Fighter jet crashes in army-ruled Myanmar YANGON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - A Chinese-made fighter jet crashed and caught fire during a training flight in army-ruled Myanmar on Friday, killing the pilot, witnesses said. The crash was one of at least 10 fatal accidents involving military aircraft in Myanmar since 1999. The single-seat F-7 supersonic jet crashed at the Mingaladon Airbase in Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city, after the landing gear failed and the pilot was unable to eject, an official at the nearby international airport told Reuters. Little is known about the size of the secretive country's air force, but it is widely believed to have several squadrons of ageing Chinese fighter jets, most following designs based on Russian-made MiGs. A Moscow newspaper reported in December that Myanmar had agreed to buy 20 MiG-29 fighter jets from Russia for $572.2 million. Military officials in both Russia and Myanmar declined to comment on the report. A military source in Yangon said Russia had supplied 12 MiG-29 fighters to Myanmar in 2001.

Burmese Air Force Acquires Combat Helicopters The Burmese Air Force (BAF) has acquired 50 Mi-24 helicopters and 12 Mi-2 armoured transport helicopters from Russia to fight insurgency in the country. The Mi-24 fighter helicopters and the Mi-2s will be assembled at the flying training base in Meikthila before deploying in four squadrons at Magwe and Ela Air Bases. The Mi-24 helicopters will help the air force conduct air strikes against infantry battalions in Burma's ethnic areas. The Mi-24 acquisition follows a request from BAF chief Lt-Gen Myat Hein to Russia to modernise Burma's aging air force, according to the Irrawaddy.

S 125 Neva/ Pechora surface-to-air missile Burma’s Air Defense Force intends to deploy the S 125 Neva/ Pechora surface-to-air missile after Burmese army soldiers spotted an unidentified flying object assumed to be an Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) flying over eastern Shan State in early January. Originally from Russia, the S-125 Neva/Pechora is a kind of surface-to-air-missile (SAM) that has a shorter effective range and lower engagement than others. “Air Defense Force troops will be in training between this month and April at Burma’s Air Defense Force schools,” said Khuensai Jaiyen, the editor Thailand-based Shan Herald Agency for News (SHAN). “The training involves the UAV that was spotted in January.” The UAV flew across Namhsan Township and was identical to a UAV spotted by government troops in the last week of December over Kengtung Township. The Burmese Air Force has reportedly been ordered to shoot the UAV down if spotted again in Burmese airspace. Normally, Burmese Air Defense Force battalions are equipped with 57 mm and 40 mm anti-aircraft auto-cannons, 37 mm anti-aircraft guns and Russia-made IGLAs, a portable anti-aircraft missile. Burma's military has sent junior Air Defense Force officers to Russia to be trained in portable air defense missile systems. During the NATO air strikes in Yugoslavia, an F-117 stealth aircraft was shot down by a Serb S-125 air defense system in 1999. As of December 2008, over 200 Pechora-2M upgraded ramp-launched missiles had been ordered by Egypt, Syria, Libya, Burma, Vietnam, Venezuela and Turkmenistan, according to the website www.deagel.com. Burma's military has two Air Defense Force schools, one based in Meikhtila in Mandalay Division and the other in Hmawbi in Rangoon Division, and eight Air Defense Force commands.

Russia Closing Deal With Burma Over 20 Fighter Jets
Russia is believed to be close to finalising a deal over the sale of 20 advanced fighter jets to the Burmese military, which has sought to expand its air power in tandem with ground forces.
The MiG-29 planes have been purchased directly from the Russian state exporter, Rosoboronexport, in a deal estimated at more than $US570 million.
The additional planes, due to shipped before the end of next year, will double Burma’s fighter jet fleet, and becomes one of the biggest sales of its kind by Moscow.
Burma
Although Burma already has used MiG-29 in its arsenal, bought years ago from Russia and Belarus, the adapted versions are more suited to the country’s rough terrain and are noted for their aerial maneuverability.
At the time the deal was first struck in late 2009, a source close to Rosoboronexport said that the Russian offer had beaten one by China for “ultra-modern” J-10 and FC-1 fighters to be shipped to Burma “on very advantageous conditions”.
This week Russia delivered 11 MiGs to India as part of a 16-plane package to equip an aircraft carrier due to be delivered next year. The two countries then signed a deal in March 2010 for the sale of an additional 29 jets, priced at around $US1.5 billion.
Although a longtime supplier of India’s military, Russia has made no secret of its wish to expand its security presence into South and Southeast Asia and draw closer to strategically placed countries like Burma and India.
Reports emerged last month that Russia had also been awarded a tender to develop Burma’s first metro in its remote capital, Naypyidaw.
Military relations between the two countries have a solid history, with Russia a chief supplier of hardware to the Burmese army and promising young military personnel from Burma regularly sent for training in elite Moscow academies.
The Burmese government is also known to be wary of an overdependence on China as its chief foreign ally and security partner, and has been courting other powerhouses like Russia and India as possible alternatives.
Naypyidaw is also embarking on an aggressive expansion of its military that includes the purchase of fighter jets, as well as orders to battalion commanders to recruit extra manpower. This is despite Burma having no external enemy.
Whether aerial power is necessary in its perennial conflicts against ethnic armies is debated, although the MiG-29 would suit the poor ground-level infrastructure in the country’s remote border regions.
Reports from Shan state last month suggested that air strikes had been targeted at the opposition Shan State Army, although this has not been independently confirmed.

