M113 into the next Millennium
More than 80,000 M113 Family of Vehicle (FOV) systems have been produced over the past 34 years. As of this writing, new M113 FOV systems are being built while existing chassis are being upgraded to modern configurations.

Since their initial introduction in 1960, M113-based systems have entered service in more than 50 countries. The systems have been modified into more than 40 identified specific variants, with many times that number of minor field modifications. Many of these modifications have been developed by foreign governments to meet their specific national requirements. While some older M113 derivatives are being retired and removed from selected inventories, other FOV members are being upgraded, reconfigured, and introduced as entirely new systems.
The original M113 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) helped to revolutionize mobile military operations. The vehicles were able to carry 11 soldiers plus a driver and track commander under armor protection across hostile battlefield environments. More importantly, the new vehicles were air transportable, air-droppable, and swimmable, allowing planners to incorporate APCs in a much wider range of combat situations, including many "rapid deployment" scenarios. The M113s were so successful that they were quickly identified as the foundation for a family of vehicles. Early derivatives included both command post (M577) and mortar carrier (M106) configurations.
The first major upgrade came in 1964 with the introduction of the M113A1 package which replaced the original gasoline engine with a 212 horsepower diesel package. The new power train was soon incorporated into the existing vehicle family as the M113A1, M577A1, and M106A1, as well as several new derivative systems. Some of these new derivatives were based on the armored M113 chassis (the M125A1 mortar carrier and M741 "Vulcan" air defense vehicle) while others were based on an unarmored version of the chassis (including the M548 cargo carrier, M667 "Lance" missile carrier, and M730 "Chaparral" missile carrier).
Continuing modernization efforts led to the introduction of the A2 package of suspension and cooling enhancements in 1979. As with previous enhancements, these upgrades resulted in further proliferation of the FOV.
Today's M113 fleet includes a mix of these A2 variants together with other derivatives equipped with the most recent A3 RISE (Reliability Improvements for Selected Equipment) package. The standard RISE package includes an upgraded propulsion system (turbocharged engine and new transmission), greatly improved driver controls (new power brakes and conventional steering controls), external fuel tanks, and 200 AMP alternator with 4 batteries. Additional A3 improvements, include incorporation of spall liners and provisions for mounting external armor.
The future M113A3 fleet will include a number of vehicles that will have high speed digital networks and data transfer systems. The M113A3 digitization program supports the Army's Modernization Plan by applying applique hardware, software, and installation kits and hosting them in the M113A3 FOV. Current plans call for these systems to be integrated into the M113A3 FOV by the year 2006.

Engine Upgrades
A major component of the RISE powertrain incorporated into the original M113A3 and M730A2 vehicles is the turbocharged 275 hp 6V53T engine from Detroit Diesel Corporation. Replacing the earlier 212 hp M113A2 engine with the turbocharged 275 hp model paved the way for improvements in performance as well as survivability enhancements such as the incorporation of spall liners and the possible addition of add-on armor. The improved performance and higher chassis load capacity has also opened the way for planners to consider additional M113 FOV derivatives.
Moreover, industry and government initiatives have revealed that the RISE engine rating can be increased to 300 hp through the conversion of injectors. Further testing is currently being conducted on a possible engine upgrade to 350 hp (6V53TA-350 hp) while still retaining the X-200-4A transmission. This additional upgrade requires the installation of glow plug heads (eliminating the need for the current air box heater) as well as changes to the air system and a few other components. The glow plug cold starting system also provides for improved engine starting down to -25°F unaided while utilizing 85 percent less battery power during cold starts (the cold starting system is adaptable to the M113A1, M113A2, and M113A3 engines). The glow plug system is now being installed in the 275 hp RISE engine. Initial testing indicates that the 350 hp engine retains the same external envelope size with a gain of only 45 pounds in weight. The higher horsepower makes a heavier vehicle possible; allowing heavier mission payloads and/or greater armor protection.

