft is able to accurately and efficiently run on the aircraft carrier and is also an important sign of integrated sea-air combat force of Chinese navy until now."
Talking about the significance of the carrier-based aircraft to the combat effectiveness of the aircraft carrier, Li Jie said, "The main fighting power of an aircraft carrier is embodied in the planes so the majority of countries regard the training of carrier-based aircraft as a top priority." english.peopledaily

- China building its own aircraft carrier
The deputy chief designer of China's aircraft carrier project suggested China was building its own carrier on Monday.
China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, refitted from a ship bought from the Ukraine, was delivered for training purposes to the People's Liberation Army in September.
Wu Xiaoguang, the designer, told Xinhua that more good news will come and they will not fail the people's expectations.
It's down to the country's needs as to how many carriers China should possess," said Wu, who is also a deputy to the 18th CPC National Congress, as quoted by Xinhua.
"What I can tell you is that Liaoning is only a start."
According to a report citing an unnamed senior Western military official, China can build its own carrier within 18 months with the assistance from Ukrainian experts.
Wu said China should rely on its own ability to ensure its due rights over the seas.
My election to be a deputy to the congress makes me feel strongly that the Party attaches great importance to defense technology and the defense industry."
J-15 carrier-based fighter aircraft have practiced take-off and landing on the Liaoning.
Recently, a fourth generation new prototype of the stealth fighter, the J-31, which experts said is suitable for aircraft carriers, also made its debut. chinadaily
