(Reuters) - The Iraqi government is seeking to buy 36 advanced F-16 fighters from the U.S., American military officials familiar with the request told the Wall Street Journal.
This move could help Iraq reduce its reliance on U.S. air power and potentially allow more American forces to withdraw from the country than had been proposed.
The F-16, made by Lockheed Martin Corp, is the most sophisticated weapons system Iraq has attempted to purchase so far.
Late in July, the U.S. Department of Defense had approved up to $10.7 billion in arms sales for Iraq, including a $2.16 billion sale of M1A1 Abrams tanks built by General Dynamics Corp.
The U.S. recently announced F-16 sales to Morocco and Romania. Those sales, each for roughly $100 million per plane with training, related equipment and support included, offer an indication of how lucrative the Iraq deal could be for Lockheed Martin and its suppliers.
Iraq now appears determined to significantly expand the air power of its military, which has become more competent and confident in recent months but depends heavily on the U.S. for air support.
Iraq quickly has become one of the biggest weapons buyers in the world as it seeks to strengthen and professionalise its fighting force.
No one was available at the U.S. Department of Defense for comment.

Tiens je remarque qu'ils ont le Pantsir avec le Radar Janus, finalement c'est pas la version spéciale, exclusive, réservé uniquement a l'armée algérienne.

DAMAS, 1er octobre - RIA Novosti

Iraqi F-16s being delivered to pilots training in Arizona
WASHINGTON — Iraqi fighter pilots unable to train in their own country because of the Islamic State insurgency will soon be flying brand new Iraqi jets over the American Southwest, the Pentagon announced Monday.
Starting next month, the United States will begin delivering eight of 36 F-16s that Iraq has on order to an Air National Guard facility in Arizona, officials said.
The Pentagon initially planned to send the jets to Iraq’s Balad air base, but the base has been under threat from insurgents who captured broad swaths of the country during the spring and summer.
“The security situation still does not allow that, so the initial group of F-16s we are now going to deliver to Tucson, Arizona, where there are Iraqi pilots currently in the training pipeline,” Defense Department spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters.
Fourteen Iraqis have already begun training on U.S. F-16s, four more are flying trainer jets as they prepare to graduate to F-16s and six pilots are awaiting flight training as they study at the Defense Language Institute, Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said.
Three Iraqi F-16s will reach the Iraqi pilots in Arizona next month, with an additional plane arriving each month until May, Warren said. The pilots will begin flying the planes in January, he said.
While training in the Iraq-owned jets, the pilots will not be allowed to use live munitions, Stefanek said. But they can do live fire exercises while in the U.S.-owned jets they have been flying, she said.
The training mission in Arizona could last into 2016, Stefanek said.
“It’s meant to keep them proficient until the training can take place elsewhere,” she said. “It’s a temp solution until the security situation in Iraq is stabilized and the Iraqi aircraft can be delivered there.”
There are currently no plans to put the jets or the pilots into combat against the Islamic State in Iraq, where the United States has been carrying out airstrikes since August 8, Warren said.

Iraq - Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS)
WASHINGTON, Nov 12, 2014 - The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Iraq for Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $97 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today.
The Government of Iraq has requested a possible sale of up to 2,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS), weapon and test support equipment, spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, transportation, U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistical and program support. The estimated cost is $97 million.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a strategic partner. This proposed sale directly supports the Government of Iraq and serves the interests of the people of Iraq and the United States.
The proposed sale will improve Iraq’s capacity to sustain security operations and strengthen its internal and external defense capabilities. The sale of APKWS will increase the Iraqi Army Aviation Command’s ability to carry out operations against terrorist forces while significantly reducing risk to civilians.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The principal contractor will be BAE Systems in Nashua, New Hampshire. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
The proposed sale will involve multiple trips to Iraq involving U.S. government and contractor representatives for approximately 3 years for program management, program and technical reviews, training, maintenance support, and site surveys.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.
All questions regarding this proposed Foreign Military Sale should be directed to the State Department's Bureau of Political Military Affairs, Office of Congressional and Public Affairs, pm-cpa@state.gov.

Iraq wins approval to buy $800m C-130 sustainment package
Lockheed Martin has been given a green light to sell the Iraqi Air Force (IAF) $800 million worth of sustainment support and spare parts for its fleet of C-130E and C-130J transport aircraft.
The foreign military sales approval was made by the US State Department and announced on 26 November by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). The sale is not yet final, but could include sustainment and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support worth up to $800 million.
DSCA pointed out that fulfilling the potential contract will not require posting additional US government or contractor personnel to Iraq, where a coalition effort to destroy Islamic State militants is ongoing. Flightglobal's 2014 World Air Forces directory says the IAF operates three C-130E and six C-130J aircraft.
The IAF’s “limited maintenance capability necessitates the need for continued contractor logistics support”, DSCA says. “The continued support will assist the IAF in continuing to use the aircraft to provide humanitarian relief operations in various locations.”
Iraq requested a sustainment package that would extend the life of its C-130s for five years beyond 2015, according to DSCA. The deal will include operational, intermediate, and depot level maintenance, spare and repair parts, support equipment, repair and return, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment and US government and contractor logistics support services.
“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a strategic partner,” DSCA says. “This proposed sale directly supports the Government of Iraq and serves the interests of the people of Iraq and the United States.”