Transmission Upgrades
The new engine packages have also been accompanied by improvements in the RISE transmission component. The RISE program was introduced with the X200-4 transmission from Allison Transmission. The X-200-4 transmission replaces the three component A2 vehicle drive train (transfer gear case, transmission, steering differential). The new transmission, designed to provide longer life than the previous configuration, has proven durability that is five times greater than the TX-100-1 transmission that it replaced.
The Model X200-4 Transmission went into production in 1986 for both the M113A3 and M730A2 RISE powered vehicles. It was designed for use in vehicles up to 32,000 pounds, a top speed of 41 mph, a maximum engine speed of 2800 RPM, and a power rating up to 275 hp.
Development of the Model X200-4A Transmission was prompted by the heavier derivative vehicles that will utilize the 300 hp and 350 hp engines noted above. The "4A" model features durability and performance improvements in 6 separate areas. It is capable of operating in vehicles up to 40,000 pounds with a top speed of 41 mph. Most importantly, the new model allows for vehicle power growth up to 350 hp. Because of its application from 275- 350 hp, the X200-4A has been phased into production and is the only transmission currently being produced for the M113A3 RISE variants.

M113A3
The M113A3 is a product improved version of the M113A2 with improved transmission and engine. The U.S. Army first identified the need to up-power the M113A2 carrier in the mid-1970s. This need was driven by increases in vehicle weight and a requirement to increase the mobility and survivability of the system. As a result, the "RISE" powertrain was developed and tested at Yuma and Aberdeen Proving Grounds. However, application of the new powertrain was deferred due to a lack of funds.
In 1984 a decision was made to incorporate the RISE package, improved driver controls, spall liners, external fuel tanks and provisions for installation of an external armor kit on an M113 chassis. Additionally, a bolt-on armor kit providing 14.5 mm ballistic protection was developed and tested. Except for the mounting provisions the external armor applique was not incorporated for production.
The new X200-4/4A hydrostatic steer transmission permits use of a more powerful engine, the 275 HP turbocharged Detroit Diesel 6V53T, and eliminates the transfer case and controlled differential. The RISE powerpack increases fuel economy, acceleration, hill climbing speed and braking capabilities and allows the vehicle to maintain speed through corners by accelerating the outer track rather than braking the inner track as on the A2. The increase in horsepower also allows installation of an external armor kit (which increases the gross vehicle weight to 31,000 pounds) and provides mobility comparable to currently fielded vehicles such as the M1 tank and M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicles.
Steering is improved with an automotive-type steering yoke and foot brake arrangement which improves driver control, lessens fatigue and simplifies driver training from that of the A1/A2 steering/braking laterals. Due to load matching ability and increased steering capability, cross country performance is also improved.
Crew survivability is increased by the addition of spall suppression liners and locating the fuel tanks externally, on the rear of the vehicle. The inside of the vehicle (sides, roof and rear) are covered with spall suppression liners which limit troop injuries from the effect of overmatching weapons by restricting the spread of spall when a round penetrates the hull. External fuel tanks free up 16 cubic feet of usable space inside the vehicle and reduce the fire hazard inside the crew compartment. Two tanks and independent valving provide redundancy in the fuel system allowing continued operation when one tank is damaged.

Meet the (PDH)/BAE PL-01 Direct Support Vehicle Concept.
This combat vehicle was unveiled at MSPO 2013 defence exhibition. The new PL-O1 CONCEPT “direct support vehicle” is being developed as a joint project between Polish companies led by Polish Defence Holding (PDH) and an international strategic partner, BAE Systems. The PL-O1 CONCEPT vehicle launched at MSPO is equipped with representative systems which can be flexibly configured to match customer requirements.
PL-O1 CONCEPT is designed to combat enemy vehicles threatening friendly assets, such as armoured personnel carriers, which may not be equipped with the relevant firepower to neutralize such a threat.
A crew of three is located in a “safe capsule” within the hull (the turret is unmanned), and the vehicle makes simultaneous use of both of active and passive protection measures such as :
- An active vehicle protection system.
- Multilayer composite ceramic-aramid armour.
- A mine- and IED-resistant hull structure.
- Additional padding protecting the crew.
- New seats, limiting the blast effects of conventional and improvised explosive devices (IED, EFP).
The PL-01 is to be developed by 2016 with delivery of the first series-manufacture vehicles scheduled for 2018.

