- Spain reveals new delivery schedule for S 80 submarines
David Ing, Madrid - IHS Jane's Navy International
14 October 2016
Key Points •Spain's revised schedule for the delivery of its S 80 submarines will see the lead boat delivered in 2021 •The remaining three boats will all be delivered by 2026
A new delivery schedule for Spain's long-delayed S 80 submarine programme has been drawn up by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), after former admiral of the fleet Francisco Javier Franco Suanzes confirmed that the handover of the lead boat is now due for the end of 2021.
Delivery of the four boats in the class is now scheduled to run until 2026.
The provisional calendar set by state-owned shipbuilder Navantia is scheduled to see lead boat S 81 delivered in 2021, S 82 in the second half of 2023, S 83 at the end of 2024, and S 84 in the second half of 2026, the MoD told IHS Jane's on 14 October.

- Spain considers 'evolution' of Mistral air defence assets
Robin Hughes, London - IHS Jane's Missiles & Rockets
18 November 2016

Key Points •MBDA Spain contracted for 'evolution of Mistral 1 to Mistral 3' study •Spanish Armed Forces currently operate Mistral 1 and Mistral 2 SAM systems
The Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD) is set to evaluate a potential regeneration of its MBDA Mistral air defence assets based on the prospective findings of a study contract awarded earlier this year.
In July 2016 MoD's Directorate for Armament and Materiel Defence commissioned 'A Study for the Evolution of Mistral 1 to Mistral 3' (Program SEN31511) under a EUR550,000 (USD589,479), sole source contract awarded to MBDA Spain. The study contract was formalised on 8 August, but only recently released publicly. Funding will be delivered in two tranches over the 18-month duration of the contract: EUR400,000 in 2016 and EUR150,000 in 2017.
The study is part of a broader initiative aimed at modernising and rationalising Spain's in-service short-range air defence assets. The Spanish MoD has already decommissioned its ageing AMX-30R-based Roland 1 and 2 short-range air defence systems; a Mistral 3 solution could potentially bridge the gap between the Roland system and a required operational performance enhancement for its Mistral 1/Mistral 2 systems - in man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADS) and vehicle-based air defence configurations - currently in-service with the Spanish armed forces.
The study will focus on the compatibility of the Mistral 3 interceptor with existing Mistral assets in the Spanish Army, Marines, and Air Force, and the capability enhancements offered by Mistral 3 over the in-service Mistral 1 and Mistral 2 variants. IHS Jane's understands that demonstration firings of Mistral 3 are not included in the provisions of the study contract, but the interceptor will be demonstrated to the Spanish MoD in a parallel fires demonstration programme, "so that they can assess its capabilities".
The Spanish MoD plans do not call for an upgrade of its existing Mistral 1 and 2 interceptors but specify the acquisition of new missiles.

- Airbus Defence and Space delivers first A400M to Spain

Nov 17, 2016
The Spanish Air Force has taken delivery of its first Airbus A400M new generation airlifter – the most advanced aircraft to have been produced in Spain and one which will transform the nation’s air mobility fleet.
Today’s contractual handover of the first of 27 aircraft that it has ordered makes Spain the sixth nation to put the A400M into service.
Representatives of the Spanish Air Force and Ministry of Defence formally accepted the aircraft, known as MSN44, from Airbus Defence and Space in a brief ceremony at the A400M final assembly line (FAL) in Seville.
Airbus Defence and Space Head of Military Aircraft, Fernando Alonso, said: “Today is truly a special day for all of us who have been involved with the A400M programme over the years – but particularly for the Seville workforce that has worked so hard to make the aircraft a reality.
“Every delivery to every customer is of huge importance to us, but being able to hand over the first aircraft to Spain from our final assembly line in Seville is a source of particular pride. I would like to thank all our employees, as well as OCCAR and our Spanish customer for achieving this milestone.”
In Spanish service the A400M will replace the ageing C-130 aircraft type, carrying about twice the load over the same distance, or the same load twice as far. In addition it can serve as a tactical air-to-air tanker for other transport aircraft, including other A400Ms.
Uniquely it is able both to cruise at jet-like speeds and altitudes over intercontinental ranges due to its four extremely powerful engines and advanced aerodynamic design, as well as to operate repeatedly from short and unprepared airstrips close to the scene of military action or humanitarian crisis.
Under an agreement signed in September, 14 aircraft will be delivered at a steady pace between now and 2022, and the remaining 13 are scheduled for delivery from 2025 onwards.
The Spanish A400M fleet will be based at Zaragoza in North East Spain and will represent the heavylift element of a transport force that includes the medium C295 and CN235, and light C212 aircraft – all produced by Airbus Defence and Space. MSN44 will fly to Zaragoza in the coming days.
Altogether more than 1600 employees from Airbus Defence and Space work in Spain for the A400m program, including 1100 working directly at the Seville FAL and nearby Tablada Factory. To date eight nations have ordered 174 aircraft of which 34 have now been delivered.
