- 178 FW deploys for Exercise Load Diffuser 2010
April 29, 2010 (by SSgt. Tina Maddock) - Approximately 100 members of the 178th Fighter Wing from Springfield, Ohio deployed in support of the Load Diffuser Exercise 2010, April 22 - 27 to Kecskemet, Hungary.
The LD2010 is a joint exercise with the Hungarian Joint Force Command. The exercise aims to sharpen the combat capabilities of the participating forces.
United States Air Force pilots and Hungarian Air Force pilots will have the opportunity to engage in different air-to-air combat scenarios. The aircraft involved are the USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon, Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 Gripen, MiG-29 Fulcrum and the Mi-24 Hind.
"It is one of the few training opportunities they (the Hungarian Air Force) have to fly against a larger formation," said Lt. Col. Nathan Thomas, the LD2010 project officer. "It is to help improve their skills and a way to improve ours," said Colonel Thomas.
The USAF and Hungarian Air Force pilots will be working with the Hungarian joint terminal air controllers to direct aircraft against simulated ground targets, said Colonel Thomas. The Hungarian JTACs were trained in the United States.
Colonel Thomas said the Hungarian Mi-24 helicopters will be working with the USAF and Hungarian Air Force to conduct ground base air defense exercises.
In addition to practicing air combat maneuvers against the F-16, Hungarian Air Force servicemembers will be trained to work with the F-16. Airmen from the 178FW will educate aircraft maintainers and fire fighters from the Hungarian Air Force on operating an F-16.
The Hungarian Air Force welcomed the 178FW with an opening ceremony April 26. The ceremony was attended by both USAF and Hungarian Air Force servicemembers which kicked off the Load Diffuser Exercise 2010.
The exercise is scheduled to last two weeks.

Hungarian Army to upgrade helicopter fleet
The Hungarian army plans to modernise and expand its fleet of helicopters, Defence Minister Csaba Hende told Thursday's Magyar Nemzet daily. Hende said he would travel to Finland in a few weeks to sign an agreement on taking possession of two Finnish defence-force MI-8 helicopters no longer in use. The ministry plans to spend some 10 billion forints on revamping and modernising seven MI-17 helicopters in the next few years. Hungary is also examining the availability of international sources for financing the project, he added. Hende neither confirmed nor denied the paper's information that the army also plans to acquire used American UH-1 light transport helicopters.

| des MRAP pour les Hongrois - Citation :
- Hungarian Defence Forces have taken the delivery of ten new US-made armoured vehicles at Camp Pannonia. The MRAPs will be used by the troops deployed in Afghanistan. The MaxxPro series of Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles incorporate a v-shaped hull design coupled with other survivability factors, being designed with crew protection in mind. The MaxxPro is intended to withstand ballistic arms fire; mine blasts; IEDs; and nuclear, biological and chemical environments. The MaxxPro series features a variety of armouring levels to fit various mission requirements. Different size variants further allow the vehicle to be tailored to the mission. The MaxxPro MRAPs are the most modern armoured vehicles of the Hungarian contingent. The Hungarian soldiers have been trained to drive the MRAPs by the American troops deployed at Khilagay base.
Since the vehicles are armoured and equipped with ballistic protection glass they are aimed at keeping the Hungarian PRT safe. (source: Ministry of Defence 07/01/2011) en A-stan _________________ | |

Hungary begins renegotiating Gripen contract with Sweden
By MTI
The Defence Ministry has started negotiations with the Swedish government’s Defence and Export Security Agency (FXM) about modifying Hungary’s contract on leasing Gripen fighter planes, Nepszabadsag daily said on Friday, quoting a letter by Defence Minister Csaba Hende as saying.
Hende gave a written response to an inquiry made by MP Agnes Vadai, a former defence state secretary of the previous, Socialist government, in connection with her information that the government sought to extend the leasing period beyond the 2016 expiry date and reduce the annual leasing fee.
In his letter Hende confirmed to Vadai her information about the talks, citing as the main reason forced cuts in the defence ministry’s annual budget.
The total value of the lease for 14 Gripen fighter planes is 340 billion forints (EUR 1.09bn) and of the training of pilots another 58 billion (EUR 187m), of which the defence ministry is to pay per year 30 billion and 2 billion, respectively, the paper said.

Sweden approves 10-year extension of Hungary Gripen lease - paper
MTI – Econews
Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 11:30 AM CET
The government of Sweden approved and ratified a ten-year extension of Hungary’s lease of Gripen fighter aircraft last week, daily Nepszabadsag said on Tuesday.
Sofia Karlberg, an official of the Swedish Defence and Security Export Agency (FXM), declined to reveal any further details of the modified contract other than the ten-year extension when asked by the paper.
Hungarian Defence Minister Csaba Hende said earlier that extending the lease until 2026 would save the state HUF 63bn.
The lease was originally set to expire in 2015.
Government data show the Gripen lease costs the budget an annual HUF 30bn. Training programmes for the aircraft cost an additional HUF 2bn a year.

