- Nakilat to Build Patrol Boats for Qatari Navy
Nakilat will construct and deliver six patrol vessels for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces (QENF) at its shipbuilding facilities at the Port of Ras Laffan, under a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU). QENF will use the patrol boats to support its existing operations in the monitoring and surveillance of Qatar's economic exclusive zone, according to gulftimes.com. Additional missions to be carried out by the new vessels include offshore patrolling, search and seizure operations, as well as anti-piracy and hijacking operations. The MoU also includes dry-docking and repairs of Qatari Navy and other military auxiliary vessels in the event of machinery breakdowns or system failures, major upgrades and conversions of vessels, and procurement services for spare parts and materials. According to QENF Staff Brigadier al-Mohannadi, the agreement will provide maintenance services and programme logistical support to the QENF which will greatly extend the fleet readiness capabilities.

- Qatar Buys Exocet MM40 Bock 3s for its Fast Attack Craft
The Emirate of Qatar sits in the middle of the Persian Gulf, a shallow and narrow body of water that lends itself to fast, small, missile armed ships and boats. Qatar’s Navy relies on 7 French and British 400t-500t Fast Attack Craft, and MBDA’s Exocet missile is their anti-ship weapon of choice. MBDA has just announced that the Qatari navy’s 4 Vosper Thorneycroft Vita Class FACs will now be equipped with the new Exocet MM40 Block 3 missiles, under a recent batch buy. The Block 3 replaces rocket fuel with turbojet propulsion, extending the missile’s range; and adds GPS-like targeting. That kind of geographic targeting is especially useful in cluttered near-shore zones, minimizing the odds of false lock-ons before the missile gets close to its target. The first operational firing of the MM40 Block 3 from a naval warship took place in France on March 18/10 http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/Qatar-Buys-Exocet-MM40-Bock-3s-for-its-Fast-Attack-Craft-06342/ _________________ "La stratégie est comme l'eau qui fuit les hauteurs et qui remplit les creux" SunTzu

- Qatari Emiri Navy Selects Latest Generation Missile from Exocet Family
Published on ASDNews: Apr 23, 2010
(April 22, 2010) -- MBDA is pleased to announce that the Qatari Emiri Navy will procure a batch of Exocet MM40 Block 3 missiles to equip its fleet of four Vita class Patrol Boats.
This latest generation of naval superiority missile has a significantly extended range thanks to its turbojet propulsion. And thanks to its GPS navigation, the new Exocet MM40 Block 3 is able to strike a target designated by its geographical coordinates, while remaining compatible with existing MM40 launchers.
The Commander of the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces (QENF), Staff Brigadier (SEA) Mohammed Bin Nasser Al Mohannadi, said "The missile development project is in line with our development plan to update the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces. It is an integrated project which includes training officers and other navy personnel to deal with modernised missile systems, the development of missile launcher systems and updating with the latest technology in the field".
Antoine Bouvier, CEO of MBDA, stated: "I am honoured that the Qatari Emiri Navy, one of the region's most demanding armed forces, has decided to prolong its partnership with MBDA which already dates back several decades. In choosing Exocet MM40 Block 3, the Qatari Emiri Navy is not only opting for the most modern of anti-ship capabilities it is also maximising its past investment in the Exocet family, as well as benefiting from all the advantages associated with a weapon series that has achieved sales of 3,500 units around the world".
The EXOCET family has an OTH (Over The Horizon) firing capability and a range of other operational benefits including : -- low radar signature -- late seeker activation -- sea-skimming at very low altitude -- enhanced target selection and ECCM (Electronic counter-countermeasures) -- high penetration capability against modern naval air defences
Since entering service in 1972, 3,500 EXOCET missiles, in all configurations, have been sold to 35 countries.
MM40 Block3 has been ordered by the French Navy and will equip its variant of the Franco-Italian FREMM frigate. It has also been ordered by several other export customers. In March 2010, the French navy carried out an operational firing of an Exocet MM40 Block3 from its Horizon class Chevalier Paul frigate.

Qatari Air Force to Buy Fighter Jets
Qatar is planning to procure a major fleet of fighter jets for use by the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF). The proposed aircraft will replace the QEAF's existing fleet of French-made Dassault Mirage 2000-5s. The National quoted Brigadier Gen Mubarak bin Mohammed al Khayarin saying that while the number of jets to be acquired was still under discussion, Qatar is likely to order between 24 and 36 units. QEAF is evaluating fighter jets produced by France, UK, Italy and US companies, including the Lockheed Martin F-35 joint strike fighter, the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-15, the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Dassault Rafale. Qatar's purchase plan follows a formal evaluation of fighter jet capabilities last year, and forms part of the Gulf nations' build up of their homeland defences after Saudi Arabia and the UAE announced planned fighter jet acquisitions.

