La marine allemande a décidé de désarmer le 31 mars 2012 2 patrouilleurs rapides du Type 143A, le Nerz et le Dachs, ainsi que 2 chasseurs de mines du Type 333, le Kulmbach et le Laboe.
Les 4 bâtiments n’étaient déjà plus utilisés depuis le printemps dernier et leurs équipages avaient été affectés sur d’autres bâtiments. Ils ont plus de 20 ans : le Nerz est entré en service le 14 juillet 1983, le Dachs le 22 mars 1984, le Laboe le 7 décembre 1989 et le Kulmbach le 23 mai 1990.
La marine allemande a déjà subi des réductions considérables de format depuis la fin de la Guerre Froide. Les 70 chasseurs de mines et les 40 patrouilleurs rapides dont elle disposait il y a 20 ans, ont été réduits à respectivement 20 et 10 bâtiments.
Ces bâtiments avaient été utilisés lors de missions de l’OTAN et de l’ONU en Méditerranée.
Le personnel libéré par ces désarmements permettra aux bâtiments restants d’avoir plus d’un équipage, augmentant ainsi leur capacité à être déployés.

Frégate allemande du type F125 crédits : BLOHM + VOSS
Les chantiers Blohm + Voss de Hambourg ont procédé à la mise sur cale de la première unité du type F125, nouvelle génération de frégates destinées à la marine allemande. D'un poids de 290 tonnes, un premier bloc de 23 mètres de long, 18 mètres de large et 7 mètres de hauteur, appelé à constituer une partie du fond de coque de la moitié arrière, a été posé le 2 novembre. Le futur Bade-Wurtemberg doit être baptisé en février 2013 et être livré en mars 2016. Il sera suivi par trois sisterships, qui devraient être nommés Nordrhein-Westfalen, Saarland et Sachsen-Anhalt, livrables en février 2017, janvier 2018 et décembre 2018. Longs de 149.6 mètres pour une largeur de 18.8 mètres, ces bâtiments afficheront un déplacement de 7000 tonnes en charge. Dotés d'une propulsion CODLAG (Combined Diesel eLectric And Gasturbine), ils disposeront de quatre moteurs diesels de 2900 kW chacun, deux moteurs électriques d'une puissance unitaire de 4500 kW et une turbine à gaz de 20 MW. La vitesse maximale devrait être supérieure à 26 noeuds.
Ces nouvelles frégates ont été spécialement conçues pour être déployée sur de longues périodes dans des zones de crise, nécessitant une grande autonomie et des moyens d'action conséquents, notamment vers la terre. A ce titre, les F125 ont été étudiées pour pouvoir fonctionner 5000 heures par an et rester déployées jusqu'à 24 mois, soit une disponibilité considérablement améliorée par rapport aux dernières frégates allemandes, du type F124 (classe Sachsen). Livrés en 2004 et 2006, ces trois bâtiments peuvent en effet naviguer 2500 heures par an et effectuer des déploiements d'une durée maximale de 9 mois. Afin d'améliorer la longévité opérationnelle des F125, Blohm + Voss et Lürssen, les deux chantiers allemands chargés de réaliser ces navires, ont travaillé à rendre la frégate plus robuste et à en optimiser la maintenance, qui sera réduite par rapport aux générations précédentes. Le développement des automatismes a, dans le même temps, permis de réduire l'équipage de moitié, soit 120 hommes, contre 235 pour les F124. Afin de pouvoir être déployé sur de longues périodes allant jusqu'à deux ans, chaque bâtiment comprendra deux équipages, qui se relaieront à bord.
Intervention littorale, contre terrorisme, lutte contre les trafics illicites et la piraterie... Les F125 ont été imaginées pour répondre aux nouvelles menaces auxquelles sont confrontées les marines sur différents océans, les zones sensibles étant actuellement situées dans l'océan Indien et le golfe Persique, en Asie du sud-est, dans le golfe de Guinée et vers les Antilles. La nécessité de pouvoir loger et mettre en oeuvre des commandos a, par exemple, été prise en compte dès le départ. Ainsi, chaque F125 pourra accueillir, en plus de son équipage, 50 passagers. La frégate disposera en outre de quatre embarcations rapides de 10 mètres, pouvant être mise en oeuvre rapidement afin de mener des interceptions en mer ou des raids nautiques. Le hangar pourra loger deux hélicoptères de type NH90 (et des drones), des logements supplémentaires étant prévus pour héberger 20 hommes du détachement aéronautique (soit une capacité totale de 190 personnes à bord). L'armement est, quant à lui, très tourné vers la terre. Il comprendra 8 missiles antinavire (avec une capacité contre cibles côtières), deux systèmes surface-air RAM et une tourelle de 127mm Light Weight produite par OTO-Melara. Dotée de munitions Vulcano, cette pièce pourrait tirer à 70 kilomètres.
Alors qu'un emplacement est disponible pour l'installation ultérieure de missiles de croisière, la F125 sera armée contre les menaces asymétriques (embarcations suicides, plongeurs, engins explosifs artisanaux...). Ainsi, l'artillerie secondaire sera particulièrement conséquente, soit deux canons de 27mm et cinq mitrailleuses de 12.7mm (HITROLE-NL Mod517), tous télé-opérés. Côté détection, la F125 bénéficiera d'un système de veille radar, optique et infrarouge à 360°, comprenant notamment un réseau de 14 caméras. Le radar principal sera du type TRS-3D, avec quatre antennes planes assurant une détection en temps réel tout autour du bâtiment. L'ensemble des senseurs seront gérés par un nouveau système de combat, les F125 bénéficiant également d'une nouvelle ergonomie pour le Central Opérations. La marine allemande va donc disposer, à partir de 2016, de très beaux bâtiments à même de répondre aux besoins des longs déploiements outre-mer pour assurer des missions de patrouille, de surveillance et d'intervention sur un large spectre de menaces. Destinées à remplacer les 8 frégates de la classe Bremen (type F122A), les F125 s'ajouteront aux quatre frégates du type F123 et aux trois frégates du type F124 déjà en service dans la flotte allemande.