- First Livex day Hungarian Gripens
"Eight planned missions – eight flights, that was great,” reported Lieutenant Colonel Csaba Ugrik, commander of the Hungarian detachment commander, after the first day’s flying during the ‘Livex’ phase. The first day also provided an opportunity for two of Hungary’s new Gripen pilots to gain their first experience of COMAO exercises.
During the first Livex day Hungarian Gripens operated with the Swedes as Blue Force. Photo: Peter Liander.
One of the main focus areas for Hungary in Lion Effort is validating new communications equipment. “Yesterday was the first time that we could really check out the new equipment,” said Ugrik. “The Have Quick radio worked properly, the Swedish link worked properly, and - last but not least - the Link 16 worked well.
“At home we had the opportunity to check it out between the fighters and the ground, and also in the simulator, so the pilots were familiar with the symbology and tactics,” continued Ugrik, “but yesterday was the first time we could really use it in live flying. The reports from the pilots are that ‘we are opening the world’ with Link 16. It is very useful when you are establishing tactics, and you have all of the information on the screen.”
During the first day Hungarian Gripens operated with the Swedes as Blue Force, primarily to test the Link 16 as they are currently the only nations with the equipment. The Swedish AEW aircraft was involved, too, which is also Link 16-capable. With the datalink now proven, Hungarian Gripens are now flying in mixed forces with other nations, as well as taking their turn to play as Red Force defenders.
Lt Col Ugrik also reported that the debriefing system based on the Gripen Mission Support System (MSS) was working well. “This virtual system doesn’t need an ACMI [air combat manoeuvre instrumentation] pod but uses the individual track files to compile a very nice picture of the battle, with timing, aircraft position and so on. There are some small differences [between the nations] but the MSS is basically the same for us all.”
Ugrik reported one of the lessons learned already is the need for more time to prepare the mission via the MSS because of the new equipment such as Link 16. The MSS allows a large amount of information and instructions to be pre-loaded into the aircraft – frequencies, timings, IFF mode changes and the like – handing over this workload to the Gripen itself, rather than burdening the pilot. The identification of lessons like this is one of the main aims of the Lion Effort.
Overall, Lt Col Ugrik is very happy with progress so far. “We lost a couple of sorties in the fam phase,” he said, “but the Swedish guys were really helpful. If you are in this sharing and looping system, then if you need some help you will get it. There’s no problem with support in the Gripen family!”

- Hungary's ForcEi UAV programme bears fruit
By Miroslav Gyürösi 11/14/2012 Hungary's HM EI Zrt and CURRUS Zrt have completed the second phase of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ForcEi project and presented the developments at the Veszprém-Ujmajor training area in early November.
The UAV ForcEi project commenced in 2007, the first phase of which saw HM El Zrt develop the Meteor 3MA jet-powered target drone to meet a Hungarian Armed Forces requirement. The Meteor 3MA, which is designed to be a target for man-portable air-defence systems, has completed testing and is now being introduced into service.
In 2011, CURRUS Zrt joined HM El Zrt to begin the second phase of the project, the goal of which is to develop two small reconnaissance UAV technology demonstrators - BORA and IKRAN - and a vehicle-based transport and control system, designated MRVP (Mozgo Repules Vezetesi Pont, or Mobile Flight Control Station).
The smaller of the two aircraft, the BORA, is a hand-launched system and is powered by an electric motor. The aircraft is largely constructed of composite materials and weighs 10 kg, features a two-bladed propeller, and has a length of 1.6 m and a wingspan of 3.6 m.

- Hungary uses tanks to reach snowbound motorists
15 March 2013 Last updated at 16:45 GMT Tanks have been deployed to reach snowbound motorists in Hungary as cold weather causes transport chaos across eastern Europe.
T-72 battle tanks trundled along icy roads, while thousands of people waited in cars on the M1 motorway from Budapest to Vienna.
Many had been stuck on the road since Thursday evening.
In Bulgaria, a woman was killed when high winds brought down scaffolding in the town of Gabrovo.
Outside Hungary
Heavy snow paralysed parts of south-eastern Poland, where police were redirecting heavy lorries for fear they would get stuck At least 19,000 households were left without power in eastern Slovakia after high winds damaged the grid and lorries backed up on a road Melting snow caused flooding in Kosovo, with reports that a girl of 10 was drowned. A national holiday in Hungary on Friday meant many people were travelling when the extreme weather struck, the BBC's Nick Thorpe reports from Budapest.
A series of accidents on the M1 trapped travellers as the snow built up around them.
On Friday afternoon, the interior ministry sent text messages to all mobile phone subscribers, telling people to stay in their cars as long as their fuel lasted, then move to other vehicles to stay warm.
Meteorological agencies had predicted the cold weather but the sheer number of people trapped in the snow appears to have overwhelmed disaster management services, our correspondent says.
Wind gusts of up to 100km/h (60mph) and snowdrifts up to 1m (3ft) high were reported. The wind is forecast to drop significantly while freezing temperatures will continue.
