LOCKHEED MARTIN AND TERMA SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING FOR THE MARITIME HELICOPTER OPPORTUNITY IN DENMARK
LONDON, September 8th, 2009 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] and Danish aerospace and defense company Terma A/S today announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore opportunities associated with the potential sale of the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R multimission helicopter to the Danish Government.
The agreement, announced at the Defence Systems & Equipment International exhibition, follows the Danish Government’s June 2009 authorization to procure new ship-based helicopters to support Royal Danish Navy vessels operating in the North Atlantic and internationally. The U.S. Navy’s MH-60R multimission helicopter is a candidate solution for these maritime operations.
“Lockheed Martin and Terma will combine our complementary experience and skills sets should the Danish Government procure the U.S. Navy’s most advanced maritime helicopter,” said Marillyn Hewson, president of Lockheed Martin Systems Integration in Owego, NY. “Together, we can offer the Danish Armed Forces high quality technological and support services required to ensure mission and flight readiness of the MH-60R across the 30-year life of the aircraft.”
“Lockheed Martin and Terma share a long and beneficial history of working together in a close partnership, which includes the F-16, C-130 and F-35 programs," said Terma President and CEO Jens Maaløe. "We are therefore very happy and proud, that today with this MOU we extend this cooperation to also include Lockheed Martin Systems Integration - Owego. We very much look forward to combining both companies’ core capabilities on the Danish Maritime Helicopter program, and to investigating a number of other exciting business opportunities.”
Lockheed Martin Systems Integration – Owego is the rotary wing center of excellence for Lockheed Martin Corporation. The company has more than 35 years of experience as a leading mission systems integrator of maritime helicopters, including the British Royal Navy’s Merlin Mk 1 helicopter fleet, and two generations of U.S. Navy helicopters, the SH-60B and the MH-60R.
The MH-60R airframe is designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, with mission systems integration by Lockheed Martin. To date, the two companies have delivered 36 MH-60R aircraft to the U.S. Navy. In July, 2009, a U.S. Navy squadron of 11 MH-60R aircraft completed its first at-sea deployment during six months in the western Pacific with the USS John C. Stennis carrier strike group.
The U.S. Navy has established four of ten planned MH-60R squadrons, and intends to purchase 300 MH-60R aircraft over the next decade. Production plans include capacity for concurrent international sales.
The MH-60R replaces the U.S. Navy’s current fleet of SH-60B and SH-60F helicopters as part of the U.S. Navy’s strategy to reduce different type, model and series maritime helicopters with multi-mission platforms. The MH-60R can perform a wide range of missions from its primary missions of anti-submarine and surface warfare to secondary missions such as search and rescue, vertical replenishment, naval surface fire support, medical evacuation and communications and data relay.

Denmark to send spy plane to track piracy off Somalia
Denmark will send a surveillance aircraft to help in the fight against piracy off Somalia starting next January, Defence Minister Nick Haekkerup said Friday.
When the monsoon period is over pirates will have better chances and so we have decided to send the aircraft to the area," Haekkerup told reporters following a meeting of the Parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee.
Haekkerup said the aircraft would be joining Denmark's support and command vessel Absalon, which is to be deployed to the seas off Somalia in November for a further six months as part of NATO's Operation Ocean Shield.
Denmark, which is currently chair of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia, has seen many of its ships attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden while several Danes have been taken hostage.
The International Maritime Bureau said last week that piracy has reached record levels with 352 attacks reported worldwide so far this year.