- Page 2 Jensen-l08-img

-Missiles antichars ATGM Malyutka

Belgian Company CMI Defence presents a new concept of 120mm fire support vehicle at MSPO 2015

The Belgian Defense Company CMI Defence presents at MSPO 2015, the International Defence Industry Exhibition in Poland, a new generation of combat vehicle based on the Rosomak 8x8 chassis. The vehicle is fitted with the Cockerill XC-8 is a low-weight concept-turret armed with a Cockerill 120mm high pressure gun

Armored Combat vehicules APC/IFV (blindés..) - Page 2 Polish10

The Polish army has showed the interest of a new fire support vehicle based on the Rosomak 8x8 armoured vehicle which is the standard wheeled armoured vehicle uses by the Polish Armed Forces. With this type of vehicle, the Polish army will have an high mobility vehicle with fire power of a main battle tank.

The Cockerill 105mm high pressure gun provides commanders with a wide choice of ammunition to suit the tactical situation; it fires all NATO-standard 105mm types and the Falarick 105 Gun Launched Anti Tank Guided Missile (GLATGM). Elevating to +42° this weapon delivers exceptional engagement capability in complex terrain, an indirect-fire HE capability to 10km range, and the GLATGM permits heavy armour to be enagaged at extended ranges.

The Cockerill 120mm high pressure gun provides a strengthened anti-armour capability. This weapon fires all NATO-standard 120mm smoothbore ammunition and the Falarick 120 GLATGM, which permits the effective engagement and penetration of heavy armour to beyond 5km range.

Both guns are employed using a common high performance, digital, fully-stabilised, day/night weapon control system. Turret weight is kept low through the use of a bustle-mounted autoloader, which permits a two-person crew. The Cockerill XC-8 concept-turret draws on the proven modular technology of the Cockerill CT-CV 105HP turret and may be realised at low risk.

The Cockerill XC-8 concept-turret promises a significant advance in terms of medium-weight direct-fire capability. The combination of highly effective and flexible lethality options with outstanding strategic and tactical mobility, opens up a new range of operational possibilities

MSPO 2015: Selex ES evaluates Polish partner to produce EO systems for the ZSSW-30 turret

Selex ES is currently evaluating a Polish partner to deliver the EO systems for the jointly produced Huta Stalowa Wola/WB Electronics ‘ZSSW-30’ remote weapon turret, the company announced during MSPO 2015, being held from 1-4 September in Kielce, Poland. The turret will equip Poland’s Rosomak APC and the future Polish Borsuk IFV

With the prototype turret containing Selex ES’s systems under qualification, the company has initiated discussions with Polish partners for a long-term industrial collaboration related to the manufacturing and the logistics of the electro-optical systems.

Selex ES was originally contracted by WB Electronics to deliver the commander and gunner sights for the ZSSW-30 qualification phase after an international competition. The company was selected to provide a tailored version of its Lothar and Janus sights specifically suited to Polish requirements. Both are derived from those already deployed by the Italian Army on operations, with the in-service experience having proven the high-precision and high-performance of the systems. Importantly, Selex ES was chosen due to its commitment to transferring technology to Poland and working with a local partner for series production of the system.

By basing production of the add-on electro-optic systems in Poland, Selex ES will be able to combine the benefits of transferring high-performance technology into the country while also assuring the end-user that they will receive an uninterrupted supply of commander and gunner sight systems. The company expects to soon choose an in-country partner to produce the sights while maintaining the performance of the products, also ensuring that there is a local logistic chain in place that can offer the end-user maximum equipment availability at the lowest possible cost. In future, following this programme, Selex ES may look to jointly market Polish-produced Janus and Lothar systems for export.

Selex ES has designed, developed, manufactured, supported and maintained thousands of electro-optic systems over the last 40 years. The company has customers all over the world including Italy and the United Kingdom. Janus and Lothar are operationally proven to provide high performance panoramic sight, day and night, in all-weather. They are production-ready, ensuring that they will be deliverable on-time for the Polish ZSSW-30 turret.

The Scipio project: Rosomak and EVPU introduce jointly made armored vehicle at MSPO 2015

A new Slovak and Polish joint industrial concept is born: Scipio. Unveiled for the first time at IDET 2015 in Czech Republic, the Scipio project features a 8x8 armoured modular vehicle, produced by Rosomak, fitted with EVPU's Turra 30 remote controlled turret. This innovative project is now starring at MSPO 2015 exhibition in Kielce, Poland.