The German Navy – The Way Forward?
One of the largest fleets in NATO, the German Navy appears to have escaped most of the recent cuts imposed by the government’s austerity plan, since construction of the new vessels and upgrades for existing platforms seems to continue. However, the planned reduction of 60 percent in its defense budget could have negative effect in the future, if the government decides to press on with the cuts. To continue operating under these restricted budgetary constraints the Navy may have to reduce its mission sets, whilst assuming a reduced ‘asymmetric’ role focused on counter-piracy, peacemaking and peacekeeping operations, rather than full scale, high intensity operations.
In addition to taking part in current NATO activities the German Navy deploys routinely at the Baltic Sea and is taking part in many international operations, including peacekeeping operations, security and counter piracy activities, as far as Africa and the Indian Ocean. In total, there are about 90 commissioned warships in the German Navy including 43 auxiliary ships; the total displacement of the navy is 220,000 tons. In addition to this, the German Navy and the Royal Danish Navy are in cooperation in the “Ark Project”. This agreement made the Ark Project responsible for the strategic sealift of German armed forces where the full-time charter of three roll-on-roll-off cargo and troop ships are ready for deployments. In addition, these ships are also kept available for the use of the other European NATO countries. The three vessels have a combined displacement of 60,000 tons. Including these ships, the total ships’ displacement available to the Deutsche Marine is 280,000 tons.