- The Qatar Armed Forces Order Three EMS-Configured AW139s
AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce that the Qatar Armed Forces have signed a contract for three AW139 medium twin helicopters plus a comprehensive logistics support package. These aircraft will be operated by the Qatar Emiri Air Force to perform emergency medical service missions. This latest contract adds to the one for eighteen AW139s signed by the same customer in 2008. Some of the 18 have already been delivered to carry out a range of operations including utility, troop transport, search and rescue, border patrol, special forces operations, law enforcement and homeland security. The remainder are expected to be progressively delivered by early 2012.
Giacomo Saponaro, Senior Vice President International Government Business Unit, AgustaWestland said “We are delighted to have signed this contract which provides clear evidence of customer’s satisfaction with the best selling multi-role medium twin helicopter. This order further expands the incredible success achieved by the AW139 in Qatar for a variety of applications and makes this market one of the most important for the type in the Middle East with almost 40 units on order so far.”

The AW139 sets new standards of performance in its class with the largest cabin in its category, a maximum cruise speed of 165 knots (306 km/h) and a maximum range in excess of 570 nm (1060 km) with auxiliary fuel. The aircraft has outstanding one engine inoperative capabilities even in the hot and high environmental conditions. The advanced integrated cockpit with state-of-the-art technology minimises pilot workload allowing the crew to concentrate on mission objectives. Over 350 aircraft are now in service performing EMS/SAR, military missions, offshore transport, VIP/corporate transport, law enforcement, utility. Orders for over 500 units have been placed by more than 140 customers in approximately 50 countries so far, with nearly a quarter of sales logged in the Middle East region. defpro |

400th AW139 Delivered to the Qatar Armed Forces
Published June 21, 2011 | By Rob Vogelaar
The Qatar Armed Forces has taken delivery of another AW139 medium twin helicopter. This aircraft is also the 400th AW139 delivered so far world-wide and it will be operated by the Qatar Emiri Air Force for a number of roles including utility, troop transport, search and rescue, border patrol, special forces operations, law enforcement and homeland security. The delivery of the 400th AW139 marks another major milestone for the programme. The AW139 has become the best selling helicopter in its class for an impressive variety of commercial and government roles meeting the most demanding requirements across the globe. Since its certification in 2003, the AW139 has been constantly further enhanced to achieve ever increasing levels of performance, safety, mission effectiveness and capability to meet the very latest challenging requirements of present and future customers. AgustaWestland is continuing its efforts to make the AW139 an even more competitive helicopter for the benefit of operators by introducing a range of upgrades as well as new role equipment. Developments introduced include a Maximum Gross Weight increase to allow higher payload and longer range missions, the unique Full Icing Protection System for real all weather capabilities and a 4-axis AFCS with SAR modes. The offshore market, where more than one third of AW139 sales have been logged so far, will be able to take advantage of many of the product enhancements AgustaWestland is implementing to improve the AW139’s capabilities. The Qatar Armed Forces have ordered a total of twenty one AW139s of which three are dedicated to emergency medical service missions. The remainder of original order for 18 helicopters will be delivered by early 2012, followed by the EMS-configured aircraft. Qatar is one of the most important markets for the AW139 in the Middle East with orders for almost 40 helicopters of this model placed to date for both government and commercial applications. aviationnews | |

- DCI Successfully Completed Major Overhaul On Qatar Gazelle Helicopters
(Source: DCI Group; issued June 27, 2011)
Since the signature of the contract with the Qatar Ministry of Defense two years ago, DCI was in charge of executing major overhaul on 11 Gazelle helicopters.
Generally speaking, a major overhaul operation is carried out every 12 years or after 4,000 flight hours and consists of complex and demanding preventive maintenance that guarantees flight safety.
In the case of Qatar's Gazelles, DCI-COFRAS led the project within the QEAF (Qatar Emiri Air Force) with a team of 14 persons. This team had at its disposal all the required logistic means (infrastructure, tools, documentation, special workshops, etc.) and spare parts to provide this service in optimal conditions. Each major overhaul was carried out in 5 months by a team of 4 mechanics, from all specialties.
By the end of April 2011, the 11 aircraft were acceptance tested with no reservations from the customer. Therefore DCI-COFRAS fulfilled its mission regarding the quality of provided services and compliance with schedules. In this respect the customer expressed its wish to continue collaboration with DCI-COFRAS.
“Our presence alongside the QEAF shows the recognition of DCI-COFRAS know-how and ability to transfer and adapt the concepts of operational maintenance applied in the French armed forces,” points out General de Zuchowicz, Executive Vice-President of DCI-COFRAS.
DCI was created in 1972 to assist in military equipment sales to foreign countries. Its main mission consisted of providing operational training courses based on the know-how of the French Armed Forces.
DCI, service provider in which the French government is the concurring shareholder, now operates throughout the defence and security spectrum. Culturally close to the Ministry of Defense, DCI offers outsourcing services to foreign countries, for: -- consulting and assistance throughout the life cycle of armament programs,
-- training engineering, in the academic, operational and technical fields
Lastly, DCI and its subsidiaries have been partners of the French Armed Forces for 10 years within the scope of service contracts and are endeavouring to extend their activities to European Union countries.
