German KFOR soldiers guard the Jarinje border crossing with Serbia in the north of Kosovo on September 16, 2011. Kosovo and EU police on September 16 were dispatched at two disputed border crossings with Serbia -- Jarinje and Brnjak in the north of Kosovo -- in a move that raised fears of a fresh wave of ethnic violence in a tense Balkan region. The action came two months after clashes that left one dead which erupted when Pristina dispatched special police to take over the posts to enforce a ban on imports from Serbia. The Serbian ban was imposed in protest at Kosovo's declaration of independence from Belgrade, which Belgrade, backed by Russia, has refused to recognise. NATO peacekeepers KFOR have since manned the posts.

Bombardier’s Global 5000 Jet Handed Over for Operation with the German Ministry of Defence
Published September 22, 2011 | By Rob Vogelaar
Today, the first of four high-speed Global 5000 jets was handed over to the German Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) Special Mission Wing to be operated for VIP transport and Medical Evacuation (MedEvac) flights. The special ceremony in Berlin, Germany, was attended by government officials and executives from Bombardier, German Operating Aircraft Leasing GmbH & CO.KG (GOAL), Rolls-Royce Germany, Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services and Lufthansa Technik.
The Global 5000 jets were selected by the Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement in Germany (BWB) as part of a broader agreement regarding the modernization of the MoD’s Special Mission Wing. Lufthansa Technik AG of Hamburg, Germany, is the prime contractor for the overall agreement, which also includes the purchase of Airbus aircraft and technical support for all new aircraft types. The new Global 5000 aircraft will replace the MoD’s existing fleet of Challenger 601 aircraft.
“Bombardier has a long standing relationship with the German Ministry of Defence, a Challenger aircraft operator for more than 20 years. We are delighted that they have once again selected Bombardier aircraft for their Special Mission Wing and to fly German government and parliamentary officials,” said Michel Bourgeois, President, Specialized and Amphibious Aircraft & Military Aviation Training, Bombardier Aerospace. “The Global 5000 jet was chosen by the German government as the best suited aircraft to meet the BWB tender’s 12-seat jet requirement because of its many attributes, including its intercontinental range and ability to reconfigure the interior to MedEvac capabilities when required.”
Bombardier’s Global Completion Centre in Montréal, Canada, is responsible for completing the four Global 5000 aircraft, and Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services in Berlin, Germany, has been contracted by the prime contractor, Lufthansa Technik, to provide technical support for the jets.

German MPA Finished First Operational Flight
Djibouti — A German Navy Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) has been in Djibouti since Sunday participating in the EUNAVFOR mission ATALANTA.
As the "flying eye" it significantly contributes to fighting piracy and securing the shipping lanes off the Horn of Africa. Equipped with modern electro-optical sensors the MPRA delivers an indispensable contribution to the reconnaissance in the area of operation.
On Thursday morning the light grey colored Lockheed P-3C ORION launched for the first time into the morning sky. The aircraft patrolled along the bright yellow beaches of the east coast of Somalia. "Our main task today is to evaluate the known pirate camps and to report any preparations made", states the commanding officer of the P-3C detachment in Djibouti, Commander Matthias Elvert.
After about nine hours the first mission was accomplished. At the end of the day a total of almost 2,000 miles were flown. "This is approximately the distance from the North of Germany to Sicily and back", said operator senior chief Sven G.
With roaring engines the pilot rolled the ORION to its final parking position following the instructions of the cross service soldier. In the Mission Support Center, the crew is already expected. All documents are submitted for evaluation and the debriefing is held before the crew is being released from its duty.
The next flight is already being prepared and the propellers of the ORION will start soon for a new mission.