Armored Combat vehicules APC/IFV (blindés..) - Page 2 Exp110

Showcased for the first time in Czech Republic in May, the Scipio project had been launched in order to show the ability of both countries to conduct joint industrial projects, and the least we can say is that the result was impressive. Being showcased at MSPO 2015, what was up to now a project could later respond in part to the need expressed by the Polish army. Poland is currently expanding its fleet of armored vehicles, which could reach 900 vehicles in 2019.

Scipio project unify Rosomak's 8x8 armoured vehicle and EVPU's Turra 30 turret. The Rosomak is a 8×8 multi-role military armoured vehicle produced by the Polish company Rosomak, formerly known as Wojskowe Zaklady Mechaniczne S.A. The vehicle is a licensed variant of Patria's Armored Modular Vehicle.

EVPU's Turra 30 turret consists first of a 30 mm main gun. Both Russian 2A42 30 mm gun or American Mk 44 Bushmaster II 30 mm gun, manufactured by Orbital ATK, can be used as main armament. Secondary armament first consists of PKT 7.62 mm or FN Minimi 7.62 mm machine guns. The Turra 30 can also be fitted with Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM), such as the Konkurs and the Spike. The 9M113 Konkurs is a SACLOS wire-guided anti-tank missile developed by Russia's Tula Machinery Design Bureau (Tula KBP). The Spike is an Israeli fourth generation man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile and anti-personnel missile with a tandem-charged HEAT warhead, developed and designed by the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and in service with a number of nations.

The control system features control modes of turret, ballistic computation, system diagnostic and an operator/gunner post. The optoeletronic box is fitted with cooled IR camera, a laser range finder and a TV camera with zoom. The Turra 30 is protected with STANAG 4569/Level 1 level of protection.

ST Kinetics unveils next-generation Terrex 2 amphibious armoured vehicle

 Maki Catama

SINGAPORE, -- Singapore Technologies (ST) Kinetics, the land systems arm of government-linked defence prime ST Engineering, has taken the wraps off its latest indigenous 8x8 wheeled armoured vehicle development in an exclusive briefing with IHS Jane's .

Designated the Terrex 2, the new vehicle leverages the company's experience with the Terrex infantry carrier vehicle (ICV) - which has found domestic success with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) - as well as the ongoing US Marine Corps Amphibious Combat Vehicle Phase 1 Increment 1 (ACV 1.1) programme that the company is pursuing in partnership with the Virginia-based Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).

ST Kinetics chief marketing officer Winston Toh told IHS Jane's that the Terrex 2 represents the company's intent to increase its international presence, incorporating a larger, newly designed hull that focuses on troop survivability, increased payload capacity, as well as a high level of amphibious swimming capability.

"Our latest design is the culmination of decades of vehicle design that has seen the successful development of protected mobility platforms such as the [tracked] Bionix infantry fighting vehicle and the [wheeled] Terrex infantry carrier vehicle," said Toh. "As a result of this experience, we understand that we are not designing just a single platform, but one that can operate as part of a larger, networked force."

According to technical specifications supplied to IHS Jane's , the Terrex 2 has a 30-tonne gross vehicle weight compared to the current 24-tonne Terrex, offering increased payload capacity for weapons, armour, and expendables. The vehicle accommodates two crewmembers - the driver and commander - as well as 12 fully equipped troops in specially designed blast-attenuating seats that can be detached for quick access to hull storage spaces or to facilitate maintenance.

According to ST Kinetics, crew survivability is further enhanced with a proprietary hull design that it calls "V-over-V" (VoV), comprising two V-shaped hull sections: a lower section that is given over to the drivetrain and suspension systems; and an upper section that contains the protected crew and troop compartments. The lower section is designed absorb the initial blast from a mine or improvised explosive device (IED), with the second V-shaped hull further reducing the likelihood of troop casualties.

ST Kinetics also highlighted that amphibious operations are one of the key design drivers of the Terrex 2 programme, with the vehicle's final hull form determined through extensive testing in simulations, tank testing, as well as actual sea trials. The company asserted that its hydrodynamic hull design, combined with a raised snorkel system and a refined propulsion system, has enabled the vehicle to achieve swimming speeds of up to 6 kt in water conditions as high as Sea State 4 in actual sea trials.

