LOCKHEED MARTIN AND TERMA SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING FOR THE MARITIME HELICOPTER OPPORTUNITY IN DENMARK
LONDON, September 8th, 2009 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] and Danish aerospace and defense company Terma A/S today announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore opportunities associated with the potential sale of the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R multimission helicopter to the Danish Government.
The agreement, announced at the Defence Systems & Equipment International exhibition, follows the Danish Government’s June 2009 authorization to procure new ship-based helicopters to support Royal Danish Navy vessels operating in the North Atlantic and internationally. The U.S. Navy’s MH-60R multimission helicopter is a candidate solution for these maritime operations.
“Lockheed Martin and Terma will combine our complementary experience and skills sets should the Danish Government procure the U.S. Navy’s most advanced maritime helicopter,” said Marillyn Hewson, president of Lockheed Martin Systems Integration in Owego, NY. “Together, we can offer the Danish Armed Forces high quality technological and support services required to ensure mission and flight readiness of the MH-60R across the 30-year life of the aircraft.”
“Lockheed Martin and Terma share a long and beneficial history of working together in a close partnership, which includes the F-16, C-130 and F-35 programs," said Terma President and CEO Jens Maaløe. "We are therefore very happy and proud, that today with this MOU we extend this cooperation to also include Lockheed Martin Systems Integration - Owego. We very much look forward to combining both companies’ core capabilities on the Danish Maritime Helicopter program, and to investigating a number of other exciting business opportunities.”
Lockheed Martin Systems Integration – Owego is the rotary wing center of excellence for Lockheed Martin Corporation. The company has more than 35 years of experience as a leading mission systems integrator of maritime helicopters, including the British Royal Navy’s Merlin Mk 1 helicopter fleet, and two generations of U.S. Navy helicopters, the SH-60B and the MH-60R.
The MH-60R airframe is designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, with mission systems integration by Lockheed Martin. To date, the two companies have delivered 36 MH-60R aircraft to the U.S. Navy. In July, 2009, a U.S. Navy squadron of 11 MH-60R aircraft completed its first at-sea deployment during six months in the western Pacific with the USS John C. Stennis carrier strike group.
The U.S. Navy has established four of ten planned MH-60R squadrons, and intends to purchase 300 MH-60R aircraft over the next decade. Production plans include capacity for concurrent international sales.
The MH-60R replaces the U.S. Navy’s current fleet of SH-60B and SH-60F helicopters as part of the U.S. Navy’s strategy to reduce different type, model and series maritime helicopters with multi-mission platforms. The MH-60R can perform a wide range of missions from its primary missions of anti-submarine and surface warfare to secondary missions such as search and rescue, vertical replenishment, naval surface fire support, medical evacuation and communications and data relay.

APAR multifunction radar passes F.A.T. with flying colours
The first APAR Multi Function Radar for the Royal Danish Navy was subjected to the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) at the Thales premises in Hengelo, the Netherlands. The test, witnessed by DALO (Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization) representatives was a resounding success: also after its technology refresh, APAR has proven to comply with all customer requirements.
The APAR Multi Function Radar is being installed, in accordance with the schedule agreed upon, on the Peter Willemoes, the second of the Iver Huitfeldt class frigates that are currently being built for the Royal Danish Navy. The first ship, the Iver Huitfeldt, is already sailing, but without APAR. The FAT for the second APAR system is scheduled to take place in August of this year and the third early 2012. The APAR on board of the Iver Huitfeldt class frigates is a part of Thales’s well-proven Anti Air Warfare suite (AAW) that consists of the APAR Multi-Function Radar, the SMART-L Volume Search Radar and the Fire Control Cluster. Similar AAW suites have been installed on the four “De Zeven Provinciën” class vessels of the Royal Netherlands Navy and the three “Sachsen” class vessels of the German Navy and have repeatedly demonstrated their effectiveness, also during multi-target attack scenarios. However, the FAT was not a simple repetition of the Dutch and German FATs. The development of APAR has continued and state-of-the-art technology has been introduced to the antenna and processing units. The DALO delegation that attended the APAR Factory Acceptance Test at the Thales premises, was impressed by APAR’s performance. The entire test cycle was executed without any flaw and DALO is confident that APAR will be a valuable and reliable asset on the Iver Huitfeldt class frigates. Following the success of Thales’ SMART-S Mk2 surveillance radar on the Absalon class ships and the absolutely trouble-free FATs of the three SMART-L Volume Search Radars last year, DALO has come to know Thales as a reliable supplier of high-quality products. The three SMART-L radar FATs were performed in 2010 and these systems have been delivered to the shipyard.