German Air Force Unveils Powerful Spy Plane
Northrop Grumman
On Wednesday, the German air force unveiled the latest addition to its fleet: the "Euro Hawk," a state-of-the-art spy drone. The reconnaissance aircraft can fly non-stop for 30 hours in the stratosphere without having to refuel and its on-board sensors can penetrate clouds and sandstorms.
For reasons of data protection and privacy, your IP address will only be stored if you are a registered user of Facebook and you are currently logged in to the service. For more detailed information, please click on the "i" symbol.
After 10 years of planning and development, the Bundeswehr on Wednesday publicly unveiled its most recent acquisition of next-generation reconnaissance technology: a powerful new drone designed to bolster its surveillance capabilities on the battle field. The deployment in 2012 of the "Euro Hawk" is expected to launch a new era for Germany's armed forces.
The unmanned drone is similar to the spy plane introduced a decade ago in the United States military, the "Global Hawk," but with European modifications, Lieutenant Colonel Holger Neumann, a Luftwaffe spokesman, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. Both models are strictly used for surveillance purposes.
Although their plane may look like a clone of its American counterpart and includes much of the same technology, defense contractor Cassidian, a subsidiary of the European aerospace giant EADS, is equipping the aircraft with German-engineered sensors and surveillance equipment before delivering the final Euro Hawks to the Bundeswehr.
The drone will be able detect potential targets on the ground while simultaneously eavesdropping on wireless communications from cruising altitudes of up to 60,000 feet (18,288 meters) -- well above that of any commercial airliners, which generally fly at 30,000-40,000 feet. It is also designed to eavesdrop on telephone calls and text messages and to pick up radio and TV signals, among other data. That information is then transmitted in real-time to a control center on the ground in Germany. The on-board sensors are powerful enough to penetrate heavy cloud covering and sandstorms to capture signals.
A 'Vacuum Cleaner for Information'
Some have dubbed the machine a "huge vacuum cleaner for information," while others, like Rüdiger Knöpfel, the director of the German military's Euro Hawk program at the Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement, called the move a "milestone" in the history of the country's armed forces. The Euro Hawk is expected to far surpass the capabilities of Germany's existing unmanned aircraft. Reconnaissance is a core challenge for armed forces, Knöpfel said, and "currently we are deaf when it comes to electronic reconnaissance." That could change with the deployment of Euro Hawk.
The drone's technical details alone are impressive. The unmanned aircraft weighs 15 tons and is built of carbon fiber. It is 14.5 meters long and has a wing span of around 40 meters (131 feet). It can travel up to 25,000 kilometers non-stop, meaning it could fly from Berlin to Tokyo and back without having to land. But that's only one example. The drone's real future area of deployment is likely to be in war and crisis regions like Afghanistan, where the Bundeswehr is deployed.
Although the aircraft components for the first prototype were officially completed in 2009, the Euro Hawk didn't take off for its maiden journey until June 29, 2010. It was produced in California by Northrop Grumman, the American contractor that manufactures the drone and has created a joint venture with EADS to build the European version. Finally, on July 21, 2001, a prototype of the machine landed at the Luftwaffe air force base in Manching, Germany, after flying more than 10,000 kilometers (6,213 miles) in a 24 hour-long "hand-off" flight, during which American and German operators observed the drone's progress from ground control installations in their respective countries.
By next summer, the Luftwaffe is expected to begin operations with the drone as it carries out reconnaissance missions. Eleven German pilots have already received training in the United States. In total, the Bundeswehr plans to acquire a fleet of five Euro Hawks.

UPDATE 2-Germany wants to cut defence orders
Oct 18 (Reuters) - German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere plans deep cuts to Germany's military orders as part of sweeping reforms to the Bundeswehr, including a reduction in the order for Eurofighter jets, according to an internal document obtained by Reuters.
The note from De Maiziere to parliament's defence committee details plans to cut by 37 to 140 the order for Eurofigher aircraft, to reduce an order for Puma tanks to 350 from 410 and to slash an order for Tiger combat helicopters to 40 from 80.
The minister also wants to reduce the number of NH-90 helicopters to 80 from 120.
The cuts would free up funds for the ministry, allowing it to improve efficiency within the armed forces, De Maiziere wrote.
The aircraft affected are made by the consortium of European aerospace and defence group EADS , Britain's BAE Systems and Italy's Finmeccanica The Puma tanks are made by Germany's Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW).
De Maiziere said in the paper he would meet defence industry representatives on Wednesday to discuss the orders, and he was sure a mutually satisfactory solution could be found.
He had complained in the past that much of Germany's defence budget was hamstrung by large orders, some of which dated from the cold war.
Germany plans to reduce the number of its troops to 65,000 from 185,000 and this year ended compulsory military service. Germany has around 5,200 soldiers deployed as part of NATO's mission in Afghanistan, most of them in the north.
Further cuts detailed in de Maiziere's paper included a reduction to the order for drones to 16 from 22, and for high-flying unmanned Global Hawks to 4 from 6.

