178 FW deploys for Exercise Load Diffuser 2010

April 29, 2010 (by SSgt. Tina Maddock) - Approximately 100 members of the 178th Fighter Wing from Springfield, Ohio deployed in support of the Load Diffuser Exercise 2010, April 22 - 27 to Kecskemet, Hungary.

The LD2010 is a joint exercise with the Hungarian Joint Force Command. The exercise aims to sharpen the combat capabilities of the participating forces.

United States Air Force pilots and Hungarian Air Force pilots will have the opportunity to engage in different air-to-air combat scenarios. The aircraft involved are the USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon, Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 Gripen, MiG-29 Fulcrum and the Mi-24 Hind.

"It is one of the few training opportunities they (the Hungarian Air Force) have to fly against a larger formation," said Lt. Col. Nathan Thomas, the LD2010 project officer. "It is to help improve their skills and a way to improve ours," said Colonel Thomas.

The USAF and Hungarian Air Force pilots will be working with the Hungarian joint terminal air controllers to direct aircraft against simulated ground targets, said Colonel Thomas. The Hungarian JTACs were trained in the United States.

Colonel Thomas said the Hungarian Mi-24 helicopters will be working with the USAF and Hungarian Air Force to conduct ground base air defense exercises.

In addition to practicing air combat maneuvers against the F-16, Hungarian Air Force servicemembers will be trained to work with the F-16. Airmen from the 178FW will educate aircraft maintainers and fire fighters from the Hungarian Air Force on operating an F-16.

The Hungarian Air Force welcomed the 178FW with an opening ceremony April 26. The ceremony was attended by both USAF and Hungarian Air Force servicemembers which kicked off the Load Diffuser Exercise 2010.

The exercise is scheduled to last two weeks.

10’000heures de vol pour les Gripen hongrois !  



Les pilotes de chasses hongrois viennent de boucler le passage des 10’000 heures de vol sur l’avion de combat Saab JAS39 C/D Gripen. Pour fêter l’évènement, une manifestation a été organisée avec le ministre hongrois de la Défense M. Casaba Hende.

S'adressant aux invités lors de l'événement, le ministre hongrois de la Défense M. Casaba Hende a déclaré : le choix du Gripen était une bonne décision, l’avion donne d’excellents résultats avec un coût réduit et d’ajouter, que le Gripen est un excellent système pour notre force de défense en matière de  capacités."


Le Gripen C/D en Hongrie :

Depuis 2009 l’armée de l’air hongroise est  déclarée opérationnelles sur le Gripen de types   «Charlie» & «Delta» et assure les missions QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) au-dessus du territoire et dans l’espace aérien hongrois. Les Gripen sont restés en service alternativement avec les chasseurs MiG-29 «Fulcrum» encore en service et ceci jusqu’à la fin de l’année 2009 où ils ont été complètement retiré du service.

Après la Suède et la République tchèque, la Hongrie est le troisième pays européen et le deuxième pays membre de l’OTAN qui utilise des Gripen. Les derniers des 14 chasseurs Gripen acquis dans le cadre d’un accord intergouvernemental entre la Suède et la Hongrie, ont été livrés officiellement à la Hongrie le 28 janvier 2008. L’Armée de l’air hongroise a déjà utilisé ses chasseurs Gripen, tant dans le pays que lors d’exercices internationaux.

La Hongrie a signifié son intention de poursuivre sa collaboration avec Saab concernant la flotte d’avions de combat Gripen. La Hongrie loue des avions de types Gripen C/D, le contrat actuel se terminait pour 2016. Ce renouvellement de confiance, ainsi que l'extension de la coopération se poursuivra une dizaine d'années, jusqu'en 2026.

Hungary takes over Slovenian air policing



Hungary has taken over responsibility for policing Slovenia's airspace, it was announced on 3 January.

Under the arrangement, Hungarian Air Force Saab JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter aircraft will provide air policing coverage of Slovenian airspace.

Since Slovenia's accession to NATO in 2004, Italy has provided air policing of Slovenian airspace with Italian Air Force aircraft based in Italy. The policing of Slovenian airspace is one of three extant NATO air policing missions.

Hungary's Gripen fighters are deployed with the 59th Tactical Fighter Wing's 1st Tactical Fighter Squadron at Kecskemét Air Base in central Hungary. The entirety of Slovenian airspace will fall within the Gripen's combat radius when operating from Kecskemét.

Hungary first announced it would take over the Slovenian air policing mission under a November 2012 agreement. In July 2013 a subsequent agreement confirmed that the Hungarian air policing role would begin in 2014.

