SOURCE:Flight International Elbit Systems lands helmet-mounted display deal with South Korea By Arie Egozi
Elbit Systems has received a contract to supply advanced helmet-mounted display systems for the South Korean army's Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) programme.
Under the deal, Elbit will supply prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries with equipment for its ongoing development effort, which is expected to lead to the manufacture of up to 250 tactical transport helicopters. The Israeli company's initial contract covers those development aircraft due to be delivered in 2009-10, but it believes the agreement could lead to follow-on orders to equip the entire KUH fleet and additional military rotorcraft.
"We believe this selection will lead to further head-up display projects in South Korea and worldwide," says Yoram Shmuely, co-general manager of Elbit's Aerospace Division.
Elbit says its helmet-mounted display systems enable helicopter pilots to fly with their "head out of the cockpit", boosting situational awareness and safety by projecting essential flight data, plus navigation waypoints and threat data into their line of sight.

Korea to Secure Indigenous Weapons Technology by 2024 - Citation :
- The Ministry of National Defense plans to bring up the country’s weapons technology to the world class by 2014 while working to develop the country’s indigenous technologies by 2024. Simulation-based acquisition system will also be introduced.
At the 34th Defense Project Execution Committee meeting chaired by Defense Minister Lee Sang Hee, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) reviewed and approved the plans in a Defense Technology Development Plan that outlines the country’s goals between 2011 and 2025.
The Defense Technology Development Plan is a set of bold plans that include a roadmap for the development of new weapons technologies based on the country’s future needs in future warfare.
The plan consists of eight main objectives under a vision to secure ‘world class defense technology capabilities’ that include the establishment of a defense research and development system to develop indigenous weapons technology by 2024, improving the efficiency of investment on defense research and development and reinforcing research and development infrastructure.
It especially aims to diversify research and development systems by introducing Simulation Based Acquisition (SBA) and Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) systems to help establish a consolidated management system.
The SBA is a system where a new weapon or equipment will be tested under simulated environments from the very development stage to the actual deployment stage to verify the need for the new weapons and to help reduce the time and resources required to develop them.
The ACTD is a system designed to help quickly introduce existing technologies of the civilian sector to the military, and has been put to use by the United States since 1994 and our military has also been applying the system since 2007 in its development of new portable tactical computer workstations.
The Defense Technology Promotion Plan also outlines plans for the development and improvement of eight major weapons systems, including command and communications systems, while also calling for improving the competitiveness of the defense research and development sector by securing new infrastructure and strengthening cooperation between the civilian and military sectors.
Meanwhile, the Defense Project Execution Committee decided to replace the presidential plane with a new plane to be purchased from a foreign manufacturer as the existing one introduced in 1985 is limited to flying only short distances.
“Under the decision, the DAPA will review all the aircraft that can be used as a command aircraft and submit its purchase plan to the Defense Project Execution Committee by August,” a DAPA official said, noting the country will be able to announce its contract for bids in January once it secures the necessary funds in next year’s budget.

- Top US, ROK soldiers in Korea fly with Kunsan airmen
April 12, 2009 (by SrA Angela Ruiz) - The commander of United States Forces Korea experienced firsthand the Wolf Pack's mission on April 10, 2009.
Accompanied by his counterpart, Republic of Korea Army Gen. Lee, Sung Chool, Combined Forces Command deputy commander, Army Gen. Walter Sharp visited Kunsan Air Base to get an up-close look at what the 8th Fighter Wing brings to the fight.
"Air Power is very important to all of our war plans," said General Sharp, "I wanted to see the coordination that has to take place between the Republic of Korea and the US pilots and the Republic of Korea, and US tactical air controllers that are on the ground directing them into a close air support mission today."
The 8th Fighter Wing and Republic of Korea Air Force's 38th Fighter Group hosted the two leaders for the day. Both flew F-16 familiarization flights, however General Sharp flew with a ROKAF pilot in a F-16K while General Lee flew with the 80th Fighter Squadron "Juvats" assigned to 8th Fighter Wing.
"This is a great base be able to increase our capability because we're able to have both ROK and US pilots fly together, train together and live very close together," said General Sharp "What I saw up there today going through a [Close Air Support] mission with two US pilots and two ROKAF Pilots really clearly demonstrated to me the strength of this alliance and the strength of Air Power here in the Republic of Korea."
The day's flight took General Sharp and General Lee on a simulated CAS mission in an urban environment. They observed the precision with which the F-16 pilots are able to strike targets and also how the Airmen integrate with both US and ROK tactical air controllers on the ground.
"We were very successful today in picking out, in a very crowded environment, many different building and vehicles," General Sharp said. "The JTACS [Joint Terminal Air Controllers] were able to talk us in onto the target, to deliver the bombs on the target, get good battle damage assessment and then roll back in on a couple of the targets.
"[The mission] showed the combined nature of this fight, and really the combined abilities we have here with both ROK and US F-16 pilots," he said.
According to General Sharp the bi-lateral training opportunities that exist in Korea are critical to both nations' militaries, in the air, on the ground and at sea.
"We fight as one team here and we train as one team," he said. "I'm absolutely convinced that this team of Republic of Korea and US military is prepared for anything."
The day's visit was General Sharp's first experience flying with the Wolf Pack Airmen. The career Armor officer left with a greater understanding of how Kunsan's F-16s integrate with the fight on the ground and confidence in the ability and readiness of the men and women who make up both sides of the US, ROK alliance.
"What I learned out of this today is number one, that the Air Force, both ROK and US, are trained and ready to go against anything that's coming," he said.

South Korea to build a semi-stealth fighter?
Seoul, South Korea - To replace its KF-16 fleet (WAPA) - South Korea might build a semi-stealth fighter after 2018 to replace its fleet of KF-16 aircraft, an unnamed military source revealed today through the pages of "Korea Times". The project comes after a close-door meeting held in March and it's dubbed KF-X.
According to the source, the KF-X should be a F-18E/F Super Hornet type fighter with 4.5 generation semi-stealth technology equipped with an AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar domestically built, an engine capable of 32,000 pounds (11,940 kg) of thrust and with fully integrated weaponry and sensor systems.
"A consensus has been reached on the KF-X requirements among the Air Force, the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff- the quoted source explained - The plan will be submitted to the presidential office soon for approval as part of the military's 2010-14 force improvement package".
It is the first time that details on the KF-X project are unveiled. Before it was generally believed that it would be a F-16 class fighter with more stealth capability than Dassault Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon, but less than Lockheed Martin F-35. (Avionews)
