Syria's MiG-25s fly again
Video footage coming out of Syria has revealed that some of the country's MiG-25 'Foxbat' aircraft are operational.
The Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) acquired an unknown number of MiG-25s - one of the fastest military aircraft ever fielded - from the late 1970s in four variants: MiG-25P and MiG-25PD interceptors (the former was subsequently upgraded to the PD standard to become the MiG-25PDS), MiG-25RB reconnaissance bombers, and MiG-25PU trainers.
The SAAF was believed to have retired its MiG-25s by 2011. This impression was bolstered by satellite imagery showing numerous MiG-25s left in the open at Tiyas Air Base (also known as T4) rather than stored in hardened aircraft shelters.
Satellite imagery of the base taken on 3 November 2013 shows 28 MiG-25s, the majority of which are on parking areas around the runway, but 12 have been towed into the desert, suggesting they are derelict. Imagery taken on 1 January suggests none of the 28 aircraft were moved over the following two months.
Nevertheless, a video released by an insurgent group on 8 August 2012 suggested some MiG-25s might be operational at the Tadmur (Palmyra) Air Base, which is 60 km to the east of Tiyas. The video showed two seemingly active MiG-25PD/PDS interceptors and one MiG-25PU trainer on the tarmac at a base the group identified as Tadmur. No MiG-25RB reconnaissance aircraft were sighted.
This assertion was confirmed by the two videos released in March, both of which showed a lone MiG-25 flying over Uqayribat, a town 60 km north of Tiyas Air Base and a little further from Tadmur.
While it is unclear which MiG-25 variant can be seen in the footage, the group that released one of the videos claimed the aircraft being viewed had just returned from a bombing mission, meaning it would have to be a MiG-25RB, which has a limited - albeit inaccurate - ground-attack capability. ANALYSIS
It now seems the SAAF never formally phased out its MiG-25s, with most of them simply being set aside as scarce fuel was needed elsewhere. As its Su-22, Su-24 and MiG-23 fleets are worn down by their frequent usage and sporadic hits by insurgent air defences, the SAAF has increasingly started to use aircraft less suited for the air-to-ground role, such as its MiG-23MF/ML, MiG-29 and now even MiG-25RB aircraft.
It is also plausible the MiG-25 will return to the skies in order to protect SAAF ground-attack aircraft flying close to the Turkish border in the wake of the shooting down of a Syrian MiG-23 by a Turkish F-16. MiG-25PD/PDS interceptors armed with R-40RD semi-active radar homing and R-40TD infrared homing missiles might cause the Turkish Air Force to think twice before engaging Syrian planes again.

Syria uses SAMs to harass Turkish aircraft
Syria's harassment of the Turkish Air Force surged towards the end of April, when its surface-to-air missile systems 'locked on' to F-16s for more than 20 minutes, according to information released by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF). The TAF's assertion that Syrian SAMs "achieved radar lock" on its F-16s means the pilots were alerted by their radar warning systems that their aircraft were illuminated by a SAM system's target-engagement radar. The TAF has been complaining that Syrian SAMs are illuminating its aircraft since November, when it said S-75 (SA-2 'Guideline') and S-200 (SA-5 'Gammon') systems had locked on to F-16s patrolling inside Turkish airspace on three different days. The total illumination time increased to 120 seconds in December and then 360 seconds in January, according to the TAF, but there were no reported incidents in February. This changed in March, when Turkish F-16s were illuminated by SAM engagement radars for more than 1,700 seconds. Much of this activity occurred after an F-16 shot down a Syrian MiG-23 that the TAF said had strayed into Turkish airspace. The Syrians began using their latest air defence systems to harass Turkish F-16s even before that incident. The TAF reported that a Pantsyr-S1E (SA-22 'Greyhound') illuminated one of its aircraft for the first time on 5 March and a Buk-M2E (SA-17 'Grizzly') was used for the first time on 19 March. Even though they have shorter ranges than Syria's Soviet-era S-75s and S-200s, both these systems would be far more intimidating for Turkish pilots as they are significantly more sophisticated. Unlike the old semi-active radar-guided SAMs, the Buk-M2E does not need to keep a target continuously illuminated until it is hit by a missile so can simultaneously engage more than one target. At the same time, by using its Buk-M2Es and Pantsyr-S1Es Syria could be providing Turkey and its allies with useful intelligence on the radar frequencies used by the systems and their engagement envelopes. The harassment decreased over the first 20 days of April, when the TAF only reported engagements on two days. However, Syrian SAM systems have illuminated Turkish F-16s on all but one day between 21 April and 30 April, bringing the total illumination time up to 1,205 seconds. The first Turkish aircraft other than an F-16 - an Airtech CN235 - was illuminated on 23 April. The Turkish Air Force operates CN235s in the transport and surveillance roles, while the coastguard has a maritime surveillance variant.