CASSIDIAN completes development of most powerful ground surveillance radar worldwide
The new radar system closes a gap in the German Army’s capabilities
Cassidian, the defence and security division of EADS, has developed the world’s most powerful radar for battlefield surveillance for use by the German Armed Forces. Owing to a combination of the latest technologies, this ground surveillance radar under the German Army designation “Bodenüberwachungsradar” (BÜR) can track movements on the ground, in the air close to the ground and over water, with previously unattainable precision, speed and reliability.
After being accepted by the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) and a supplementary testing by the army, the ground surveillance radar development project was successfully completed with the delivery of two system demonstrators and a set of mobile workshop equipment. This proves the feasibility of the system and shows that the precondition for the planned procurement of 48 production BÜR systems are met.
“The BÜR system represents a quantum leap in the area of battle field surveillance,” explained Dr. Elmar Compans, Head of Cassidian’s Sensors & Electronic Warfare unit. Compans said, “With this, the German Army can close a gap in its capabilities in the area of intelligence gathering and reconnaissance, thus significantly increasing its performance and the protection of its soldiers.”
The BÜR system is based on the latest electronic scan control technology “AESA” (Active Electronically Scanned Array), which opens up completely new possibilities for detection and surveillance. Thanks to delay-free electronic beam scanning, the radar can perform multiple reconnaissance tasks at the same time, thus achieving a much greater level of efficiency and reliability in comparison to mechanically scanned radars. Each BÜR system can therefore assume the tasks of several conventional radars.
BÜR will be installed for mobile use on the DINGO 2 armoured vehicle manufactured by the Munich-based company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. Operation of the system and the radar is fully effected from the protected interior of the vehicle, without the crew having to leave the vehicle. The high performance of the radar is largely due to the great number of transmitter and receiver (T/R) modules in the antenna, which are made from special HF-capable materials and are developed and manufactured at Cassidian’s Ulm site under clean-room conditions. Cassidian is the pioneer of this technology in Europe.

UPDATE 1-EADS to ask Germany to order Talarion drones-source
FRANKFURT, Nov 2 (Reuters) - EADS is prepared to waive penalties for a cut to orders for the Eurofighter jet if Germany promises to order Talarion drones instead, a person familiar with the matter said.
"That is a possible outcome of the upcoming negotiations," the person told Reuters on Wednesday.
German daily Financial Times Deutschland earlier cited two people familiar with the matter as saying that Stefan Zoller, head of EADS' defense and security unit Cassidian, will propose such a deal to German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere.
According to an internal document obtained by Reuters last month, Maiziere plans deep cuts to Germany's military orders as part of sweeping reforms to the Bundeswehr -- its armed forces -- including a reduction in Eurofighter orders.
The note detailed plans to cut by 37 to 140 the order for Eurofigher aircraft, to reduce an order for Puma tanks to 350 from 410 and to slash an order for Tiger combat helicopters to 40 from 80. De Maiziere also wants to reduce the number of NH-90 helicopters to 80 from 120.
A spokesman for Cassidian declined to comment on the matter.
"The defense ministry will talk to us from November about how the planned spending cuts can be balanced," he said.
Cassidian sees the defense cuts putting at risk its main plant in the southern German town of Manching, which has 4,000 employees. Some 220 maintenance workers there have already been on shortened working hours since September, the spokesman said.
EADS has spent years developing the Talarion unmanned aerial vehicle at its own expense in the hope of winning an order from the project's instigators France, Germany and Spain.
However, France's Dassault Aviation and Britain's BAE Systems have stepped up plans for their own drone under a Franco-British defense pact signed last year, provoking anger and frustration from EADS.