12/20/2011 - RAF MILDENHALL, England – An air-to-air refueling mission took a special Christmas turn as one Royal Danish Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon ‘sleigh’ pilot arrived to receive fuel with a Santa Claus hat taped to his helmet. RAF Mildenhall’s 351st Air Refueling Squadron KC-135 Stratotankers are responsible for refueling American and allied aircraft, enabling NATO missions across Europe and Africa. Transient aircraft supporting ongoing operations in Afghanistan and other deployed areas also frequently rendezvous with Mildenhall tankers to receive fuel, which extends their global reach and enables the Air Force mission to fly, fight and win. SELEX Elsag awarded a contract to supply the Royal Danish Air Force with 8 LOAM systems
Rome | SELEX Elsag, a Finmeccanica company, has been awarded an important contract to supply the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization with 8 LOAM (Laser Obstacle Avoidance & Monitoring) systems to detect obstacles in the low altitude flights that will equip the Royal Danish Air Force EH-101 helicopter fleet in Tactical Transportation configuration. The job order includes also testing and functional activities - in addition to the ones performed in the first months of this year -, which will be carried out during the delivery phase of LOAM systems.
Activities for the definition of further specifications will be executed in the first months of 2012; this will allow to configure equipment in accordance with all customer’s needs. The delivery is expected to occur in the last quarter of 2012.
These eight systems – six effective and two to spare -, will replace the devices currently used on the helicopters and supplied by SELEX Elsag in 2006. New devices have been updated both in hardware and software components; in particular they have been equipped with next generation microprocessors as well as more effective and high-performing algorithms.
LOAM: SELEX ELSAG INNOVATIVE OBSTACLE DETECTING SYSTEM
LOAM is an auxiliary system for navigation, designed for rotary wing platforms in order to detect dangerous obstacles along the flight path allowing the crew to adopt beforehand contingent and effective countermeasures; it guarantees a higher level of safety in the low altitude flight. LOAM is able to identify different classes of obstacles: cables, wires and all “thin” obstacles, electric or not (telephone wires, electric lines, etc.); poles, high and thin obstacles, for instance trees; wide structures and surfaces, for instance buildings.
The device operating system is based on an eye-safe laser radar, which periodically scans the area surrounding the flight path, detecting possible obstacles; sophisticated processing algorithms permit to extract the obstacle features and to provide the crew with information by means of dedicated interfaces.
SELEX Elsag boasts a deep knowledge of avionic products and customers’ operational needs, gained during more than 40 years of cooperation with the world’s major aircraft manufacturers. Moreover SELEX Elsag creates CNI (Communication, Navigation, Identification) devices and systems, in compliance with the highest market standards.

TenCate Advanced Armour delivers protective armour for Danish frigates
Vissenbjerg, Denmark | TenCate Advanced Armour has completed the delivery of ballistic protection systems for the second of three Danish Iver Huitfeldt frigates. Due to the modular approach by TenCate to the production of armour solutions, this was achieved before schedule and below budget. There was close collaboration with the Danish Defence Acquisition & Logistic Organisation.
TenCate Advanced Armour has a modular approach to armour production and strives for flexible design solutions. This is possible thanks to the TenCate Ceratego and TenCate Liba ceramic armour systems, both of which provide excellent protection against a wide range of threats in a lightweight, modular package. Michal G. Falkenberg-Knudsen, plant manager at TenCate Advanced Armour in Denmark, explains: ’For the customers, the flexible and modular solution means that they are free to improve and optimise design without risking delays or increasing costs’.

Sikorsky Aerospace Services and Danish Aerotech Sign MOA for MH-60R Support
SHELTON, Connecticut | Sikorsky Aerospace Services announced Jan. 24 the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Danish Aerotech A/S to discuss the possibility of establishing a maritime helicopter logistic support capability in Denmark should the Danish Government acquire MH-60R Seahawk helicopters for the Royal Danish Navy. Sikorsky Aerospace Services is the aftermarket division of Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.
“The combined experience of our two companies can bring the Danish Navy high quality logistics support services to ensure mission and flight readiness for the 30-year life of the MH-60R helicopter fleet,” said Sikorsky Aerospace Services Vice President Frank DiPasquale.
Potential collaboration by the two companies comes as the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) continues to evaluate the MH-60R helicopter for the Danish Navy’s Maritime Helicopter Replacement Program. DALO is expected to announce its final selection in 2012.
“We see this agreement as a steppingstone in building up a support capability in Karup that will benefit our company by creating new jobs for decades. Collaborating with Sikorsky will offer valuable OEM expertise that will enhance the development and expansion our business,” said Jan Jorgensen, CEO of Danish Aerotech.
Aircraft manufacturer Sikorsky has delivered more than 100 MH-60R multi-role helicopters to the U.S. Navy since 2006. The aircrafts’ advanced sensors and communications equipment provide large area surveillance protecting U.S. Navy ships. The U.S. Navy also employs the aircraft for anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, tactical transport, medical evacuation, and ship-to-ship cargo resupply. The Royal Danish Navy is expected to employ MHRP aircraft to strengthen its national operations and carry out international commitments for transport, surveillance, and search and rescue operations with the United States and other allies.