The German Navy operates two flotillas, the surface fleet which includes 15 frigates of three types and Type 212 subs, with a squadron of ten fast missile boats operating in the Baltic sea. In recent years the German Navy went through major modernization, with the fielding of the F-124 class frigates, K130 corvettes and Type 212 submarines, all locally built by the Blohm & Voss, Lürssen, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Howaldtswerke Deutschland Werct (HDW) shipyards.
The seeming stability does not reflect years of decline in new orders, which almost brought the HDW submarine builder to a standstill and drove TKMS to sell most of its naval and commercial surface shipbuilding assets to the UAE in 2009. The company agreed to establish a “close strategic partnership” and Memorandum of Understanding with the Abu Dhabi MAR (ADM) group in the United Arab Emirates. The proposed sale followed related purchases in Germany by Abu Dhabi MAR, and other recent shipyard sales by TKMS. The net effect was a restructuring of Germany’s naval shipbuilding industry.
The envisioned agreement involved a 50/50 joint venture to build naval surface ships, with TKMS retaining a lead role and know-how in all projects with the German Navy and NATO partners, while ADM was responsible for the Middle East and North Africa. At the same time, however, Abu Dhabi MAR would acquiring 80% of TKMS’ key surface ship firms: Blohm and Voss Shipyards, Blohm and Voss Repair, and Blohm and Voss Industries. That deal has largely fallen through in 2011, leaving TKMS naval assets “in play” again.
Today, the German Navy maintains two operates 15 frigates of three types – the Bremen (, Brandenburg (4) and Sachsen class (3), which is also the newest (F124 class) air defense frigates. In November 2011 Germany laid the keel of the first of four F125 next generation frigates ‘stealth design’, likely to be one of the world’s largest class of frigates with a displacement in excess of 7,200 tonnes, expected to enter service in 2016 in time to replace the first Bremen class frigates. Although the crew is to be reduced to 120 sailors, instead of the planned 235 crew, the vessels will operate with the “two crew concept”, as the vessel is capable of long endurance at sea. Completion of the F125 fleet is anticipated by December 2018.
The German frigates carry MBDA MM-38 Exocet anti-ship missiles, Raytheon RIM-162 Evolved Sea-Sparrow Missiles developed under a multinational NATO cooperation and RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missiles built under a German-U.S. cooperation also led by Raytheon with Diehl BGT Defence as its German partner. The vessels are also equipped with advanced radars, sophisticated combat information systems built by EADS and combined ESM/ECM supplied by the UK.
New Shipbuilding Programs

While all shipbuilding programs are exclusive to Germany, the weapon systems, parts of the radar and other electronics subsystems are being developed as part of international cooperations, to reduce development cost.
The F125 program will deliver four ships between 2014 and 2018. The program focuses on long endurance vessel optimized for asymmetric warfare and peacetime operation far from its home port. As such, the 5,500 ton vessel will have a crew of up to 120 personnel, about half of the crew that were required to operate previous generation frigates. The vessel will also be able to support special forces teams of 50 personnel.
The navy is in the process of inducting the first two of five new Braunschweig Class K130 corvettes, based on the MEKO A design, with three more under construction. These corvettes are supplementing the squadron of fast missile boats and will better support typical operations assumed by the German Navy, including anti-piracy support. K130 is also designed for a lean crew, operated by a complement of 65. These corvettes represent a mix of systems and technologies from different European and Scandinavian makers – the radar is made by EADS in Germany, as well as the ESM and countermeasure systems. The command, control, communications and optronic fire control systems comes from Thales Netherlands; the 76/62mm gun is an Italian system from Oto-Melara while the main weapon system is the Swedish RBS15 Mk3. The later is a surface launched fire-and-forget long range anti-ship and land attack missile, developed by the Saab Group. To gain economy of scale and share the program’s life cycle cost, Germany, Poland and Sweden have decided to collaborate and equip their new vessels with the new missile. Marketed jointly by Diehl and Saab, RBS-15 Mk3 is being offered as a future armament of its frigates and potential replacement of earlier Exocet and Harpoon missiles. A squadron of ten Gepard class Fast Missile Boats, equipped with MM38 Exocet anti-ship missiles is also operational, but the number of boats has being reduced gradually. Under the 2010 announced budget cuts, the Navy will retire its Gepard class fast missile boats. The first vessels, Nerz and Dachs will be retired by March 2012. Other Type 143A boats retained as operational performed training in the Baltic Sea in November 2011.
Modernizing the Submarine Force U-212 class submarine U-34 (S-184) at Bremen, 2007
Until recently the German Navy operated a flotilla of ten submarines, based at Eckernförde. Up to 2010 the German submarine fleet consisted of modernized Type 206A diesel-electric submarines, which were originally commissioned between 1973 and 1975, and upgraded since 1992, and four new hybrid diesel-electric/fuel cell air independent propulsion (AIP) Type 212A submarines, which were commissioned between 2004 and 2006. In 2010 the remaining Type 206A subs were retired from active service as part of the Bundeswehr budget cuts. Current plans foresee a total of six Type 212A boats, with the final two vessels projected to become operational by 2012 and 2013 respectively. The original plan was to construct a total of eight Type 212 vessels, but in January 2004 the German Defense Ministry announced that no more submarines would be ordered until 2016.
Germany possesses a manufacturing capability at HDW for a diesel-electric special export-only submarine, the type 800 Dolphin class and has exported numerous variants of these, Turkey and Israel being amongst its customers. This is perceived as a very capable conventional submarine, with various shipyards offering upgrades.
The German Navy’s main roles, in conjunction with other NATO navies or as part of a UN force, are conflict prevention, crisis management, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operations. As a result of the 212A submarine’s stealth capabilities, it is also able to carry out effective covert intelligence and reconnaissance missions. German submarines were deployed as part of peacekeeping operations in the Adriatic Sea during the mid-1990s, and as part of NATO operation “Active Endeavour” and support to the US-led conflict in Afghanistan “Enduring Freedom”.
In support of new operational priorities, there are future plans to equip the 212A with a land-attack capability. The Interactive Defense and Attack System for Submarines (IDAS), currently under development by Diehl BGT Defence, HDW and Kongsberg of Norway, uses a wire-guided missile to engage helicopters and mobile targets on shore. The third Type 212 submarine, U33 was selected as the platform for testing the new weapon. The missile made the first flight in June 2008, successfully launched from the torpedo tubes of the submerged submarine.
Mine Countermeasures Fleet
The German Navy operates five Type 352 minesweepers equipped with hull mounted DSQS-11 mine detection sonar and the ‘Troika Plus’ system, comprising a manned mothership and unmanned Seahound (seal) vessels being the lead element. Some of the older Type 333 (converted fast gun boats) are currently being retired.