Terma radar systems for the Danish Navys new frigates
The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization has signed a contract with Terma for the delivery of radar systems for the Danish Navys three new frigates of the IVER HUITFELDT class, which are expected to enteroperational service in 2013.
The radar is intended for surveillance and rescue assignments and helicopter guidance. The first system will be installed in May this year, and the two additional systems in December 2011 and February 2012.
Termas SCANTER 6000 naval surveillance radar is already installed on the U.S. Navys Stiletto vessel and will be installed as part of the French Offshore Patrol Vessel program Hermes later this year.
Furthermore, the Spanish Coast Guard, Guardia Civil, has purchased a number of systems for the coastal surveillance along two coastlines in northern Spain.
The radar is particularly suited to detect small targets such as a helicopter under demanding weather conditions at a distance of up to 15 nautical miles and guide the helicopter to a safe landing on board the vessel.
The SCANTER 6000 is specifically developed for surveillance assignments at sea, and consequently it is well-suited for search and rescue assignments and to combat so-called asymmetric threats (terror and pirate attacks).
Previously, Terma has delivered radar systems for a number of the Danish Navy vessels. The radars supplied comprise both the SCANTER 2001 as well as the SCANTER 4100 which has been installed on the ocean patrol vessels in the "KNUD RASMUSSEN" class.
With the three new frigates, the Danish Navy obtains a considerable capacity to solve both national and international assignments. The frigates are 140 meters long and 20 meters wide and consist of seven decks, including helicopter landing deck and hangar. The crew comprises 101 persons. The vessels were built at the Odense Steel Ship Yard.
Terma has already supplied the advanced C-Flex command and control system for the frigates. C-Flex integrates a number of the frigates defense systems, including the advanced AAW (Anti Air Warfare) air defense system and the decoy self-protection system SKWS (Soft Kill Weapon System), also supplied by Terma.
The SCANTER radar systems come in different versions which are tailor-made for specific applications. At present, well over 1500 systems are in operation worldwide for the surveillance of coastlines and ports, naval surveillance and airport ground surveillance at large international airports.
Due to their unique ability to detect small targets at large distances under severe weather conditions, Terma radars are in high demand in the fight against smugglers, illegal immigrants, pirates, terrorists and other illegalactivities.

Denmark to send spy plane to track piracy off Somalia
Denmark will send a surveillance aircraft to help in the fight against piracy off Somalia starting next January, Defence Minister Nick Haekkerup said Friday.
When the monsoon period is over pirates will have better chances and so we have decided to send the aircraft to the area," Haekkerup told reporters following a meeting of the Parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee.
Haekkerup said the aircraft would be joining Denmark's support and command vessel Absalon, which is to be deployed to the seas off Somalia in November for a further six months as part of NATO's Operation Ocean Shield.
Denmark, which is currently chair of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia, has seen many of its ships attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden while several Danes have been taken hostage.
The International Maritime Bureau said last week that piracy has reached record levels with 352 attacks reported worldwide so far this year.

SELEX Elsag awarded a contract to supply the Royal Danish Air Force with 8 LOAM systems
Rome | SELEX Elsag, a Finmeccanica company, has been awarded an important contract to supply the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization with 8 LOAM (Laser Obstacle Avoidance & Monitoring) systems to detect obstacles in the low altitude flights that will equip the Royal Danish Air Force EH-101 helicopter fleet in Tactical Transportation configuration. The job order includes also testing and functional activities - in addition to the ones performed in the first months of this year -, which will be carried out during the delivery phase of LOAM systems.
Activities for the definition of further specifications will be executed in the first months of 2012; this will allow to configure equipment in accordance with all customer’s needs. The delivery is expected to occur in the last quarter of 2012.
These eight systems – six effective and two to spare -, will replace the devices currently used on the helicopters and supplied by SELEX Elsag in 2006. New devices have been updated both in hardware and software components; in particular they have been equipped with next generation microprocessors as well as more effective and high-performing algorithms.
LOAM: SELEX ELSAG INNOVATIVE OBSTACLE DETECTING SYSTEM
LOAM is an auxiliary system for navigation, designed for rotary wing platforms in order to detect dangerous obstacles along the flight path allowing the crew to adopt beforehand contingent and effective countermeasures; it guarantees a higher level of safety in the low altitude flight. LOAM is able to identify different classes of obstacles: cables, wires and all “thin” obstacles, electric or not (telephone wires, electric lines, etc.); poles, high and thin obstacles, for instance trees; wide structures and surfaces, for instance buildings.
The device operating system is based on an eye-safe laser radar, which periodically scans the area surrounding the flight path, detecting possible obstacles; sophisticated processing algorithms permit to extract the obstacle features and to provide the crew with information by means of dedicated interfaces.
SELEX Elsag boasts a deep knowledge of avionic products and customers’ operational needs, gained during more than 40 years of cooperation with the world’s major aircraft manufacturers. Moreover SELEX Elsag creates CNI (Communication, Navigation, Identification) devices and systems, in compliance with the highest market standards.
