DATE:25/03/09 SOURCE:Flight International Elbit Systems lands helmet-mounted display deal with South Korea By Arie Egozi
Elbit Systems has received a contract to supply advanced helmet-mounted display systems for the South Korean army's Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) programme.
Under the deal, Elbit will supply prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries with equipment for its ongoing development effort, which is expected to lead to the manufacture of up to 250 tactical transport helicopters. The Israeli company's initial contract covers those development aircraft due to be delivered in 2009-10, but it believes the agreement could lead to follow-on orders to equip the entire KUH fleet and additional military rotorcraft.
"We believe this selection will lead to further head-up display projects in South Korea and worldwide," says Yoram Shmuely, co-general manager of Elbit's Aerospace Division.
Elbit says its helmet-mounted display systems enable helicopter pilots to fly with their "head out of the cockpit", boosting situational awareness and safety by projecting essential flight data, plus navigation waypoints and threat data into their line of sight.

Raytheon offers multiple-intelligence aircraft solution to meet RoKAF's ISTAR requirement
In partnership with Korean Air and Bombardier, Raytheon Technologies announced on 22 December that it is formally offering a business jet-based multiple-intelligence (multi-int) surveillance aircraft to meet the Republic of Korea Air Force’s (RoKAF’s) requirement for an intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR)-capable aerial system.
The company said in a statement that its ISTAR-K solution is based on a modified Bombardier Global 6500 business jet, with Korean Air providing its expertise in terms of design, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and upgrades.
The platform’s integrated ISR suite includes a “multimode active electronically scanned-array (AESA) radar, multispectral electro optical/infrared sensors, and signals intelligence suites to help operators make decisions”, noted Raytheon, adding that battle management command control will be integrated throughout the aircraft to enable interoperable communications with South Korean allies and partners.
“The RoK faces an increasingly complex security environment, requiring a multi-int approach and seamless integration with forces to manage threats. The ISTAR-K system will be designed to enable [the] RoKAF to monitor natural disasters, enforce maritime embargos, ensure border security, conduct ISR missions at long distances, and play a critical role in protecting the country from ballistic missile attacks,” said Raytheon, adding that the system has been designed to provide “a common operating picture that will give assurance to RoK commanders in the air and on the ground that they will make the right decisions”.

South Korean Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier!!!!

RoKN unveils revised conceptual design for future light aircraft carrier
The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) unveiled on 3 January a revised conceptual design for its future next-generation light aircraft carrier.
The latest design, which confirms that the vessel will not feature a ski-jump, features a twin-island arrangement. The computer-generated imagery (CGI) also appears to confirm that the service plans to operate Lockheed Martin F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) Joint Strike Fighters from the vessel. Naval helicopters, somewhat similar in appearance to the Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin MH-60R Seahawk, can also be seen on the carrier.
The RoKN pointed out, however, that the latest conceptual design can be further revised during the basic and detailed designed stages.
A second image provided by the service shows the vessel, which is being acquired under the LPX-II Project, operating as part of a carrier group alongside what appear to be KSS-III-class submarines as well as KDX-2-, KDX-3 Batch II-, and KDDX-class destroyers, and a Soyang (AOE-II)-class logistics support ship.
The latest developments come after South Korean officials and defence researchers held their first meeting in late October 2020 to discuss the development of “core technologies” for the carrier. The country’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced at the time that a total of seven institutions and companies, including the Agency for Defense Development, Pusan National University, and LIG Nex1, would take part in the development process, which is expected to be completed by 2024.
As an example of core technologies, DAPA cited the planned development of coating materials to protect the flight deck of the 40,000-tonne carrier.

Hyundai Rotem aims to roll out unmanned K1 MBT testbed by 2024
South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem has been selected as prime contractor to develop technologies that would enable the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA) to convert its existing armour vehicles, such as its main battle tanks (MBTs) and self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) into unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).
The company announced on 31 December that will carry out two separate research and development (R&D) programmes worth about KRW15.2 billion (USD13.98 million) under a contract awarded by the Agency for Defense Development’s (ADD’s) Defense Industry Technology Center.
The first R&D assignment seeks to develop common tele-operation and driving technologies that can be applied across the RoKA in-service combat vehicle fleet. The second effort will build on the experience gained to develop bespoke systems for the K1 MBT. Both requirements are expected to be completed by 2024.
More than 1,000 K1 MBTs were produced between 1984 and the mid-1990s and are being operated by the RoKA and RoK Marine Corps (RoKMC). A comparable number of K9 SPHs were manufactured between 1999 and 2019 and deployed in the RoKA and RoKMC.
Janes earlier reported that key research areas include a common remote-control architecture and remote driving as well as autonomous navigation technology. The agency will also explore specific mission systems that address the unique characteristics of both MBT and SPH operations, such as mobile target remote aiming and tracking technology for the former and autonomous deployment, heat dissipation, and automated shooting preparation systems for the latter.

South Korea developing submarine-launched ballistic missile, says report
South Korea is developing a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) based on its 500 km-range Hyeonmu-2B (also spelled Hyunmoo-2B) ballistic missile, with underwater test launches set to be carried out later this year, according to local media reports.
The Yonhap News Agency quoted an unnamed military source as saying that ejection tests of the missile conducted on land – presumably at the at the Agency for Defense Development’s (ADD’s) Anheung test site in Taean County – were completed in 2020, adding that developers will now “move on to the next stage of conducting underwater test launches”.
The missiles, which are to be fitted with conventional warheads, are expected to be deployed with 3,000 tonne-class or larger submarines, said the source, adding that Seoul has yet to decide exactly when and on which platform to carry out the initial test launches.
Yonhap quoted the Ministry of National Defense (MND) in Seoul as refusing to confirm the statements made by the source, saying only, ”Our military has secured advanced high-power assets, such as missiles, to support peace on the Korean Peninsula and will continue to develop them.”
The latest developments come after South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) displayed a model of the 3,000-tonne KSS III (also spelled KSS-3) submarine class at the International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX) 2019 in Busan, confirming that these indigenously developed attack submarines have been designed with a capability to launch SLBMs.

SEOUL (Yonhap) -- South Korea decided Monday to develop an indigenous attack helicopter for Marine Corps operations, the arms procurement agency said.
The defense project promotion committee, presided over by Defense Minister Suh Wook, approved the project, which is to begin in earnest next year and to be completed in around 2031 with a budget of 1.6 trillion won (US$1.44 billion), according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
The new platform is likely to be based on a MUH-1 Marineon, the Marine variant of the country's KUH-1 Surion helicopter, according to officials.
"We've taken into consideration diverse factors such as the interoperability with the Marineon and the operations and management efficiency," DAPA said in a statement. "The project is expected to enhance our troops' capabilities, particularly in northwestern islands (near the inter-Korean border)."