RSK MiG is beginning to wind down production of its "classic" MiG-29 design, as it completes a final batch of the aircraft for Myanmar.
The company's plants in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and Lukhovitsy will shift to producing the newer MiG-29K/KUB/M1/M2/35 unified platform.
The manufacturer showed 24 classic airframes in the final assembly shop at its Moscow factory during a 3 August visit.
The majority were incomplete examples for Myanmar, while two were Indian air force fighters undergoing modernisation to the MiG-29upg configuration.
RSK MiG says three aircraft have been delivered to Myanmar, with three more being shipped to the customer and the last due to arrive in 2012.
The nation ordered "about 20 classics, chiefly MiG-29SE single-seaters and a few MiG-29UBs," said Vladimir Barkovsky, chief of the company's engineering centre.
The company's production process has been modernised to meet this delivery schedule, with several innovations having cut the lead time to one year.
"We will continue to innovate in our manufacturing methods to increase the [annual] output [of the Moscow plant] from 12 to 24", said general designer - general director Sergey Korotkov.
The company's current backlog for the type is five years, he added, noting that some customers "do not want to wait that long for their new airplanes".
RSK MiG is also performing upgrades for four countries including India and Peru, with the former project covering roughly 60 interceptors.
Six of these will be modified in Russia, with the remainder to be completed in India.
Two single-seat and one twin-seat aircraft are already undergoing flight tests at the Zkukovsky aerodrome near Moscow.
The upgraded MiG-29upg features a new radar, believed to be the Phazotron Zhuk-ME, plus replacement cockpit displays, a larger ventral fuel tank and the ability to use modern air-launched weapons.
Korotkov said 11 MiG-29K/KUB shipborne fighters have been delivered to the Indian navy, with the remaining aircraft from a 16-aircraft launch order to be handed over by the end of this year.
A follow-on contract for 29 more aircraft was signed earlier this year, with these to be delivered from 2012.
Korotkov said India is "completely satisfied" with the performance of its MiG-29K/KUBs, after racking up more than 1,000 flight hours during operational trials over a one-year period.
The Russian navy has also shown interest in the K/KUB model, he said, with an initial order for 12-14 aircraft potentially being signed during this month's MAKS air show in Moscow.

Myanmar acquiring 50 K-8s & 20 Mig-29s. Myanmar is continuing to expand its Air Force with the recent purchase of 50 Hongdu K-8 Karakorum jet trainers from China. Sources in the Air Force revealed details of the previously unknow deal on June 17, 2010, saying that deliveries of the aircraft in knocked-down kit form by sea from China have already commenced. The K-8s are being re-assembled at the Air Force Aircraft Production & Maintenance at Shante AB in Meikhtila. They will join 12 K-8s previously delivered to Myanmar in 1998/99 & now stationed at Taungoo AB in the Pegu Division. The acquisition followed a visit to China by Myanmar Air Force Commander, Lt-General Myat Hein, last November to negociate the upgrade of the Chinese-built aircraft already in service. Air Force officials have also confirmed the order for 20 Mig-29SMTs. These too will arrive by cargo aircraft & ship in knocked-down form, in July & September of this year. They will then be re-assembled at Meikhtila. AFM Aout 2010.

Two Chinese Frigates for Myanmar
The Chinese Navy (PLAN) has transferred two of their older Type 053H1 frigates (NATO name Jianghu-2) to the Myanmar Navy. Based on an earlier Soviet Riga Class (Project 50) design of frigate the Type 053 covers a family of sub-classes with variants that were built starting in the mid 1970's until 2004. The 053H1 class was built at the Hudong Shipyard, China from 1981 to 1988.

The two frigates of 1,702 t displacement with the Myanmar Navy are now named UMS Mahar Bandoola (F-21) and UMS Mahar Thiha Thura (F-23).
The LOA is 339 ft (103 m) and beam is 35.4 ft (10.8 m) and is powered by a conventional two shaft arrangement with fixed pitch propellers. Engine power is by twin medium speed Chinese Hudong diesels type 12E390VA with rated output of 5,880 kW (7,885 hp) at 480 rpm. It has a vee 12 cylinder configuration with bore and stroke of 390 mm x 470 mm. There is also a V18 cylinder model of this series with an output of 8,820 kW used in later variants.
Two type 053H1 frigates of this class were supplied to the Egyptian Navy, the Najim Al-Zafir (951) and the El Nasser (956) in 1984-85 with a further ship Osman (F18) sold to Bangladesh in 1989. Four of the later type 053H2 frigates were supplied to the Royal Thailand Navy 1991-92 with a CODAD arrangement of four MTU 20V1183TB84 engines driving two CPP propellers. A further development of the type 053H3 class is the F-22P Sword Class frigate for Pakistan. Four ships are being supplied, three were built in China and the last one is under construction in Karachi, Pakistan. The Sword Class uses a CODAD configuration of four Pielstick 16PA6 STC engines each of 5700 kW at 1084 rpm.