Alongside the Slovenian air policing mission, NATO members took responsibility for the air policing of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (under the Baltic air policing mission) when they joined NATO with Slovenia in 2004. NATO launched another air policing mission in 2009 when Albania joined the alliance. Unlike the Slovenian and Albanian missions, which are conducted on an essentially permanent basis (respectively by Italy and now Hungary; and Italy and Greece jointly), the Baltic mission is conducted on four-month rotations.

NATO nations have also deployed aircraft to Iceland under a NATO mandate since 2008, following the end of regular US aircraft deployments to the country in 2006, although in January 2013 the status of this deployment was changed to a training, rather than air policing, footing.

Hungary has bought three additional Mil Mi-8T 'Hip-C' helicopters to fulfil an interim need, the Hungarian Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed on 3 April.

Although not disclosed by the MoD, sources told IHS Jane's that the aircraft are being supplied by Russia through a Hungarian intermediary.

The second-hand and overhauled aircraft cost HUF2 billion (USD9 million), the MoD stated. The helicopters have already been transferred to Hungary's Kecskemet Air Base.

Delays to the country's HUF105 billion helicopter procurement programme have necessitated the move in order to maintain the Hungarian Air Force's fleet of a dozen Mi-8/Mi-17 'Hip' helicopters. A tender for the USD469 million helicopter programme was intended to be launched before Hungary's 6 April general election, but the tender has now been postponed. Although the reasons for this are undisclosed, they are understood to be related to ensuring the tender processes comply with EU regulations.

Towards the end of 2013 Hungary signed a contract with Russia's Rosoboronprom for the maintenance of the country's existing 'Hip' fleet in order to provide a smooth transition until the new procurement programme is completed. The implementation of the contract is understood to have run into issues, with the MoD opting to accept an offer by the Hungarian intermediary for the swift delivery of three additional aircraft to maintain the country's operational inventory.

The three Mi-8Ts, said to be in good condition, will be tasked by the MoD with emergency response and search-and-rescue roles.

Premiers ravitaillements pour les pilotes hongrois !  



Le ravitaillement en vol est une discipline impressionnante au sein du travail des pilotes de chasses. Complexe à l’apprentissage, cet exercice s’avère toujours difficile et demande une très grande maîtrise du pilote en temps normal et peu devenir un véritable calvaire, lors de turbulences et à fortiori en mission de combat.

Une première pour les hongrois :

Cette année, les pilotes hongrois qui volent sur l’avion de combat Saab JAS-39C/D Gripen vont pour la première fois être formés au difficile exercice du ravitaillement air-air (AAR). Les premiers pilotes instructeurs hongrois sont déjà qualifiés et vont maintenant dispenser la formation à l’ensemble des pilotes. Les entraînements se feront en grande partie au-dessus de la Baltique dans la seconde moitié de 2015 et la première moitié de 2016. Les pilotes hongrois participants doivent être préparés pour le ravitaillement en vol, tout en offrant des fonctions de police de l'air.  

Les détails de la formation ne sont pas encore connu, mais il semble qu’un ravitailleur de l’aviation suédoise, un Lockheed-Martin C-130 soit mis à disposition. Lors de la formation des instructeurs un KC-135 de l’OTAN a été utilisé et a permis également une première familiarisation avec ce type d’exercice.

Du Lundi 11 au Mardi 24 Mai 2015, en République Tchèque, a lieu l'exercice "Lion Effort 2015" qui rassemble plusieurs nations équipées de JAS-39 Gripen de l'avionneur suédois Saab, comme la Hongrie, la Suède, la Thaïlande, et la République Tchèque, ainsi que d'autres chasseurs, comme des F-16C et D polonais, des Eurofighter Typhoon allemands, un E-3 Sentry AWACS, et des hélicoptères d'attaque au sol.

Cet exercice, qui a lieu tous les trois ans, a pour objectif d'entraîner les nations participantes à réaliser des missions de défense aérienne, d'attaque au sol, et de reconnaissance. Cette année, il se déroule depuis la base aérienne tchèque de Čáslav, au centre du pays.

C'est dans ce cadre là, à l'occasion d'une mission d'entraînement, qu'un JAS-39D Gripen (biplace) de la Force Aérienne Hongroise a réalisé une sortie de piste lors de son atterrissage sur la base aérienne tchèque, en début d'après-midi hier Mardi 19 Mai.

Le pilote de chasse, en place avant, et son navigateur, en place arrière, se sont éjectés en toute sécurité et n'ont pas été blessés lors de l'éjection. Cependant, comme visible sur la photo ci-dessus, l'appareil a été considérablement abîmé avec l'arrachage du haut de la dérive, d'une partie de l'aile gauche, et de l'ensemble du cockpit, qui s'est littéralement détaché du reste du Gripen.