Un nouveau sous-marin pour la marine allemande

Les chantiers HDW de Kiel ont achevé un nouveau sous-marin destiné à la marine allemande. Il s'agit de l'U35, cinquième unité du type 212A. Le bâtiment, qui a été baptisé le mois dernier, rejoindra en 2012 ses quatre aînés (U31, U32, U33 et U34), mis en service entre 2005 et 2007. Le nouveau sous-marin fait partie d'une série de deux sous-marins additionnels du type 212A, commandés en septembre 2006. Il sera suivi par un sistership, l'U36, dont la mise en service est attendue en 2013. Par rapport aux premiers bâtiments de la série, les deux nouveaux sous-marins allemands bénéficient de différentes évolutions. Ils intègrent, notamment, de nouveaux équipements (systèmes de communication, sonars, système de commande et de contrôle, mât optronique remplaçant le périscope), alors que les bâtiments ont été adaptés pour embarquer des forces spéciales et sont « tropicalisés », afin d'être déployés en eaux chaudes. Long de 56 mètres pour un diamètre de 7 mètres, le U35 affiche un déplacement de 1450 tonnes en plongée. Armé par un équipage de 28 hommes, il peut atteindre la vitesse de 20 noeuds et dispose, en plus de sa propulsion diesel-électrique, d'un système de propulsion anaérobie Permasyn. Ce dispositif, qui utilise des piles à combustible, lui permet de rester de longues périodes en plongée, sans avoir besoin de faire surface pour faire tourner ses moteurs diesels et recharger ses batteries. Côté armement, le sous-marin peut mettre en oeuvre 12 torpilles lourdes DM-2 A4 lancées depuis 6 tubes de 533mm. Des bâtiments dérivés, du type 214, ont été vendus à l'export, notamment en Corée du sud, en Grèce et en Turquie.

