Israeli Navy's missile boat fleet completes weeks of extensive exercises – including first ship-to-ship missile test in over a decade, which was declared as 'complete success'

The Israel Navy missile boat fleet on Wednesday completed extensive training exercises which it has been holding for the last few weeks.

During the exercises the Navy carried out a ship-to-ship missile test. The previous ship-to-ship missile test was held over a decade ago. The missile hit an empty ship which simulated the target. Israel Air Force Combat helicopters and Panther ('Atalef') helicopters accompanied the missile analyzing its flight pattern.

In addition to the missile testing, the exercises included simulation of various scenarios including clashes with enemy fleets, responses to terror threats against the gas fields, shoreline terror attacks, Hezbollah or Hamas attacks against Israeli vessels and merchant vessels anchored in Israel.

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ram Rotberg said "In the exercise, the Third Flotilla (Shayetet 3) practiced complex scenarios and increased its abilities (against) enemy threats. The flotilla troops showed impressive capabilities and proved that they are ready for any task they are faced with."

The naval commander added: "The navy will continue to strengthen and increase cooperation with the (military's) various branches and will continue to act to defend the maritime space and maintain the security of Israel's citizens.

Accuracy, reach of ballistic missile shield to improve, senior Israeli defense official says

Israel is upgrading its Arrow II ballistic missile shield in a US-backed "race" against Iran, Syria and other regional enemies, a senior Israeli defense official said on Sunday.





The new "Block 4" generation of guided interceptor rockets, radars and technologies for synchronizing Arrow with US systems was being installed in deployed Israeli batteries, a process that would take several weeks, the official said.



"The accuracy and the reach will be greater," the official said of Arrow, which has been operational since 2000 and is designed to blow up incoming missiles at altitudes high enough for non-conventional warheads to disintegrate safely.



"It is part of the technological race in the region," added the official, who declined to be named given the sensitivity of the issue.



The Pentagon and US firm Boeing Co are partners in Arrow, an investment that the Obama administration hopes will help stay the Israelis' hand.



US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said last week that Arrow, like a similar Israeli interceptor for short-range guerrilla rockets, Iron Dome, were "designed to prevent wars".



"The policy of the (Israeli) Ministry of Defense is to provide all data to the US, for the security of the US, including on targets, interceptors, radars and command and control," the official said.



With Congress also lavishing cash on Iron Dome, some US lawmakers have called on Israel to share that system, too.



The Israeli official said that though Iron Dome was different to Arrow as it was developed entirely by Israel, the current policy was to provide the Americans data upon request while a more permanent arrangement is negotiated.

In parallel to Arrow II, Israel is developing Arrow III, which is due to be operational in 2014 or 2015. Unlike previous generations of the interceptor, Arrow III will engage incoming missiles in space, using detachable warheads that, turning into "kamikaze" satellites, will seek out and slam into the target.



Israel is also working on a more powerful rocket interceptor than Iron Dome, known as David's Sling or Magic Wand, which is due out next year. Meshed together and with US counterparts, the three Israeli systems would form a multi-tier shield providing several opportunities to intercept incoming missiles.

“They do not want to pay to ship all of the equipment back to the US and prefer to sell it at a lower price which is an opportunity for Israel,” the officer explained.

Last year, the IDF Technology and Logistics Directorate dispatched a representative to the US who is responsible for keeping an eye out for “military sales,” basically deals on surplus equipment or other opportunities like that which was created with the Hummers due to the withdrawal from Iraq.

Once they arrive in Israel, the Hummers will be refurbished and then placed in storage for reserve units.

The IDF plans to build underground supply depots that will be protected in the event of a major missile bombardment on military bases throughout the country.

Led by OC IDF Technology and Logistics Directorate Maj.-Gen. Kobi Barak, the program – which the General Staff has budgeted – will lead to the construction of three integrated, centralized and advanced supply depots in northern, southern and central Israel.

Under the current format, the IDF maintains a fuel depot, a separate food supply center, a base for spare parts and additional bases that supply ammunition.

“These new bases will have all of the supplies under a single roof,” a senior officer from the Technology and Logistics Directorate said. “It will make the process of supplying units more effective and will be done with advanced technology and automated systems.”

Since the bases will become prime targets for Syria, Hezbollah, Iran and Hamas, the IDF is planning to fortify them with significant defenses and to eventually protect them with Iron Dome counter- rocket batteries. Part of the supply depots will be buried underground to prevent it from being damaged in any future missile onslaught.

In addition to supplying units, the Technology and Logistics Directorate is also responsible for opening supply lines to units operating behind enemy lines and ensuring the flow of supplies – fuel, food, ammunition and spare parts – for the duration of what could be an extended conflict.

Last year, The Jerusalem Post revealed that the IDF was dispersing spare parts and ammunition throughout central and southern Israel to protect them against missile fire in a future war, expected to primarily affect the ability to receive supplies in the North.

In addition, the IDF has also dispersed kits in undisclosed locations throughout the Golan Heights and the Galilee so that they will be close to the northern front in the event of a war and at the same time provide protection from potential missile fire, expected to be directed at IDF bases.

The IDF is now also planning to lease civilian warehouses where it can store nonsensitive equipment – such as dry foods and uniforms – and protect them from future missile attacks.

“The enemy knows where IDF bases are located but will not know which civilian warehouses we are storing supplies in,” the officer explained.

Under the Ground Forces Command’s operational doctrine, infantry, armored and artillery units are expected to take with them enough supplies to support operations inside enemy territory for a limited number of days. Afterward, they are expected to open supply lines, which will be used to resupply them throughout a war.