The new vehicle is about 8.5 m in length and 3-4 m wide in its standard and amphibious configuration respectively, and is under 3 m in height with a ground clearance of 400 mm. Powered by an uprated six-cylinder Caterpillar C9 turbocharged diesel engine that generates 600 hp (447 kW) coupled to a reinforced Allison 4500SP six-speed, wide-ratio automatic transmission, the Terrex 2 is capable of accelerating from 0-50 km/h in less than 15 seconds and attaining a maximum speed in excess of 90 km/h.

The Terrex 2 is also equipped with the same suite of driving and situational awareness aids that feature on the current vehicle, including a camera array comprising 11 low-lux daylight and thermal imaging (TI) cameras mounted around its hull that supports closed hatch driving manoeuvres and an omnidirectional surveillance system. However, ST Kinetics has developed a new hybrid imager - called the TI fusion camera - that combines the capabilities of the daylight and thermal imaging camera to present thermal signatures that are visible even on daylight colour feeds.

In terms of armaments, current options include a roof-mounted remote weapon station armed with a 12.7 mm heavy machinegun or a co-axial 7.62 mm machine gun and 40 mm automatic grenade launcher with airbursting capability, as well as a larger remote turret with a 30 mm automatic cannon. IHS Jane's understands that other weapon systems such as anti-tank guided missile launchers as well as crew-served turrets can be mounted depending on customer requirements.

"The Terrex 2 will not replace the current vehicle, which is still in production, but will instead complement it on our vehicle portfolio," Toh said. "So we are now able to offer a wider range of platforms to address specific customer requirements."

Besides the USMC's ACV 1.1 programme IHS Jane's understands that ST Kinetics has teamed up with Elbit Systems of Australia to participate in the Australian Department of Defence's (DoD's) Project Land 400 Phase 2 acquisition programme, which is seeking up to 225 new-built combat reconnaissance vehicles to replace the army's ageing ASLAV light armoured vehicles and M113AS4 armoured personnel carriers from 2020 to 2025. While the company declined to comment directly on its participation in the Australian requirement due to contractual obligations, it is likely that the Elbit Systems-ST Kinetics entry will be based on the Terrex 2 platform.

The new vehicle is expected to make its public debut at the Defence and Security Equipment International exhibition in London from 15-18 September, as well as the Modern Day Marine exposition at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, later in the month.

Armored Combat vehicules APC/IFV (blindés..) - Page 2 2131

The Terrex 2 incorporates the best features of the current Terrex infantry carrier vehicle and the prototype vehicle that was developed to participate in the US Marine Corps' ongoing Amphibious Combat Vehicle programme. The vehicle is seen here undergoing mobility trials at its test facility in Singapore, with its raised snorkel and specially designed radiator system on the forward section of the roof.

Armored Combat vehicules APC/IFV (blindés..) - Page 2 396

The driver's console features increased digitisation, with two touch screen consoles facilitating speedy access to information and settings on the vehicle's health, driving configuration, and other critical functions. Instead of physical gauges located out of the driver's immediate visibility, dashboard information is overlaid on the LCD display immediately underneath the viewports to improve usability and driving safety.

Russia Reveals New Unmanned Fighting Vehicle Based On Upgraded Version of BMP-3

By Dylan Vosman - Oct 2, 2015

Russia reveals new unmanned fighting vehicle based on upgraded version of BMP-3.

The new Unmanned Fighting Vehicle will displayed at the Russian Defense Ministry’s Innovation Day fair in Moscow.

The new Unmanned Fighting Vehicle (UFV) based on upgraded version of BMP-3 is a vehicle that operates while in contact with the ground and without an onboard human presence. UFV can be used for many applications where it may be inconvenient, dangerous, or impossible to have a human operator present. Generally, the vehicle will have a set of sensors to observe the environment, and will either autonomously make decisions about its behavior or pass the information to a human operator at a different location who will control the vehicle through teleoperation.

The Russian UFV have features the Epoch Remote Control Turret with its 2A42 30 mm auto cannon, a 7.62 mm coaxial PKT and a bank of two Kornet-EM anti-tank guided missiles on either side.
