First Polish Air Force F-35A takes shape
Late April 2024, the first Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II for the Siły Powietrzne RP (Polish Air Force), designated AZ-01, was set with weight on its wheels for the first time at Lockheed Martin’s mile-long assembly plant in Fort Worth (TX): a significant milestone for the fighter aircraft as it moves down the production line to the final assembly line, where its control surfaces will be added, along with final systems and engine installation.
According to Lockheed Martin officials its is expected that the first F-35As for Poland are to leave the production plant in the coming months, a timeline unaffected by the company’s problems with a major upgrade for the aircraft known as Technology Refresh 3, or TR-3.
The envisioned timing aligns with Polish pilot training, set to begin at Ebbing Air National Guard Base at Fort Smith (AR) later this year.
Poland signed a contract for 32 F-35A Lightning II Block 4 fighter aircraft on 31 January 2020. The first batch of eight aircraft will be delivered in 2024-2025 and will be based at Ebbing ANG Base to train 24 pilots and 90 maintainers. The second batch will be delivered to Poland in 2026-2027, with Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the squadron at Lask in 2026. Full Operational Capability (FOC) for this unit is expected by 2030. In September 2021, it weas reveiled that a second Polish Air Force F-35A squadron will likely be based at Swidwin / 21. Baza Lotnictwa Taktycznego (21.BLT, 21st Tactical Air Base).
On 29 April 2024, the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces announced that, following its organisation of an online vote to determine a national name for the F-35A, the vote had concluded. “Dear aviation enthusiasts,” the Polish General Staff announced on Twitter, “we are very happy to announce that our Polish F-35 fighter now has an official name: Husarz.” "Husarz" in Polish means ‘Hussar’, referring to a member of a class of light cavalry that was first formed in the Kingdom of Poland at the beginning of the 16th century.

Poland signs multi-billion deal for new combat vehicles

On July 8, in Warsaw, Poland signed a significant contract for the delivery of several dozen Rosomak wheeled armored personnel carriers integrated with ZSSW-30 remote-controlled turret systems.
The contract, valued at approximately 2.6 billion PLN ($661 million), was signed between the State Treasury – Armament Agency and a consortium comprising Huta Stalowa Wola S.A., Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A., Rosomak S.A., and WB Electronics S.A.
The agreement includes the procurement of 58 Rosomak armored vehicles equipped with SPIKE-LR anti-tank guided missile launchers. Additionally, the contract encompasses a logistics package that includes spare parts.
The deliveries are scheduled to be completed between 2026 and 2027, significantly bolstering Poland’s military hardware.
The ZSSW-30 turret system was developed through a collaborative effort between Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. and WB Electronics S.A., resulting in a prototype and technical documentation. The system is designed for the destruction of armored targets, enemy fortifications, and providing fire support during combat operations. The turret’s electro-optical systems enable operations in various weather conditions and during both day and night.
The main armament of the Rosomak with the ZSSW-30 system is the Bushmaster Mk.44S automatic cannon, capable of automatic and semi-automatic fire using five different types of ammunition, including programmable rounds. The auxiliary armament includes a modified 7.62mm UKM-2000C machine gun and a twin SPIKE-LR anti-tank guided missile launcher. The weaponry can be loaded both externally and internally.
One of the standout features of the ZSSW-30 system is its ability for the commander and the weapon operator to independently observe, detect, identify, and track land and air targets using the autotracker function. The system also allows the crew to operate in “hunter-killer” mode, where the commander identifies and locates a target, which is then relayed to the weapon operator for targeting and destruction.

Massive Number of Volunteers for Polish Army.
11 Jul, 2024 - 13:06 Defense News Army 2024
The Polish Armed Forces have already met their recruitment targets for the entire year of 2024 by early July, with additional volunteers still awaiting their turn. This surge in enlistment creates both opportunities and challenges, as indicated by General Wiesław Kukuła during a press conference at the General Staff.

This information was revealed during a conference addressing the situation on the eastern border and the associated future preparations. A question was raised concerning a document recently disclosed by TV Republika, which allegedly indicated a reduction in planned expenditures for technical modernization.
General Kukuła responded unexpectedly, stating that the Armed Forces have increasing financial resources but are facing additional expenses to maintain the newly acquired modern military equipment. He cited FA-50 fighter jets and M1A1 Abrams tanks as examples. The unexpected number of volunteers has also generated unforeseen costs.
In many countries, recruiting volunteers for the armed forces represents a considerable challenge. The reasons are multiple and often complex. First, demographic trends play a crucial role. In aging societies, the pool of young people eligible to enlist is shrinking, which limits the number of potential recruits. Second, sociocultural perceptions of a military career also influence recruitment. In some nations, military service may be perceived as less prestigious or less attractive compared to other professional careers.
Additionally, the rigorous physical and psychological requirements of the military can deter many young people. Competition with the private sector, which can offer higher salaries and perceived better working conditions, also complicates recruitment efforts.
Unlike many nations, Poland currently seems to benefit from a particular enthusiasm for military service. Several factors can explain this phenomenon.
First, Poland’s geopolitical situation plays a significant role. Located on NATO's eastern border and near tension zones, the national awareness of the need for defense is particularly acute. Perceived threats, especially due to instability in some neighboring regions, encourage citizens to engage more actively in national defense.
Second, the Polish government has implemented policies and incentive programs to attract volunteers. These measures include financial benefits, educational and training programs, as well as a campaign to promote the military career. These initiatives make military service more attractive to young Poles.
Poland has a strong historical and cultural tradition of military service. Patriotism and a sense of national duty are deeply ingrained values in Polish society, which strengthens young people's willingness to join the armed forces.
While many countries struggle to attract volunteers to their armed forces, Poland finds itself in a unique position where the influx of recruits exceeds expectations. This enthusiasm can be explained by geopolitical factors, attractive government policies, and a cultural tradition of military service. However, this influx poses logistical and financial challenges, requiring adjustments in budget planning and military resource management to effectively integrate these new volunteers.