Le porte-paroles de la base aérienne de Čáslav a déclaré qu'il était encore trop tôt pour tirer des conclusions au sujet de cet accident, et qu'il n'est "pas possible de déterminer si le drame a été causé par une défaillance technique ou une erreur humaine". Cependant, ce dernier a quand même indiqué que selon les premières constatations, une vitesse trop élevée lors de l'atterrissage pourrait être à l'origine de cette sortie de piste, et qu'une enquête a été ouverte.

La Hongrie loue à l'avionneur suédois Saab, et jusqu'en 2026, douze JAS-39C Gripen (monoplace), ainsi qu'un seul JAS-39D (biplace), étant que le second appareil vient d'être détruit.

Technical faults were not behind the crash of a Hungarian Air Force Saab Gripen fighter aircraft on 19 May, Czech Defence Minister Martin Stropnicky said.

"It was reported that there was no technical problem," Stropnicky said as he visited Caslav Air Base in the Czech Republic where the two-seat JAS 39D aircraft suffered serious damage after overrunning the runway on landing. Both pilots ejected and survived. The aircraft was one of five Gripens participating in the Lion Effort 2015 multinational exercise.

The Hungarian Ministry of Defence is investigating the causes of the crash.

Second Hungarian Gripen crashes at domestic air base

Hungarian media claims one of the nation’s Saab Gripens has crashed – the second in less than a month – leading to reports that Budapest has grounded its fleet until further notice.

The single-seater C-model is said to have crashed near Kecskemét air base in Hungary, although the pilot managed to eject from the aircraft and is in hospital in a stable condition, according to local media.

News outlet Hungary Today has revealed that Lt Gen Zoltán Orosz, deputy chief of the defence staff, reports that Maj Sándor Kádár was on a training run on 10 June when he reported that the Gripen’s forward landing gear was not working.

Kádár then attempted a belly landing and ejected when he lost control of the aircraft.

Orosz says the aircraft is likely to be repairable, but the whole fleet will now be inspected, Hungary Today says.

Although the two events are not believed to be linked, the crash follows an incident involving a Gripen D that crashed on 19 May while landing at Čáslav air base in the Czech Republic. The fighter was participating in multinational exercise Lion Effort at the time, and both pilots of the two-seater variant ejected from the aircraft unharmed.

Pictures emerged on Twitter after the event showing the crashed Gripen D off the end of the runway at Čáslav. The mishap marked the first non-Swedish air force Gripen crash, Flightglobal’s MiliCAS database shows.

The leased fleet of Hungarian Gripens consisted of 12 C-models and 2 D-models prior to the incidents.

Hungary has deployed new 3D NATO radar to protect NATO and Hungarian air space.


The three-dimensional NATO radar was deployed in Medina on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 and as a result, Hungarian airspace control will be complete, Defence Minister Csaba Hende announced on Tuesday at the Medina radar station.
The Minister stressed at the ceremony held on the occasion of the deployment of the new radar complex: "thanks to the cutting-edge technology and the top-of-the-range fighter planes, we may now proudly say that we are doing everything that can be done here, in Europe today, at the beginning of the 21st century, with a view to defending our domestic airspace”.

He added: the new radar station contributes to the protection of not only the airspace of Hungary but that of the whole of NATO. The military alliance has such faith in the operation of the radar that it financed 94 per cent of the construction costs from its own budget, and NATO will also provide funding for the operation of the radar during its lifespan, up to 2033, Mr Hende said.

The Minister reiterated that the Horn Government decided on the installation of a new radar station in 1998; however, by 2010 the projects planned for both the Zengo and Tubes locations had fallen through „because they failed to explain to the people why this radar is important ".

The greatest achievement is that the people of Medina in Tolna County decided to side with the cause of defence „out of their own free will, and based on their own best interests”, he remarked.

Csaba Hende further pointed out that more than half a million aircraft traverse Hungary’s airspace annually, and in order to manage this volume of aerial traffic safely, it is essential to have a sophisticated, modern airspace monitoring system in place.

The Medina three-dimensional radar is a fifth-generation, computer signal processing device which operates more effectively and with lower energy consumption, while it is capable of better performance and is easier to maintain than the Russian radars which are now being phased out.

The decision on the construction of the Medina radar station was adopted in March 2011. The foundation stone of the 45-metre-tall radar tower was laid in October 2012, and it was completed with the involvement of the companies HM Elektronikai és Informatikai Zrt. and Megalogistic Zrt. in March 2014 as a project worth HUF 1.1 billion. The delivery and installation of the RAT 31 DL radar equipment began simultaneously. According to Mr Zentai’s information, the several-thousand-hour-long reliability test of the radar which started in January this year has been completed successfully.