Russia to Provide Syria with First Batch of Jet Trainers until End of Year
MOSCOW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russia plans to send the initial batch of the Yakovlev Yak-130 jet trainers to Syria until the end of 2014, with further plans to fully complete the contract for 36 aircraft in 2016, the Kommersant newspaper wrote Monday, citing a source close to Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport.
Damascus will receive nine aircraft until the end of this year, and in the next two years - 12 and 15 respectively, according to the informant.
"Thus, we will fulfill obligations under a previously signed contract for the supply of 36 Yak-130 jets," the newspaper quoted the source.
Last June, Kommersant wrote that Syria had transferred some $100 million of advance payment to Russia for the first six Yak-130 jets under a contract signed in December 2011. At that moment all Yak-130s were ready, waiting only for a political decision to install engines and avionics, and then to be sent to Syria, according to the RIA Novosti source back in the days.
Syria has been facing an internal armed conflict since March 2011. Russia has repeatedly stated that it supplies the country only with defensive weapons without violating international law.

Deliveries of Russian MiG Fighters to Syria Maintain Arms Balance in Region – Internal Opposition
MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) – A contract for the supply of Russian MiG fighters to Syria serves to strike a balance of arms and maintain peace in the region, a top leader of Syria’s Popular Front for Change and Liberation told RIA Novosti.
"The Soviet Union has always supplied weapons to Syria. Thus, some balance in the region was maintained to help us keep the peace, so I think that the contract is part of this historical strategy," one of the Popular Front’s leaders Qadri Jamil explained.
If someone tries to disrupt the contract under the pretext of the ongoing conflict in the country, "it will be unclear, illogical and unpersuasive because the transaction is not related to the internal events," according to Jamil.
Last weekend, MiG CEO Sergei Korotkov said the company was planning to supply 12 MiG-29M/M2 fighters to Syria in 2016-2017 under a contract concluded in 2007, but due to the ongoing war in the country there may be problems with the deliveries.
The civil war in Syria broke out in 2011, following the unrest that swept the Arab world three years ago, known as the Arab Spring. The war has since claimed up to 130,000 lives.

Russia cancels Syrian S-300 deal
The S-300 air defence systems that Syria ordered from Russia will probably now be scrapped after the cancellation of the deal, Konstantin Buryulin, the deputy director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, told the Interfax-AVN military news agency. "This decision [to cancel the deal] was made under the relevant UN sanctions by our political leadership," the 11 August report quoted Buryulin as saying. "If the equipment does not find an appropriate application, it will be disposed of." Russia has used its Security Council veto to prevent the imposition of a UN arms embargo on Damascus and has admitted delivering some S-300 components to the Syrians. However, the deal was put on hold after it brokered the agreement under which Damascus surrendered its chemical weapons. "We have delivered separate components, but the whole delivery has not been completed and for the moment we have suspended it," Russian President Vladimir Putin said in September 2013. Meanwhile, Iran continues its attempts to persuade Moscow to resurrect the S-300 deal that was cancelled after a UN arms embargo was imposed on the Islamic republic in 2010. "Iran considers the S-300 contract to be still active because the sanctions that were introduced under UN Security Council Resolution 1929 do not cover the S-300 contract," Interfax quoted Iran's ambassador to Russia as saying in July. "Representatives of our defence ministry have repeatedly held talks with their partners in Russia. I think they have good mutual understanding. I hope that we will receive an S-300 or a more modern system."