German air force plans to bring 24 Eurofighter jets for training at Holloman
The German air force plans to bring a new plane to Holloman Air Force Base on which to train, according to Col. Frank Kiesel, commander of the German Air Force Flying Training Center, who came to the regular Alamogordo City Commission meeting Tuesday to make the announcement.
Kiesel said the German airmen at the GAFFTC train to fly the Phantom and Tornado, but the German air force plans to move Eurofighter training to Holloman as well.
Kiesel said the German air force is restructuring. The German air force has been training pilots in the U.S. since 1958, and at Holloman since 1992. Kiesel said the GAFFTC currently has more than 600 airmen at the base, plus their dependents. He said the GAFFTC graduates 30 to 40 students per year.
Kiesel said GAFFTC instructors are usually assigned to Holloman for three years and often request to return because they like the Tularosa Basin.
"The German air force has a long future at Holloman," Kiesel said.
Kiesel estimated the Eurofighter will increase personnel at the GAFFTC by 30 to 40. He said 24 Eurofighters are planned to locate at Holloman.
Kiesel said he could not commit to a timeline for when the Eurofighter will arrive at Holloman. It will first go to bases in Germany, then come for training here. He said the German military still has decisions to make, and infrastructure must be built at the GAFFTC to accommodate the new plane.

New heavy equipment transporter vehicle to enter service by late 2012
16:42 GMT, December 8, 2011 Germany’s Bundeswehr has contracted with Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles to supply it with HX 81 tractors. Thus, for the first time ever, German troops will have a fleet of protected heavy equipment transporter vehicles at their disposal.
Worth around €12 million, the order encompasses twelve vehicles as well as a training package, tools and spare parts. By the end of 2013, the Bundeswehr will have taken delivery of all twelve of the new HX81 tractors from RMMV.
The vehicle is based on an 8x8 MAN HX-series chassis, long since put to the test by the British armed forces. Careful account of Bundeswehr requirements was taken right from the development phase: a Euro 5 V8 engine with an output of 500 kW/ 680hp gives the vehicle the forward propulsion needed to the move its permissible gross train weight of up to 130 tonnes. In response to the hazards of modern military operations, the driver’s cab provides up to four soldiers with a high degree of protection against ballistic, landmine and IED threats.
Germany’s new tractor-trailer systems will be used for transporting tracked and wheeled vehicles, containers and heavy equipment. Two cable winches with a pulling force up to 20 tonnes each enable loading and unloading defective equipment. A selfrecovery winch with a traction force of eight tonnes is mounted to the front of the vehicle. Designed for maximum mobility, the tractor-trailer system will also be able to operate for long distances in areas with poor infrastructure.
The tractor-trailer system consists of a tractor from RMMV and two different low bed semi-trailers for carrying various payloads, which the Bundeswehr is procuring separately. A German Army Leopard 2 tank moves into firing position in the Grafenwoehr Training Area during Operation Iron Panzer Dec. 8, 2011. Iron Panzer is a combined live-fire exercise between the U.S. Army’s 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, and the German Bundeswehr’s 4th Company, 104th Panzer Battalion. This is the first combined live-fire exercise that will incorporate both the German Leopard 2 tank and the American Stryker Mobile Gun System.

Early in the evening of January 2 the first four F4 Phantom fighters of the German Air Force landed in the Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force (LITHAF) to patrol the Baltic airspace for the oncoming four months.
On January 4 the official changeover ceremony of the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission will take place at the LITHAF Šiauliai Air Base. After a four-month tour of duty Danish Air Contingent will be replaced by Germans with six F-4 Phantom fighters. The ceremony will be attended by Lithuanian, German, Danish, Estonian, and Latvian military delegates and civilian representatives of the city and district of Šiauliai.
Germany will protect security of the Baltic skies for the fifth time.

, Brandenburg (4) and Sachsen class (3), which is also the newest (F124 class) air defense frigates. In November 2011 Germany laid the keel of the first of four F125 next generation frigates ‘stealth design’, likely to be one of the world’s largest class of frigates with a displacement in excess of 7,200 tonnes, expected to enter service in 2016 in time to replace the first Bremen class frigates. Although the crew is to be reduced to 120 sailors, instead of the planned 235 crew, the vessels will operate with the “two crew concept”, as the vessel is capable of long endurance at sea. Completion of the F125 fleet is anticipated by December 2018.
